Maintenance :: Is It Normal For Windows 8.1 To Be Altering Services
Aug 10, 2014
The other day I was looking into the services of my computer cause typically certain services run at certain types and I'm used to it being like that, however I noticed a service that usually ran wasn't running.
Checked in the services list. The Background Intelligent Transfer Service was set to Manual... check online and apparently the default is Automatic (Delayed Start). So hmm... set it back to default of Automatic (Delayed Start), wondering why it was like that way.
Look through the Event Logs. A few entries of BITS constantly being switched to auto start and demand start interchangably by SYSTEM. Going back to the 10th of July.
This morning after I had set it to this, Windows Update service isn't stopping itself after a period of time after boot like it usually does. I'm... confused by this. Why is it still running? Check Services. Apparently this entire time it had been set to... Automatic (Trigger Start). I'm... surprised by this, confused and not understanding. Look up the default, set it back to its default of Manual (Trigger Start). Hopefully that fixes that.
But it's kinda weird and odd that my computer was like this. I guess some services didn't get altered properly from the shift from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1? Cause I upgraded via the store. By the way I'm running the Pro version.
I've been getting this single warning since the very first boot after a clean install of Windows 8 Pro. This is the only warning I get along with 19 informationals that are easy to understand and logical.

I read a former post about this - it referenced a older post about indexing and saw this at the bottom in the form of an update : Run > services.msc > find Windows Search > right click to select properties >
When I looked at WINDOWES SEARCH here is says STOPPING and when I clicked on properties the area that appears to be where you can change this is grayed out (STAT STOPE PAUSE RESUME) cannot be clicked ...
It is also not working from the blue screen where I can click on Apps/Files/Settings - (Do not know the name of these new screens or locations) ...
How to change windows defender to manual in services? I've tried altering the permissions but for some reason it doesn't work. I even tried from the recovery console, which worked, but on rebooting the registry entry changed back to auto.
I've been having a network problem since Refreshing Windows 8.1 Pro Update 64 bit on one of my PC's. I've been able to see other PC's OK but unable to see some devices (eg Diskstation NAS etc) on my network (all connected using Ethernet cables).
I've tried all sorts of things to cure the problem and all to no avail.
I just noticed that in Services there was no Computer Browser so I guess this is my problem. I copied over the browser.dll file from another PC (using the same operating system) to the Windows/System32 folder but after a reboot there was still no Computer Browser in Services. I ran a couple of scripts I found, a registry hack and something else to restore the Computer Browser then I uninstalled the Client for Microsoft Networks, rebooted and re-installed the client.
Now when I look in Services it's listed as Browser instead of Computer Browser and in the Description column it says "Failed to read description. Error Code: 15100. The error code has now changed to error code 2.
What I can try next other than a clean re-install?
No Apps can find my Location. (their not finding an incorrect location, but not finding ANY location info). I have Windows Location Platform enabled in Control Panel. I have Let Apps Use My Location turned on in User Settings. All apps have Location turned on..but. NONE OF THEM can find location.
One App will give me this error "Location Service Error: Either using the current location is blocked, or network is down".
Is it possible I inadvertently disabled an essential startup program or service?
some public wi-fi services require a sign on (even if free) -- for example in the UK in most Weatherspoon's pubs there is a free wi-fi service -- _the cloud_ I think it's called (the underscores are part of the name). You register once and then it works in almost every Weatherspoon's pub I've ever been in - if you can log on.
(Weatherspoon's pubs while not the best do have on the whole the CHEAPEST beer in the UK and some actually have some good Guest Ales --rare for a Corporate type of chain whatever people think about that particular organisation -- probably learned more POLISH in one of those places than even on a trip to Poland !!!).
Now - especially on phones sometimes the logon message disappears quickly so you can't get connected to the wi-fi even though the phone says "Connected". -- The same happens on a laptop.
Is there anyway to get the logon screen back again without re-booting or disconnecting from that wi-fi service or re-booting a phone. This only seems to happen on PC's with IE10 and above. (Happens on W7 and Windows 8 laptops) and phones where the logon notification can disappear so fast you miss it.
With the following problem regarding media streaming in windows 8. Up until recently I could stream video films from my HP laptop & HP desktop onto the TV via DNLA.
After following several posts on various sites it seems that when I try to start the windows media player network in the services I get the error message "windows could not start the windows media player network sharing service on the local computer.
Error 1068. The dependency group failed to start."
