Maintenance :: Recovering Lost Hard Drive Due To Deleted Partition
Jan 25, 2014
I have a server with Windows 8 on a 360gb sata drive with 4 1.5TB drives as storage, which i had joined under Windows 8 to be seen as one drive. The system had been sluggish lately so was going to replace the 360gb with a ssd which i had used b4 on my laptop, so when i had it connected and started to install.
I seen 5.8 drive and ssd 12ogb drive and a few small partitions i deleted main partition on ssd and few other small partition which i thought was on the SSD but one was related to the storage drives and they are all screwed up now and when i connect the original Windows 8 os hard drive it doesn't boot anymore.
My question is whats the best way to proceed to save all the data on the hard drives nothing was formatted on theses drives.

I'm trying to recover lost partition and files from external USB hard drive (Maxtor Portable 250GB). I'm using disk Internals sofitware and the software finds the files, but when I try to save them on the drive, each time I get a watchdog, or another BOSD error.
Here are the dumps.SF_31-05-2014.zip

Misread the drive label and deleted the partition on an USB external 80GB SATA drive. Nothing else has been done to the drive.
I did this when using Macrium Reflect Rescue disc.
I know I've seen mention of a program that can recover the partition table but I've not found it yet.
I tried EASUS Data Recovery Wizard but that didn't do it. I thought maybe Paragon had something but I've not had any luck so far.

Recently i purchased HP Pavilion 14-b030tu Sleekbook off eBay where the guy told me that the computer was always stuck in automatic repair.
So i ran HP diagnostics on the drive and it came back with the "Short DST failed", i know that when the short dst failed tests means that the hdd is about to die. Currently i have removed the hdd and have connected it to my computer where it still gets recognized as a hard drive.
Because i dont want to spend money buying a USB with the HP recovery image on it:
1) Any way to recover data off a GPT hard drive? Ive tried Active@ File Recovery but it doesn't allow me to do anything except super scan the drive.
2) Where the recovery image is stored in harddrives from HP ultrabooks that run Windows 8?

I am new to Windows 8, and first time with a laptop. I have 1tb hard drive (minus a few gb) in c drive. d drive is being used as recovery
This is how it was setup. What I would like to do is to partition the amount of space i have from c drive into another drive.
Can manage to partition some hard drive space over to another driver letter, if i do a fresh install of windows, will this new drive be formatted too?
(Just asking this because when I owned a desktop computer, I had two drives. A c-drive and a d-drive. When I re-installed windows 7 on the desktop, all my files were still available on the d-drive, hence asking the above last question).

I need to delete a recovery partition off my second hard drive. I've seen this link: Delete and Remove to Unlock EISA Hidden Recovery or Diagnostic Partition in Vista - My Digital Life but it's for Vista and the final command "delete partition override" doesn't work in diskpart. It comes up saying "The specified command or parameters are not supported on this system"
Yes, I really do want to delete the recovery partition because it's on my secondary HDD, I still have the recovery partition on my C: so I'm really not losing anything ....

I have a USB hard drive which has two partitions:
1 x 100GB partition formatted as FAT32
1 x 900GB partition formatted as NTFS
(these sizes aren't perfectly correct, but it's a 1TB drive that's split in 1:9 proportions)
On my Windows 7 laptop, both partitions are visible in My Computer, and I can read/write with no problems. (On the same laptop, an Ubuntu install can also see and use them perfectly)
On my new Windows 8 laptop, the 100GB FAT32 patition appears under My Computer normally, but the 900GB NTFS partition does not. If I go to Computer -> Manage -> Disk Management, I can see the partition. It has no drive letter or file system listed, reports as "healthy, primary partition" and shows 100% free space. If I right click on the drive's entry in the list, my only options are "delete partition"; everything else is greyed out.
So, to summarise: One hard drive with two partitions. Both partitions work perfectly in Win 7 and Ubuntu. Win 8 can only see the FAT32 partition, and treats the NTFS partition as if it is junk.
way to persuade Windows 8 to mount this partition? I know that the drive and partition are fine, but for some reason Windows 8 isn't interested.

