Network / Sharing :: Ethernet Cable Plugged In / Windows Says Not
Jul 7, 2014
I went to a PC-Shop that fixed it by putting another driver on the PC.But now I have a new PC and after 6 months without any problems Windows suddenly decides there is no ethernet cable plugged in the PC. I've googled for hours and hours trying diffrent things, but nothing seems to work . The cable itself is fine because when I plug it into my laptop it works fine. I've updated my driver, deleted it and try to reinstall, which also failed. I tried out some commands through CMD, which also failed.
It is a custom-build PC with a Asus Z87-A motherboard (in-case that's necessary to know) and the driver that's installed is Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller. OS: Windows 8.1.

The cable works on a different computer, the computer gets wireless fine (typing to you from it) but will not read an ethernet cable. The motherboard manual (built the PC myself from components) says an LED should light-up if an ethernet cable is connected, no such LED appears when I connect the cable.

I had a hard drive crash the other week and I got a new one and went on and upgraded to windows 8.1 64bit. Well I had a hard time getting it to work correctly but now it seems to start up fine with no BSOD.
My problem I'm having now, is that my internet will not work on it, unless I plug in a wireless for it.
My mobo is rather old, (msi k9a2 platinum) and it uses a Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller on it. I first tried to go and upgrade the drivers. It said I had the newest. Though upon reading online I see that they have upgraded the driver for the Realtek to the 8.26.218.2014 driver on 2/18/2014. Well I uninstall my old driver, restart the computer then install the new one from the Realtek website. Then do a restart and still nothing.
It looks like the router is getting pinged or something as it will start flashing in the bottom right with the triangle with the ! in it, about three times then go back to the x in the red circle. In the device Manager the realtek pcie gbe family controller doesn't have the yellow triangle with the ! in it showing that something is wrong. But it's not even reading the ethernet cable is plugged in. I tried detecting the problem and that is all it says is to plug the cable in.
I restarted the computer again and noticed that the number showed up on my router that the computer was connected. When the computer was starting windows with the blue windows logo with the balls circling at the bottom, about half way through the router dropped the number and it doesn't come back up after I unlock the computer.
So I followed the sticky and got the cmd prompt and this is what it is showing...

Since yesterday the internet began to act unsoundly (through WiFi). As in I never had this problem before. There were periods where it was fast enough to play some online games, watch Youtube no problem, and then it would shut off randomly. So since yesterday I have been restarting the modem with only very short term resolutions to the issue.
I accessed the modem through my web browser and it says the connection is always working fine. Despite that, I called my ISP and they claimed there was an issue, and forwarded it to Deutsche Telekom. Since then I did some experimenting and plugged my computer into the modem with the ethernet cable.
Boom. No problem whatsoever. It's been top speed and reliable.
I downloaded and installed updates for Windows today. There are 18 optional ones that I did not download yet, but I did download and install the important ones no problem. I checked the network adapters and they all state "The best driver for your software is already installed."

I have been having issues with sharing my internet connection via an ethernet cable. I read online that there is the ability to 'share' your internet connection. I have learned how to do this, but it doesnt work for me. I tried connecting my laptop. I went through everything and I was able to get the connection (it showed the LAN connectivity icon) however, there was the little yellow triangle next to it. I waited but it won't connect. What I am trying to do with this is be able to play multiplayer on computer games with other computers on my LAN. I also tried to connect my XBox 360 with this, but it doesnt have an internet connection.
Things to keep in mind The only way I could get a good internet service was through my cell phone service provider, so I get my internet connection through my phone via USB tethering
All of the computers I am trying this on have Windows 8 Pro, except for one

I'm having problems with my Asus NV56VM laptop (windows 8). Whenever I try to use an ethernet cable to access internet I either get a SSL-error, the website doesn't load at all or it loads VERY slowly and not the whole website (it says that I have internet acces and that it's not limited). Wireless works fine though.
I've also tested playing some games (ex Call of duty) and it works fine for like five minutes and then I get an error message saying something about packages didn't receive correctly. So I'm guessing it have to do with not all information is transferred when I use ethernet.
According to the Device Manager I use "Qualcomm Atheros AR8161 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30)" and the drivers is up to date.
Things I've tried:
Using a different ethernet cable.
Testing it on a different network (at my friends house)
Reinstalling drivers (both from Asus website and from Qualcomm's).
Disable wireless
Empty cache/cookies
Restarting computer/router/modem
Turning off firewall
Searching for virus (didn't find any)
Ipconfig /release /renew
Tested it on different browsers (I also affects games though)
Formatting my laptop
SSL and TSL is enable

