Network / Sharing :: Can Network Type Reset When Working
Sep 15, 2014
Today I was working for a couple of hours without any problems on my Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit, processing many files and saving them over my network folders.
Suddenly, at one point, when I was about to save a file over a network folder, the system asked me whether I want to turn file sharing and network discovery on.
I believe I had set it up many weeks ago right after system installation and haven't touched it since then. I've also noticed that my LAN network status was somehow changed to "Public" (the same happened to my Kaspersky Internet Security firewall settings related to networks, but as far as I know it reads those information from the system settings).
I know it is possible to manually change network type and turn on/off files sharing and network discovery but I haven't do so for sure. I don't thing there's a hotkey combination that does so and I could select it accidentally. Thus, I believe the system might have changed / reseted it by itself, but... it's simply odd.

Something about 8 is diff than 7 with regard to setting up Network, and Type of network. This seems to default any new network connection to "Private", whatever that means. In order to share in a Homegroup I need the network type to be "Home".

I installed hamachi to create a VPN between desktop home and laptop, but I accidentally set the Hamachi Network to Public, so I cannot access from the other device, I have read that I need to enable the option to change the network type.
I have already tried by right-clicking network, but HAMACHI network doesnt appear in the list as it is a virtual device.

I'm trying to set up VPN to connect immediately upon startup.
I decided to try setting up my VPN in Windows itself, instead of using Open VPN as before.
This is the Windows VPN functionality that's available from the Metro themed interface and . But it's so dumbed-down that I can't even see what type of VPN connection this actually is.
If this connection if PPTP or L2TP? Or something else?
Whichever it is, is that connection considered to have integrity or is it more or less cracked?

After I installed VMware-player and VirtualBox, I started to get this error "The connection Was Reset" (got that on firefox, different name on Chrome since it has an error code, but leads to the same error).
Weird thing is that I can still explore some of the website that are open, for instance I leave a Facebook tab or Twitter tab, or any other site (not necessarily a social network). But if try to open a "new" site, which is not explored yet, then I get the error.
Things I tried so far:
1) delete cache, doesn't work at all.
2) Change the MTU Value, that was quite interesting, since I do get an error when i try to ping with my current value, but when i find a value that apparently should work, after I set that value as my MTU, I get the error with that value, so i go down a few numbers until i get a working value, set the MTU and error again. and so on.
3) Made a repair of my windows 8 install, preserving my personal files, but didn't work.
4) Only thing that seems to work is restart my pc.
I didn't have time yet to try to reinstall my antivirus (Avast) .

I downloaded Win 8 based on XP on the machine--not this one--in December, but just installed it a few days ago.Win 8 is 32-bit. Apparently the machine does not have the proper BIOS lines for 64 bit. When I registered all the machine information was listed, but if the reader needs it again.
A couple of times I managed to reach the Internet, but mostly--and now, consistently--I can't. Most of the time, but not all the time, I can ping the Internet server by its dns address, but not by name, and therefore, I cannot use a browser or anything. I have gone thru all the various functions that the OS offers, and the result is that the dns resolver is not working.
Additional information not in the sign-up sheet: Internet connects to cable modem SBV5222 (Motorola) thru a D-Link DIR-632 router. The computer on which Win 8 is installed dual-boots to PCLinuxOs, which has no trouble connecting to the Internet.
For what it's worth, if anything, this machine, on the same network, runs Win 7-64 without a problem, but the dual-boot installation of PCLinuxOs64 a few days ago also has a dns resolver problem. This machine uses different hardware from the other machine on which I'm trying to get Win 8 to work.

just noticed my Vaio ethernet port isn't working. it says the adaptor is working normally, but when I plug in an ethernet cable is says the cable is not plugged in. I tried it with two different cables that work elsewhere.
I wonder if the laptop ethernet card is faulty? Wireless is working fine.
I only ever use it to hard connect the router during setup, so it could have been out of order even before my Win7 to 8.1 upgrade.

