Network / Sharing :: Ethernet Doesn't Have A Valid IP / Gateway Not Available?
Jun 1, 2014
Recently I have been intermittently getting disconnected from the internet while gaming / streaming. If I ran the troubleshooter, the error that I got was "Default gateway not available". Resetting my router/modem and restarting the PC every time it happened seemed to resolve this for a while. and is now accompanied by another error saying that "Ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP configuration. This is much more frequent now, every 10-20 minutes or so. I am on wired internet coming from the combo router/modem from my ISP/Cable co.
Attached is my ipconfig /all while working and after the error.

Nothing would fix the problem ""Ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP configuration".
After playing a match in "League of Legends" with my desktop I noticed my ping went up and I disconnected right after, I looked at my network icon in the taskbar and saw an yellow error mark. I clicked on the network icon and it said "Unidentified Network" and "Limited". I tried to troubleshoot the problem and the problem found was: "Ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP configuration. I ran ipconfig with the cmd tool and I noticed Ipv4 Address was 169.254.171.146 (As ive heard that means windows is using a default ip by itself).
I have a lot of devices in my house like laptops and smart-phones that work perfectly good. One thing that did work was sharing 3G internet from my iPhone to my desktop via usb.
Solutions tried: Resetting router, disabled the "allow computer to turn of this device to save power" in ethernet options, tried different cables, restarting pc and updated drivers (installing the driver to a usb from my laptop).

A few days ago I had to restart my PC after a game froze. When I booted up again I found I was unable to connect to the internet. Troubleshooting gave the error 'Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration.'
I can connect to the modem with my laptop using the same cable, so I don't think its an issue with the router or cable. I was told that programs could cause issues with the network adapters, so after backing up my data I wiped my computer and re-installed windows from a bootable usb.
Here is the IP config data.
I've run the flushdns file, but it seems to timeout while running the Ipconfig /renew command.
Following instructions from another thread I was told to reset the TCP/IP stack. Running the command gave the following.
From there I followed instructions to use regedit to change permissions, which enabled me to run the command without errors, however I was still unable to connect to the router when my computer reset.

I'm using an ethernet cord to connect to my internet and it has been working well until Thursday morning when I turned on my laptop (Windows 8) to see a yellow triangle sign in the bottom right hand corner, in front of the ethernet connected symbol. Since then I haven't been able been able to access the internet from my computer. When I hover over it, it says that it is an "Unidentified network" and there is "No internet access". I've run the Windows 8 troubleshooting and it says that the problem found was ""Ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP configuration", but I'm unsure how to fix it.
I'm thinking that the problem is to do with my computer rather than my network, because I've tried another laptop (Windows 7) through the same ethernet cable and connection and the internet works fine on the other laptop. I've tried so many fixes that I've found online, with none of them actually working. Yesterday I even tried a full system reset, where I reinstalled Windows 8, repartitioned and wiped everything off the hard drive, but it still appears have the exact same problem.
Today I also purchased and tried a new ethernet cable which didn't work, so I then purchased a USB to Ethernet adapter, to make sure that it wasn't my ethernet port on my laptop that was faulty. That didn't work either, and the same problem still remains.

I've had my modem connected straight to my computer via ethernet cable and never really had any problems. I recently downloaded itunes to listen music on my ipod and i know this probably isn't the problem but weeks later i was prompted to download an update for itunes and of course I clicked restart after update but start up computer and internet did not work. It was this "Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration."
I've tried resetting the modem and nothing. It is worth noting that I reformatted to see if it would fix it but nothing. but once i connect my modem directly to my laptop it works perfectly fine. I also including attachments so i could possibly be better assisted. Also worth noting my motherboard is a Asus crosshair formula IV which unfortunately doesn't have updated windows 8 drivers but never gave me problems before. the ipconfig with black background is the laptop ipconfig.

So I've been using this router, Belkin N+ wireless router F5D8235-4 v2, for a while now and It hasn't had problems most of the time and I've been using it fine with my DSL modem. My mother connects with her Nook tablet, my father with his laptop, and sometimes my phone and no problems. Until the other day when I randomly went to go on my computer I had no internet connection so I
1) Reset modem and router like I always do, still nothing.
2) Tried windows trouble shooting and gave me this message """"Ethernet" does not have a valid IP config".
3) I unplugged my Ethernet cable from my modem to the router and directly connected it from modem to computer and everything works fine and doesn't randomly lag out like before.

