Accounts :: Rename Built-In Accounts

Feb 21, 2014

I read on the Malwarebyte's blog that they suggest you disable the built in Administrator and Guest accounts for security reasons. Those reasons being that with them enabled, potential hackers already have 2 usernames guessed for them.

But, I use the Guest account often on my home computer because I tend to have a lot of house guests. I don't usually disable the Administrator account either because I still use it on occasion.

So, here is a small tutorial on how to rename those accounts for some added security if you can't disable them.

-Open the 'Run...' box.Type "secpol.msc" and press 'Enter' or 'OK'.Navigate to Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options.
-The 5th and 6th entries are the names of the Administrator and Guest accounts respectively.
-Double click the entry for the account you want to rename and type the new name in the text box.
-Press 'Enter' or 'Apply' and close the windows.

Next time you try to login with the Guest or Administrator accounts, you will have to use the new username that you came up with.

Accounts :: Windows 8 - How To Rename User Account

May 5, 2013

So for some reason, windows 8 thought it would be funny to change my user name to Al Ex instead of Alex, AND since you can't have space on the address bar, the folder ended up calling Al.

This annoyed me a lot more than it should have, because i have tried changing the user name through control panel, but that just changes the display name, not the folder's name. How do i rename it?

Accounts :: Set Microsoft Account Same As Built-in Administrator

Mar 14, 2014

Windows 8.1 and I have noticed that even after setting my (online) Microsoft account as Administrator, and disabling UACP, many actions still require me to "Allow" them.

So my question is, can I tun that so called "Microsoft Admin Account" to behave just like built-in Administrator one so I don't get those annoying prompts ? If not, is there a way to make everything on my PC run as Admin ?

I know how to set Admin right on a per-app basis, but that's not what am looking for, as I am the only one using this PC. And want to keep using my "Online" account coz I sync a lot of things.

Accounts :: How To Change Picture For Built In Admin Account

Feb 28, 2014

My Windows 8.1 machine has only one interactive account - the built-in "administrator" account. It is just an internal file- and media-server without a monitor, which is accessed exclusively through Remote Desktop.

I would like to change the "user picture" associated with that built-in admin account. Trying to do it the "usual" way - through Control Panel -> User Accounts - does not work. Apparently, user picture selection is handled by a Metro app. And Metro apps are not launchable from the built-in admin.

Most likely there are workarounds. I can try using that hack that enables Metro apps under the built-in admin. Or I can add another interactive admin account and try changing the picture of the built-in admin from that other admin. I don't know whether any of these will work, I haven't tried yet.

But is there a more straightforward way to set the user picture for an account? Like copy the picture file to some folder or something like that?

Accounts :: Changing Passwordchg Option On Built-In Admin?

Aug 9, 2014

i would like to change the Passwordchg option so to prevent my password to be changed (i know this option could be changed but is a little more complicated), anyway, when i put the command Code: net user "Administrator" /Passwordchg:no

on my command prompt it throws (may be a not accurate translation) Code: Operation not permitted, could disable, delete or deny access to the administrator account

Now i dont see why since i could also disable this option (if it would be possible to enable it) and also i know and will NEVER forget my password. Anyway is there a way to achieve this in another way?

Accounts :: Prevent All But Admin Accounts To Create More Accounts?

Sep 10, 2013

I just bought my 15 year old son a laptop with Windows 8. I was able to set up my Admin account and his "standard" account, and put a time curfew and limits on his account, but when I logged in as him, I saw that he would be able to create another account which would pretty much defeat the whole time limit thing! Is there a way to prevent all but admin accounts to be able to create more accounts?? I'm pretty technically savvy but this new Windows 8 is not as easy to navigate as the previous versions!! (I wouldn't mind a "classic view" either, if that exists!)

