Accounts :: Lock Screen - PIN Cannot Be Entered Password Rejected

The system is set to start the screen saver after 10 minutes, and to display the logon screen on resume.
The power settings are:
Sleep after: Never
Allow hybrid sleep: On
Turn off display after: 20 minutes
Require a password on wakeup: Yes
The system is set to display a screen requesting a PIN rather than a password.
When I went to access the system, I clicked the screen and the prompt for the PIN was displayed as usual. However, when I typed in my PIN using the keypad (Num Lock was on), nothing appeared in the field. I then switched to the password prompt and entered my password. I could see the usual obscuring dots in the field, and there is no doubt that I struck the correct keys, however my password was rejected twice. I rebooted the system and everything was normal.
Setup Installation :: Error - Product Key Entered Does Not Match Any Of Windows Images?
Nov 25, 2013I recently purchased a MSI GT70 laptop that came preinstalled with Windows 8. Rather than try and uninstall all the bloatware, I was planning on just doing a clean install. Little did I know that Microsoft had changed the game when it comes to authentication on Windows 8 with the bios linked product keys.
The Windows 8 usb drive that I used previously to install Windows 8 on other computers does not work, I believe that is due to it recognizing it as a RETAIL version trying to be installed on an OEM system. Searching around, it seemed other people had success with using an .ISO from TechNet or MSDN and the installation automatically pulling the product key information. The .iso I used was sourced from the Microsoft store download.
After booting to the disk, I received this error: The product key entered does not match any of the Windows images available for installation. Enter a different product key.
I tried manually adding the PID.txt file with the product key I pulled from pkeyui (cross checked with showkey.vbs and RWEverything) but that resulted in the same error. For this notebook, the product key and MSDM are identical, whereas I read other people were finding two different product keys. One nestled deep in the bios and the other being what you see when you run Belarc Advisor etc.
Burning the .iso to a DVD and then starting the setup inside a session of Windows 8 resulted in a different error: this product key cannot be used to install a retail version
So once again back to the issue of using a retail .iso with an OEM product key to try and do a clean install. As far as I know you can't download an "oem .iso" but I'm not sure how to get the retail .iso to play nicely with the product key I have.
So exactly how does one do a clean install of an OEM windows 8 build on a laptop that comes preinstalled with windows 8? If I can't sort this out, I may be stuck with rooting out the bloatware.
Win 8.1 - Spinning Wheel Keeps On Turning On Certain Sites

