In the tutorial to install Windows 7 in UEFI, there is not that damn partition recovery, while in the tutorial for Windows 8, we can see it.
When I install Windows 7 (MBR mode), I avoid this partition "recovery" by creating a partition with a name before installation. I install the OS on it and everything is fine, no partition "recovery" But here, since one must delete all partitions, If I create a GPT disk with a partitioning tool before installing, is that it might be appropriate?

Mar 24, 2014After creating a UEFI bootable USB thumb drive with Rufus (using Windows 8.1 Enterprise ISO x64), for a Dell Optiplex 3010 (configured as UEFI only, no CSM, latest firmware version, Windows 8 installed), I didn't see a USB boot option, so I tried to add one manually. Unfortunately I erased the existing boot option (boot manager) by mistake. Although there were two boot options for PXE booting, the machine will not start anymore, even when there is an active WDS server on the network.
I also see Led's 2 and 3 lighting up, meaning according to the manual 'hardware ok but bios possibly damaged/corrupt'.
I understand I cannot start the machine from a bios boot disk because of GPT partitioning, and the UEFI USB boot disk I made might be corrupt (as it didn't show up as a boot option), however I don't understand why it won't boot from the PXE network card, as these boot options are still there.
UEFI Partition Wiped After Windows 7 Installation
Jun 27, 2014I got a (at the time new) MSi laptop several months back with just a regular Windows 8 Core x64 on it and a UEFI boot system (or whatever is the name for "BIOSs"). At some point I had problems with the settings - I couldn't open any of my computer's settings - and I researched long and hard to no avail.
So I installed Windows 7 32-bit (the only disk I had). Now, I'm trying to upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro. I noticed that after the installation of 8.1 Pro my system was still running in 32-bit, so I made a bootable USB stick with the retail version of Windows 8 Core with no key just to get the system back to x64. It worked just fine. I cannot, however, boot in UEFI mode. I believe the partition got wiped somewhere in the Windows 7 installation.
Whenever I enter UEFI by pressing the DEL button (I cannot see the UEFI firmware settings tile under the Troubleshoot option) I see the boot mode is LEGACY and when I change it to UEFI, save and reset, it doesn't boot, giving me a "No media found" error. I don't care about my settings/files as long as I get UEFI back with Windows 8.1 Pro running. My next attempt would be to try and install 8.1 Pro from USB stick, wipe all the partitions and hope the installer will create new ones. The reason this would work when it didn't before is because I had the OS running in x86 not x64 (which UEFI doesn't support). So maybe now that the system is back to x64 the Windows installation will restore the UEFI back to its original state.

Jan 30, 2013I have win 8 pro installed & two HDDs with two partions each , I want to migrate the boot partition to another partition on the second drive .
It would have been easier if i would have just cloned the complete drives but one of the partions on the 2nd drive has data which cannot be deleted .
So I have Drive
1 - Partitions C: ( boot partition ) & D:
Drive 2 - Partitions E: & F:
I want to remove Drive 1 from my PC so i want to copy C: to E: then remove drive 1 & boot from E:
I tried "Easeus todo backup" , did not work, it does not make the copy bootable , to make it bootale the whole drive has to be copied .
I tried making an image of C: using Windows 8 inbuilt backup feature then removed drive 1 , installed Windows 8 on E: then tried restoring the image of C: but i got some error.

Dec 19, 2013I tried to reinstall windows 8.1 and it deleted my files I used it as a back up drive on my windows 7 pc I had 2 drives one with 7 the other 8 it ran fine when i set it up and used it a few times but the last time i was trying to boot it. It crashed so I tried to reinstall windows files but when it booted back up my files was not there i did not format to HD just reinstall windows i have the windows old files but my files are not in them i can run recovery software and see my files but before i do any thing that i can not undo I want to know is there a way to get my files back i have used recovery software in the past and only got back a few files so I am trying bypass that if I can.