I bought a a Lenovo IdeaPad P400 Touch laptop last week, with Windows 8 64-bit OS. I went through the general setup and had the computer working in no time; wireless and Ethernet connections worked fine for a few days and then I began getting "Limited" connectivity errors on both the Wi-fi and Ethernet. After the initial setup, I ran windows update and tried to install vmVare, then I realized this "Limited Connectivity" problem. After that, I uninstalled the vmware and all other software I had installed since I received the laptop but internet connectivity was not restored.
Nearly frustrated over this, I restored my laptop to its initial (factory setup) status and reinstalled the Windows 8 OS that the manufacturer stored on a built-in D drive, using the Lenovo OneKey Recovery process. During the restoration process, I had to re run Windows setup (like a new computer). I had hoped this would reverse any issues I had with internet connectivity, but it did not work. In fact, Windows 8 could not connect to the internet during setup and I had to create a local account to finish the setup.
After completing the setup, I visited the windows 8 forums and tried using a recommended solution for re-setting tcp/ip (netsh winsock reset catalog and netsh int ip reset reset.log hit), restarted my laptop but the problem still persists.
I even ran the IPResetAll app posted by Chev65 but got this screen shot instead:
C:windowssystem32>pushdwindowssystem32driversetc
C:WindowsSystem32driversetc>attrib -h -s -r hosts
Path not found - C:WindowsSystem32driversetc

I am trying to troubleshoot a network connectivity issue for my Mom & Dad's laptop. It is an HP 64-bit running Windows 8.1. Up until this morning, it was able to connect to wi-fi. My mother was on the internet with no problems. They have my-fi with AT&T and my dad's laptop and tablet connect fine.
We have tried:
-Restarting the HP taking the battery out uninstalling the wi-fi network adapter
-Restarting and letting it reinstall for getting the network
-Manually adding the network back in
and nothing worked.
So, I took the laptop back to my house and connected it directly into my router via Ethernet cable, but to my surprise, it showed connected, but no internet connection. I ran the troubleshooter and it said that "Ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP config. I restarted the laptop with the ethernet plugged in, but it came back up with limited connectivity and the same error message. I tried connecting to my wifi at my house and again, it sees the various networks, but will not connect. I get a message when I hit the connect button that it is Checking network requirements, but then after about 30-45 seconds it says Can't connect to this network. All of the other laptops/pc's/tablets and phones are connecting just fine.

I have a brand new PC workstation.
Everything was fine, until recently, when I turn on my PC, I don't get an immediate internet connection. This is happening nearly everytime now with some frequency.
I reset the router/modem and everything is fine after that, so all is good.
But it is still frustrating. I get, "Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration".
Following are screenshots of my 'ipconfig' and 'Network Connection Status' before (unsuccessful) and after (successful) internet access:
You will see from the above that there is certainly something different with the data...
Incidentally, I did find a nice youtube 'tutorial' in relation to this subject title about manually configurating the settings:
I haven't tried this yet and that is probably down to the fact that I can't find my alternate DNS server setting (the very last box to fill in - watch the video and you will know what I mean) ???

Randomly, my wifi disconnects many times a day (Limitted conectivity or ), sometimes every 5 minutes. I solve the problem temporarly by:
1.)Running the Troubleshoot of the wifi connection, and it resets the adapter automatically( and at the end of the troubleshotting it says: "WiFi doesnt Have a valid IP configuration, or sometimes The default gateway is not available")
2.)Sometimes the Troubleshooter cant reset the adapter, and I have to do it manually.
By resetting the adapter, the problem is solved only temporarily, because I have to do that mayby 20 times a day, sometimes more, sometimes less.
I use Windows 8 on Asus K55 VJ , Intel Centrino 2230 adapter with up to date driver.

I recently got windows 8 and have found it to be rather volatile. I use WiFi in my house on my desktop Intel PC and my computer strangely sometimes works to get to the internet and sometimes it doesn't coming up with connection limited and after troubleshooting it "doesn't have a valid ip configuration". Ive tried the netsh winsock and the ip reset commands in command prompt (admin) and nothing happens i'm really at a loss. According to some people A/V programs can mess stuff up so i uninstalled them.

I have a relatively new HP Envy (H8-1485ea), with no modifications made, running windows 8. I have had the been using it with a wired connection at university with no problems and on return home connected wirelessly. Initially I encountered no issues, however after about 2 days the status of the connection went to limited and has remained that way since.
On running the windows troubleshooter it stated that the "wifi doesn't have a valid ip configuration".
I searched and found to run the commands which resolved similar problems:
netsh winsock reset catalog
netsh int ip reset rest.log hit
However as shown in the attached image for the second command resetting failed. I have also attached my ip configuration.