Apr 16, 2014So yesterday I upgraded from a slow, ancient T1 to Verizon's "Home Fusion" 4G LTE broadband. It's amazing how fast it is, but I seem to have a problem where occasionally I can't connect to certain sites.
For example, I'll be surfing Facebook and all of a sudden it'll just stop connecting and I can't do anything. BUT if I jump over to my laptop (running Windows 7) or my iPad, both of which are on the same network, it works fine.
If I then reboot the Windows 8.1 PC, all of a sudden I can access Facebook again, for awhile, until it craps out again at some point and I need to reboot again. It's not just FB either. This happens with a handful of other random sites as well, but when it does I can still access 99.9% of other sites just fine.
One thing I've noticed is that whenever I can't load a site, it seems like it's almost always waiting for some type of CDN-based content to load. Often if I hit the stop button in the browser the page then shows up immediately.
Like when I first tried loading this site, it just sat there forever and in the lower left corner of the browser it said "Waiting for yui.yahooapis.com" then after awhile I just hit X and then eightforums displayed just fine...
Browser doesn't matter. I've tried them all. I've tried flushing DNS, resetting winsock, etc. and nothing works except rebooting. Another odd thing I noticed while messing around is that I don't seem to have a HOSTS file in the normal location. I can't find it anywhere??
At first I thought this new verizon router just has flaky wifi so I switched to a direct connect via ethernet hoping that would solve the problem, but nope. It's definitely not that because like I said when it happens I can jump on my laptop connected to the same network via wifi and I can connect to FB just fine on that machine.
Both machines are running the same firewall/antivirus setup, and this Windows 8.1 machine is free from all malware, rootkits, etc.
Yesterday I tried testing different DNS servers (Google, OpenDNS etc) but that didn't work. But it did lead to something else weird - today if I try to do the same by opening up the TCP/IPv4 properties for my ethernet adaptor I get the following error message:
"In order to configure TCP/IP, you must install and enable a network adaptor card."
I just tried re-installing the latest drivers for the ethernet adaptor but that made no difference (it's an onboard Intel I217-LM). I've also tried different/new ethernet cables just for kicks.
I'm starting to wonder if the fact that my connections look like a mobile phone while my browser headers/useragent etc. identifies them as coming from a desktop machine is confusing some sites/CDNs, etc.?? Although that means all users of Verizon's Home Fusion service would have this problem and that doesn't seem to be the case.
I guess the weirdest thing of all is that if I can't connect to a site like say FB, if I just reboot then I can connect to FB again for awhile, until it decides to crap out again.
All Sound Gone From Internet Sites On Windows 8 Computer
Oct 8, 2013Yesterday I plugged in a headphone/microphone to use Dragon, a voice recognition software. It may be just a coincidence, but since then I haven't been able to hear any sound off the internet. I have a High definition audio device 5.1 surround speaker system that still plays mp3's, and movie DVD's, just fine through my speakers and/or my headphones. If I make a mistake in typing, I hear the error bell or computer sound through my speakers. However, if I go to youtube or some news outlet, or anything online, I hear no sound.
I've gone to my device manager and selected each of the sound devices and set them as the default device, but it doesn't work. I check the properties on each of the devices and get the response that the device is working properly. It is hard to argue with a computer, but I certainly disagree, because I still get no Internet sounds.
I'm running Windows 8. Intel Core i7-3770 CPU 3.40GHz with 32GB RAM. DirectX version 11.
Network / Sharing :: Deleting Unwanted WiFi Sites
Sep 26, 2013I am trying to delete some network connections that I have never used, how they came into being. They are NGSKM, TRENDnet and G4257
They don't appear in net show: netsh wlan show profiles
The only one that appears is ZFHL2, our local network.
Of course, they are not found if I try to delete them with: netsh wlan delete profile name="TRENDnet"
How do I delete them ?
Browsers/Mail :: Not Keeping Login Details For Different Sites - Win 8.1
Jun 10, 2014Ever since I upgraded from 7 to 8.1 the laptop has been progressively getting worse at keeping login details fort eh different sites I use regularly (like this one).
It is getting to be very very irritating to have to re enter my login detail when accessing forums Ebay etc etc... Have made sure I have saved cookies for the sites with CCleaner , made sure I have ticked remember this login and the site's remember this password but the problem like I said is getting beyond a joke.
I never had this problem with 7 and along with some of the other little niggles of 8.1 I am seriously thinking of reverting back to 7 although it does run slower.
Debugging :: BSOD From YouTube / Sites With Embedded Ads (New Computer)
Jul 17, 2014I just put together a computer yesterday, and while most things seem to be working fine, I've been having some problems with YouTube and certain websites that have embedded ads with animation. The computer either freezes up completely or sends me to a BSOD that cites the problem as WHEA_uncorrectable_error. It happens almost every time within a few seconds of the video starting. It also froze once just sitting on the desktop with only a Steam download in the background, but I haven't seen that happen again.
Oddly enough, I've run several games on Steam to see if it would have the same effect, but I haven't run into that problem yet while playing games. Netflix and Hulu also seem to work fine.
Nothing is overclocked. I got drivers for the video card and mobo from the company websites, although I'll admit that I don't know much about that. My report from the diagnostic tool is attached. My build is posted below.

Network / Sharing :: DNS Error Constantly Occurring - Some Sites Work Some Don't
Apr 3, 2014For the past month i have been getting disconnected from my favourite game guild wars 2, after researching the error code it has been linked back to the DNS error. i have restarted, factory reset the router, restarted windows, formatted windows, disabled and re-enabled the Ethernet Port on my computer but have had no success, sometimes restarting the router fixes the problem, and sometimes it doesn't.
I have changed the ipv4 connections to use the Google server addresses, but this did not fix the problem
I have also used the ipconfig/flushdns command which also does not work
The game client Steam will connect, but Team-speak 3 and other websites will not.

