Accounts :: How To Give Admin Permission To Limited User
Jul 23, 2013
I am an administrator with 3 limited users on a windows 8 machine. I have installed a game on my account that I want to let one of my users play. I have tried everything I have read about giving permissions, admin right etc, but it still asks for my password everytime he opens the game?

After upgrading Windows 8 to 8.1 - my standard user does no longer have administration rights.
in computer administration ->local user and Groups - the properties for the user shows that the user belongs the Group administrators.
However when I access the user account in the control panel the user shows up as "standard" and I cannot change that while logged in as standard user.
I have tried logging in as Administrator (using the built in administrator) - but here I am also unable to change the setting of the standard user from "standard" to "Administrator" - the "change account type" button is greyed out and cannot be clicked.
I have tried everything I can think of, read all I could find on the net - but to no avail.

I have a friend who keeps getting borderline malware (e.g. browser toolbars) installed on his computer. There is even an active antivirus on his pc (I believe norton). It comes with his new pc and is valid for 1 year.
After I clean his pc, if I change his account type from administrator to limited user, it should prevent any toolbars from installing, right?
Would this break any software or cause any file to become inaccessible?

I have been using an unelevated admin user account since installing win 8.1 pro and I've been having problems constantly (UAC nagging me, access denied when trying to kill processes and so on) and I decided I want to use the elevated admin account as my main. I understand security risks and convenience is more important to me as I don't have any sensitive information on my laptop. I was wondering if I can merge the user account I used until now, which has all my app settings, with the elevated admin user account and use that one from now on.

How can I give a specific program PERMANENT permission to run?
E.g. I still use a (very light and fast) desktop search utility called "Everything". It JUST searches filenames, and this is sometimes very useful.
I don't want to turn off my User Account Control Setting (UACS) completely because I want it to stop anything that I haven't given permission to from running. But it's incredibly irritating that every single time I open my "Everything" application that I am have to give it permission to run.
Where can I find (and stop) which application are being loaded at startup?

I've got a sony viao ultra book running Windows 8.1. My user account is set to open with a four digit pin. Unfortunately, although I know the PIN number, I have forgotten both the user and the admin password. So I can't load any new software as it asks me for the admin password every time. How to retrieve both passwords?

Windows 8 pro: I have a user account with admin rights. It used to work fine till one day, after rebooting, I had no tiles in the start view. I ran chkdsk and it seems to have fixed the problem but now when I run any application as "Run as administrator" I get: Windows cannot find '[The exe]'. Make sure you've typed the name correctly, then try again.
If, however, I run the same app as normal and it works - thus the exe exists and there is no problem with the app itself. (Also check in the file system)
If I create a new user with admin rights I get the same issue.
(The other old user with admin rights are working fine.)

I am using windows 8 pro OS. I have only one local account on my machine. My account is already in Administrator groups. I have checked that.
My problem is that I am not able to create/change any user account from control panel. After traversing to Control PanelAll Control Panel ItemsUser Accounts.
There are all the different links named as below:
Change your account name
Change your account type
Manage other account etc..
However when I click on any of these links, nothing happens at all !!!
What could be the possible reason of this? Window is updated, I am able to do other stuff that only admin can do for example: installing/uninstalling software, running system tools etc. Moreover I am able to make changes to user accounts from Computer Management.

I'm setting up a stolen laptop tracking software and want to leave a standard/non-admin user account open for a potential thief. The software requires someone to log in and connect to the internet in order to start tracking. So if I only have my personal admin account password protected, I will be out of luck. The problem is that while logged in as a standard user I am able to access recovery options. From there I can use advance startup and proceed to reset my pc. If a thief logs in and resets my pc right away, I will have no way of tracking them. I have windows 8.1 standard and have not been able to find any way from restricting access to the recovery options.

Sometimes when I boot Windows 8.1, I get a generic screen that tells me that my profile couldn't be accessed and I now have a temporary profile. I went to the event viewer and it also said that it couldn't find my profile. I am the only user and administrator. Is there a way to make a new user profile AND not loose my files and settings.

