Could Not Find Recovery Environment
Sep 15, 2014
Last week, I purchased an Acer Aspire v5-473g Windows 8.1 pre-installed laptop. The first thing I did is to partitioning the hard drive with EaseUS Partition Master. After that, I want to create a USB recovery drive but I found out that I was unable to do so.
When I launch the recovery drive program build in in Windows, I found out that the "Copy the recovery partition from the PC to the recovery drive" option has been grey out. If I continue the program, it would shows "We can't create a recovery drive on this PC. Some required files are missing".
In addition, I also found out that I was unable to reset nor refresh Windows 8.1.
One thing I am sure is that I did not mess up with the all those system reserved OEM partitions( including the one push reset partition) when I partition the drive. Those partitions should be present and intact.
After doing some research on the internet, some say that I need to mount the system recovery image (the "Push Button Reset RecoveryImage install.wim") using the "reagentc.exe". But I notice that I was not able to use reagentc.exe.
When I input reagentc.exe /info, reagentc.exe /disable, or reagentc.exe /enable, or all other commands using "reagentc.exe", it gives error: operation failed 3.
So how can I now create a USB recovery drive, or how can i perform reset now?

Although I have been able to make a full disk image using the built in "system image" option, I can not find any way to restore it. The recovery options only point to system restore and refresh PC. I'm navigating to <control panel> and then <file history> to access the recovery options. I can not find any restore from system image option anywhere.
Am I missing something, or is it deliberately missing in the Enterprise editions ? If so is there any way I can restore the backup image ?

I have an Asus S200E and I had been messing with linux and trying to install it alongside windows 8.1 with no joy. After a while I gave up but i've had a few issues with my laptop and wanted to either refresh or reset it.
When I try to refresh I get a message saying that the drive is locked and when I try to reset I am told the recovery partition is missing. I guess I must have done something when attempting to install linux that has caused this problem however when I open up the partition manager the recovery partitions are all still there.

I turned on Bitlocker on three new Windows 8.1 laptops and saved the 48-digit recovery keys and associated identifiers, but I forgot to indicate which laptops they are associated with. Is there any way to find the identifiers/recovery keys on my laptops so I can document this? Or do I have to decrypt the laptop drives, turn off Bitlocker, and start all over again to generate new identifiers/recovery keys? My only options under Manage Bitlocker are Suspend protection, Back up your recovery key, and Turn off BitLocker.

I've been dual-booting Windows 8 Pro and Windows 7 Ultimate, but a while back my Windows 8 kind of went "South" and wouldn't boot at all (I got an error message that a device was "not attached"). I have a recent system image on an external USB hard drive, but when I boot to "system recovery" using my repair disk it can't seem to find my USB drive at all.
The tutorials here mention installing a SATA driver to access disks that are not recognized, but this doesn't seem to be the case.

After running win 8.1 upgrade I occasionally get msg. that system is updating PE but it never completes as far as I can tell. Shows as running for about 15 minutes with 20 minutes remaining. Update box disappears but then I notice TOO QUICKLY that there is an error msg. when I shutdown.
Is there a way to verify that PE ran properly?
Is there a way to view error msg's on shutdown? They flash too quickly to read them.

Goal: run both windows 7 and windows 8.1 native from VHDX (currently only success with Windows 8.1 on vhdx and win7 vhd)
I have a windows 8.1 installed in the system and rebooted into a command prompt, created a vhdx image, converted to GPT, and then install windows 7 on this vhdx (both with and without KB982018 integrated). The install went through (copying files etc) and it then rebooted itself and finish off the reset of the installation. After it rebooted it the boot menu is the old style black and white (which is fine), and choose win7 vhdx to finish off the installation. However an error comes up - An unexpected error has occurred.
Having no luck therefore instead of installing to a VHDX I now boot up with the win7SP1 USB and install onto a VHD instead. Everything went well and booted into windows 7 (expected). I then install KB980218 and then it rebooted itself, again everything is ok. I then booted back into windows 8, converted the windows 7 from VHD to VHDX and set the sector size to 4096 as per How to Convert a VHD File into VHDX. Boot entry has also been updated to vhdx instead of vhd.
I now try to boot to this new win7 vhdx, and instead of getting an unexpected error, it booted into a graphical screen and ask for repairing the window. (which means it's unsuccessful).

best configuration for a home network if I am using a mixture of different computers, including Win 7, 8, and a new-ish Mac? The Mac has Lion.
If Macs are compatible with Homegroups or Workgroups or Domains? I am a little rusty on my understanding of their differences exactly.
I also have a router that I am planning on using with a network drive option for an external HDD. I have a couple mobile devices as well but I'm not very worried about their compatibility.