I re-installed Windows 8 yesterday evening (thought it would be quicker than to cleanup and fix my old install) and then directly upgraded it to Windows 8.1. The problem I am experiencing is quite weird: The Operating System doesn't detect the network cable.
With that being said, do not jump straight to the "Did you turn it on and off again" questions. Here is what I have done so far:
Hardware-Side: Cross-check the cable with another computer --> Working fineCross-check the wall plug with another computer --> Working fineTest the connection with the BIOS's connection diagnostic utility --> Link detected
Software-Side: Checking if Windows was up to date --> Nothing to updateUpdating the motherboard's BIOS --> Not betterUpdating the LAN's drivers with the ones I found on the manufacturer's website --> Not better
I am wondering what is wrong with my installation. It was working A1 a few days ago, except for the issues I re-installed the operating system for.

My ISP provides service only via 802.11. I use laptop A most of the time. The captive portal for the service provider only allows one login per account at a time. The policy is intended to prevent multiple people sharing one account. It's just me, I'm the only user, but very occasionally I'd like to have a 2nd laptop access the internet simultaneously. No abuse, just the simple convenience of not having to logout from A if I need to use B for 30 seconds.
What I want to set up seems simple and it probably is:
WiFi Internet <---> Laptop A <---> ethernet cable <---> Laptop B
Such that Laptop B can share A's active WiFi connection without having to request its own unique address from the ISP.
At present, Laptop A has its network interfaces set up so:
- WiFi is connected, active, functional. Selected the "Yes turn on sharing and connect to devices" in sidebar.
- Under the wired network properties IP Version 4, I manually set addresses to be
IP 192.168.10.1
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 0.0.0.0
Laptop B has only a wired network, set to
IP 192.168.10.2
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.10.1
A & B can connect directly to each other, share folders, etc.
What do I need to do in order to get laptop B to transparently use A's WiFi connection? My guess is that A needs to be set up to do some routing between the internet side and the 192.168.10 subnet, and B needs to be set up to look to A as its "ISP" ... but I don't know where to begin.

Just curious ... do PC-to-PC file transfers count towards cable Internet service usage? For instance, if I move 10 GB of data from one PC to another in my Homegroup, is that 10 GB counted as part of the 100GB+ of cable data that I've used?

So I just installed Windows 8 on my gaming rig. I gotta say, after being skeptical of this whole OS for a while, installing it fresh and trying it out shows just how useful (and FAST) it can be.
The only thing about Windows 8 that isn't fast is my ethernet adapter. When connected, downloads are slow, pages take long to respond, videos are constantly choppy and buffering, etc. Looking at the ethernet connection in Task manager, it looks like the connection is being speed capped at 1.0 Mbps. The graph of the speed fluctuates up and down in the low range, but hits a wall at 1.0 mbps.
This wasn't the case when I had Win 7- I could easily pull 80 Mbps on speedtest.net (Chattanooga fibre optic internet FTW). My WiFi adapter in Win 8 also does not have this problem, but I want to use the wired connection because the campus wi-fi is unreliable. I have already updated the LAN drivers, trying both the Windows- suggested driver and the one from the manufacturer website. No difference. How I can start installing my steam games and not have it take 5 years?

I recently upgraded to Windows 8 Pro x64.
My wireless connection is fine, but my LAN isn't. This is a university subscription so there is a proxy server. I asked the school if they have activated my subscription and they said yes. I tried changing cables but it still would not connect. I know the proxy server settings are correct because there is also a wireless connection in school which uses the same settings.
I ran network diagnostics and it said that the connection between the cable and the internet is not working. When I open Chrome, it says that the DNS lookup failed. I tried resetting my TCP/IP, setting my preferred DNS address to 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222 but it still would not work.
I check my ethernet driver settings in Device Manager and it is fine and updated to the latest version.

just noticed my Vaio ethernet port isn't working. it says the adaptor is working normally, but when I plug in an ethernet cable is says the cable is not plugged in. I tried it with two different cables that work elsewhere.
I wonder if the laptop ethernet card is faulty? Wireless is working fine.
I only ever use it to hard connect the router during setup, so it could have been out of order even before my Win7 to 8.1 upgrade.

