Debugging :: BSOD While Idle In The Middle Of Night
Sep 15, 2014
I'm using this laptop and recently my system's been BSODing while it's idle in the middle of the night.
Wanna add a note that there's an old minidump from august which I never looked into, and that I've recently moved to a different country with the laptop (if that changes anything).

I walk away from my computer for a bit and come back to a BSOD. This happens quite regular. I have run my system both stock and highly overclocked. When it started BSODing on me I put it back to stock to see if that worked but it has not worked.

My system currently has a blue screen around twice a day from what seems like a driver issue. I have tried driver verifier, swapped out the GPU since I thought most things pointed to that and did a fresh install. The only thing I have left to do is update my motherboard bios. I am questioning if the GPU was even the issue since I still got a crash... Below is the guide to Driver Verifier I used so you can see what steps I took. I am at my wits end and am not to great at pointing out what driver crashed or whats left to do after the OS install.
Driver Verifier-- tracking down a mis-behaving driver.

I constantly have my laptop restarted when I walk away from it for a bit, it's been happening for the last couple of months now. On the occasions that I have caught it restarting I saw a glimpse of the BSOD. The last error mesage that I saw on BSOD was MEMORY_MANAGEMENT.

computer will have reset itself. I've started it back up and it's said:
C:WindowsMinidump51414-29 Memory.dmp
It always boots up just fine and runs okay, and doesn't restart while I'm working on it.

was in the process of installing 8.1 on my home pc when the power shut off in my house. Of course this would happen. I upgraded from Vista using the digital upgrade thing early last year, and since I have no physical cd/flash drive available, is it possible to reinstall windows 8 prior to the loading screen?
When i try to start it up it and get an error with bad_system_config_info so something got corrupt when my power went out. It goes through trying to repair it then suggests I system restore however it just gets stuck at the Windows 8 loading screen for 20 minutes now. I don't have anything on the pc i can't do without, i Just want to reinstall it/boot into a safe mode so I could reinstall windows that way.

I have Windows 8 x64 Professional.
I customized my power plan (High Performance) so that the monitor sleeps after 5 minutes of inactivity. However, the monitor doesn't actually sleep. The LCD's colors turn to black, instead of the panel/back-light turning off. The mouse cursor also stays idle in the center of the screen.
In the advanced power options, I've made sure sleep happens after 5 minutes, and "Adaptive Brightness" is off.

I am having a strange problem on Windows 8 as of late. Just in the middle of work the mouse pointer freezes in its tracks and there is nothing doing, but to restart. And then all goes on well as if nothing' happened. Today, I had the same problem, but this time the the mouse seems to revive after a minute so and after a while it again freezes up.
I looked it up in the Event Manager and find a constant error which seems to have been going on for sometime. The error is always Event ID: 16385
Code:
Log Name: Application
Source: Microsoft-Windows-Security-SPP
Date: 17-Aug-14 15:13:17
Event ID: 16385
Task Category: None
Level: Error
[Code] ....
I wonder if the error has anything to do with the mouse freezing up the works or is it unrelated. The mouse battery is fully charged and the drivers are are the latest (according to Microsoft) and the manufacturer says this is only version, therefore neither of these can be the problem.
OS: Windows 8
Mouse and Keyboard Set: SilverCrest (wireless)

I just purchased a laptop with Windows 8 installed on it. I have one problem. I know if you hit one of the corners of the screen the right toolbar becomes activated and is displayed. My problem is that it tends to be displayed when I move the cursor in the middle of the screen. When it is displayed I have to deactivate it in order to continue what I was doing. I do not mind the toolbar if it is not so sensitive.

In windows 8 my Core i5 3750K CPU does not reduce its clock-speed when idle. As I run an OC of 4,3Ghz, it gets pretty hot in idle, allthough it do reduce vCore a little.
Dualbooting with Windows 7, and there the cpu clocks down just fine works, so not a BIOS problem.
Seems to have some small HW issues with Windows 8. CPU at full speed and really slow USB3 performance.

I upgraded my OS to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 from the store yesterday. Everything seems to be working fine - no lags or freezes, but I noticed that my PC doesn't drop below 30-35% in idle, also it doesn't downclock (balanced power settings) - it used to drop to 0.8ghz in idle and be like 1-4% in idle before the update, and now it's permanent 3.2ghz and over 30% in idle. I noticed that Service Host: Local Services and Service Host: System Services in the task manager are draining over 10% CPU each, something that didn't happen before.

My taskbar with toolbars: address, desktop, links etc becomes just empty blue space after PC was idle. nothing on it and I have to restart to be able to get it back again. Also. in that "state" I can choose application from Start screen but it does not open. Just show on that empty taskbar. When I click it, little picture of it pop up above taskbar but it can only be closed. Nothing shows as open on Alt+F4 or in upper left corner, even when I open or better say click on all aps on Start screen. All I pinned on taskbar disappears also.