In the dependencies tab in the lower box of the two "the following system components depend on this service"
The box is greyed out and the words no dependencies is displayed.
when i make a search for directories, then i double click on the wanted directory; now i would like to navigate as normal, instead explorer keeps in the path box "search-display.." not allowing me to navigate or to expand directory tree, how can i instruct it to exit search mode and continue from that path?
it's getting boot and install only in EFI mode. after trying to reinstall it won't allow me to select the disk partition, as it gave me the error "
Windows 8 cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks." i tried all the given solutions on GOogle. even i cannot recover or refresh using windows 8 environment. many times it gives me BSOD. cannot vonvert to MBR as it says it cannot be done on virtual HDD.
tried many things nothing works, need to install windows 8 after every 1 or 2weeks, many a times my BCD data gets corrupt, and windows wont start. Also tried many things to repair this, but only thing that works is reinstalling windows 8. That gpt or MBR error was solved by selecting UEFI:CD drive. in boot options by pressing F12 after inserting the disk.

I recently installed windows 8 on my dell laptop. The brightness is automatically set to higher than my normal settings whenever the PC boots up. It starts from the Blue Window 8 logo screen to the Select Your Operating System screen. I'm dual-booting windows 7 and 8. When it reaches the Enter your user password screen, it goes back to back to normal settings. (I always set Brightness to lowest possible). So basically this always happens when the PC boots up, But it auto-adjusts itself to my settings after I enter my password).
I installed the Ambient Light Sensor drivers for my laptop to fix the Device Manager yellow exclamation marks. But I disabled the Ambient Light Sensor service in Services.msc, but that didn't fix it ... Adaptive Brightness is also disabled..
My Windows 8.1 crashes randomly (almost everyday), without BSOD or Black Screen, and restarts as normal. There are no minidump files created. Vaio fit 13

I keep getting this message every time I log into my windows. There are no problems starting and no problems shutting down. So why do I keep getting this awful message every time I start up?
I recently install Left 4 Dead on my laptop and it changes my font to bold, not only in the game but all in my system, my default font is now bold.
I uninstall the game but the font was not changed. I went to Font Settings on Control Panel and make it to default, it now go backs to normal but not for all programs.
For instance, my Firefox's font was still bold, changing to default also I can't. So how do I turn all fonts back to normal? Look at image and see how my Google looks like, it's bold I want all back to normal. I think the font is Arial Bold.
I recently got my new computer and I'm a fresh user of Windows 8. I'm happy and all I was just wondering if the system interrupts process is a normal process, should it be there at all ? It does no harm so far (I think), I just wasn't sure after reading up on it if the complaints were only because the process was usually a high %, or if the process itself is bad.
Ok, so I made a local account, because I don't give a rat's about all that Sync stuff. I found out how (from these forums) to make it automatically log you into an account. However it keeps trying to log into an "Other Account", I don't have another account, that's just what it says. Then it of course says incorrect Username or Password, because there isn't one, so I have to click sign into a different account, and then click my normal account, defeating the whole purpose of having it automatically sign in,
I recently bought a new laptop with Windows 8. I slowly got to grips with it, but then it offered to update to 8.1, so I let it. A few minor changes that I could see, but no issues, and I have been using it for some days. It was fine when I turned it off yesterday. This morning, I turned it on (normal screen), went to look at my emails and the magnification was HUGE. Nothing I tried altered it, except to move from from huge to enormous and back. So, I went to some other chat rooms and they were the same - huge, so I have to keep using page up, page down, and struggling to find the scroll bar at the bottom to go from side to side to read a line of text. I am typing this on my old desktop.
long time ago I downloaded Windows 8 Enterprise x64 from MSDN and activated via microsoft, and now I got RTM and GA from other sources (what I mean it's that I did not download directly from MSDN). Now that I have some time I make some tests.
The activated machine has never get internet connection, results:
Enterprise 8 and RTM iso:
-I use the Setup.exe with graphical options.
- That iso don't allow me inplace update, only install with keep data, keep data and aps and keep nothing. Using keep data and apps, I got 8.1 deactivated.
Enterprise and GA iso:
-I use elevated cmd ---> setup.exe /auto:upgrade (seem this option is the same as install and keep data & apps)
-Using graphical interface of setup.exe is the same as before, no inplace update. Using keep data and apps, I got 8.1 deactivated.
-My account password did not work, as it install english keyboard layout and set it to default (mine is Spanish)
-A new pop-up appear after install in the upper right corner telling me how to use the charm bar (something that did not appear on RTM)
Is this normal? Or should I think I download a bullshit with same SHA1 as MSDN? Why I can't make inplace update with an activated Enterprise machine and GA iso? and moreover, Why are this iso's so different?
Then how to make inplace update to Enterprise edition without internet connection?
DVD drive is powered off, Lenovo X230, Windows 8.1 64 bit and found that in the safe mode (minimal), the problem does not exist. For trouble I decided to try other options of safe boot to have further information. After restarting in safe mode "Active directory repair"', I can not turn back to Normal Startup. I see only pure blue screen with only one button with restart and shut down, there no any key on the keyboard who work, left click not working too. And I can not access to msconfig and startup manager to change this setting.
