Accessing Windows 8 Through External Enclosure?
Jan 3, 2014
I work on malware and viruses and I use a junker XP machine to do it. I have been doing it for many years, however, I have my first Windows 8 hard drive to scan and my XP machine beeps at me but the new drive never shows up for me to scan with my malware scan tools. Does this have something to do with Windows 8?

I have this annoying problem that just showed up recently since I've changed/upgraded laptops the past week.
I can't seem to access or rather run the files on certain folders for my portable drive. I've already changed permissions and made myself owner for the files but it seems it won't accept it and it's giving me off an error still saying that access is denied.
I've searched high and low on how to solve this but nothing seems to work.
- I tried the registry trick to "Take Ownership" and it didn't work
- Also tried various (advanced)security settings to allow/deny etc. No dice.
**Last option would be to reformat my portable drive and then just recover the emails again, will the permissions/ownership reset if I try to format the drive? Since deleting them is out of the option since I don't have "permission" for those folders/files.

I recently purchased a new laptop (Windows 8), we put the hard disk from my old slow laptop (win XP) that stopped working into a "sata enclosure". When I attached it, I cant find my personal files. Its like the space is taken up but my important files cant be seen!! All that comes up on the hard disk enclosure drive (F is: recovery, swwork, windows, and preboot folders... and a recov.wim file. I even ran "Search" but still cant find my documents or anything...

I have an Asus ux32a zenbook and basically, I was wanting to reinstall my windows 8 back to the factory settings. My recovery image I saved is deleted and I may have started formatting my hard drive but am not sure. I try the f9 at startup to access the asus recovery but nothing happens.
I have a copy of Windows 7 I was going to just install over it but when I go to the advanced set up where it asks where I want to install windows I get a long list of disk partitions that have OS, Data, Restore ect. already on it looks like , which makes me think I can still access windows 8 somewhere on my computer.
The problem is, when I boot my computer without an installation usb, it directly takes me to the bios and nothing else. My question is, is it possible to see if I can access my recovery partition, if there is one, just through bios, since that is my only option when I turn the computer on?

I just got a new laptop that had a second Hard drive bay, so to speed up copying all my information from my old laptop (which had Windows 7) I just took the HD out of the old and put it in the new.
Everything seems to work fine unless I try to access the files stored in the /users directory (which is where almost all of my work files were). When I double click the file for my username on my old computer, it tells me I do not have permission to view this folder.
Under that is a button that says Click here to permanently gain access to this folder (with an admin icon).
So... I click there. Then as it begins to open the folder, the green bar flies up and stops at about 95% and just sits there.
I had about 40GB of data in subfolders to this, is that how long it takes to change all their permissions? Or do I have to put the HD back in the old laptop and copy it another way?

Windows 8 CryptoAPI crashes Outlook while same problem does not occur on Windows 7.
This occurs when signing, encrypting, or decrypting a email with a digital Certificate where the private key is secured by Microsoft Windows 8 CryptoAPI on the highest setting. Outlook requests CryptoAPI for the Key and Crashes.
This does not Happen on Windows 7. In addition, the private key can be accessed by Windows Live Mail 2012 on Windows 8 while Outlook 2010/2013 cannot.
Outlook configured on Windows 8 required elevation in order to access private key

just noticed this earlier today, but when accessing any app from my metro UI or while even in the metro UI,the START and my User name, are highlighted black, and the app tablets are low quality, and when accessing certain apps like Skype and or the personification screen everything is black, and only the area around certain buttons are brightened. its somewhat like when you take your mouse and scroll over something high lighting it, its like my metro UI is constantly being done like that, it seems like it would be an easy fix, but i haven't come across anything yet.

I tried to access the C Drive on a windows 8.1 computer from a windows 7 computer and got the access denied error. The C Drive has sharing enabled and full permissions for everyone. I can access other partitions on the 8.1 pc with no problem. This isn't a major problem as I can transfer files from the 8.1 pc to the 7 pc.

So recently my computer was dealing with 'memory full' despite still telling me that there was space left. Anyways I deleted a lot of files in my downloads as well as other unimportant files {all files created by me for like school work, photoshop edits etc ....
Ever since then my computer has been constantly crashing whenever I attempt to right click in documents. I can right click on desktop and on the internet but the moment I try to access my documents and right click (I tried this in my computer etc, same thing) and it just crashes. I can still save documents and delete them (using highlight and then deleting them that way) but otherwise it crashes?
It also occasionally doesn't let me see that I have any documents, downloads and the such. I have windows 8 laptop from samsung.
Have I somehow accidentally deleted an important file that is causing it to crash? If so would there be a way to work out what one and restore it?