I'm stuck. I ran Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant prior to installing Win 8. According to the report I needed to delete Intel(R) Pro Network Connection 12.1.12, which I did.
I upgraded to Win 8 but now I have no permissions. I'll looked at all the threads about opening a cmd windows, which I can, but since I logon to the O/S with just user level permissions I can't issue any admin level apps. I can't even navigate to my C: drive. I get 'Access is denied'.
I'm tried right-clicking on the Command Prompt and 'Run as Administrator', nothing. Which makes sense since I'm logon on with only User rights.
I need full admin rights. I can't update my HOSTS file which really screws up my FTP and Telnet sessions.
I cannot logon as administrator, so I can't change anything. Should I reinstall??

Quicktime stopped working. Logged in as admin. Uninstalled then tried reinstall of 7.74.80.86 and 7.6 using 'run as admin'. No luck. Insufficient privileges to the directory--c:program files (x86) Quicktime. When I look at the folder properties under security---'You must have read permission to view. You do not have permission EVEN AS ADMINISTRATOR'.

I just bought my 15 year old son a laptop with Windows 8. I was able to set up my Admin account and his "standard" account, and put a time curfew and limits on his account, but when I logged in as him, I saw that he would be able to create another account which would pretty much defeat the whole time limit thing! Is there a way to prevent all but admin accounts to be able to create more accounts?? I'm pretty technically savvy but this new Windows 8 is not as easy to navigate as the previous versions!! (I wouldn't mind a "classic view" either, if that exists!)

I was transferring files from one external drive to another, I found a problem with a set of folders that I could not transfer with permission which should have been fine as I have administrator rights.
Looking at the folder permissions I found an unknown user account
Looking for solutions I tried to delete this account but was not allowed unless I turned off inherited permissions
I tried turning off the inheritance but this resulted in an error saying it failed to enumerate the number of objects in the container access denied.
Looking at some individual files (in one of the offending folders) properties showed 'Unable to display current owner' selecting the 'Change' option allowed me to change the file ownership to Everyone - Full Control and I could then move or delete the file.
There are quite a lot of files to do so is there a way to change all the affected folder & file permissions in one move?

What I am trying to do is sort my favorites for the IE10 app. So far there seems to be no way to manually arrange the favorites so what I tried to do was change the sort in the favorites folder under C/USERS/myname etc. I was going to add a 1 to the detail tab in the file properties but I get an error message reading "You need to provide administrator permission to apply properties to this file." If I select continue the message reads "You need permission to perform this action" "You require permission from MEMe to make changes to this file"
I am the only user and set up as the system administrator. I have tried completely disabling UAC and installed "Take Ownsership" Nothing has allowed me to do this. Now my problem is there is no reason why I can't add a 1 to the detail description to a file for sorting. What harm could possibly come from editing that field. Most importantly, if I am the system administrator why am I fighting for permission from myself?

Today I thought I'd set a picture for my user account.
Nothing happens when I click or double click on the user account icon in the control panel.
I then went to check if our other pc was the same but that's fine.
I did notice that on mine instead of an icon of two people the icon is that of a folder.
I have tried accessing it through "Godmode" and it says it can't find it and also all the icons for user tasks are a blank piece of paper.

I am trying to elevate a command given (in this case just another cmd.exe) if the user is not admin. However i get the error:
Code:
C:Usersmetul_000>runas /user:administrator cmd.exe
Enter the password for administrator:
Attempting to start cmd.exe as user "WINDOWS8administrator" ...
RUNAS ERROR: Unable to run - cmd.exe
1326: The user name or password is incorrect.
C:Usersmetul_000>
This is a personal pc, and I know i put in the password correctly as i have done it a few times slowly typing in my admin password to confirm that it is input correctly. So why am i getting this error? Initially my overall goal is to get this python script to say you are admin ...
Code:
import ctypes
import subprocess
import sys
import os
[Code] ......
if you are admin its done, but if you are not admin then it reruns itself with the so called run as command to get admin rights. However currently it just pulls up the run as usage messages. The full command this script attempts to run then is:
Code:
C:Usersmetul_000>runas /user:administrator "python3 test2.py"
Enter the password for administrator:
Attempting to start python3 test2.py as user "WINDOWS8administrator" ...
RUNAS ERROR: Unable to run - python3 test2.py
1326: The user name or password is incorrect.

