Integrating Drivers Into Startup Recovery

Jan 14, 2013

Is there any way to integrate additional drivers into the startup recovery for Windows 8? What I mean by this is the screen it goes into if it fails to boot more than once.

Currently I need to manually load the raid driver in order for it to see my Windows 8 install by opening a command prompt and using drvload to load it into memory.

How To Clean Mount Image After Integrating Updates And Drivers To Keep Size Below 4.7 GB

How do I clean mounted image after integrating updates and drivers? When I give the final command of commit, the resulting image is 4.8 GB.

I found this command

dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

This command also removes un-needed installed updates. But it is for cleaning the installed OS on C: and not for Mounted image using DISM.

Hardware Drivers :: USB Mouse Sometimes Not Recognized At Startup

Nov 20, 2013

Over the past three weeks or so, there have been probably seven times my wireless USB Nexus Silent Mouse has not been recognized on cold computer startups (usually morning). Windows 8 (Pro x64) throws up a message that a USB device wasn't recognized, and I don't see a mouse cursor. Unplugging and replugging the USB mouse's stick, which is in a port on the front of the computer, solves it. The mouse driver is up to date, changing USB ports hasn't made a difference and the batteries are fine (and have been changed).

Hardware Drivers :: Why Can't Use Keyboard In Advanced Startup

Aug 26, 2013

I have a Microsoft Sidewinder X4 USB keyboard. When I restart Windows 8 using Advanced Startup Mode I get the familiar menu where you have to enter F1-F9 to select an option (or F10 for more options). My keyboard doesn't work, however. I tried pressing all of the F-keys but none of them are recognized.

I am pretty sure it's not a BIOS issue because whenever I do a cold boot I can get into the BIOS by pressing the DEL key so I know the keyboard is recognized by my system. why I can't use my keyboard in Windows 8 Advanced Startup?

Hardware Drivers :: How To Merge Primary Partitions With Recovery Partition

Jan 26, 2014

I just bought a new laptop - an ASUS N550JV - with a single 1TB hard drive. I specifically sought a 1TB hard drive because I intend to store a lot of photos on the laptop and already have over 600GB of photo data to store.

When I got the laptop the first thing I did was to go through the windows update process to get everything up to date, then I upgraded to Windows 8.1 (the laptop came with Windows 8), then I ran the windows update again until everything was up to date.

It was only then that I opened up file explorer with the intention of setting up a basic folder structure for the files I planned to transfer to the laptop. I was dissapointed, at that point, to discover that instead of a single 1TB C: drive, I saw a 370+ GB C: drive and a 530GB + D drive. I confirmed with system information that there is indead just a single drive, and that it thus came partitioned into 2 primary volumes (which, btw, still don't add up to 1TB BTW!). This setup really doesn't work for me, because the "larger" volume is still too small for all my photos, and it would be illogical and inconvenient to have to split up the photos so that some were on the C drive and some on the D drive.

Could I somehow merge the two partitions back into one primary drive, or at least re-size them so that the D drive had at least, say, 750GB, and shrink the C drive accordingly. He pointed me to the Disk Management utility and directed me to delete the (still empty) D drive, which would make that storage space unallocated, then extend the C drive to use that unalocated space. I was able to delete the D drive, and confirmed that there was now 530+ GB of unallocated space. However, when I click on the C drive the option to extend is greyed out.

I did a bit of Googling at this point and discovered that you can can only extend to contiguous unallocated space, and the unallocated space was NOT contiguous - there is a 350MB "Recovery Partition" between the C and D (or unallocated) spaces. In fact, there were multiple recovery and other partitions. (From left to right: 100MB "EFI System Partition", 900MB "Recovery Partition", 370+GB "Primary" C Drive with Boot etc, 350MB "Recovery Partition", 530+GB "Primary" D drive, and 20+GB "Recovery Partition").

Of course I would be too scared to delete the recovery partition, but there's no option to do so anyway ...

I asked the family member again and he suggested creating a USB Recovery Drive and, in the process, wipe the recovery partition. So used the windows utility to create a recovery drive, and sure enough, at the end it asked if I wanted to delete the recovery partition and I said yes. The good news is that this removed the 20GB partition, and I was able to extend the D drive to use that newly unallocated space. The bad news is that the 350MB recovery partition still lies between the C and D drives, preventing me from merging the two.

Again through Googling I found that there are tools I could use to force delete the recovery partition, but I'm afraid to do so and kill my computer or recovery options all together. I also heard that this 350MB recovery partition was created when I upgraded to 8.1, and that rolling back to my factory setting won't remove the partition?

So the question is, what can I do? Is there an easy way to "move" the recovery partition to the end of the drive without breaking any functionality that it might have? What would happen to my computer if this recovery partition were to "break" or get removed? Is it best that I just "live with it" the way it is despite the inconvenience?

Setup Installation :: Replace Recovery Partition In Recovery Drive?

If you have a recovery drive - that includes the recovery partition - made on one computer, but have a toshiba laptop with a bad drive (but the recovery partition is ok), can you replace/copy the partition on the recovery drive with the recovery partition from the bad laptop HD?

My friend's laptop would not boot, and would not factory recover, reset, or refresh. I tried to clone the hard drive before I started messing with the disc. It would not clone, but I was able to copy the recovery partition to a USB drive.