A few weeks ago I had some issues with not being able to save files.
Some days later when I tried to open a word document I got a message saying something along the lines of "are you sure you want to open this file? It has become corrupted and caused loads of problems with your computer the last time you had it open". So I guess that was the original issue. At the time I didn't desperately need the file and I had a lot of work so I haven't had time to try to solve the issue until now. What might have caused the file to get corrupted? (I'm not even sure my PC used this term). And is there any way I can retrieve the information in it.

How can I access the user data from my Win7 install , from my Windows 8 install?
Everytime I try to go to it from Windows 8 ---- > My computer it says that I don't have permission to access the files for that user, then attempts to do so for some random period of time, and in the end nothing happens.

I've got an older SSD 120 GB. I was wondering if by partitioning it I could create a BOOTABLE Windows install disk. I've no problem with USB STICKS but using a bootable reserve SSD would be great IMO as I could then also have all my various other programs on it like Ms OFFICE and PHOTOSHOP so re-installing Windows together with the applications should be a breeze.
Perhaps the Bootable USB STICK procedure could be used as on boot the computer thinks it's a Disk anyway ( says USB 2.0 LEXAR HDD) for the USB STICK.
Note I'm not talking here about RUNNING Windows from an external HDD -- that can be done easily enough with Windows Enterprise (Windows to GO) but simply creating a Windows install media that will boot off an external SSD (NOT a USB STICK). I have the ISO's.

My laptop came with Windows 8 pre-installed and I want to make a backup of it in case it crashes. I have a 1 TB external USB HDD. Can I use it for both making a backup of Windows and then continue using same drive to make auto backups of my PC per request. Or do I have to have separate memory devices, i.e., one that only contains a backup of windows and one for other backups. Just wondering before I do any backing up because if I backup Windows on my 1 TB drive and the rest gets blocked for other saves then that would be a waste of good memory space..,

A few months ago my laptop broke and it needed repairs. The HDD was replaced and i got my laptop back with one new HDD inside and one "broke" HDD in a bag. Later the "Repaired" Laptop crashed again so i bought a new one and took the HDD out of the old laptop. I bought a HDD case with USB connection and both of the HDD's where intact. The oldest HDD contained windows 7 and the replaced contained windows 8. Now i want to sell the Windows 8 HDD so i want it to be clean of personal files but i want it to keep windows 8. I thought the solution was to run the windows 8 on the HDD so i can use the program deletation program of that windows 8. The problem is i dont know how to run windows 8 of a hard drive. I have searched the internet but with no success.

My wife just got a new PC running Windows 8.1 Pro and she wants to re-connect her external hard drive that has all her game files on it to the new PC.
While the new PC recognizes the drive it states that it needs to be initialized , doing so would wipe the data currently on the drive which would be unacceptable. How to get the new PC to recognize this drive and its data?

I am on an i7-12gb RAM+SSD Asus laptop, running Windows 8 x64. I am using two external HDDs attached via USB. One is an external-powered 2TB 3.5" WD, and the other is a 1TB 2.5" 5400 rpm Matshita HDD.
I store my music and movie collection in these drives, and a few setup files for the programs that I use.My problem is, from time to time when I boot up my computer, I start my browser, Word, iTunes, even Snipping Tool, etc. or when I need access to some function in a program (e.g. language proofing in Word, some function in Photoshop CS6, etc) my laptop randomly needs to access one, or both of my external drives and read something from there. I hear the whirring sound from the HDD and then my laptop starts responding again. This does not happen all the time, but it happens frequently enough to spoil a good workflow a few times during the day.
My external HDD's are slow in access times, and the 2TB WD actually shuts itself off after a non-use period and takes 6-7 seconds to turn back on.
So this translates into me randomly waiting for 6-7 seconds while using my laptop.
This case has been the same since using Windows 7 and through a few fresh installs.
I want these two HDD's to just store my files and not interfere with my OS' working.

Just want to say that on a decent laptop (i5 processor) running Windows to Go from a standard external USB2 disk (using a 7200 RPM old laptop drive connected via a sata==>usb2 connector) performance is certainly totally ACCEPTABLE. Even running Photoshop is OK - and I've connected the USB drive via an UNPOWERED USB hub !!
The Windows to go system is certainly nice as a portable system with my own copies of Office etc in various languages and keyboard configurations -- certainly when I'm on site where other languages / keyboards are used.
For those who think you have to use a "certified" device -- you don't -- you can install on "bog standard" devices -- you will need to extract the IMAGEX program from the WAIK -- you can use the Windows 7 WAIK (downloadable from Ms) if you haven't got it. Ensure you chose the x86 / x64 version depending on what version of Windows you want in your Windows to go system.
Here's how to create a Windows to Go system on a "normal" device. (You still of course need Windows 8.1 Enterprise).