I have a problem which started recently. The problem is that everything closes unexpectedly. I am using the classic desktop environment to use this system and all the 'apps' I use a classing Windows programs.
Randomly all of the programs that are running on the machine close down without warning (And I mean ALL of them, even explorer.exe). I know that this has not been caused by a recent installation of a program as I have not installed anything recently. I also checked the computer with an Anti-Virus software as that could have been a cause but there wasn't anything.

Aside from deleting the tile from the start screen and not moving your mouse to the bottom left corner to show it, is there any way to uninstall the desktop completely so that when Windows Defender is opened up, there is nothing underneath it? I thought the point of Windows 8 was to have a pure tile experience without desktop exposure. I did try adding Defender as a tile to the start screen but it still opened up within the desktop.

If you have a recovery drive - that includes the recovery partition - made on one computer, but have a toshiba laptop with a bad drive (but the recovery partition is ok), can you replace/copy the partition on the recovery drive with the recovery partition from the bad laptop HD?
My friend's laptop would not boot, and would not factory recover, reset, or refresh. I tried to clone the hard drive before I started messing with the disc. It would not clone, but I was able to copy the recovery partition to a USB drive.
He never make recovery discs, so could not re-install, but I can borrow the recovery drive that my aunt made for her laptop.

I am trying to create recovery discs from "Dell backup and Recovery application" however when i was asked to insert the second DVD,the optical drive keeps rejecting the DVD. The application will not continue to burn the second DVD and appears to be frozen. I tried with different brands/makers of DVD and also -/+ R. Unfortunately .Issue remains. I was able to find this article 593906 Published on 2013-01-21 ( relative link [URL]... ).
Although i have done the updates ,i am still not able to create recovery discs !! Current Issue: after inserting the 3rd Disc application gives the following message "Dbr.exe -No disc found" and stays there and rejects the DVD. I spoke with Dell's Greek Support team. I was told that warranty does not cover sw support even if my unit is less than a week old. Furthermore i was informed that although "Dell backup and recovery" application says DELL is not actually a Dell product thus they can't support it. They suggested my to use windows 7 file recovery instead (which needs at least 8 DVDs !).
(Model : inspiron 15 3521) .

Right now I am on Win 8.1 and I plan on upgrading my PC.
Would I be able to re-use my product key? I hear that OEM ones do no allow this.
So how can I find out if my Win 8.1 is an OEM?

Why can't I find the update in the Store? 2 possible reasons are listed in the article:
1) Your PC needs another update, KB 2871839, After checking for this update and not seeing it I still received the 8.1 update via Windows store anyway & downloading now.
2)Some editions of Windows 8 don't support the free update to Windows 8.1.

I have a lot of files who are stored into folders (~ 2-3K worth of folders with 2-20 files in each folder) and I need to search in each one to see if there are any files that are similar in name. None will be exactly the same so I need to only compare the first 10 characters and if there are 2 files that have the same characters, then I need to have them displayed so I can decide if I should delete one. The problem with commercial duplicate detectors is they match the entire name or the CRC of a file which in this case will be different.

I just bought a new computer with W8 installed. This is a big step from XP that I've been running for quite a while. I had two drives (both 500Gb) in the old box, and I'd like to use them in the new. When I try the old drive with boot tracks as an internal - the new box has three spaces for HDD internally - the computer won't even boot. Once I remove the drive everything is back to normal. I have a USB3 external drive case that I installed the same drive in, and, although W8 recognizes I have a USB3 device connected, it's as if there's nothing inside. I've tried doing what I'm told in Devices and Printers (right-click, etc.) but still nothing. The one thing I do see is "Drive E:" in a shaded box to the right of the description, but I can't click on it. Since the drive has five drive assignments (C: through G, I would think whatever happens those assignments would show up in a description of the drive. I don't get anything. I would think as long as I don't try to boot from the old drive (via boot from external, etc) the boot tracks on the drive would not have any meaning - right?
I would like to be able to use some of the software I've downloaded in the past and installed on the XP computer. That's the main reason for trying to use the drive. All the software I downloaded is located in one of the virtual drives (G, and I want to copy off those that are of value to me now.

I upgraded to Windows 8 from XP a week ago and have not found the differences too difficult.
However, I have fiddling about for hours trying to find a way to have more than one window to view.
What I am trying to do is view my electric/gas & at same time I have my excel spreadsheet open on top, so I can input figures. In XP I was able to to do this.
In Windows 8, I seem to be permanently in full screen view & keep losing previous windows and I do not have tabs in the task bar or anything else to say what is open. Have I missed some setting? Controlling the windows.
