Dec 1, 2012I have an Acer Aspire 5750G-2414G64MNKK and after the installation of Windows 8 I have a problem with the battery. In fact, when I turn on the PC, the battery indicator is not showing... I have to refresh devices in Device Manager. It happens randomly and it's very annoying. I have also tried to search an updated driver of the battery but windows update says that it is updated.

How To Access Boot Menu On Startup
Jul 10, 2014i'm using a Gateway Windows 8 64 Bit.
I know how to access the boot menu using the advanced troubleshooting option inside the computer. But, what if Windows 8 becomes unbootable and I cannot log into the machine? There is no boot menu option like Windows 7.
I have heard if Windows will not boot, it will display the advanced options automatically. Is this true?
Also, if I power down my system while it is booting up will I be able to access the boot menu on next startup?

Setup Installation :: How To Access Multiboot Menu From Windows 8 Startup
Jan 5, 2013I have been using Windows 7 Pro (64) for several years, and today installed a newly purchased Windows 8 Pro (64) OS. I looked on-line and found many articles on how to multi-boot back to Windows 7 after installing Windows 8, and believe I have done this correctly (more below), but when booting up I do not ever see a multi-boot menu, my system boots directly into Windows 8.
When installing Win 8, I booted from my CD/DVD drive with the Win 8 OS media in the drive. (I had previously reduced the volume of my Windows 7 drive and created a new partition that I called "Windows8". ). At the appropriate time in the Win 8 install I chose "Custom", then chose the newly created "Windows 8" partition, then proceeded with the Win 8 OS install. As mentioned above, I do not see the multi-boot menu when booting up, however when in Windows 8 I can see the Windows 7 drive in "Computer", so it was not over-written.

and am wondering if I should try Options 2 through 4 (1 of)? I build my own PCs so know something about PC's, bt not much about booting to an OS.....
Another options might be installing a third party boot manager, which I have not yet done.
my reason for getting back to Win 7 is to be able to use the PC while I learn and setup Win 8 over time. I went into this believing that getting a multi-boot capability would be very easy.

May 8, 2014I've got LATITUDE E7440 laptop with Win 8 Pro preinstalled. I need to disable driver signature enforcement in advanced options. I've read about how to do it in many places, but basically.. when I go to Troubleshoot -> Advanced options -> Startup Settings
And I push restart, menu for type of booting (below) doesn't appear. It just restarts as usual. Can I get to this menu in another way or why it doesn't appear?
I've got 4 laptops and this menu appeared only on one of them after restart. I've even reset it to its factory settings, but it didn't work out for me.

May 3, 2014I have installed Windows 8.1 Update 1 Pro Version a few weeks back on my desktop computer running 64 bit version of the OS. The OS was running perfectly fine until today when it started showing activation error. This is not right since I had installed Windows 8.1 Update 1 with a legit key since I have an MSDN subscription As you can see in below pic. It says that you can activate the Windows Machine now
Now I went ahead and tried to activate the windows by the key which I had intially activated and also with a new fresh different key which I haven't any activated windows machine yet. Both the steps didn't yield any fruitful results
1) When I hit "Activate" button
2) When I click "Error Details"
3) When I click "See Support info online" - Nothing happens
I have tried below troubleshooting steps but nothing happened yet

Jan 28, 2014I am having issues with Office 365... and frankly I would never sign up for a subscription service, but I got a great deal since I am a student on a multi-year subscription. I don't think my issue is subscription related, but is related to the office products.
I am running Windows 8.1 with all of the high priority updates installed, on my Acer Aspire desktop system with a I3 processor, maxed out memory, an SSD for OS/programs, and the original HDD for most data. The system came with Windows 7, and was upgraded to 8 shortly after I bought it, then 8.1 when it became available. I believe that the Windows 8 was loaded from DVD I burned as part of installing the SSD, and was a clean install. I mention this all in case there is some potential unedrlying issue based on the upgrade path.
I am running Avast (paid version) which runs clean when I scan.
The issue is that every office program I have tried fails almost immediately, when I either open a document, or if I select a document in Windows Explorer.
I have uninstalled Office completely then reinstalled.
Then I uninstalled, removed application's directory, cleaned a couple of registry keys manually, then reinstalled.
I have only installed one app that I can recall since the last time the office products worked for me, and that is Quicken Willmaker 2014. I have printed my will, so I will be uninstalling to see if it matters. Since it worked, I don't recall any Office related updates being downloaded.
Whether or not that program removal solves the issue, I plan to download and try CCleaner...
One other possible issue. It has always been flaky for me, but my IE 11 seems even more finicky than usual... This might be unrelated, or in my head, but I thought I would mention it in case it is relevant. I have not noticed any issues with other applications or functions.
Anything obvious that I am missing or that I should add to my to-do list?