I am trying to add a second account to my machine and whether I try a Local or Microsoft account, I get the same "User Profile Service failed the sign-in. User profile cannot be loaded" error every time I try to sign in for the first time. I've Googled this a bit and it seems everything I've found yet (except one) has been with logging in to existing profiles. For the one that was with a new profile, the solution didn't work.
I tried deleting all files similar to the specified one (file in C:UsersDefaultAppDataLocalMicrosoftVSCommon12.0SQM with name of "sqmdata-####-###-#####.sqm"), but that had no effect. I'm guessing this is because I have VS2013 installed, as this happens with my laptop as well. I don't want to delete my profile, I have important (and large) data in my documents folder that I don't want to lose. I'm guessing this will have to do with messing with the registry, but I don't know where to begin.

So, I wanted to download a game from the windows store and had to create a Live/microsoft account. After doning so win 8 made that account the account that I use to sigh-in to windows. Didn't wanted that so I went to user managment and deleted the account from thare. The problem is that I also accidenly deleted my windows user account as well.
After I restarted, I got to the password screen and my windows user was gone, just "other user". I tryed to enter the windows user name and password but nothing. the screen also showed the microsoft acount name but here also the password dident work (probably because a deleted them both from the system...)

I have recently installed 8.1 on my desktop with 3 local user accounts (no Microsoft accounts) and no user passwords, and Guest account Off. I have bypassed the lock screen but whenever the computer is switched on or a user signs out, the OS loads the last user instead of going to the user select screen. Something that all Windows OSs have done from go to Win 7. I can back arrow which does display the user select screen.
Or more importantly, any way to make it act like all previous Windows systems. I would not be fussed if this was a single user computer.

I just bought a new Windows 8 Dell Vostro 5470 laptop. I signed in with my Live account, which I use on my main computer everyday.
I upgraded into Windows 8.1, and set up fingerprint authentication as well. I didn't have a problem signing in with it, nor with my 12-character password (which I used today on my PC to log in).
Last night I locked the laptop (from the ctrl+alt+del screen) and left it. By the time I got back, it went into hibernation or something. Meaning to say, it looked turned off. I didn't touch it until today.
When I turn it back on today, I couldn't sign in. Neither the fingerprint wasn't working, nor my password - but then on a closer look, I saw that I couldn't enter more than 9 characters in the password field! Restart didn't work. Reminder - my password is 12 characters long and I used it just the day before.
Disclaimer: this is a brand new laptop, nothing is installed on it. The only things I did with it were Windows Update, upgrade to 8.1, set up fingerprint log-in and surf the web a little bit. I don't mind totally resetting everything, I just don't know how to do it.

Prior to last week my computer was running Windows 7, the computer also has a 3TB MyBook external drive on which I ripped over 100 movies from DVD/Blue-Rays that I own (and still have). The reason for doing that was 1) so I could watch the movies on my TV without the hassle of inserting the dvd into the blue-ray player, and (2) reduce the amount of storage space (I threw away the original containers and put them in a simple DVD file).
Last week I installed a new internal hard drive and did a clean install of Windows 8. Consequently my admin account's user name was changed to be the same as my Microsoft live.com account name. Now I can't access any of the folders on MyBook without taking ownership of them one-at-a-time. That is going to be very very time consuming to do that for over 100 folders. Any faster way to accomplish this?
I don't know why Microsoft won't allow computer Administrator to access any folder on his computer. This is just dumb.
The situation gets even worse -- after taking ownership of the folders I still can't access any of the files or sub-folders. I have to do that for every folder and file, somewhere around 500 of them! I feel like just reformatting the drive and starting all over again.

I've had my Windows 8 computer for several months... it's been working really well, absolutely no problems.
But today... when I turned on my computer... I signed into my account like always (the only admin account on the computer)... and it keeps signing me into a temporary profile instead.
A balloon pops up in the corner, telling me it's a temporary account and to try again later or something.
I restarted the computer about five times... but still... it takes me to a temporary account, rather than my real account.

I have never had a firm understanding of creating user accounts especially those added to a domain. I have to install windows 8.1 on my work laptop and I need to have someone from my work add a user to our domain. What would happen if I installed windows 8 and all the programs that I use before the user was added to the domain. Will this user have access to all the programs that were installed or would I potentially need to perform a hack or re-install the programs on that account?

I am using windows 8 on an HP desktop computer. I created 2 users (same computer). What I would like to do is have both users have the same desktop files and start menu between the two. For example the first one I created has a bunch of folders I put on the desktop recovered from my old computer, but when I log on with the other account they are not there. I also installed ms office on my computer with the first user- but it is not available to the other one.
Is there a way to link these 2 so I can still have different logins but access the same files?