Desktop Freezes When Empty Recycle Bin
Dec 1, 2012When I right click the Recycle Bin and click Empty Recycle Bin, the desktop freezes: the desktop become unclickable; if I click anywhere on the desktop, it just gives me a "ding" sound.
Everything else works fine, like icons on the dock is clickable, I can go to start and open an app etc.
The way I can empty the recycle bin is open the recycle bin and empty it within the folder.
Windows 8.1 - Task Status Is Always Empty
Aug 26, 2014Following this Windows 8.1 refuses to sleep thread I went to look for the task mentioned and I see no tasks have run. It has been this way since day one of this computer and doesn't matter what time period I select (last hour, 24h, 7 days, 30 days).
Why would it show no tasks, when clearly I have some set to run and they do run and complete? Plus there are other tasks that I didn't set that run as well.
Just Empty Blue Space After PC Was Idle
Dec 11, 2012My taskbar with toolbars: address, desktop, links etc becomes just empty blue space after PC was idle. nothing on it and I have to restart to be able to get it back again. Also. in that "state" I can choose application from Start screen but it does not open. Just show on that empty taskbar. When I click it, little picture of it pop up above taskbar but it can only be closed. Nothing shows as open on Alt+F4 or in upper left corner, even when I open or better say click on all aps on Start screen. All I pinned on taskbar disappears also.

Recently i noticied that in Disk Managment there are multiple recovery partitions that are stated as 100% free (they are not visible when opening My Computer). (I recently did a system recovery from recovery utility, don't know if it's relevant to my "problem").
Is it expected to have these partitions? And if yes, why they seem to be 100% free?
Black Desktop And Empty Start Menu?
May 28, 2014So I rebooted my computer after a crash, and after logging in the screens were completely black and my mouse & keyboard was unresponsive. I did Crtl + Alt + Del which brought up the correct menu, and after I exited it I was put onto the start menu, which was blank. Just like the login screen and lock screen, the colour and design had been reset (to purple, if it matters). Leaving the start menu presents me with the black desktop again, but the start bar at the bottom is present and after a while the clock, wifi, volume etc. loads in the bottom right as well as a User Profile Service notification telling me I've been "signed in with the default profile for the system". There are no pinned apps either, although FileZilla Server loads up after a minute and that is on the start bar now. Also, immediately after leaving the start menu, a "Location is not available" dialogue box comes up with the error message:

Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.
When I click OK on that, the Recycle Bin appears on my desktop. Opening the recycle bin displays the same message as before, and it does have all of the recycled files and folders inside. From here I can navigate through my folders, although the libraries option on the left side is empty (it normally has my documents, videos, user folder etc.). If I navigate to D:UsersAdministrator, my desktop folder is there with everything inside. I can also type Google (or presumably anything after http://) into the explorer bar which opens up Google Chrome, as well as open cmd and Control Panel by typing each one in. Navigating to C:Windowssystem32configsystemprofile shows that Desktop isn't actually present any more.
I've tried using both elevated cmd (net user /add Username) and control panel to create a new user, but the control panel button "Add or remove user accounts" button is unresponsive, and although cmd gives me a successful operation message (and tells me the account already exists if I do the same command again), it doesn't show up on the logon screen. I've tried making the user through cmd while logged in to administrator, using the Advanced Startup Options command prompt (the one that uses X:) and using safe mode with command prompt. The right-corner-menu > Settings > Change PC Settings button is unresponsive. I can't use the built-in administrator account because after I similar occurrence before, I've been using the built-in admin, which is the one that is now broken. None of my older accounts show up, either.
Also, after a few restarts and many attempted fixes (mainly automatic repair etc.), it now plays the whole patronising "We're getting your PC ready" video whenever I try to log in, and then it displays the start menu and bar (so I don't need to do the Crtl + Alt + Del step).
Folders In External HD Are Full But Shown As Empty