I just bought a brand new Lenovo U310 Touch and so far I absolutely love it. The only thing I noticed that struck me as odd is that when I look in Task Manager it shows that I am using around 60% of my available memory, but there are no processes taking up anywhere near that much. I also have a desktop I built and its memory usage is nominal when idle so I know this isn't a "standard feature" or anything.
EDIT (5/4/13) - Finally figured it out, it was the ExpressCache program, used a couple tutorials to isolate where the memory leak was and from there I found it was in the running files of ExpressCache, I just went to Uninstall Programs, hit "Repair" on the program and now everything is all nice and happy, no more memory leak.

when i leave my system in idle for an hour or two, it reboots without any BSOD, or any error messages. My rig is 5 year-old, and always worked perfectly with Windows 7, without any strange issues.
When i'm working, Win 8.1 works absolutely perfect for long long hours.. rendering video, playing games etc.. i never found a BSOD or random reboot.I did the following to try to solve this problem, without success:
- Changing my PSU.
- Changing the Win 8 energy plan to Maximum Performance (hard disks never turn off)
- Memtest for 16+ hours, without any error.
My guess is there are some Windows 8.1 feature that doesn't fit well with my mobo, but i can't find it. I have also the same version of Win 8.1 installed in another older rig, and works 100% perfect during days (working and idle). This is my problematic rig:
Gigabyte P55-A UD6, BIOS F12c Beta (the last available from Gigabyte)
G-Skill Ripjaws DDR3 2000 8Gb (2x4Gb)
Intel Core i7 860 Lynnfield
Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 3GB GDDR5
Corsair Force 3 180 Gb (firmware updated)
Creative X-Fi Titanium

I've encountered a sleep-related problem on my tower (desktop). Some time after a long idle (~12-16 hours), my machine just goes to sleep. I require this machine to be up 24/7, so I've tried many things; inevitably, my computer just decides to take a nap. I've even enabled wake-on-lan so I can wake it up remotely when I'm not nearby. Attached are my system specs/info, service culprits (non-microsoft), and attempted fixes.
systeminfo.txt is output from systeminfo
AidaReport.txt is a full summary of my machine
SleepEvents.txt contains the sleep event itself and the events that always seem to follow or precede it.
Running Non-Microsoft Services:
Adobe Acrobat/Flash Player update Services
AMD External Events Utility
Apple Mobile Device
Bonjour Serivce
Evolve Service (Evolve Gaming Client)
FileZilla Server FTP server
Fitbit Connect Service
iPod Service
Mozilla Maintenance Service
OpenVPN Service
Splashtop Remote Service
Splashtop Software Updater
Steam Client Service
VMware Authorization Service
VMware USB Arbitration Service
VMware Workstation Server
Things I've tried:
Disabled all sleep related settings, including hybrid sleep and fast startup. Power options are set to never sleep on all profiles (power plans). I've tried Caffeine (F15 every 59 seconds) and Insomnia (SetThreadExecutionState).
Originally, my computer was going to sleep with the reason Sleep Button pressed, and it looked like it was my keyboard (Razer DeathStalker), so I disabled the hardware sleep button, then the reason changed to Application API (with some delay between the 2 problems).
All windows updates have been applied, including the latest 8.1.1.

Basically about 1 month ago a good friend of mine purchased a brand new acer desktop computer, I haven't got the exact model to hand as he lives 200 kilometers from me and he's not tech savvy at all, however, from what I remember of it, it's windows 8 x64, 4gb ram and i3 processor, so not bad at all.
When he got it I set it up for him as in just put in the regional setting etc.. and ran through the initial set up and all went well. I installed all his programs and all was good.
So about a month on he rang me and said his computer is just freezing randomly always when it's left idle for 10 minutes or so and this happens all day every day.
..... Ran hitman pro which said all was clean.
.....Ran chkdsk /f which was fine
.....Went into power options and set both screen and sleep to never
....Ran sfc /scannow which said it found some corrupt file but could not fix all (ran this from command prompt from inside windows as admin)
...Tried a system restore to the 14th of this month but said it couldn't do it as it may be corrupt but it let do a restore to a later date but still the same issue.
This is only a new pc, so if I can't sort the problem rather than doing a fresh install and checking all the hardware internally I'm wondering if he should bring it back to the shop as it's only a month old, or would I be better of doing the fresh install ?

My Windows 8.1 pro desktop system,is going to sleep after a few mins of staying idle.I was having windows 7 before this and I never faced any issue. It was recently that I upgraded my OS to windows 8.1 pro. This is a clean install of the OS.
By staying idle, I mean, I am reading some newspaper or some pdf file or something like that online without any activitiy on the keyboard. After a few mins, it automatically goes into sleep mode. This is making me mad, as I could be in the middle of something while reading documents and it goes into sleep.
In the power options, I have changed it to High Performance plan, I have verified that, "Turn of Display" and "Put the computer to sleep" options are "Never". When I click on "Advanced Power Settings" , I can see that , under sleep, "sleep after" is never. Allow Hybrid sleep is "Off". Hibernate after is "Never".
I just wanted to add, that the event viewer shows the following entries...
The system is entering sleep.
Sleep Reason: System Idle
The kernel power manager has initiated a shutdown transition.
The system firmware has changed the processor's memory type range registers (MTRRs) across a sleep state transition (S4). This can result in reduced resume performance.
The system has returned from a low power state.
Sleep Time: 2014-06-21T05:51:33.970250600Z
Wake Time: 2014-06-21T05:52:23.968079800Z
I also tried to create a new power profile but this did not work. I ran sfc scanow and also fixed errors. I have all latest windows updates. I have also tried DISM
I can't even read something without fear and I have to keep moving my mouse every minute and I can't even concentrate.