Few days ago I bought a new Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E540. It has two USB3.0 ports and one USB2.0. I bought the machine without OS and installed Windows 8.1 Pro(x64) myself. Everything seems to be working fine except when I want to use My WD Elements 1TB external HDD in USB 3.0 port. It just doesn't get recognized. In USB 2.0 port it works fine.
What I've gathered and tried so far :
- Device manager does not show anything not even Unknown Device , yet my USB 3.0 Kingston pendrive works fine out of the box in the same slot
- I'm pretty sure the USB power is not the issue because the WD HDD , when plugged, starts blinking for a while , then lights up fulltime and i can feel and hear the drive spinning
- I've disabled USB selective suspend in my Power plan
- I've disabled Fast Startup
- In msconfig , im stuck at "Selective startup" (if changed it doesnt even let me APPLY and switches back to Selective right after I close/change tab in msconfig, I tried doing it in safe mode , same thing)
Using my harddrive in USB3.0 speed is essential for me.

I successfully managed to create a virtual hard drive on my external drive to try boot windows 8 off it. I managed to boot it up and the login screen also appears as normal. I have a successful login, But on the second time login I am faced with black screen and the cursor. I'm aware that Microsoft has released a fix for this. I have attached the executable in the zip. I tried running this fix but it didn't work . After the black screen appears, even in safe mode I cannot run explorer.exe or open any folder to try running any executable files

In windows 8 everything worked pretty great, but now after doing a clean and fresh install of 8.1 pro it can sometimes take up to 30 seconds to access any of my external usb or esata hard drives. This never ever happened on windows 8. It doesn't always happen but it happened enough for me to make this thread. I tried changing ownership and security policies to my account just to make sure, and i tried reinstalling the drivers for the drives too and it still does this!

How can I disable Windows from touching that drive? it is very slow I want all temp stuff copied on my SSD

I plan to get a new Windows 8.1 laptop soon. I want it to have 8gb RAM and an internal 128gb SSD drive where I keep all the OS, driver and other system files. Then I want all my media files (documents, music, vids, etc) on an external USB 3.0 hard drive. I recognize that keeping files on an external drive may cause slow behavior in some situations. My my guess is that USB 3.0 is fast enough so this won't be a problem in most situations. And I plan to get an external drive that has USB 3.0.
I'm not a power user. I don't edit video or do fancy rendering or stuff like that. I just browse the net, create some docs and spreadsheets, listen to some music and watch some vids. I play around with Audacity once in a while and that's about it. I'm an average user.
So, any problems with keeping all my user files on an external drive?

My Home Computer (HC) has Windows 8 as the OS. It is wired to an Asus RT-AC66U wireless router. The router is directly wired to an Asus RT-N66U wireless router converted to an access point. My GoFlex HDD is connected directly to the Access Point (RT-N66U).
From my HC, I can open the RT-N66U, and look at the network map, and see the GoFlex listed and the network address, XXX.XXX.X.XXX. If I go to run on the HC, and typeXXX.XXX.X.XXX, it says Windows can't communicate with the device. The Home Computer shows nothing under Network. If I look at "Computer" I can see all the HDD plus GoFlexHome:UPNP and even open the external HDD. But I cannot copy or move files from my computer to the GoFlex external HDD.
I called Seagate Tech Support who said the GoFlex had to show under Network for me to use it.
My wireless laptop(WL) is connected to my network. The GoFlex HDD is under network as is my HC. I can use the GoFlex drive normally and transfer folders or files back and forth. The WL also shows my HC under network, but when I try to access the HC, "Windows cannot communicate with the device"
Both computers are joined to the same workgroup. Under Network and Sharing Center the WLactive network is the name of my wireless network, and is joined under Homegroup. My HC under active network states Network 2, joined under homegroup. The connections are Wireless for the WL and Ethernet for the HC.
How to get my HC on the proper network or settings?

I have bought a 2TB western Digital external USB3 hard drive and installed the Asmedia drivers but windows never picks it up. See the screen capture. The drivers are the ASMedia USB 3 host controller but it seems to show up after a few seconds as USB Root Hub (xHCI) with a triangle. I have tried updating from there and directing it to the drivers and uninstalling and then reinstalling and the drive shows up long enough to copy but then disappears again.
I literally have run out of options.
It seems to be a common theme on the web and especially with Western Diital drives although I think it is windows struggling to recognise them and implement correctly.

Just replaced my OS (Win 8.1) Drive, and was planning on using the old drive as a back up.
This new (and old) drive have just the OS, all my programs and media etc are on other drives.
Can I put my old OS drive, with Windows 8.1 still installed, into a USB Docking Station, and use it as a back up boot drive. In other words will this drive boot from the Docking Station if I keep it up to date (Copy Disk regularly) in case of internal hard drive failure?
