Accounts :: Almost Impossible To LOGIN In Win 8
Aug 4, 2013
Just bought a PC with Windows 8 installed and get crazy with this PC.
Whenever I type a letter (or even any keyboard) in the password field, this round-dots image is turning for 10 minutes before displaying again the password field.....
And the problem is starting again and again......

Windows is asking me for a password despite I've never had a password.
Here's what happened:
I've never had a password and choose during the win install to have 1 local account without password.
I used to have a user/login name with an non ascii character (é), and it was causing me some trouble. Hence I decided to change it with ascii only characters. Control Panel, users etc ... properties, changed the name of the local user.
Reboot, and boom, Windows asks me for a password and is displaying the former user name !! But there's no option to change the user name, I've read that there should be a back arrow but it's not here (probably because windows "thinks" there's no point since there is only 1 user).
I don't know what to do, I used a Linux live usb distro to use some tools that can reset password and unlock account, however:
1/ it can only reset password, which seems not to be the issue here, the issue is the wrong user name
2/ the linux tool shows 1 local user with the last update name
So I'm guessing windows is not using the proper name to login, but doesn't provide any mean to change it.

I recently had to update my brother-inlaw's new laptop to the 8.1 version. He doesn't use email so when I was prompted to enter an email address when you installed he update, I just put in a random email address and password not knowing I'd need that info to sign into the laptop every time you turned it on. Once I finished the install, I didn't restart it to check to see what it would do. Now he tells me when the laptop starts up, it wants the password for the account I entered when I put in the random account during install. He tells me you cannot change the user name (email address) so I'm at a loss here on what to do to get him logged onto his laptop. Is there something I can do to get that info changed or at least get him logged into the computer so that info can be changed? I have created a new email for him to use but it does no good when I can't even get into the computer.

We were sent some Surface Pro 2 Tablets at work. They were already setup with the programs we needed, however they were not behaving correctly. Kept getting network errors for the domain, as everything else on the network was working but that.
Apparently at least unjoins our domain, restarts, and now I cannot login for anything in this world. I cannot get any other user accounts to show up but the last person who logged in, who was an administrator on tablet under our domain, and the password simply does not work. I have tried restarting in safe mode with and without network and that doesn't work because it won't recognize the password for the user. So I thought system restore would work but apparently I need to login to the account to do that as well.
Also tried rebooting to the command prompt. I apparently need to login for that as well. I have tried rebooting into a password recovery/reset disc but I cannot get it to boot to the cd, or at least if it is, it's certainly not reading the disc (which I knows works for XP & 7). I cannot do a reset password usb because alas, I need to be able to login to be able to create one of those. I've looked at several online things but most of them start with "you need to be logged in".

I'm having a problem setting up a PIN code to logon to Windows 8.1
I've linked mine and my partners MS accounts to Windows and as we use password generated passwords consisting of random characters, numbers etc, it would be so much easier to just use a PIN to logon to the computer. However, every time I click the option to 'Add' under PIN in the Sign-in options page of PC Settings, nothing happens. The cursor busy icon flickers but no new menus or options appear and I'm ultimately unable to access the settings.
I've tried logging off/on, rebooting and restart the credentials manager service but there's no change.
More info...
After clicking Add on the sign-in options page, I'm seeing quite a few of the following errors logged in the Application log:

i have recently bought a new laptop, windows 8. Its a Lenovo Ideapad Y50.
At first i had a password and a pincode, i was able to switch between the 2 login options at the login screen, i always used the pincode, as it was faster. I forgot the password. And somehow the option to choose between the 2, is now gone. To conclude, i am unablebto login to my laptop, as i dont know the password and it is not allowing me to login through my pincode. The account is not a microsoft account, so i cant just go to there website and change my password. Nor do i have a password reset disk. I have tried all the passwords i know and have no clue what to do next.

I have installed the Windows 8.1 update on two computers; one requires a password to login which I have changed to a PIN, the other logs in with no password.
How can I log in without a password or pin on the computer set to do so as control userpasswords2 will not let me change the password or delete the account and I don't want to set up more accounts

Right now when I start Windows 8 it stays on the lock screen and requires entering your MSN to further continue to desktop. I don't use charms I use Start8 so basically I get straight to the desktop but after I enter pass. How can I disable that logging on MSN completely?
Also at some time in the future I will want to re-enable that option. But better - can I reenable it to require password but once I log in to automatically sign off MSN?

