How To Stop Administrator Permission Prompts On USB Device
Apr 13, 2013
Every time I move files on my portable hard drive, it says it needs administrator permission to continue. I click yes and it works, but it consumes a lot of extra time every time I move files from one folder to another. How can I stop this from asking every time?

I have a game file that I have deleted/modified many, many times with no problem and now it seems I don't have permission to do so.
I used information from Take Ownership of a File, Folder, Drive, or Registry Key in Windows 8 to add the convenient "Take Ownership" option for files and I have ownership of the file in question.
It shows that I have "Full Control" over the file.
But when I try to delete the file I get:
When I click "Try Again" I get:
why I lost permission to do this all of the sudden and how do I make sure it doesn't happen again?

i have just started using windows 8.1 on a new laptop and i am logged in as an administrator. i am trying to edit the hosts. txt file in
C:WindowsSystem32driversetchosts.txt
however i keep getting this message:
C:WindowsSystem32driversetchosts.txt
You don't have permission to save in this location.
Contact the administrator to obtain permission.
Would you like to save in the My Documents folder instead?
how can i alter the permissions level. i mean, i should be logged in as an administrator so why does the system think that i am not the administrtor and where can i go to alter it.

I have followed the instructions from the Windows 7 forum on changing the owner/permissions for a file from Trusted Installer to Administrator but cannot see an EDIT button. I am trying to delete files associated with the Delta Search malware which was detected and deactivated by Malwarebytes.

I've always loved the older version of Microsoft Windows Paint for Windows XP edition.
After some research, I learned that I could download that older version and replace it with the one I had on Windows 8.1 At first, I tried to replace it in the system32 folder, but it said,
"You do not have permission to perform this action. You require permission from TrustedInstaller." After researching the internet, I learned step by step tutorial on how to change the owner which was TrustedInstaller; learned how to grant permission to me; the administrator over the system files. It has been said, "You should be able to access that particular file or folder. Be careful when you alter the permission for System file or folder it may cause serious damage to your system and compromise security. So please create a system restore point[/URL] first and then proceed with caution."
My question is.....can granting full control to the administrator over system32 folder cause problems or issues? Is this wise to do?
If not, I revert back to granting permission to TrustedInstaller over system32 folder.
All I wanted was to replace mspaint.exe with an older version from Windows XP edition.

I'm running Windows 8.1 (standard/ home edition) and can't download a couple .exe files. I get "You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy to this folder". errors. I'm the only user on this computer and have administrator access.
The file resides on mediafire and via my ipad I was able to manage to transfer it to dropbox, but I still get the same error. The filename (partial) is created but no further downloading is done.
I can't take ownership of the file-- it doesn't exist on my computer yet.
I can't change the local security policy (I understand this is only available in Win 8 Pro version).
UAC is already disabled as much as I can figure (via the slider set to never notify).
Short of setting up a super admin account (would this even work?)

I have an HP Envy and I would like Windows 8.1 to prompt me for a password both after I close (and open) my laptop lid and after waking it from sleep (Which it automatically does after 3 minutes of inactivity), however it only prompts for password after opening the lid (even if only closed for 5 seconds), and not after waking from sleep without a closed lid.
here are my settings:

Windows 8 FILE EXPLORER has begun prompting me that it "can't find" or items "do not exist" when I try to manipulate the files in any manner. Of course they DO exist and oddly, if I repeat the command, the job gets done.
So...the functions seem to work, but I must repeat them and deal with this pesky prompt.
I am reluctant to use System Restore as I have made some time consuming changes to my OS since this problem started and do no suspect it will be successful.
scannow did not find any errors.
I use Firefox and am 64 bit.

Last part of the message, (Device Descriptor Request Failed). I get this, in Device Manager, and I have searched for an answer on the net. Also it is a Code 43. I went through my laptop, with an HP Technician this morning, I might add at a cost of 5p/minute, for 30 odd minutes. He has said that because I had gone over to Windows 8.1 and the recovery discs I made will not load, to put back in Windows 8. I have to send the laptop back for re-installing the OS, because Windows 8.1 do not have the update for my problem. Also the R.H. USB socket has a failure ID:0GAPTK-6T7716-MFPWWK-8D1Q03. I personally think that this is all what the problem is. a duff USB. Is this a cop-out???
Does Windows 8.1 having driver WHQL problems?
I only found out the problem with the usb when I tried to download a Mobi file to a Kindle for my wife. The other usb's work OK.

Problem on some or all of our 8.1 devices.
We have a user without local admin rights, whenever he changes location or between wifi/lan on the office he gets an UAC prompt, it doesn't say anymore then "Network" but i assume it is for network profiles.
Why and how to get rid of it? it is an domain account with a microsoft account attached to it, syncing skydrive and som stuff.

every time my PC reboots, the system file gets overwritten with an updated version of bigger size (150 KB). For some reason, I do not want that.
how to prevent that..may be by setting denied permission on the ab.sys file..is there a way?