Win 8.1 On Reboot Like Newly Installed - Empty Metro
Nov 25, 2013I have an issue with Windows 8.1 Pro x64. I have upgraded from 8. About every 5-6 days after I turn on my laptop, Windows 8 behaves like it was just newly installed. By that I mean that after I login into the system I get a screen with "We're setting things up for you" and messages about installing apps from the store. After that finishes, an empty metro screen is displayed. Then, after I choose to reboot, system starts OK.
This does not happen every reboot, approximately on every fifth/sixth. I find it extremely annoying when I have to wait about 5 minutes just to do another reboot. And what if one day it does not reboot correctly from the empty screen?
Empty Folders With Vanishing Files Mostly Documents
Jun 9, 2014Over the years I've tried to save all my documents. This means that they have been copied from folder to folder and computer to computer (whatever was before Windows 95) probably mostly through external storage. However, some of these were saved directly to the 2nd internal hard drive D: of Windows 8 may be included, but I'm not certain.
I believe all of the folders are present, most of which are identified by date. However, many of the folders are completely empty. I cannot see a pattern as to which folders. This seems to involve mostly older folders, (and this may mean that it is more likely that they have been through a USB device) but not all of the older folders are empty. More recent ones are also empty. Otherwise, I cannot identify any specific documents, only that large numbers of folders are empty.
Updating Empty Folders When Skydrive Not Enabled
Feb 15, 2014since installing I now have a notification in the systray saying that " Files are up to date, last updated xxx minutes ago When I click on that notification icon, it takes me to a Sky drive folder, and within it is a documents, favorites, public, and shared favorites folders. When I double click those folders, there are no files within them.I do not have Skydrive set to upload, or sync, any files. So then should I be getting these notifications? Why would it show updating empty folders when Sky drive is not enabled? Is there a setting somewhere I should change.

I'm trying to open my Music folder on my desktop or my whole D drive (with tons of items on it like game installations, music, pictures etc.) but the window that opens is empty and writes in it "This folder is empty". I can't acces the documents on my D drive. When I search for anything on the drive, it finds it and I can use it (pictures open, songs play). So the files are actually there but just aren't loading. I've made sure that the files are not hidden and I've already scanned for malware.
External Seagate Spins Up When Empty Recycle Bin

Nov 13, 2013So, I did a refresh of Windows 8 which created Windows.old. I could later delete all the folders in it but for a few. Although I deleted all the files, I ended up with a few folders in Windows.old. I am unable to delete it now and it shows "Error 0x80070091: The directory is not empty."
I have tried 10's of solution available on internet and on your website. Nothing works
Note: I am able to change the location, name of the folder and the sub folders. The only exception is happening when I cut and paste it in an external drive, it just copies whereas if I paste it back in any other folder, it cuts and pastes!

deleting the D:volume partition is easy but then Im left with empty partiton , I want to extend this to c: so that my c:418 goes back to 464gig.

File Explorer - Shows Folder Empty When Opened
Jan 18, 2013Opening a folder in file explorer often shows it empty when I know it isn't! Also if I try to delete the "empty" folder, explorer reports it has found x number of files and is preparing to delete! If I quit that and look in the folder there are the files.
I also have issues with file explorer opening a folder and apparently scanning the contents - a green bar very slowly creeps across regardless of how frequently I've looked in the folder earlier in the day.
I have six drives mostly pretty full with a mixture of thousands of small files and thousands of very large images. Windows 8 file explorer seems to have problems coping.
Windows 8 Multi Boot Partition Says Its Empty But Has Files?
Feb 12, 2014I recently tried to install Ubuntu 12.10, and lost access to Windows 7 and 8.1, after a LOT of looking for bootable disks and stuff, I did fix it.
After recovering the operating systems (I had to delete Ubuntu partitions and then fix the Windows 7 bootloader, because there was 6 primary partitions), the Windows 8.1 partition says its 10.0GB and empty, but when I double click on it, you can see the files inside.
This is bad, because when I try to boot in Windows 8, it gets to the login screen after a long boot time, then it just shows the time, battery, and internet status, and the rest is a blue screen, implying its broken. I found out this is because some OS files are missing, which might be related to the above paragraph. I have lots of paid software in Windows 8, and it was LOTS of downloading, so I dont want to wipe the drive, or have to touch the data, only be able to boot into Windows 8 again.