I have a Win7 PC and a Win 8.1 PC, each with an admin and a user account and all accounts have passwords. On the Win7 PC, it will auto login without typing either user account password and it does this each time I reboot. On the Win 8.1 PC it will only start up once without needing either of the user account passwords, but then after each reboot, the users login screen displays and I need to select an account and put in the password for the account. How do I get the Win 8.1 PC to login automatically each time I reboot? Where should I look in the registry?
Netplwiz seems to be the same on each PC. The registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARE MicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogon is similar on each PC although the Win 8.1 PC has a few extra entries. I do not have ForceAutoLogon in the registry on the Win 7 PC and I do not want to add this in to the registry in the Win 8.1 PC because then Remote Desktop Connection will not be able to connect.

I was wondering if there was a way to avoid login when switching between accounts. I have things set up so I automatically login when I start the computer and when I awake from sleep.
But if my wife is using the computer and switches to her account, when I switch back, I have to sign in.
I could, I suppose change mine to a local account (like hers), but is there a way to do it with a microsoft account?

I've setup my machine to enable PIN login (I find it quite convenient as the computer is 99% of the time in my home and 4 digit PIN is enough to discourage family from tinkering with my machine but easy enough to quickly unlock - I had 3 letter pass on my win 7) but I'm facing an issue - often, even tho I've previously selected PIN windows 8 default to password after computer wake up (even after short sleep) which is annoying because of muscle memory (swipe lockscreen, enter pin - when it's password I have to remove it, change to PIN and so on).
How to force using PIN by default at every login/unlock?

My issue is I have two users on my pc, after I reset(reboot) the pc on one user or shutdown, windows 8.1 automatically boots to that last user that was logged in and it's very bad behavior that I hate. I want to tweak it in a way so after i reboot or shutdown my pc on one user, and after I turn it back on or it reboots I want for Windows 8.1 to display me a login screen where I can click on a user with which I want to login. How can I make it to work like this? (also I want it so after that reboot and that login screen will be displayed the last user that was logged on will not be logged on still so I won't end up with two users logged on at the same time...)

I've been using this build, which is equipped with a Crucial SSD and Windows 8.1, for about a month now. When I try logging into a standard account, my system's speed is on full display, logging in in barely 2 seconds. But on an account with admin privileges, logging in lags on the post-password screen for 20+ seconds before loading "Welcome" and the desktop. This is the only variable that causes the problem; local vs. Microsoft linked account, or Task Managaer startup processes enabled vs. disabled are not causing it. I've read that removing Gigabyte bloatware fixes the problem, and while I do have a Gigabyte MB, removing its software did not fix this problem for me.

I have attempted to remove the login by following directions to a screen that has a list of users and a checkbox that says user must enter username & password.
I can only remove it from the third item on the list. It doesn't fix the windows 8 login problem.. I have tried selecting the other 2 on the list, I can't select them I have tried everything I can think of, nothing works.
I think if I could get to the second one, it also may fix a problem I have in my Comcast email area which refuses to save my password login there, even though cookies are enabled, and I have tried to select "save password" a million times.. I am in password hell at work, now I am being forced to be in password hell at home.. Extra problem is that the password they want me to have is something I set up to match my work password at the Microsoft forums.. It was about six months back, later my company forced me to add one more forced item of a capital letter, so my work password has a changed capital letter to it.. I can't change my home password, because MS sees a change of just a capital letter as "not good enough".. So I am constantly typing in my work password to get an error, then at work I am starting now to forget to capitalize.. It is insane.. I swear the more people force password requirements on you the more insecure you get as you have to start writing them all down.

When computer starts up it has the screen showing date and time. As soon as I touch any key, a green screen with email address pops up. It wants me to type in password. Once I type the password in it tells me my PC is offfline. Please sign in with the last password used on the PC. I have no desktop, nothing. Just goes back and forth between these two screens.

Is there a way to access Local Policy Group by using the Windows Explorer?

I just got Windows 8 and tried disabling the log-in screen. I went into "netplwiz" now I seem to have lost my administrative powers.
I can't download programs or access the "user accounts" tab in the control panel. Every time I try to do something that would require admin powers, I get a "user account control" prompt that tells me that if I, "want to allow the following programs to make changes to this computer," that I need to enter an administrator password and then click yes.
But there is no text box to enter a password and the "yes" button is grayed out. My only option is to hit "no" or "show details."
When I go into "PC Settings" and the "users" tab, it says that "there are no other users on this PC" and "Sign in as an administrator to add users to this PC." But how do I do that?
I've tried going into the "run" operation and entered "net user administrator /active:yes" command, but nothing happens. I also tried entering "msconfig" but I ran into the same problem of not having admin powers to do that. I tried starting in safe mode by jamming shift and F8 but that didn't work either.