He never make recovery discs, so could not re-install, but I can borrow the recovery drive that my aunt made for her laptop.

Dell :: Backup And Recovery Unable To Create Recovery DVD

Feb 18, 2013

I am trying to create recovery discs from "Dell backup and Recovery application" however when i was asked to insert the second DVD,the optical drive keeps rejecting the DVD. The application will not continue to burn the second DVD and appears to be frozen. I tried with different brands/makers of DVD and also -/+ R. Unfortunately .Issue remains. I was able to find this article   593906  Published on 2013-01-21  ( relative link [URL]...   ).

Although i have done the updates ,i am still not able to create recovery discs !!   Current Issue:  after inserting the  3rd Disc application gives the following message "Dbr.exe -No disc found" and stays there and rejects the DVD.  I spoke with Dell's Greek Support team. I was told that warranty does not cover sw support even if my unit is less than a week old. Furthermore i was informed that although "Dell backup and recovery" application says DELL is not actually a Dell product thus they can't support it. They suggested my to use windows 7 file recovery instead (which needs at least 8 DVDs !).

What Does NA In StartUp Mean

Sep 15, 2014

On clicking Search Online, it takes me to Bing searching for "NA" word

how can I know what it is & how to get rid of it is its not useful?

Its been there from my previous HDD itself, Now I have replaced with SSD & still NA has not gone,

It was enabled, so I disabled it - no change in anything I can see in performance.

N.B: I had looked up in Stat up programs now because while booting up , takes me to Login password screen quickly, but from there to reach Windows Start screen/Desktop it takes about 30-40seconds (after keying in PW it takes about 10-20seconds to show up Spinning circle of Welcome screen)

Though after SSD upgrade its comparatively better , but this delay is there since I did August updates - Had uninstalled them, still delay there. (I don't know when exactly 'NA' appeared in startup )

So for now , to avoid putting in Login password & waiting for system to respond , I disabled password login - now it is Auto-login.

Could Not Access Advanced Startup

Aug 10, 2013

I've had two computers in the last few weeks where i was unable to get to the Advanced Startup functions through Settings>Change PC Settings. On one machine, clicking Change PC Settings just kept giving a blank white screen. The other PC simply would not boot. (On one of those PC's I wanted to get to Safe Mode, on the other I was looking to Refresh or Reset the OS.)

I fixed both of them by restoring to factory original settings using the manufacturer's built in function, which was ok since there was not much configuration that had been done by the user.

But I am wondering if Microsoft has built in any other ways to access Safe Mode or Refresh/Reset when the usual method does not work. Can these be accessed through the recovery boot disk? If so, are there any tutorials on this?

See Lockscreen Notifications At Startup?

Nov 3, 2012

If you want to see email notifications on the lockscreen before you log in it's pretty easy.

Carry out the instructions to auto log in on startup

Log On User Account Automatically at Windows 8 Startup

then have a batch file in the start-up folder to lock the pc

Rundll32.exe User32.dll,LockWorkStation

when the pc starts up it auto logs on with your live account, I get about 10 seconds of start screen before the batch file runs then it locks and I have email and whatever other notifications are active sat on the lock screen. You also have the benefit of any background apps starting up before you log in, speedfan, lcdsmartie things like that.

Unable To Set A Startup Program

Mar 31, 2014

I'm using Windows 8.1 x64, and I'm unable to set a task or program at windows startup. I've tried everything:

A. Task Scheduler

B. Shortcut to "Programs/startup"

C. Set the program itself in its options (this method works with some programs, but not everyone, and of course, not every program has an option to start whith Windows)

D. Run as administrator, propieties and give permissions, privileges... etc

Nothing happens. I've checked in the Task Manager tab STARTUP for the programs I set up, and they are all there, in that list. But they never run. What can I do?

In Windows XP it was as easy as add a simple shorcut to the "Progams/Startup" folder. Now it seems to be impossible.

Black Screen On Startup

Jan 20, 2014

I installed Windows 8 over the weekend. I didn't want to but my parents have it and they keep harassing me to "fix" their computer so that it acts like Windows Vista, so I needed to know more about Windows 8. When Windows 8 was installed I updated to 8.1 and installed Office 2010. Office asked for a reboot so I rebooted and haven't been able to get into Windows since.

The computer boots to a black screen that flickers once in a while. I can see my mouse pointer on the screen when I move the mouse. I'm having trouble accessing Safe Mode. I did get a diagnostic tool to come up before Windows booted and I ran a full diagnostics on my computer. When the diagnostics were completed it dumped me into the boot options menu. I tried to let Windows refresh itself which did not work. I also did a System Restore which did not work.

I have unplugged all usb and serial cables from the computer to make sure that it wasn't an external hard drive or printer causing my problem.

I downloaded Windows 8 so I don't have a CD to boot from. My computer doesn't have a CD drive. My plan is to keep trying to boot into Safe Mode but once I am back in I don't know what I am going to do. I already did a system restore. I could try to uninstall Office but it is more likely that the 8.1 update is my biggest problem. I'm sure that there is a way to undo the 8.1 update.

I was just wondering if there is any new information out there. It would be nice if Microsoft had a fix for this problem but I can't find it on their website.
