Network / Sharing :: DNS Server Isn't Responding
Jun 2, 2014
Today, my internet connection at home encountered a problem. I can connect to the WiFi but no internet access. Usually there's a yellow exclamation mark, but this one is fine, full signal but no internet access. Same thing goes to my iPod, can connect to the WiFi but no internet access.
To my surprise, all my sister's laptop and her Apple devices also the same thing, can connect but no access. I wonder what could be the problem. I use the troubleshoot on my laptop and it says "The DNS server is not responding" and it states that it can't be fix. I already restart my router but still same thing. Right now I'm using my phone's hotspot to connect to the internet and post this here.
My torrent is still downloading at full speed.

I have a Windows 8 x64 rig with a wireless card connecting to Linksys router connected to a cable modem. I also have Hamachi and Teamviewer installed, they add their own setup to the network page, don't know if they are the culprits but with DHCP I have no problem.
Everything works well until I try to set up a static IP on my PC (if I enable DHCP for IPv4 - no prob).
What I did: Set a static IP to avoid conflict with other PCs, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 (auto fills), gateway = my router's IP (192.168.1.1), DNS servers = took from my ISP's site (also tried Google public DNS).
What happens: my PC connects to the wifi as I can browse the router's settings page. But any website I try to access leads to a DNS server not responding. As soon as I reset back to obtain IP automatically everything works.

Previously I made a thread t hat when I sometimes load 2-3 tabs or more, I get page cannot be displayed and I have to refresh each of them until they load, it's like the traffic isn't enough to load several tabs at a time.. Either way troubleshooting gives me this:
Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (DNS server) is not responding
In Sharing Center > click the wifi info > Properties > Networking > TCP/IPv4 Properties > All set to automatically detect, even if I inserted the DNS addresses above into manually in IPv4...
In properties I see the same being set, no mismatching DNS servers..

while ago my internet on my laptop got messed, I reset the router and the Internet went down for days, but when it came back it wasn't working for my laptop, but everything else. Trouble shooting has told me it's a DNS server not responding, and now it's telling me the wifi doesn't have a valid ip config. I've tried many things, like with the internet protocals, the command prompt fix which also hasn't worked, and I'm stuck on what to do.
When I click on my my internet protocols v4/v6 it gives me the option to install maybe that's something or not.

I want basicly to home host a VPN, and that is what i do at the moment. So i tried with my friend after i did finish the setup (i did setup the VPN in the Windows Networks interface, over "Incomming Connections"), and i did portforward 1723, and the worst is, that when my friend connects upto the VPN from his PC at his home (not Local), to my IP, then it says on my PC he is connected.
But here comes the problems, at his PC, the Network Icon turns into a yellow warning icon, and when he clicks troubleshoot, it says "DNS Server does not respond", but at my PC here, it even says he is connected to the VPN, but also says no connection over IPv4, and the same on his side.
What can we do to get a connections from my PC to his PC, over the VPN, so he can access the Internet over my Internet instead, like lets say he has a blockade on for example www.facebook.com at home (which he of course doesn't has, it is just an example), and he connects to my VPN, as he accesses my Internet instead, he can open www.facebook.com, instead of having it blocked (one of the main purposes for a VPN, and the data encryption of course).
Here some screenshots:
My PC (Language = German):
My Friends PC (Language = Norwegian):
And as you can see on my PC, it says he is connected, and as you can see on his PC, it also says he is connected, but he cant access the Internet, or anything else related to the web. Now prepare for the funny part: We were on Skype, and as he connected to the VPN, and "lost" the Internett Access, we were still talking (i guess that's because Skype still runs over the home network, while the rest tries to access internet over the VPN connection .

Why does Windows Networking always seem to hose things up ( Linux works EVERY time)
I have two computers on the SAME test private LAN one Whitehorse (W2003 server) and the other Blackdog (Windows 8 Enterprise) both enabled "Shareable and Visible".
View from W2003 -- can see and access disks C,D, and F on Windows 8 Computer
View from Windows 8 - Networking shows the computer Whitehorse (W2003 server) but can't access any disks etc (or even its printer). PING even fails but Windows 8 obviously knows it's on the Network because its found it. The stupid Windows diagnostics when you click Diagnose doesn't work at all --in fact I've NEVER found the network diagnostic panel of the slightest bit of support ever.
I've switched off firewalls etc while testing so there's no security rubbish to take care of while I'm trying to get this to work. LAN is purely LOCAL -- no computer is on "the other side" of a router.
Both machines can access independently the Internet through a Local router and connections are via LAN cable so nothing should be simpler. !! But can I get this to work !!.
I had a similar problem with W7 but it seemed to "Disappear" without me actually doing anything -- the proverbial "Ghost in the Machine" I expect.
(Windows Networking Grrrhhhhhh! -- I'm not particularly technical with this stuff but any time I've used Networking with Linux it works STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BOX and there's no problem sharing from or to windows. !!)
Note -- Other W7 / Linux / XP computers connected to this SAME LAN (currently switched off) have NO problem accessing the server -- It's just this Windows 8 Machine (Windows 8 x-64 Enterprise version).

