May 21, 2014

I was using my Windows 8.1 Computer when checking Outlook E-Mails, when the Website Fonts suddenly became smaller, the Websites as well. Obviously a settings issue. how to restore Fonts normal size ?.

These types of problems usually happen whenever there's a Windows update....

Does the Windows 8.1 Update 1 occur automatically or do I have to purchase something ?. Are these updates equal to the old 'Service Packs' ?.

Determine Which Program Generated A File?

Jun 3, 2013

I've had this problem for awhile, finding strange but not necessarily harmful files, and wondering which program created them, so I can determine if they're safe to delete. I would have to install a program that monitors/records all files written to the HDD. Unless there is another way.

How To Pin File Or Website To Start Screen

Nov 1, 2012

Playing around with Win 8 and found that it's not easy to pin a file or a web site (if you're not using IE) to the new start screen. Some have suggested downloading a nice little utility that will do the job, but I always try to avoid having a lot of single purpose, rarely used utilities.

Here's a way to accomplish the same task that I discovered by some trial and error.

Go to the desktop. Create a shortcut to an app (firefox if you want to pin a web site, excel if you want to pin a spreadsheet, etc.), giving the shortcut the name of the file or web site you want to pin to the start screen.

Once the shortcut to the app is created, right click on the shortcut, click properties. Go to the target line and add a space, then within quotes add the website or the file you want to access (if a file, add the entire file path and file name).

Click Apply
Right click the shortcut and you will now see the "Pin to Start" option. Click this option.
You can now delete the shortcut on the desktop (unless you want to keep the shortcut on the desktop and the start screen).
Go to the start screen. You will see the new shortcut which executes with a single click or touch.

Examples of a website shortcut Target line and file shortcut Target line are shown below.

"C:Program Files (x86)Mozilla Firefoxfirefox.exe" ""

"C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice12EXCEL.EXE" "C:UsersUserNameDocumentsExcelFileFolderSampleFile.xlsx".

Debugging :: BSOD When Entering Website

Dec 6, 2013

Unfortunately I forgot all my BSOD analysis skills, so I'll give you the chance. I just bought an ASUS Zenbook for studies, which is very pleasant. Though, today when I visited a website called The Verge, I got a BSOD. Earlier today when I visited the site, it froze for a second or two.

Usually it happens when the computer is running on the battery. I experienced a sudden shutdown when it's on battery, which is notable imo.

Anything you can pull off this one dump?

Browsers/Mail :: Can't Access Website

I can't access a website which I know 100% is working because the owner is a musician with hundreds or more visits a day. I can't access it on either chrome, IE11 or firefox from any of the three computers on our home network.

What could the common link be? Have I been blocked from the website or a router issue?

Browsers/Mail :: How To Get Title Bar On Website Application

May 6, 2013

I go to a website ([URL]....) to use their application, and I need to drag the window across to a second monitor. Initially the title bar was shown, for a few days, but now it has disappeared, so I can't drag the window. I recently installed Windows 8 so I've been personalizing it (and trying to learn it!!), and likely set something to open the screen in that fashion, but I can't find a setting where the title bar is shown. I have other machines that run win7 and Vista, and the title bar is shown. I need your expertise!

Windows 8.1 - Website Automatically Loads Next Page?

Jun 25, 2014

I just went to a web site that I have been going to for years, and I was using the 'page down' key as I often do. I got to the end of the page, and I saw a "flash" - loading page, at the bottom of the screen, and the next page automatically loaded. I didn't have to click on "next". I just continued to "hit" the 'page down' key.

Is this the new normal, maybe coming, or just something unique to that web site. Because I like it. Using Firefox, windows 8.1

I have made a few changes to speed up Firefox that you see on Google in the "about:config" area. And I have added the "Fastest Fox" add-on.

If there is some setting I can do that would apply to "all" websites, I sure would like to do that.

Browsers/Mail :: Specific Website Blocked On Windows 8.1

May 29, 2014

This is an odd little problem, but I can't access DeviantArt on my HP Laptop.

A little history: I bought the laptop new. It had Windows 8 64 bit installed, and I immediately upgraded to 8.1, and at that time, I remember browsing the site looking for desktop wallpaper. Since then I upgraded with the Spring update, and any other update Windows gives me, so the laptop is up to date. I use FireFox (up to date) as a browser, and when I recently tried to access the site, I got a 'Connection has timed out' screen. I opened IE, and got a 'The operation timed out' screen.

Things I have tried:

ISP / Router -
The laptop I'm having the trouble with is wireless. Using an older desktop (XP 32 bit SP3 as up to date as it will ever get) that is hardwired into the router, I have no problems accessing the site. Using my cell phone on the same WiFi (Android OS with Chrome browser), I'm also able to access it.
Using an online proxy/anonymizer, I was able to get the site site to on the laptop.

HOSTS file -
Since the 'Connection has timed out' is the same one I get from an ad page the HOSTS file has blocked, I removed it and replaced it with a blank one. No effect on either browser. I should also note that this is the exact same HOSTS file and FireFox version I'm using on the XP machine without issue.

Anti-Virus -
I use Avast's free version, also up to date. I turned it off, again with no effect, and, again, it's the same that's running on the XP.

I used the 'ipconfig /flushdns' to no effect. I even tried to use DeviantArt's IP address (, again, nothing.

I ran a scan with my AV, MalwareBytes, and Kaspersky's TDSSKiller with no results on any of them. All other websites that I normally go to are working fine.

Browsers/Mail :: Website Wants To Open Web Content On Computer

Jul 31, 2014

When opening any browser on my pc, I get a band of white across the page with the following message:

"A website wants to open web content using this program on your computer. This program does not have a valid digital signature that verifies the publisher."

Name: C:WindowsSystem32MacromedFlashFlashUtil_ActiveX.exe. Then there is a choice of 'Yes' in grey, or 'No' in blue. If I click on the 'No' box 3 times the band disappears. The string leads to an 'Adobe Flash Player Utility'.

If I open the box it gives me an alternative to 'Quit' or 'Uninstall'. When I 'Uninstall', it states that the program has been successfully uninstalled. However, the string is still there and the same problem exists when opening a browser.

When I right click on the last part of the string & select 'Delete', a box titled 'File Access Denied'. 'You require permission from TrustedInstaller to make changes to this file.

Tablets :: Acer Iconia W700 - Creating Website (Touch To Move And Copy Text Element)

Feb 25, 2014

I have got my Acer Iconia W700 and it is good.

But i have 1 problem that i am trying build a Tablet News website on Weebly and when i drag and drop text or other element in the website it is good but when i touch on the text it goes straight to the text editor instead of the bar where you can delete or move and copy the text element and i can't do it because i want to delete the text element and it is getting annoying and it happens with most elements as well.

I tried using it with my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7 pen to get to the bar of the element to delete/copy/move the element but it is the same.

Is there a mouse method on the Acer Iconia W700 because i think that would be better selecting without going to the text editor like the text element and goes to the bar(move/delete) elements in my website. is a drap and drop website builder that is very easy to use.
