How Will Windows 8.1 Update 1 Be Deployed

Mar 3, 2014

Will it be like it was the case from Windows 8 > 8.1 where it was actually a whole new installation and the old Windows 8 was put in a Windows.OLD folder or will it be a simple update via Windows Update where the user loses nothing?

Windows 8 Pro Install Cannot Update

Jun 1, 2014

I purchased a Windows 8 Pro licence through a classified advert on another forum in Sept 2013 and now since Windows XP is no longer supported I decided to update my OS. I thought I got a good deal on the licence and when I went to try download an official Windows 8 file I couldn't. I contacted Microsoft who informed me my licence is a valid Windows 8 Pro VL licence. They were unable to provide me with a physical ISO to download from and told me to ask the person I purchased it from... who of course has since disappeared.

So I downloaded the Windows 8 Pro x64 ISO from MSDN, installed great, product activated perfectly, my old pc is running and booting fast and I actually like it. However when I try to update the scroll bar just constantly scrolls left to right and the progress bar shown at 0%.

I have googled, and deleted the folder called the DOWNLOAD folder in SoftwareDistribution following advice online, however this still does not fix the problem. Occassionally I have got the files to download after the 0% progress says different, and when it comes to install these update files, nothing happens.

Is it because I downloaded a dodgy OS version from MSDN? it is the 915417.iso that I used.

Also can I update to Windows 8.1? When I installed the first few times I tried to update through the Windows Store. it said I require updates. Some files might have updated, I did a "shut down and update" option once and since that the option of installing Windows 8.1 has disappeared.

After Update Cannot Boot In Windows 8 Pro

Dec 16, 2012

I have a fresh install of Windows 8 Pro on a new PC and have done for some weeks. On Friday i hit the shutdown option Update and Restart. On the Saturday (yesterday) I turned on my machine to greeted with the Windows 8 Logo then a blank screen and doesn't boot at all into Windows (And not i have checked both monitors and they connected fine.

What was i doing just BEFORE "Update and Restart".......

1. Enabled UEFI on the BIOS
2. Installed the Hyper-V Windows 8 Features
3. Created and installed a Virtual Switch
4. Created and installed a Virtual Machine and installed Windows 8.
5. Onto the VM i installed Visual Studio 2012 Web (MVC4) and SQL Server Express 2012 (NOT LocalDb)

Then after than i ran the Windows Update on the main PC and pressed "Update and Restart".

What have I tried doing to resolve this issue?

Booted (F12) using the OEM Disc. I have then Repair your computer->Troubleshoot....

1.1 Advanced Options
1.2 Automatic Repair
1.3 This fails and I get the following error:

[URL] ....

then i tried....

2.1 Refresh PC
2.2 I get the following error:

"The Drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again"

then i tried....

3.1 Reset PC
3.2 I get the following error:

"Unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing"

then i tried....

4.1 System Restore
4.2 This fails and i get the following error:

[URL] ....

So I'm completely at a loss. I presume if I unlock the primary disk I should be able to boot or at least repair? Anyway i really don't want to wipe and uninstall if possible.

Windows 8.1 Fails To Load After Update

Aug 14, 2014

My problem is that my computer no longer is able see Windows 8.1 on bootup. I get a "Loading OS".... message and nothing happens.

Before this happened, I reset my computer from Windows with the intent to change a BIOS setting for the CPU fan and an Windows update was applied on reboot. Windows (apparently) installed the update and then I got to the login screen. At this point, instead of logging into Windows, I hit the reset button to make the BIOS change. After doing this, when I tried to boot again, Windows would even begin to load and I got the "Loading OS" message immediately. Is it possible that Windows did not finish installing the update even though I was at the login screen for Windows 8.1?

I then booted from the USB flash drive with Windows 8 install files (not 8.1... I upgraded from 8 to 8.1). I went into the repair option and then I got the message that no repairs could be found or were needed. (Interestingly now when I try the repair option, the computer automatically reboots so the repair option appears to be very broken now.)

Next, I tried to see if my disks were working and they seem to be. Attached is a screenshot when I list the volumes. C: drive is a HDD data drive without Windows. D: drive appears to be some sort of system restore partition (as far as I understand). F: drive is the SSD with Windows installed on it. I can navigate through all directories fine on the SSD and the drive seems healthy. (E: drive is the USB drive.) When I unhook the data drive, all the letters get shifted up one and this does not seem to be a factor in reviving Windows. Are the drive letters important? I find it odd that the SDD does not show up as C drive with or without the data drive installed.