I'm stuck. I ran Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant prior to installing Win 8. According to the report I needed to delete Intel(R) Pro Network Connection 12.1.12, which I did.
I upgraded to Win 8 but now I have no permissions. I'll looked at all the threads about opening a cmd windows, which I can, but since I logon to the O/S with just user level permissions I can't issue any admin level apps. I can't even navigate to my C: drive. I get 'Access is denied'.
I'm tried right-clicking on the Command Prompt and 'Run as Administrator', nothing. Which makes sense since I'm logon on with only User rights.
I need full admin rights. I can't update my HOSTS file which really screws up my FTP and Telnet sessions.
I cannot logon as administrator, so I can't change anything. Should I reinstall??

I support an older piece of software(vb) and am running into a lot of issues on windows 8 not seen on windows 7.
Our software installs some setting etc hkeylocalmachine >software>wow3264>our program>folders etc>>>
One of the issues is some machines seem to randomly lose their data values or revert to an older value(for example a data folder will switch from the network to the default location. Another example is a license code being deemed expired. Often a perfectly valid license will no longer be valid. The user is prompted to enter a code. If I enter a new code it still says expired. The fix ive used which is annoying is running the program as admin and applying the license code- Normally if the user then opens the program as the user after this it will work but they will again lose the value.
Always running as admin is not really a fix because then user cant see their printers or mapped drives in windows 8. And that is something I am not really supposed to support too often. They don't want me to be their tech support.
how this is happening, is it UAC? My guess is when the user installs it asks for admin, the users clicks ok and it installs. But then I dont understand why it works for a while and then quits.

How can I give a specific program PERMANENT permission to run?
E.g. I still use a (very light and fast) desktop search utility called "Everything". It JUST searches filenames, and this is sometimes very useful.
I don't want to turn off my User Account Control Setting (UACS) completely because I want it to stop anything that I haven't given permission to from running. But it's incredibly irritating that every single time I open my "Everything" application that I am have to give it permission to run.
Where can I find (and stop) which application are being loaded at startup?

So My computer has been acting up. I downloaded a "free" antivirus that turned out to be a virus. It just slows my computer up and hasn't fried anything yet, However i was able to download AVG and stop any major issues from occurring. Now I am trying to delete said "free" antivirus, yet i keep getting this message. "Need permission from SYSTEM to make any changes to this file." I have no idea what that means especially considering I am the SYSTEM as far as I am concerned with this computer. Somehow my firewall and antivirus had been disabled months ago and I know I didn't do it. This was a couple of weeks ago. Since then, I have been fighting to keep my computer alive.

I have my OS settings configured not to check for and install updates unless I prompt Windows to do so. I recently manually installed some updates. A few days later I noticed Windows was installing updates upon start up. I checked my update settings and sure enough they were set for everything to check and install updates automatically. What is going on here? I never noticed this kind of behavior with Vista or Windows 7. Any way to truly stop automatic updates?

I was transferring files from one external drive to another, I found a problem with a set of folders that I could not transfer with permission which should have been fine as I have administrator rights.
Looking at the folder permissions I found an unknown user account
Looking for solutions I tried to delete this account but was not allowed unless I turned off inherited permissions
I tried turning off the inheritance but this resulted in an error saying it failed to enumerate the number of objects in the container access denied.
Looking at some individual files (in one of the offending folders) properties showed 'Unable to display current owner' selecting the 'Change' option allowed me to change the file ownership to Everyone - Full Control and I could then move or delete the file.
There are quite a lot of files to do so is there a way to change all the affected folder & file permissions in one move?

What I am trying to do is sort my favorites for the IE10 app. So far there seems to be no way to manually arrange the favorites so what I tried to do was change the sort in the favorites folder under C/USERS/myname etc. I was going to add a 1 to the detail tab in the file properties but I get an error message reading "You need to provide administrator permission to apply properties to this file." If I select continue the message reads "You need permission to perform this action" "You require permission from MEMe to make changes to this file"
I am the only user and set up as the system administrator. I have tried completely disabling UAC and installed "Take Ownsership" Nothing has allowed me to do this. Now my problem is there is no reason why I can't add a 1 to the detail description to a file for sorting. What harm could possibly come from editing that field. Most importantly, if I am the system administrator why am I fighting for permission from myself?

Many times in the past when I buy a new computer, I backup the hard drive of the one I am getting rid of to an external drive, I then try to access from the new computer and I get permission errors.
I'm about to replace my computer yet again and I was wondering the best way to do this to avoid any issues.
This is the first time I am doing it between 2 Windows 8.1 computers and wondering since I login to both with my microsoft account, if the issues will still be there.
Also, free backup software would work too. I usually use free version of Macrium but it has become a lot more limited.

I did some research and found out how to fix it, it requires me editing permissions in component services but when I get into the properties/security tab of the service I cant edit anything it looks like this..
when I click on my computer in distributed Com and go into properties it is enabled on this computer...