I don't know what happened but today when I tried to enter IE I received this message:
The proxy server isn't responding. Check your proxy settings. Go to Tools > Internet Options > Connections. If you are on a LAN, click "LAN settings". Make sure your firewall settings aren't blocking your web access.
If I go to LAN and remove the block with a check beside the proxy sever IE starts, however, if I log off and try to reenter the proxy server box has a check mark.

I'm trying to map a Server 2003 network drive in Windows 8.1
For some reason, in the 'Map Network Drive' window, the server doesn't show under 'Network' when I click the 'browse' button. Additionally the server doesn't show under 'Network' in file manager but I can ping it just fine.
Is there perhaps some kind of incompatibility between Win 8.1 and Server 2003 that could be causing this ...

Last night my wife's laptop couldn't connect to the internet. Error message was DNS servers not responding. I unplug power cables and Ethernet cables from cable modem and router (WRT54GL DD-WRT). That didn't seem to work. Today, she was able to get on certain text heavy websites. The WiFi icon said that she had internet access, but still very limited access and slow. I try DNS Release from router's setup page and DNS Renew. I also tried to release and renew through command prompt, but nothing has worked. I can get full access if I bypass the router and connect to my Desktop. Is my router dieing?
Here is my Desktop's ipconfig /all when connected to the router:
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.2.9200]
(c) 2012 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
C:WINDOWSsystem32>ipconfig /all

So I have the piece of crap PC known as the Archos 9. Never use it anymore because I got a real laptop.
I just bought a WD My passport 1tb hard drive. So I want to use it as an external network drive.
I would leave my Archos 9 in a corner somewhere with the HD connected, with file sharing. It is touchscreen and has only a built in mouse. No keyboard.
How would I be able to set it up? It overheat sometimes and lags like hell. Has no Fan which might make it suitable for being in a dark corner
Any OS's that don't strain the system a lot and are not outdated? I heard of some other OS's that do this really well, with not much power usage.

I had a Windows 7 environment and just recently purchased a Windows 8 laptop.. .well win 8.1 Pro to be exact. On all of my windows 7 machines I can ping 192.168.1.199 and get solid response and go to that address in the browser and no issue. On the new Window 8.1 laptop I ping that address and sometimes get 1 timeout with 3 responses... other times it just times out and sometimes I get all 4 replies... The print server has a web interface but I am unable to connect to it at all - is there something I need to set in Win 8?

I have a simple samba 2.3.3 file server named server3 with three shares (commons, financial, and software) connected to 5 XP workstations all belonging to the workgroup called LINUX. All of the XP machines have normal access to server3 and shared folders on each other.
We've recently add two Windows 8.1 workstations which could not see anything on the network until I add the LSA dword value for LmCompatibilityLevel. Though I can see the server and map the drives now; I still cannot view the files on any of the server3 shares from either of the 8.1 machines. I can however view shared files on all of the other XP machines from the 8.1's and all of the XPs can see them as well.
I can watch the 8.1 machines log on to the samba server and see that the user is given root privileges so I'm thinking that it is Windows that is keeping the files from being displayed.

I can ping our work server (windows 8 server) as well as connect to it using a remote desktop connection, it just won't map as a network drive.
I had this problem a few days ago, so I tried everything I could think of (dns flush, ip config release/renew, restarting, disconnecting from network drive & re-mapping) and nothing would let me back on. I did a system restore to 2 weeks ago and it works again. So of course then windows wants to do its updates, I let the updates happen and the problem returns.
It seems like the windows updates are the root of the problem. For now I'll have to restore to before the updates & turn off the updates.