I am using Windows 8.1 and all the computers in the network have good speed but only one PC has internet issues.
I even reinstalled Windows but that didn't solve my issue.
I even reset the router, upgraded its firmware but all in vain.
If I disable the network adapter and enable it then the internet works for like five minutes but then it stops working again. I even changed the wire connecting the PC to the router.
I have also disabled the firewall.

I am a complete technophobe but have just brought a Toshiba Satellite laptap (top of the range) with windows 8. I'm just about getting the hang of it but I am having problems running any app or desktop application that uses my internet (wireless broadband).
The internet is working because I have a netbook which is still fine - although it is not the most powerful or speedy of connections.I don't want to do much with it - download some music, browse through some pages etc Is it possible that my internet connection is just not up to the all singing all dancing windows 8?

I have a VPN connection from home to work and now that I have moved to Windows 8 I can't get it to work. I have tried pretty much everything I can think of and find on forums and YouTube videos, eg turning off Norton (virus and firewall), opening ports on my router and configuring all manner of settings for the VPN connection.
I have my old Win7 laptop and I can still instantly connect to the VPN using that. So, I have copied all of the settings from there, but still no result.
I constantly get the 'Error 800' message (Unable to establish the VPN connection).
One video showed the steps of setting it up and there were no mysteries to it. It was pretty much all default settings.

Is there a way to setup network profiles or something so that when I bring my Surface Pro to work and connect to the wireless network there it will use the static ip address I have but when I disconnect and then connect to my home wifi it will go back to DHCP? On my MacBook Pro I can go into the network settings and change the location profile I have setup for networks but I don't see anything like this for Windows 8.

I have Remote Desktop Sharing enabled in my Windows 7 laptop
I have installed third party RDP server in my Macbook Pro
I have enabled Remote Desktop Sharing in Windows 8 laptop

I tried using both IP and netBIOS name. Ping works just fine in both ways.
Now, One thing is clear. something is wrong in Windows 8 settings or something.
assuming that Remote Support is allowed in here... is there something I am missing in Windows 8 configuration?

I have a Dell Inspiron 530 and I cannot get WOL to work.
I have installed a new TP-LINK TG-3468 Network Card, which supports WOL.
Remote Wake Up is enabled in the BIOS, as are the usual required settings on the Network Card properties.
However whenever I hibernate, sleep, or shutdown my PC, the lights switch off on the Network Card so it is no longer receiving a connection.
Running Windows 8.1 - have also disabled Fast Startup .

Whenever I try to play online games with my friends and talk on skype, calls would get dropped and I would lag really hard in the game. I have tried clicking on troubleshoot problems but I would always get resetting adapter and it would say fixed network adapter and access point but that did not work at all. My brother who also has the same laptop as me does not have this issue I would look at his bars and its full and tried checking his connection properties and such but they were similar to mine.

This morning I installed an optional update from Windows Update. It was Ralink Technology WLAN 802.11 wireless LAN card.
Since then, when I try to print to my wireless network printer, the network would disconnect then come back on after a while. The update shows up in Update History as successfully installed but not in the installed updates. System restore is of no support here. The network configuration page shows normal. The web does not appear to be affected. I made a new network connection for the printer but it did not work.
Is there a way to reverse this update or should I uninstall the 802.11 LAN card and let windows re-install anew.
The printer is a HP Officejet Pro 8600e

I connected an Ethernet cable at my workplace to a Windows 8 laptop. At the bottom right in desktop, the network symbol has a yellow exclamation sign and says "No internet access"/"Limited". This is a secured intranet, so I logged in with my company credentials when the browser started.
The IE browser connects to the internet normally. When I open metro apps such as Weather, it says the Internet is offline.

My old computer was running Win 8.1. The new Computer came with 8. I only have one monitor so I was using Remote Desktop to access the old computer and transfer things over. At some point I decided to upgrade the new one to 8.1. Now they're both on 8.1 That's the only thing that changed, but Remote Desktop stopped connecting. I can access folders and such across the network. I can log into the old one with Team Viewer but Remote Desktop will not connect. It keeps saying the other computer is offline or does not allow remote connections (it does, I checked multiple times) is there something that changed in 8.1 that would stop Remote Desktop from working?
Out of curiosity I tried using Remote Desktop from my laptop and it connected to the old computer fine. So it must be something on the new one.
Edit: I've now also tried connecting from the new PC to the laptop with RD and it gave me the same error about the laptop being offline or something
Edit 2: Now I tried it again so I could get a screenshot of the error message and it worked fine.

