I am trying to be able to see CR2 files (RAW photo files from Canon) as thumbnail icons in Windows Explorer. I am using Windows 8.
Microsoft's codec pack (Download: Microsoft Camera Codec Pack - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details) does not work for Windows 8. When I am trying to install it, I get an error message mentioning that I can use Windows 8 Update function, but doesn't give any more information on how to do this exactly.
I am running a qnap NAS in my home network. I can connect to the NAS no issues at all, I can copy small files across the network no issues. However I want to rebuild my NAS so am performing a backup across the network. I want to copy approx 2tb in a single copy. However when I do a select all, copy and paste, it's only copies about 40gb of the data. I am running Windows 8 ...

Basically I want to edit files freely in program files and anywhere.
I can't just right click it and hit properties -> security -> users and change them, it's locked
Here are the simple instructions from "Windows 8 for Dummies" (p. 109):
1. Insert the blank CD into your disc burner. Then click or tap the Notification Box that appears in the screen's upper-right corner.
2. When the Notification box asks how you'd like to proceed, click the box's Burn Files to a Disc option.
Windows 8 displays a Burn a Disc dialog box and asks you to create a title for the disc.
So I insert a blank CD into my new Dell Inspiron's D drive. Nothing happens. No "Notification box" or anything else appears in the screen's upper-right corner. So what am I supposed to do?
Windows 8.1. I can't see mp4 files with file explorer or itunes.
They are there. This is on a hard drive &/or on a sd card on a phone. All other files seem ok
I have a couple of files that I am trying to download on my new PC. My new PC has Windows 8.1. The files appear to be downloading but get to 98-99% and then stop. I eventually get an error message. I am not a home posting so I don't have the exact error. It is either oxo or oco 000005. I have Norton 360 and it says the file is safe. The one file I have tried to download multiple times is the Garmin Lifetime Updater. This is an exe. file.

Then press OK.
Trying to use Windows to burn files to a DVD. I go into the explorer window. Click share. Then burn to disc. Sometimes it gives me the error that the folder is in the same location of the source folder. And now it just the destination has the same names. And wants me to cancel or replace. If I replace it just hangs there. I used Nero and was able to write to the DVD fine so I know its not a DVD issue. It opens a duplicate window and at the bottom of the files it lists the new files ready to be written.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have 2 lots of Windows old files clogging up my drive.
Every time I try to get rid of them, there is an error of some sort, needs permission, is open in another program etc.
Is there a simple way to delete these without all of the questions etc? I just want to free up the space and get rid of the files.
I finally got a CD to work in my new Dell computer. The files on the CD that I want to copy onto my computer are shown listed on the Windows 8 desktop or rather whatever the page is called that shows "Library," "Documents," "Music," etc. But there is nothing that shows me how to copy the files into the folder that I created in "Documents" where I want them saved.
There is no "save" in the File menu. There is no support (which refers to some screen, with an arrow by Files and so forth, that I have never seen before nor know how to find, so it makes no sense at all, it must be for Windows 7 or 8.1 or something). There is no support in "Windows 8 for Dummies." How to copy these files.
Is it safe to delete these annoying files if so, how do I do that safely?

I have a large collection of files on the XP that I would like to bring over to Win 8. The XP cannot yet be connected to the Internet; but its USB ports works fine.
Any way I can connect the two through USB to copy files from the XP to the Win 8?

Do other windows 8.1 users have this issue to where files are not able to be saved either?
I think I found the culprit in the security tab about preventing files from be saved
I have some mp4 files(movies 1080p) that worked fine on Windows 8. Now I have windows 8.1 and my files won't play in WMP, nor the metro version called "media player" and it causes Itunes to crash.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have several webpages that I created in Windows XP using Notepad with simple html coding. When I open one of these files under Documents in Windows XP, it is shown exactly as it appears on the Web. In order to edit the coding, I click on "View" and then "Source" and the html coding appears.
I've transferred these files to my new computer with Windows 8, but there's no way to view the coding and edit. I right-clicked on a file and the dialogue box that appears includes "edit." But when I click on "edit," I get the message "There is no program associated with this file to perform this activity." Well, the "program" that I used to create the file was Notepad. Is there no Notepad in Windows 8, and if there is, is it incompatible with Windows XP Notepad?
Is there no way to edit html in Windows 8 without finding some editing program to download or purchase? (I gather from "Windows 8 for Dummies" that there isn't, since "html" is not even in the index.)
Ok maybe and it is not a terrible bug but when i try to delete any files from folders the files delete.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI can't open .EXE files in Windows 8.1 Pro without renaming the file to .exe
The exe file downloads as _exe and not as .exe
I thought I had malware so did a clean install of Win 8.1 Pro to 8 Pro and updated back to win 8.1 Pro ...
Simply stated I can open an exe file only if I rename it from _exe to .exe
It is more of a minor nuisance to rename every exe file.... I have searched this website prior to posting and have Googled but only the file name change seems to allow me to open a .exe file ....
Every time I use a FLAC file, I noticed on the delete, and rename in right click context menu, there is a UAC shield next to the text, initially thought nothing of it, but now I just go to delete the FLAC files, and it's refusing to let me, says I need Administration Permission, thing is...I am the admin!!
Same issue when I select rename, or drag to another folder. Is there anyways to stop Windows from locking these files? It's literally only FLAC files it does it with!
I am a big music collector, and have never had any issues with my PC and audio. I am using Windows 8.1 and for months things have worked great. My chosen audio is ALWAYS MP3 320kbps as I find it much more flexible than FLAC, and can barely notice the difference in quality so it works well for me.
Normally when I download FLAC files, I run them through a program called Goldwave (an app I have used for years) and convert them to MP3 320, I tell Goldwave to delete the FLAC files once conversion is complete.
I noticed recently that the FLAC files are not being deleted, problem with Goldwave I thought, but on further inspection, I cannot delete FLAC files within Windows Explorer!!
It says I need permission to delete them, even though I am Windows 8.1 administrator. When I right click a FLAC file, the delete and rename part has a UAC shield next to the text. Strange thing is, if I leave the FLAC file along for about 5 minutes, the shields vanish, and I am able to delete, why is this happening?
I previously messed around with UAC settings, but nothing has worked, when the shields display in the right click menu, I try an app called Unlocker, and even this wont delete them. This is ONLY happening with FLAC files, what's gripping onto these files? How I find out? And stop it.
I want to backup my files from my operating systems Windows 8 and mac os Mountain Lion on one external hard drive. How would it be done and what file systems should the partitions be ?