I have a new Windows 8-notebook connected to a workgroup-ethernet-network via router,to which a windows [version unknown]-server is connected and 6 other clients,2 of them macs,4 xp-pcs.
On all machines,3 other machines resp shares are constantly visible in "network places":
1 the server-share
2 a client-1 share (which has no internet access)
3 a client-2-with-internet-access-share
The notebook gets internet via the wall-plugged lan, from a router-plugged DSL-router. All issues mentioned here are not dependent on which lan-wall-socket is used. (there are 3 in each room). There is no wlan-accesspoint.
Issue: The notebook is _not _seeing_ (not in net places, and not forceable) the server-share_, despite the fact, that the share has been used before to install a bigger client-server software, which worked.
First appearance: Some day someone tried to access a lan-wall-plug-connected printer for printing, which at that time could be seen in network places,as then could the server; after which _both_ disappeared.
Unfortunately, above said client-server-sw is not working anymore on the notebook. How can I bring back the server-share to the Windows 8-notebook?

I want to move files from my old Desktop (Windows 2000 Server) to my new Laptop (Windows 8.1 Pro).
I have a Router, an Ethernet Cable and a Crossover Cable.
Note: The Router (older Netgear) always shows up as "Unidentified network". However, I can successfully share the Laptop's Internet Connection to it via the Ethernet port. It is joined to the HomeGroup and is a Private network.
The Router's IP Address is 192.168.1.1 which I can connect to using the Smartphone over Wi-Fi.
IP Config for the Ethernet Adapter is as follows.
Code: Ethernet adapter Ethernet: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : XXXXXXXX DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::9905:4ead:5bc5:1e44%3(Preferred) Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.30.68(Preferred) Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : DHCPv6 IAID . . . . . . . . . . . : 54302478 DHCPv6 Client DUID. . . . . . . . : XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : fec0:0:0:ffff::1%1 fec0:0:0:ffff::2%1 fec0:0:0:ffff::3%1 NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled

I have strange issue with Windows 8.1 x64 Pro with Media Center. Since it was upgraded from 8, there have been issues with Software Store. Despite internet connection working fine with Firefox and other applications, Store would not connect to the internet. After long investigation I found out that Proxy server setting in Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings must be disabled in order to get Store working again. For some reason proxy server only stays disabled for the current session, which means when the windows is rebooted it comes back enabled again. My question is how to make it stay permanently disabled, as I don't use any proxy.

When I'm booted to Win 7 the TV finds the media server no problem, but in Win 8 on same machine it's Server Not Found. All the connections are Ethernet and the TV shows as connected in the router, so the problem is with Win 8. It's probably irrelevant but I have installed the Win 8 Media Center pack.

Sys: Windows 8.1 Pro clients attached to MS 2003 server domain. (yes I know its best to have a higher win server version with 8.1, but i do not have that currently)
Ok, so the problem is that roaming profiles and folder redirection work but on only SOME of the windows 8.1 clients!!!!
How can these both work fine on only SOME of my essentially identical workstations?
I realize that I need different Profile types for the different OS's. I have applied the V4 registry edit and created a V4 default profile in my sysvol directory on the DC so that the workstations get a proper V4 starting profile.
All PC's are in same OU container.
My GPO's for roaming profiles and folder redirection have not changed from my XP workstations, Windows server 2003 domain controller.
So I create a new user, and log into one of the Windows 8.1 client machines on my local lan. Wow, profile works, V4 created in the profile share, redirection works perfectly. So I log out. I then remote to an identical PC across my wan. Log in as same user and it works fine, get the redirected desktop, and profile. But now the fun begins. I log out to complete the profile "swap" back to the server. I try to log back in and the disaster starts. (Yes, I have triple checked my permissions on all shares etc.)
I get the "DESKTOP cannot be loaded error". Logs show REDIRECTION SUCCESSFUL for my desktop!!! What the?
I have received the "redirection gpo not applied till next login" log, but it is intermittent. Its like the OS does does not know it nose from its butt! How can my desktop be redirected successfully and I get a message that my DESKTOP IS NOT AVAILABLE?
So I go back to my local lan machine and try logging in as this same user, IT WORKS FINE OVER AND OVER AGAIN!
How I can get my roaming profiles and folder redirection to work normally with my Windows 8.1 clients on my MS 2003 domain server?

I have setup a n54l hp micro server with windows 8 as my home server and shared a folder with password protection set to off (needed to enable guest account for this to work btw which seemed strange)
Now file transfer between my windows pcs is fast (30MB/s over wifi) but to my android phone and tablet the speed is horribly slow (30kb/s i.e. 1000x slower)
Before I used a readynas duo as my file server and my transfer speeds with my phone were about 0.5MB/s and on pc about 5/MB/s
I have tried different applications on my phone with no change in speed (currently using es file explorer)