I am using Windows 8 on my laptop which uses my Windows Live account to login. Problem is it has suddenly stopped letting me log in and I'm locked out. The message I get is "You can't sign into your PC at the moment. Go to account.live.com to fix the problem or try the last password you used on this PC". I hadn't changed anything which may have made it do this.
I have tried the following but nothing is working:
- Changed my password in my Live account
- Used a previous password
- Plugged my laptop into a network cable rather than using just Wifi
- Rolled my laptop to a previous time
I can't refresh as it needs the password but I can access the command prompt. I'm not knowledgeable on command prompts so not sure what I could do here which might resolve it. I also don't want to lose any files.

My son is no longer able to logon to his standard user account on my Windows 8.1 U1. I am unable to switch users following a cold start of the computer. Also, I am unable to switch users while logged on to my account.
My System:
Dell XPS 8100 with Intel i5 processor and 6GB DDR3 ram. The desktop initially included Windows 7 Home Premium. I upgraded to Windows 8 Pro as a $40 Windows Store purchase. I've since updated to Version 8.1 and the first update following the release of 8.1. At time of upgrade to Windows 8, all prior updates to Windows 7 were current and successful. Since upgrading to Windows 8, all updates are current and I only experienced 1 update "Failed" (KB2919355), which upon a reinitialization after the failure, was successful. Until this problem, the PC and operating system have run very well with no real problems.
As noted above, there are 2 users on this PC. Myself (administrator), and son (standard user). I can't pinpoint an exact date when my son was no longer able to logon to his account; however in checking the registry I find that the last notation of his login activity under error reporting was a successful login and logoff done on April 30th. And even though attempts have been made since that time to login to his account, there are no notations of this in the error reporting log that I can find. Most likely that's because I can't get to a point that will allow me to "initiate" a login for his account. It's as though his account does not exist.
What Happens When:
Boot - When the computer boots, it only presents a login screen for my account. There is no right-arrow allowing me to switch users. Switching to a secure login via Ctrl Alt Del yields the same results.
After I'm logged in - If I click to switch users, once again I will get a login screen with my account only and no way of switching users. If I wake the computer from sleep or from screen saver mode, I'm presented with my user picture and password, however, this time I do get a right-arrow to switch user. When I click the arrow, the screen goes black for about 5-7 seconds, at which time I'm presented my user login and no switch user arrow.
Efforts to Resolve:
I've researched this issue the the past month or so and have checked and/or tried just about everything that's out there from Microsoft, Windows 8 Forum, The Windows Club, and a few other sites as well. As I follow the suggested fixes, everything seems to be as it should be. I've yet to find anything that does not appear to be "right". For example: SFC /scannow says everything's OK. If I go to User Accounts, both accounts are present. If I go to C:Usersmy son's account, it is there. I am able to create another account with name and password. However, I am unable to open that account for the same reasons that I'm not able to open my son's account. The new account created is NOT reflected under C:UsersNew Account, so I'm unable to copy files from my son's account to the new account.
Because of the time delay from when my son first informed me that he's been unable to open his account, my restore points are all following when it probably occurred. I do have a Macrium image from late March that is available. However, I'm wondering if I brought the PC back to a state from this past March if I would be able to install all updates to get the system current. I know Microsoft was imposing time constraints associated with updating to Update 1 following Windows 8.1 ...

I just bought a new Windows 8 Dell Vostro 5470 laptop. I signed in with my Live account, which I use on my main computer everyday.
I upgraded into Windows 8.1, and set up fingerprint authentication as well. I didn't have a problem signing in with it, nor with my 12-character password (which I used today on my PC to log in).
Last night I locked the laptop (from the ctrl+alt+del screen) and left it. By the time I got back, it went into hibernation or something. Meaning to say, it looked turned off. I didn't touch it until today.
When I turn it back on today, I couldn't sign in. Neither the fingerprint wasn't working, nor my password - but then on a closer look, I saw that I couldn't enter more than 9 characters in the password field! Restart didn't work. Reminder - my password is 12 characters long and I used it just the day before.
Disclaimer: this is a brand new laptop, nothing is installed on it. The only things I did with it were Windows Update, upgrade to 8.1, set up fingerprint log-in and surf the web a little bit. I don't mind totally resetting everything, I just don't know how to do it.