Jan 27, 2014I recently decided to buy an ultrabook and I got me this one: LG Z360-7416, with a ssd and windows 8 (x64). As usual, it came with a lot of garbage installed which was using almost half of the ssd storage (128GB), so I decided to do a clean install. I got me a msdnaa copy of the windows 8.1 pro (x64). So, i used a pendrive to boot up on UEFI mode and selected custom install and when i get to the select partition, it shows everything fine, i select a partition and when a click on install, it returns an error saying it cannot install on my partition (i dont remember exactly what it says), and when i click on refresh, all my partitions vanishes, even going into the prompt and using diskpart doesnt show my partitions anymore. I tried to load some drivers, but it didnt work.
I was only able to install windows 7(x64), where nothing of these things happens, it installs realy easy. I tried to install windows 8 from windows 7, like an upgrade, but after it restarts, it gets stuck also. My disk is formatted on GPT, as im using EUFI on my windows 7 installation.
Tried almost a hundred times using all solutions i found online, but always the same result. And to get even more weird, some rare times it gets to the installation part, where it says the progress, but stays on 0% of unpacking files...
Its seens to be missing some especific driver to windows 8 be able to work with my ssd, but i cant get it right, but if it came installed with windows 8, it must be a way to make then work together.
Unfortunately i deleted the recovery partitions, so im stuck on windows 7.

I was having endless problems with Windows 8, such as software compatibility, and formatted the laptop (removing all partitions), and installing Windows 7 over it.
This has worked fine to date, but I now need to switch to Win 8 again.
I know my laptop supports UEFI, and that the Windows 8 installations are no longer probably on the computer. Is there a way to recover the cd key from the UEFI and use this to download the Win 8 installation files again? The CD key was not supplied in the laptop documentation...

Dec 28, 2012I bought a Windows 8 laptop, ASUS Q500A, and reformatted it with Windows 7.
I went into the BIOS and used "Restore Defaults" and now all Boot Option Priorities are deleted.
Each time I boot the laptop, it automatically goes to BIOS (or UEFI).
I tried inserting the Windows 7 disc so I can access Startup Repair or Command Prompt but it freezes before it could get anywhere even when I tried it with an external CD/DVD drive.
I cannot get the laptop to boot to the hard drive or CD drive at all,
how I can reset the boot option priorities so it will be boot to the hard drive again.

Nov 18, 2013Is it possible to install Windows 8.1 as Legacy with MBR? Or only as UEFI with GPT? I'm kind of confused with all this UEFI business, I always used MBR in my Windows installations. Also, Truecrypt does not support UEFI, so if installing Windows 8.1 I should do it as legacy.
Also, how can I control during the install process if I want to set my system installation as UEFI or Legacy?

Jan 14, 2014using the UEFI install instructions from this forum. I do meet all of the requirements (Windows 8 64-bit iso, ASRock Z87 Extreme4 mobo, blank SSD). When I get to Step 7 in the UEFI guide, I only get 2 partitions instead of the 4 shown(Recovery, System, MSR, Primary). I only get System and Primary. I decided to delete all partitions and just run the setup on the unallocated drive...everything worked fine. I am just wondering what the consequences are of not having those 4 partitions. I still have the UEFI interface when I boot up so it appear that is working.

Sep 19, 2013I've made a UEFI Win8PE by WADK , then burn it to a CD. I boot normal and I can see X:WindowsSystem32.
I use EasyBCD to [Add New Entry] to append new boot item to existing Windows 8. The boot menu becomes like this :
Windows 8
Win8PE
But the Win8PE fail to boot with error message like insert Windows disc again ...... in the primary black and white screen.
Should I not to use EasyBCD to [Add New Entry] ? As I do the same thing in BIOs + MBR harddisk that booted perfect. In UEFI + GPT partition , do I better not to use EasyBCD , instead to use BCDEDIT , if so , what's the command line to do this with bcdedit ?