But I have a bootable disk and I can edit registry but I do not know what do I have to do to get back Normal startup.
Before I start can you tell me if I need to be logged in to the account that has suffered the problem or can I do it from my (admin) account on the same computer? The unexpected_kernel_mode_trap problem has (so far) only occurred on my son's user account.
I have a 600Kbits per sc connection, cable modem so my downloading speed is around 60-70 kbytes/s same in utorrent and in browser downloads, i use windows 8.1 pro, 64 bits, recently my google chrome was turning slow and firefox too, i dunno if my pc was infected by viruses. i scanned wit havast and bitdefender free versions and found nothing.and yesterday when i tried to download a pdf file, i dunno why nut download speed was horrible, started with 24 and then it was like 3-4 kbytes/s and it even failed later.
I thought it was a connection problem so i restarted my connection, browsing was fine everything except downloading seemed okay.
I tried doing the same things with different browsers like firefox or internet explorer but the problem was same.
When i tried utorrent, it was perfectly normal, it gave the usual download speed of 60-70 kbytes/s so it seems the problem was onl in downloading with browsers and no problem with browsing and utorrent. I hard resetted my pc and reinstalled fresh copy of win 8.1 but again twas the same.did it 3 times already but no change. I dunno if it is a virus or something but i am exhausted, ( before formatting my pc , i backed up my files in an external hdd so it may be possible that if there is a virus involved then it may have came back due to my external hdd)
I checked Speedtest.net by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test and there too, showed 0.56 mbps , so it was normal there too
I got my scrolling wheel inverted due to powershell command i tried to check how it feels in the inverted way. but now i'm not feeling good and i want to go back to my normal scrolling. if i scroll down it should go down and up for up vice versa.
I have strange network problem these days. I have a desktop PC and installed Windows 8.1. And I have a LAN. The gateway IP address is 192.168.2.1.
The network works fine when I start the PC. I can access Internet with IE, I can access the config pages of my gateway and I can SSH my local File server. It's a synology ds212j. I assigned static IP address 192.168.2.18 to it and name it as "home_ds". I add dns entry in file "hosts".
But there will be very strange problems if the PC keeps running about 2/3 days. It seems I can't connect to other computers from my PC. No IE, no SSH, no ftp.... But ping still work. These is no network device listed in my network folder. But I still can access the mapped network drives.
For example, I can ping www.google.com, I can ping 192.168.2.1 and 192.168.2.18 and "home_ds". K:> ping 192.168.2.1Pinging 192.168.2.1 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 192.168.2.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64 Reply from 192.168.2.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64 Reply from 192.168.2.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64 Reply from 192.168.2.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64 Ping statistics for 192.168.2.1: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 13ms, Maximum = 61ms, Average = 32ms
But when I try to telnet and ssh, all failed.
I tried: telnet www.google.com 80 telnet 192.168.2.1 80 telnet 192.168.2.18 22 all failed.
I tied putty, msn, outlook,... all failed. But my wife's PC works normally at the same time.
In the network folder, there should be a list of all my network devices, including my wife's PC and my File server. But it's empty if this problem happens. However I can add them mannually and I can access the network drives.
And I can connect to my PC from my wife's PC with remote desktop.
If I logout and login again, the network will recover except 1 new problem. That is I can't access the network drives of my File Server with computer name "home_ds", but IP address works. And I can ping it with computer name.
K:>ping home_ds Pinging home_ds [192.168.2.18] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 192.168.2.18: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64 Reply from 192.168.2.18: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64 Reply from 192.168.2.18: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64 Reply from 192.168.2.18: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64 Ping statistics for 192.168.2.18: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 11ms, Maximum = 30ms, Average = 19ms
A restart will solve both the above 2 problems. But I don't want to restart my PC so frequently.
I tried to solve this problem by update windows and drivers but failed.
My screen seems to have a grey filter overlaying it. See attached.
When i booted it in safe mode, the screen is showing the right vibrant colors. When i booted it back to normal mode, the screen is greyish but strangely the mouse is showing the correct white color.
I have googled across numerous website but none of them bring me closer to the issue. I have read the thread, Personalize Suddenly Greyed Out but this is not what i encountered. The options or buttons or selections did not grey out, it affects the screen only.
I cannot afford a system restore because i shared this laptop with my gf.
Is it normal for Windows 8.1 to show "Applying Updates" after a BSOD crash? I saw this happen on my desktop earlier this week and now on my laptop. I checked the update log and there was no update applied immediately after the crash.
I noticed that automatic maintenance in Win 8 cannot be disabled. I maintain my pc regularly and do not need it. Is there a way to do it or should I let it run?