I tried the sfc /scannow option in offline but I cannot get it to run. I believe that I am entering the letters correctly (and I have tried different variations). Please check if I am not typing this in correctly given my drive letters.---How do I get this to run?

I also tried to apply the Windows System Restore option on my flash drive, I seemingly was able to restore to a restore point set this morning. However, Windows is still not found at bootup at all.

At this point, I'm at a complete loss on how to proceed short of reinstalling Windows. Other options from the Windows 8 repair screen seem to result in loss of programs or data.

For the record, my motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3. I tried restore some BIOS settings to no effect.

Windows 8 Apps Gone After Update / Can't Restore

Aug 1, 2013

My brother installed an update on his windows 8 laptop this morning. After doing so, all his apps/programs and everything were gone. It was just a blank start up page and blank desktop (except google chrome for some reason.) I tried a system restore twice, and a scan to see if that would fix it. Nothing worked, so I decided to just reset his laptop to factory settings as a last resort. However, pressing shift + F8 upon start up or space bar F8 did not bring up the windows restore option page (whatever it is called, bear with me!) The only other way to get to it would be "change pc settings" on the desktop. I clicked that and that isn't working either. Nothing comes up.

Edit: forgot to add that he does not have Windows 8 discs!

Debugging :: BSOD On Windows 8.1 Update 1 Even When Not In Use

Apr 26, 2014

I have had a long history of BSOD issues on this system, and have exhausted my patience in trying to fix it. I have done my own research to no avail, and have even utilized my warranty to get parts replaced. At this point in time I have a replaced motherboard and video card but the BSOD issues have actually increased in frequency.

For testing I have re-loaded Windows. Ran tests on the memory. Replaced the hard drive with an SSD. Updated drivers as best as I could based on the version of Windows and availability of drivers, and as mentioned I have even had the Motherboard and Video card replaced. The only hardware left to rule out is Power Supply and CPU.

Win 8.1 - Reboots Like Installing New Windows After Update

May 15, 2014

Win 8.1

Every time after a major automatic update through Windows Updater, after rebooting, the computer starts the same process as the last steps when you install a fresh version of Windows 8, that is, you see the multicolor screens one after the other with the message that it's installing your apps, then don't turn off the computer etc. After the sequence is over, I'm taken to a blank screen and I have to log out and in to my profile. It seems, that after the update I'm being logged out.

I only have one user with the computer and I turned off the guest account. Also and It may be related,Can't create a new user account. I created a new user account with administrator privileges as usual, but the new account does not show when I log off and then in or try change accounts. It also isn't listed on the upper right corner of the start page.

Basically even though I see it in other accounts, I can't switch to it. I turned on Guest Account and also I can't choose it.

Setup Installation :: Can't Update To Windows 8.1

Oct 18, 2013

I am currently on Windows 8. I am trying ti update to 8.1. I went to the store and hit download. The download started and got to 50% then a message said 'installing preparing your pc'. About 15 seconds after that it starts all over downloading. This has repeatedly happened for the last 14 hours. I have restarted and shutdown my pc and when I go back to the store and hit download it says it is downloading. I tried to cancel the download without success. I then went back to download again and it tells me app has been installed.

P.S. Are there any other ways to do the update besides from the store?

Updates :: How To Revert A Windows Update

Jun 17, 2014

My son has an MSI Laptop running Windows 8.1. Following a recent Windows update (he cannot be more specific) he is no longer able to use his Admin (the only one) account. He sees the mouse pointer but the rest of the screen is black. Ctrl-Alt-Del does bring up a panel offering the usual options to shut down, reboot, Task Manager, etc. - but when I select Task Manager with the intention of seeing what processes are running, the dialogue does appear, but before it is properly displayed it vanishes.

Meanwhile the HDD light is burning constantly. If I simply leave the machine for 30 minutes or so, then the HDD activity subsides but there is still a blank screen. Moving the mouse pointer to the top or bottom right hand side of the screen has no effect.

Unfortunately we did not have the wits to set restore points Interestingly the other account (not administrator) is working without problem.