Here's my situation. My computer is running Windows 8.1 There is only 1 physical HD, but it has many partitions. Here is a picture of my current HD setup
The problem is that the WRE partition is literally sitting between my C and D drives, so when I shrink the C drive partition, I cannot extend the D drive with the unallocated space because it is not sitting right next to the D drive (I'm trying to shrink the C from 370 to ~60 GB, then extend the D from 550 to 850 GB with the C drive's unallocated space).
However, I found something called "AOMEI partition manager", which will let me shrink the C drive, extend the WRE partition with the unallocated space, and then shrink the WRE partition to get the unallocated space next to the D drive so I can extend it. So I'm basically using the WRE partition as a middleman between the C and D drives.
I'll still have the WRE partition (after extending and reshrinking it), my system partitions, recovery partition and everything like that. I just don't know if resizing the WRE partition like that will make it nonfunctional or something, even though all the data will still be on it.
FYI I have already created a full hard disk image with Acronis of the current hard drive setup before trying anything. I also have a USB drive that is bootable with a Windows 8.1 ISO that I was initially going to use to just completely format the hard drive and use Acronis as my recovery program instead of Windows recovery partitions, but I'm too worried about the EFI boot partition and all that stuff and possibly making my computer unbootable.

So, my problem started earlier this week when I tried to scan my Hard Drive using my antivirus system. Never do that.
My Vaoi laptop froze at 27% during the scan, and I had to manually shut it off (hold down the power button) and then restart it. Well, it started the scan again, and got stuck again, so I had to restart it again. The next time, I was able to read this millisecond long message about how to "cancel dskchk by pressing any key", so I did, but then it just took forever to load and opened on an error message saying that windows couldn't load, or something along those lines.
Eventually, after figuring out how to open safe mode, I tried to use a Restore point (which didn't work), Refresh the System (which couldn't complete), do a lot of maintenance scans (none of which worked), consult the internet off of my friend's computer (where I heard about the windows.old folder), and then I was finally forced to use the Vaio Recovery Tool and do an emergency backup onto my new External Hard Drive... It semi-worked, but a lot of my files weren't passed over to the external drive, and I'd like to get them back.
The files I care about are mostly image and document files (jpg, bmp, Word, and Notepad) and the folders they were in were all on my Desktop, but I don't know how to get them back. Some are there, some aren't, it's all just really confusing. So, now, I'm currently running three different Data Recovery programs (Wondershare, EaseUS, and Recuva - all free versions), but I'm basically wondering if there's anything else I can do to fix this. I don't have a windows.old folder on my C drive, but I do on my external hard drive, but it's half empty, like the rest of my folders..

I"ve installed windows 8.1 from fresh on a seperate parition on my macbook pro retina 2013 via Apple's bootcamp.
I allocated 40GB which when formatted is 37GB
But now I'm downloading Call of duty on steam which is 14GB however on my hard drive apparently I've only got 5GB left..
Is there a way to free up space or to see what on earth is taking up soo much space..
Ideally I want to buy Battlefield 4 on origin soon but that needs 30 GB space, obviously I'll delete the call of duty game but how can I get all my space back.

My 60 GB C: drive ran out of room. The only thing installed on it is Windows 8 and whatever pre-installed programs came with my computer. I ran WinDirStat (WinDirStat - Windows Directory Statistics), a directory statistic tool and found two very large folders: C:/Windows is 22.2 GB and C:/ProgramData/Microsoft is 17.2 GB. This doesn't seem right. Can I free up room in these or are they both necessary? I read that windows 8 should take up around 20 GB, not 40 so how might I got about freeing up some space?
Also, I updated from Windows 7 about two months ago.

I have two cards, a class 6 and a class 10. The problem is not reproducible on my laptop, which transfers around 8mg/sec.
I've had intermittent problems since upgrading. At first i was getting what i consider a normal transfer rate of 8-10 mg/sec with each card. But several weeks ago I began experiencing rates of UNDER 1 mg/sec. That is KILObytes. It takes an hour to transfer my photographs, which is amazingly not ok.
I have a standard HP set-up, basic computer model, AMD Phenom 8450 Triple-Core 2.1 GHz
I've noticed that when i turn the indexing off, the transfer rate rebounds to normal. But then i have to turn it back on and reboot before either I or a program can locate a file.
Which is also amazingly not ok.
I've tried everything i can think of short of a clean reinstall. Which i REALLY would like to avoid. I've already done that twice since upgrading in November.

I was wondering what you'd recommend for the following:
I want a program that synchronizes my files with my external hard drive.
The client I use right now, Memeo Instant Backup, is decent, but has the following issues:
1. Takes a lot of resources to run
2. Is extremely slow
3. Doesn't mirror deleting files on my hard drive, keeps them on my external and causes it to get full
Is there a program I can use that just literally copies my user folder onto an external drive, and as I delete/move files on my hard drive, its mirrored on the external hard drive?