So I was trying to install Hackintosh/Linux when I noticed that the System Reserved partition was on my HDD instead of the SSD. So, I used easybtc to migrate my boot files to my SSD. I deleted the system reserved partition. Now I want to convert my BIOS to UEFI. I have Z87 pro mobo.

But it seems to be geared at the C drive, where I don't have room for that 350mb as disk utility wont let me shrink it.
Edit: would downloading a third party partitioner, shrinking C about 350mb, or whatever is the minimum, and then use that new space as described in the guide work?

I'm wishing to update my system into Windows 8 Pro or Enterprises. But unfortunately my model isn't appears in Acer's Windows 8 Eligible Models list or Affected Models List.
I think my system has more than enough performance to run Windows 8. But my bios don't have UEFI support. So, i just wanna know will my computer be able to run Windows 8 without any troubles without that secure boot option.
I"ve run Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant Tool in my system and it says everything is okay except Secure Boot option. also I'v checked individual hardware vendor sites for the latest drivers for windows 8. Most products has the drivers, And the current drivers also compatible with Windows 8 according to the upgrade assistant.
What should i do so? Will the win 8 upgrade useless in my system? or it will be better than the current win 7?

Jun 30, 2013I have a Lenovo B575 laptop that is not UEFI capable; however, I have downloaded the x64 Win 8.1 ISO, burned it to a bootable DVD and a bootable USB drive and tried installing Windows 8.1 using a boot from DVD and also a boot from USB drive, and neither method has resulted in a successful installation. The root cause of the installation problem is that Windows 8.1 is intent on creating an EFI partition structure on my non-UEFI machine.
So, I end up with a 300MB Recovery Partition and a 100MB EFI Partition which doesn't work well on my machine. Now, during the installation process, I opted to delete all existing partitions and allow the installation to properly partition the hard drive for installation; however, I knew I was in trouble when the machine started hanging during reboots.

I have a laptop with one SSD and two internal disks. Both internal disk were removed before the installation, and connected and formatted after finished the installation.
It can me mentioned that I downloaded the OS, saved it as .iso file, then copied onto the USB disk. Then connected into the laptop and booted from USB/UEFI.

So , now i should format all disc inside my pc (secure erase for ssd disc and wipe for hhd). I can create NTFS partition with GPT format and aligned to 1204MB for all solid state discs and HDD. Because this is not possible with stored OEM Win 8 key I want to boot with a Win 7 BootCD and patch the UEFI with a Win 8 retail serial key.
For that I need a Program like SLIC which accomplish this task.
But where do I get this SLIC tool?
is there another way to enter a new Win 8 key into UEFI from Win 7?

Feb 17, 2013I would like to reinstall Win 8 on my ASRock UEFI motherboard in the UEFI mode. I have Win 7 OEM and the downloaded Win 8 Pro upgrade. I have the Win 8 Pro upgrade burned to an ISO disc. I also have the hard drive backed up to Acronis 2013 and have an Acronis WinPE rescue disc to boot with to restore.
Several questions.
(1) If I convert to UEFI and format the drive to GPT, will Acronis restore to the GPT (from MBR)?
(2) If Acronis won't restore, will converting to UEFI/GPT affect installing or activating the Win 7 OEM and/or the Win 8 Pro upgrade (I assume I'll have to install Win 7 and then upgrade to Win 8).
(3) Will a UEFI system read other hard drives that are MBR formatted?