Accounts :: User Accounts Can't Delete Bad Or Corrupt Account In UAC

May 11, 2013

How to correct user accounts in windows 8 Pro on new HP Pavilion g7 2246nr, I set notebook up using Microsoft account then called Microsoft when problems started, and we decided to switched to a local account. They created a new user account, then copied all my files to it. But I ended up with i administrator account that could not be deleted. That worked but my files are broken up between 3 other user accounts. I spoke with Microsoft to try and consolidate the accounts and they used a command line in cmd, run as an administrator, but it did not finish, or I may have cut it off by accident.

I am still working with the system but it has problems. I have reloaded the software 3 times so for. How to correct the problem without reloading all the software again? Also after setting up sharepoint in Office Pro Plus, it created another administrator account in UAC. I did not think this was going to happen? Right now in the UAC I have two administrator accounts with the sane name, In c:users there 5 with the temp file they created. What that command line they attempted to use was to correct and consolidate the user accounts.

How to correct the problem without reloading all the software again.

Accounts :: Win 8 / 8.1 - Restricted Users Can See Non-interactive Accounts

Mar 4, 2014

This bug has been present in 8 and it is still there in 8.1. If the computer has non-interactive user accounts (i.e. accounts listed under "Deny logon locally" in Local Security Policy), these accounts are visible in the "Sign Out/Lock" menu of every regular interactive user on that machine ("regular" in this case means a member of "Users" group, not "Administrators" group).

Interactive accounts with administrative privileges do not suffer from this problem: their "Sign Out/Lock" menu only lists interactive users, as it should be.

So, is there any workaround for this issue? Or is there an alternative way to create non-interactive accounts (for network access) so that they will not appear in "Sign Out/Lock" menu of regular users?

When I logon using a local username and password I keep being told that my password is incorrect.

The password IS correct. The account does exist. The account is NOT disabled.

I can login with a Microsoft Online Account fine. But I don't want to (and shouldn't have to) use this option. I have also tried converting the Online account to a Local account but once I do this and log off I am told again that my password is incorrect, which it isn't.

The local administrator account can login fine.

Multiple Accounts On Same Win 8 Machine

Oct 7, 2013

I have two different Microsoft accounts on my Windows 8 machine, which is a laptop. One of them is an account I got from my ISP and has been in use for years but that one is disappearing in a few days (I think) because I cancelled my account with my ISP. The other account is one I created within the last couple of weeks.

In transitioning to the new account, I'm finding it considerably more work than I expected and wonder if I am ignorant of some easier ways of doing things. For instance, I was surprised that the applications installed under the older account aren't visible under the new accounts. Is there an easy way to make them visible or do I really need to reinstall the same applications under the new account from scratch? For example, let's say I have a game like Taptiles on the old account and want it visible under the new account: do I really need to do a fresh install under the new account? Or is there an easier way to be able to play Taptiles from the copy I originally installed under the original account?

Also, what is the easiest way to pass data back and forth between the two accounts? I did a copy within a file on the original account and switched to the second account to paste that information in and was disappointed to find that it was not possible. I ended up sending an email to myself then copied from the email on the newer account. It struck me that there must be a better way but I'm not sure what that would be.

Also, with respect to XBox, some of the XBox games had accumulated fairly substantial scores as a result of playing the daily challenges. Is there any way to roll the scores from the old account into the new account, even though they have different "gamer tags" (the ID by which I am known when I play TapTiles or Mahjong or whatever)?

Accounts :: How To Change Login Name

Apr 5, 2014

I recently had to update my brother-inlaw's new laptop to the 8.1 version. He doesn't use email so when I was prompted to enter an email address when you installed he update, I just put in a random email address and password not knowing I'd need that info to sign into the laptop every time you turned it on. Once I finished the install, I didn't restart it to check to see what it would do. Now he tells me when the laptop starts up, it wants the password for the account I entered when I put in the random account during install. He tells me you cannot change the user name (email address) so I'm at a loss here on what to do to get him logged onto his laptop. Is there something I can do to get that info changed or at least get him logged into the computer so that info can be changed? I have created a new email for him to use but it does no good when I can't even get into the computer.