I am facing a strange problem with my internet connection on Windows 8.
I have a netgear WNR612 wifi router and two laptops connected to it running Windows 7 on first and Windows 8 on second.
The connection in Windows 8 laptop shows sufficient signal strength but when I try to access internet, it does only shows connecting. I have changed browsers, wifi router, adsl router, released and reconnected IP address, forgot and re-added wifi network, reset wifi router to factory almost everything.
The strange part is that as soon as the other Windows 7 laptop is disconnected from the network, Windows 8 internet start working fine. I have tested this many times and there is no doubt in this behavior.
I dont know whether the problem is in any update installed on Windows 8 the older Dell Wireless 1703 wifi card or some virus in the other Windows 7 laptop.
My ipconfig output:
Ethernet adapter Bluetooth Network Connection:
Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Bluetooth Device (Personal Area Network)
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : F4-B7-E2-59-1E-42
[Code] .....
Note that I have assigned preferred IP addresses to both laptops based on MAC.

I use a small usb modem for my internet access and using a usb wifi adaptor and a virtual wifi router I was able to share my internet around home quite affordably.
Every now and again the software 'virtualrouter' would cause a crash. Maybe once every 3 months.
When I updated to 8.1 the software no longer worked, nor did any other. What's more it cause a DPC-Watchdog violation within a few minutes.
When I say the software doesn't run, one of two things happen. My old program 'virtualrouter' runs as normal, but none of my devices can connect. The network is available, but connection is impossible.
With other programs I get told that the wifi adaptor is not enabled. Which it is.
Something has changed in the upgrade and I don't know what. Every option and test I've run and enabling of virtualisation says that it should work. But then the BSOD arrives.

Everything is up to date...connecting to LAN works fine.

I installed hyper v on my machine which is running Windows 8.1. Then I created a Virtual Switch on my wireless network. After that, it was not working in the VM but the wireless connection in the host was working fine. After that, when I connected to a different wireless network, it did not work. I deleted the bridge, uninstalled hyper v, but it is still not working. I installed hyper v again, but it is still not working. The wireless connection connects to the wireless network after putting the password, but does not give network connectivity to the internet.
I need to get the wireless connection to work again.

I'm having problems with my Asus NV56VM laptop (windows 8). Whenever I try to use an ethernet cable to access internet I either get a SSL-error, the website doesn't load at all or it loads VERY slowly and not the whole website (it says that I have internet acces and that it's not limited). Wireless works fine though.
I've also tested playing some games (ex Call of duty) and it works fine for like five minutes and then I get an error message saying something about packages didn't receive correctly. So I'm guessing it have to do with not all information is transferred when I use ethernet.
According to the Device Manager I use "Qualcomm Atheros AR8161 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30)" and the drivers is up to date.
Things I've tried:
Using a different ethernet cable.
Testing it on a different network (at my friends house)
Reinstalling drivers (both from Asus website and from Qualcomm's).
Disable wireless
Empty cache/cookies
Restarting computer/router/modem
Turning off firewall
Searching for virus (didn't find any)
Ipconfig /release /renew
Tested it on different browsers (I also affects games though)
Formatting my laptop
SSL and TSL is enable

I recently upgraded to Windows 8 Pro x64.
My wireless connection is fine, but my LAN isn't. This is a university subscription so there is a proxy server. I asked the school if they have activated my subscription and they said yes. I tried changing cables but it still would not connect. I know the proxy server settings are correct because there is also a wireless connection in school which uses the same settings.
I ran network diagnostics and it said that the connection between the cable and the internet is not working. When I open Chrome, it says that the DNS lookup failed. I tried resetting my TCP/IP, setting my preferred DNS address to 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222 but it still would not work.
I check my ethernet driver settings in Device Manager and it is fine and updated to the latest version.