My ISP provides service only via 802.11. I use laptop A most of the time. The captive portal for the service provider only allows one login per account at a time. The policy is intended to prevent multiple people sharing one account. It's just me, I'm the only user, but very occasionally I'd like to have a 2nd laptop access the internet simultaneously. No abuse, just the simple convenience of not having to logout from A if I need to use B for 30 seconds.
What I want to set up seems simple and it probably is:
WiFi Internet <---> Laptop A <---> ethernet cable <---> Laptop B
Such that Laptop B can share A's active WiFi connection without having to request its own unique address from the ISP.
At present, Laptop A has its network interfaces set up so:
- WiFi is connected, active, functional. Selected the "Yes turn on sharing and connect to devices" in sidebar.
- Under the wired network properties IP Version 4, I manually set addresses to be
IP 192.168.10.1
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 0.0.0.0
Laptop B has only a wired network, set to
IP 192.168.10.2
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.10.1
A & B can connect directly to each other, share folders, etc.
What do I need to do in order to get laptop B to transparently use A's WiFi connection? My guess is that A needs to be set up to do some routing between the internet side and the 192.168.10 subnet, and B needs to be set up to look to A as its "ISP" ... but I don't know where to begin.

I've recently begun encountering connectivity problems. Seemingly randomly, the wifi connection becomes limited and webpages/games time out. Whenever I repair the connection it is always at the "reset wi-fi adapter" step that it seems to resolve the issue.
Steps I've taken thus far are:
Uncheck the box under my network adapters settings that said "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"show hidden devices under the network adapter device manager and try to uninstall all but my ethernet and wifi connections. aside from these two connections I wanted to keep, there were two bluetooth devices that I don't use/need, two adapters hidden with odd names, and quite a few WAN miniports. I tried uninstalling all of these...some uninstalled, others uninstalled but came back with a restart, and some wouldn't uninstall at all.
Anyway, below is my ipconfig:

I just got a new laptop (Samsung Ativ 7) and it worked great for a week on the router I have at home. I just moved into university housing and the wifi seemed to work for about a day, but since then (about 3 days now) it continuously disconnects from the internet. Like every 30 seconds... It's bad. If I'm lucky I'll get a few minutes, though strangely the problem seems to be getting worse each day and my time online seems to be getting shorter each day.
When I run the troubleshooter, it says the default gateway is not available and "fixes" the problem, which lasts for a few seconds/minutes before it reverts. Every now and then the problem will be "Wi-Fi doesn't have a valid IP configuration." That problem gets "fixed" and the internet never works, instead I have to trouble shoot again to see the gateway one, then I get a little bit of wifi. Lately I have to run troubleshooter multiple times before I get any results.
I think I'm having DNS issues, but what the cause or the solution is, I do not know... The lease is always listed for about 5 minutes (though I don't always make it that far) and when I try to connect the college VPN service, it says "Limited Access - DNS Failure."

while ago my internet on my laptop got messed, I reset the router and the Internet went down for days, but when it came back it wasn't working for my laptop, but everything else. Trouble shooting has told me it's a DNS server not responding, and now it's telling me the wifi doesn't have a valid ip config. I've tried many things, like with the internet protocals, the command prompt fix which also hasn't worked, and I'm stuck on what to do.
When I click on my my internet protocols v4/v6 it gives me the option to install maybe that's something or not.

For the last week or so, I've been having issues with my ASUS notebook disconnecting from my wireless network or having a limited connection. This would happen maybe twice a day, but eventually I went online and I found that I had an outdated driver for my Intel Centrino Wireless N-2230, and as soon as I downloaded the latest driver, my notebook would disconnect every 5 minutes or so. Running the troubleshooter just keeps returning the same thing; Default gateway not available. It also does this annoying thing where it'll disconnect and reconnect over and over again, so quickly that the network sharing center can't even register it's happening. I've tried resetting the WINSOCK, IPv4 TCP/IP, and IPv6 TCP/IP stacks, I've tried a clean boot to see if it was a startup program affecting my connections, and I've changed my power settings so they don't turn off my adapter. I even tired booting my computer in safe mode, which didn't work.

I'm trying to set up my router to the new internet connection and get the wifi going but for the life of me I cant get it set up. The internet connection itself is fine, from modem to pc. Once I have the modem in the mix,it gets no/limited connectivity and cannot reach the setups. I have tried the classic 192.168.2.1 and 192.168.1.1 and about 5 other variations, along with 'http://router'. My router is a Belkin N300 Wireless N Router. If I use a command prompt and do 'ipconfig', there is no ip address beside 'gateway default' once the router is connected. I have reset my router to factory settings. I've tried using a static ip address for my computer [though not sure if i did it correctly]. My DHCP is enabled.