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro on a Desktop PC.
My issue is this:
My PC is on 24/7 previously on every version of Windows when I walk away, the screen turns off after 30mins of inactivity, the PC stays on and when I return, I simply moved the mouse and within 2 - 3 seconds the monitor was back on, and I was where I left it.
On Windows 8.1 that sometimes happens, but 90% of the time what is happening, when I return to my PC, I move the mouse and nothing happens, anything I press on keyboard etc, monitor stays off on black screen, if I turn the monitor off by the button and back on, it just stays black, the only way I can get back to my Desktop is to restart the PC!!
I changed several power settings around, disabled password on idle setting, googled many things and tried and its still doing it. The PC is still on fans etc, but doesn't respond.
Weird thing is, it did it today when I was watching a movie on my PC connected media server downstairs (app is PS3 Media Server used with a WDTV Live Hub) I came to use the PC and it was black screen, I went back downstairs and could still access all my files on the media server, so the PC is still up and fully running when it does this, but I just can't get the monitor to display anything other than black screen, again on a reboot everything is fine again.
To summarise, I have power setting to turn off display after 30mins, usually a nudge of the mouse brings the monitor to life, this is not happening, I can only get back to desktop via hard PC reboot.

My gpu is not downclocking while on the desktop. It's pegged at a base clock of 1,110 Mhz, drawing load voltage and this idling about 10 C higher than before in Windows 7. A reboot usually fixes it.
I dont know what in Windows 8 is causing it. I have nvidia control panel set to Adaptive power management, what else is there that would effect this? I can't think of anything else, I must be missing something.

So, yesterday is the first time this has happened. It has never happened before. The first time it happened yesterday, I Was watching some TV shows online, and then I got the PAGE_FAULT(...) error code.
I tried running my Anti_Malware scanner to see if that could pick something up. It crashed again just as it started.
So I tried Advanced SystemCare. Again, same problem.
And it just keeps happening.
I tried refreshing my computer to see if that would do anything, but it crashed during that too.
I ran the SF Diagnostic program and I have the .DMP files (But I can't seem to upload them. Maybe I'm trying to upload the wrong ones, I don't know.)
Anyway, these are the specs of my system. HP ENVY DV-7 7270CA (less than 8 months old) running Windows 8 (as I wasn't able to update to 8.1. I got the 0x80000004 error, or whatever it was. I can't remember exactly), 8GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM, Intel Core i7 3630QM, NVIDIA GT630M (2GB) GPU, and a 1TB 5400RPM HDD. Don't know what brand, I didn't check.

-Ram-TEST lasted nine hours and successfully completed
-Change the motherboard (ASUS Sabertooth 990FX From R2.0 to MSI 890FX-GD70, the latter shall use at this time, the other I sold it)
-Changed video card (ATI 6870 Updated NVIDIA 760)
-Replaced SSD where the system resides, had a value SMART wrong, incorrectly replaced by Samsung (EVO 250GB)
-Analyzed by-DUMP bluescreenanalizer and semrpe the same file with the same bug tails
-Windows-formatted 3 times already
The temperatures are good .. I also have a Corsair H100i and a fairly spacious case that allows good ventilation (CM Storm Trooper)
This is my components:
CPU: AMD FX8350
RAM: 16GB (4 x 4) G SKILL 1866 MHz CAS 8
SSD: 250GB Samsung EVO
Video Card: Zotac 760 amp edition!
HDD: 3TB WD, 250GB WD
Motherboard: MSI 890FX-GD70
Sound Card: Asus Xonar Phoebus ONLY
Case: CM Storm Trooper Black
Win 8.1 x64 Original
I repeat that I do not overclock, the frequencies are those of series
Now I'll explain when I turn on my pc at COLD (the day after practically) happens to me .. and not always! However, if you reboot immediately after work PERFECTLY, and for hours and hours! without presenting problems or other, and even under stress. The next day, however, having been off the night it happens it happens .. this blue screen without doing anything specific! Coincidentally, sometimes even if I do nothing on windows just turned on, or a complete on the internet, or other, causally!

I started a thread a while ago and You Fellas diagnosed the problem was the faulty RAM. So I bought and replaced using 2 other slot of memory that wasn't used before (i have 4 slots). It took some time, but sadly it started crashing again. 4 dmps and routine stuff attached. It happens usually in games but it happens sometimes in desktop so its random for me. What component or anything else is corrupted.