So I've been using this router, Belkin N+ wireless router F5D8235-4 v2, for a while now and It hasn't had problems most of the time and I've been using it fine with my DSL modem. My mother connects with her Nook tablet, my father with his laptop, and sometimes my phone and no problems. Until the other day when I randomly went to go on my computer I had no internet connection so I
1) Reset modem and router like I always do, still nothing.
2) Tried windows trouble shooting and gave me this message """"Ethernet" does not have a valid IP config".
3) I unplugged my Ethernet cable from my modem to the router and directly connected it from modem to computer and everything works fine and doesn't randomly lag out like before.

I recently put together a new 64-bit Windows 8 Build. Everything is running fine except my Ethernet connection.
I use the build in my office and my co-workers are consistently getting download speeds of 30+Mbps using speedtest.net. Unfortunately, my speeds were around 5Mbps.
I narrowed down the issue to a network driver conflict. After downloading and installing the latest drivers from Realtek, my internet speeds jumped to 30+Mbps on Speedtest. The only issue is everytime I reboot the computer, the same problem occurs. I have to fiddle around with device manager disabling/uninstalling the default drivers and/or reinstalling the Realtek drivers.
Windows keeps reverting back to the signed older driver causing the issue, instead of the newer unsigned version from Realtek.

I have broadband from virgin media with one of their superhubs made by netgear, I have a CCTV DVR plugged into this using a regular cat5 cable, the DVR will allow you to view 4 cctv cameras via the internet,
Android and blackberry phones can both connect to the router using wifi, an IBM laptop running XP also has no problems, the only thing that does have a problem is a new Toshiba laptop running windows 8,
If the DVR is plugged into router before win 8 connects then the Windows 8 machine cannot log on using wifi, it gives message saying restricted access and has no internet access, if you unplug the DVR Windows 8 machine logs on fine you can then plug DVR back in and laptop can browse all day with no problems, if you log off then try and log on again you get the same restricted access message again ...

Recently I have been intermittently getting disconnected from the internet while gaming / streaming. If I ran the troubleshooter, the error that I got was "Default gateway not available". Resetting my router/modem and restarting the PC every time it happened seemed to resolve this for a while. and is now accompanied by another error saying that "Ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP configuration. This is much more frequent now, every 10-20 minutes or so. I am on wired internet coming from the combo router/modem from my ISP/Cable co.
Attached is my ipconfig /all while working and after the error.

I bought a a Lenovo IdeaPad P400 Touch laptop last week, with Windows 8 64-bit OS. I went through the general setup and had the computer working in no time; wireless and Ethernet connections worked fine for a few days and then I began getting "Limited" connectivity errors on both the Wi-fi and Ethernet. After the initial setup, I ran windows update and tried to install vmVare, then I realized this "Limited Connectivity" problem. After that, I uninstalled the vmware and all other software I had installed since I received the laptop but internet connectivity was not restored.
Nearly frustrated over this, I restored my laptop to its initial (factory setup) status and reinstalled the Windows 8 OS that the manufacturer stored on a built-in D drive, using the Lenovo OneKey Recovery process. During the restoration process, I had to re run Windows setup (like a new computer). I had hoped this would reverse any issues I had with internet connectivity, but it did not work. In fact, Windows 8 could not connect to the internet during setup and I had to create a local account to finish the setup.
After completing the setup, I visited the windows 8 forums and tried using a recommended solution for re-setting tcp/ip (netsh winsock reset catalog and netsh int ip reset reset.log hit), restarted my laptop but the problem still persists.
I even ran the IPResetAll app posted by Chev65 but got this screen shot instead:
C:windowssystem32>pushdwindowssystem32driversetc
C:WindowsSystem32driversetc>attrib -h -s -r hosts
Path not found - C:WindowsSystem32driversetc
C:WindowsSystem32driversetc>echo 127.0.0.1 localhost 1>HOSTS
Access is denied.

A the moment I am stuck and can't use my laptop because I need to activate Windows online. Laptop keeps restarting telling me to activate Windows now.

I upgraded to windows 8 and have had no problem when I booted up my compaq presario. I was not online went to the control panel to troubleshoot my internet connection and was told that my Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration and that "Default gateway" is not available. I am hardwired into my AT&T router (the same router that is serving three other laptops in my home without any problems). I downloaded the v1.7.0.0 driver but I'm not sure if it installed as I am still having to manually reset my ethernet adaptor via the control panel each time I restart the computer.