May 23, 2014i'm running Windows 8 Home Premium.I'd like to increase my startup speeds, I already disabled as much as I can in Task Manager, msconfig, etc.In the Task Scheduler, it shows Metro Apps are taking CPU time at startup though. After much searching on the topic, I find very little about how to disable the Metro Apps from starting up. The main one I want to disable is "Mail, Calendar, People, and Messaging". I do not want to uninstall them, I just do not want them to do anything until I open them. It takes over 2 minutes of CPU time at startup for that one Metro App to fully load, and most of the time I never use it.
I have tried going into the Permissions of the App, and I disabled all of its Permissions to run in background of lock screen and everything. Still, it loads in Task Manager and takes CPU time.

Oct 16, 2013I'm running Win 8. On my brand new computer (Asus X 550BL) I've included several apps in my startup folder. Some of them run at system start and some don't.
My Firefox starts from startup ok. A batch file used to run my WAMP server works ok as well.
But my attempt to startup WinAmp fails to start. Manually clicking my WinAmp desktop shortcut works fine, but it won't 'auto' startup when that same shortcut is included the startup folder.
This all worked fine in Win 7.
All the startup folder items are set to run as a admin.

Windows 8 Flickering Start Menu - Error Code 80070490
Nov 3, 2013I'm having trouble with my HP laptop. I've had this happen before and I had to completely reset my laptop because of it.
Basically I went to log in this morning, it said my profile couldn't be found and signed me out. I then tried again to log in and the Start menu has been flickering continuously and I can't select anything, it has also 'lost' all of my stuff so it looks like a temporary profile..
I have tried googling for an answer and cannot find anything that works, when I try to 'refresh' my laptop via going to safe mode it comes up with the error code: 80070490. I've tried to do a 'clean boot' in safe mode but that won't work properly..

Windows Update Service Not Running / Possible Error With Startup
May 20, 2014Noticed that Microsoft Security Essentials had not received definition updates in 5 days. Tried to update manually through MSE interface and could not connect to server. Tried to find updates using Windows Update and received an error that the Windows Update Service failed to load and need to re-start.
Restarted - No results
Went to Administrative Tools > Services to restart the update service. - No Results
Downloaded the Fix-it from here: [URL] .... and these are the results.
Also, not sure if its related, but the startup sequence for my has been different for the last week. Below is the difference.
Normal Power On:
Power on > Dell Logo > Peripheral devices power on > Windows Logo > Windows Login Screen
New (and strange) Power On:
Power on > Dell Logo > Peripheral Devices power on > Windows Logo > Peripheral Devices power off and screen goes black > 5 second pause > Peripheral Devices Power On > Windows Login Screen

Nov 2, 2012I have windows 8 installed for just over a week now. Everything seems to work just fine untill today i found something that rather annoys me.
When in the start/metro menu you right click on the bottom right corner you will have the 'all apps' option. When i clicked on it a few days ago you go to see a list of all your installed apps, like it supposed to. But now when i click on it i just get a blank (in my case) green screen with nothing on it. Pressing the windows key will get me back at start.
Also when searching for apps (windows key+q) it seems like the searching freezes and crashes sending me back to the original start screen. I have the same problem on my laptop where i installed the same windows 8
I'm using the 32 bit version of Windows 8 pro.

Jun 4, 2014I've been suffering a high volume of BSODs - both before and after I switched hard drive last week.
I'm getting Kernel_Data_Inpage_Error on almost every first startup. In addition, I often get a Page Fault in Unpaged Area BSOD when gaming (primarily Max Payne 3) - dxgmms1.sys has been referenced on more than one of these occasions.

Notifications Not Showing From Apps In Right Hand Corner?
Apr 27, 2014except it works in 32 bit but not in 64 bit windows 8.1 update fresh install. Have checked the apps notification switches in PC settings and they are all on. The one I miss is the email notification telling me I have mail which appears to be enabled but test messages from gmail dont trigger notifcations in right hand top side of desktop.
One notification that does work is when I insert a USB it asks what to do with removable devices but thats the only notification I get.

Mar 29, 2014Over the last few days I built a new PC with ASUS A87 Pro MB, no PCIe cards, and Samsung ssd 840 Pro boot drive. Lots of changes on a daily basis. For a while, the FAST STARTUP hybrid boot was working. Then it stopped, and I'm trying to debug it.
When PAST STARTUP is enabled in power options, I get a repeatable Critical Error - Windows did not shut down properly, and the startup time is as long as it would be without FAST STARTUP enabled. There are no BSODS, and no apparent harm from the Critical Shutdown error.