Originally my laptop came with Windows 7 and when i looked at disk management my disks were formatted with UEFI schema. One of my friend gave me a UEFI bootable USB drive loaded with Windows 8. So, i thought why not give it a try. So, I created a backup of my OEM Windows 7 and saved the iso files in a seperate external HD (created twice just to be sure . Now, i decided to load the Windows 8. Booted into the BIOS and there is an option to select the USB drive along with the UEFI option for that USB drive. I selected the UEFI option but some reason it does not boot into UEFI.
So I decided to select the standard USB install and this option let me install windows 8. In the process of installing i formatted the partitions and made a single partition and installed Windows 8 on it. I am guessing now the drive is not GPT but MBR. I also noticed that his installation USB disk had an option to select either 32bit or 64bit of Windows 8... Would Microsoft create a same iso file with both versions? I am guessing he created the USB from a illegitimate source.
I am planning on purchasing Windows 8 Pro version as an iso but wanted to be confident that it would work with UEFI architecture.
Questions:
1. Why would the system NOT boot from UEFI?
2. If I download the legitimate iso from Microsoft and wanted to install Window8 Pro via UEFI, I am sure i would have to format my SSD to GPT and how would i go about formatting it during installation?
3. How would i create a recoverable USB for my iso image i created for Windows 7 via ASUS AI Recovery. Do I need to follow the same procedure as stated in creating bootable USB disk (i.e. FAT32 system) via diskpart utility?

Dec 4, 2012Have any of you successfully installed Windows 8 with UEFI on a RevoDrive X2 (PCI-E express card)?
It starts the installation just fine for the RevoDrive X2 after loading it's drivers, but on first restart it...:
No boot drive found.Manually select to boot from the RevoDrive from the boot menu (F11), and it just restarts the installation again from scratch.
It installs and runs just fine with legacy BIOS (MBR) for the RevoDrive X2.
It also installs and runs just fine with UEFI on an internal SATA2 HDD.
Things I've done:
Bootable Windows 8 USB formatted as FAT32 w/EFI folder in itEnabled wake on PCI-E/PCM in UEFIBooting from USB from boot menu (F11) and not set to always boot from USB.

Jul 27, 2013I have just recently bought a new computer. If I knew I was going to have this issue I probably wouldn't have bought a 4TB HDD but anyway.
What I have done is read the article (this is where I found out I couldn't install to the 4TB HDD in the first place) on how to install Windows in UEFI format. I have created a USB flash to do this but still my HDD partion is only showing up at 1.6TB. It is setup as a GPT file format as it gave me all the prompts and created the Recovery, system partitions etc. How do I get this to work so when I do the install it shows up in the first place as the 4TB partition or at the end of it all is still not possible?
What I will be doing is installing Windows on this 4TB patition and then using a 256GB SSD in SSD Caching.
Am I better off getting a 1-2TB drive and installing normally instead of wasting my time or can this be done?

Jan 29, 2014Right before I performed a clean install of Windows 8.1 x64 on my Inspiron 3520, I switched to the Legacy BIOS *facepalm*.
When I enter the legacy BIOS and enabled "secure boot", I performed a restart that gave the following message "internal hard disk drive not found, to resolve this issue, try to reseat the drive. No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 enter setup menu, F5 enter PSA". Of course, when I go back into the BIOS and disable secure boot, it reverts back to legacy and boots up Windows 8 just fine. What I'd like to know is, how can I revert back to UEFI so I can change the boot-up option and perform a clean install under UEFI.

Nov 17, 2013I just install windows 8 using BIOS , but now i want to change it to UEFI boot. so i followed steps below
1.create and format a new FAT32 partition K:
2.my windows8 is in I: so , i use this command bcdboot i:windows /f all /s k: and succeeded.
3.i checked with the bootice about the BCD in my K: and found it indeed point to i:windows just like the picture below [URL]
4. and i restart, choose uefi boot in BIOS configuration and it showed like this: [URL]
5. i checked my k:/windows/system32/ , there is a winload.efi file... [URL]
The most strange thing is that i've copyed my winload.efi to other computer which is already in UEFI mode , and also i've copyed it in my virtual machine, it works fine! So my winload.efi should be OK.

Jul 6, 2013I've downloaded a legal iso from MAPS, i ve slisptremed all latest updates into it with Windows download integrator (it uses dism afaik) , then the problems comes in - i cannot use USB as my install.wim is 4,8 GB. I ve burned a Dual layer DVD with Windows 8 stock recorder and the PC doesnt see the DVD drive as bootable. When using stock it boots uefi from pendrive without any problems. How to make this updated iso boot into UEFI mode ?