About 1-2 weeks ago, I had 15GB of space left on my SSD that is solely committed to OS and drivers. Today, I have 2.9GB left. I have downloaded nothing, and I have changed nothing. take a closer look at why my SSD space is disappearing? I've had this OS for 2 months now and it wasn't a problem until recently.
SpaceSniffer Details:
Code: C: [35.2Gb] [ 6.3Gb] hiberfil.sys [ 4.3Gb] pagefile.sys [ 256Mb] swapfile.sys [ 392Kb] bootmgr [ 4Kb] BOOTNXTC:Windows [18.7Gb] [ 2.2Mb] explorer.exe [ 1.9Mb] RtlExUpd.dll [ 864Kb]

8.1 installed on SSD, Easeus backup doesn't see my HDD any more, so I can't make an image of it. It only sees the C drive and my external hard drive, but not the internal HDD (Hitachi 500 GB) that I use as a second drive for storing personal data. I tried with Macrium Reflect, and same problem.

Recently i upgraded my system to windows 8..N after clean install i backed up the copy of my C drive (Includes System Image) to my external 2TB Hard Drive.. It took around 250GB of hard drive space..Now since i am running out of space i decided to delete the back up copy from My hard drive.. I deleted WindowsImageBackup and all associated files using control panel..But around 150GB space is missing(not visible) from my external Hard Drive..
As You can see from attached pic that 125 GB free out of 1.81TB..But size of all files including hidden files is 1.53TB..

I created some windows 8 system images(Using the internal system image tool). Now I find restore points more useful, but I would have to turn the system protection on for an external hard drive. The problem is that I don't understand the sophisticated message Using system protection on a drive that contains system image backups will cause other shadow copies to be deleted faster than normal. Does it mean, that under some circumstances my manually created full system images could be deleted to create a restore point? I would like to keep the system images. Also, I hope it doesn't override existing directories on this harddrive, but I don't want to try it out without being sure.

I just installed Windows 8.1 on my system (from Windows 8) and had to restore to an earlier time (to one from earlier today). The issue is that my solid state hard drive was reduced by about 20 Gigs! I even deleted the other restore points and rebooted, but my hard drive has about 136 gigs of space. Before the restore, it was 156.
Does windows restore really eat up this much hard drive space? Is there a way to get it back?

I have a Toshiba Satellite hybrid, with Windows 8, 4GB RAM and 128 SSD hard drive. I have full Microsoft office and very few other programs, there are the Toshiba installed software which I don't use and the windows 8 based 'apps' which I also hardly use.
My 128GB was about 70% full from week one, but now it is almost 100% full, I regularly carry out disk clean up, but I unable to get more than 1GB free on my hard drive, can this be right? How can I resolve this?

I recently partitioned my Asus ROG G750JW into 2 main parts: One 300GB for a mackintosh, and one 6** (remaining space) for windows 8. That worked fine, until I tried to format what I thought was random partition with a size of 128MBs. I believe this to be the EFI partition, and you know what that does. I cannot boot to windows 8 or mac, and windows boot manager no longer shows up in BIOS. I have a windows 8 reinstall disk and the hackintosh install disk. When trying to refresh from the windows reinstall disk, I get an error saying that the disk is locked. What I need to know is if there is any way to restore this without erasing my hard drive. I do not have access to a windows computer (I can if I have to, but it wouldn't be ideal), but do have access to a mac. I don't have restore points, even if I did they are on the now one-huge partition, which by the way is listed as MBR format.

I bought a new Sony Vaio laptop with Windows 8 pre-installed couple months ago; and all I have done since was installing just the MS Office and the Antivirus softwares. Now for no apparent reasons it shows the hard drive is full and I can not do anything with it. I've tried to create a system recovery with an USB flash drive, but it won't let me do it either.

Long ago when using 7 early on I botched up trying to remove an Acer OEM partition to no avail only to be left missing roughly 65GBs of my hard drive and not being able to see the partition. Luckily I didn't destroy the HD!
I found a nice little free utility that Brink introduced here: Partition - Recover Deleted Partitions in Windows that I ran and it was able to see the partition. Not only that partition, but a bunch of smaller ones. I couldn't believe my eyes when I came to look at this after it was finished scanning!
Below is the results of the scan. The first one listed (no label) is my Windows 8 Pro partition. The one labled 8.1 is obviosly my 8.1 RP that I dual boot. The one with the checkmark with no label I'm guessing is the Acer partition. As you can see Windows Disk Management does not see any other partitions other than 8 and 8.1.
If at all possible, what do I need to do to correct this? I'd like not to touch my 8 partition because of Office, but I will if I need to. 8.1 is just a preview. What are all those smaller ones? What does overlapped mean?
