Jan 5, 2013i have win 7 pro, 8gb ram, and home made pc. in the past 3/4 days the unspecified error message "win installer package could not open". i downloaded open office and it installs till the end of ms virtual ++ redistributable and the error nessage pops up. i have applied several fixes to no avail. i verified that win installer service was on, and the folder is intact. dont know if one of the files is corrupt? i am stumped. where do i go from here?

Dec 15, 2011I am running windows 7 sp1 and downloaded the german language service pack.but i can t install it and at the end of the progress it fails, with out mentioning the reason or giving an error.I didn t do that from windows update because i wanted to have the installation file for the future, after reinstalling windows.By the way, i have enough free space on windows drive, have downloaded the same 32- bit as the system, and the installation file doesn t seen to be corrupted.I also try to install it, instead of double-clicking- by going to region and language sections and install from there, but in browse window i can t give the installion file to it and it says that : no valid installation package is founded in this folder.

Mar 6, 2009I am able to connect from XP to a network share at my workplace by giving login/password. However, when I try to connect from Windows 7 i get the error: "specified authentication package is unknown"
However, I am able to connect to another shares. From XP no one is having any problems in connecting to this share at all. Have googled but to no avail. Found one suggestion to add 'authentication packages' key to registry but it was already present in my Win 7 and with the correct value.
Any help would be appreciated as I am at my wits end with this issue. Win 7 is working flawlessly otherwise. Much much better than XP. Vista was pretty much unusable on my laptop (HP TC 4400 tabletpc)

Whenever, I try to install the update, everything goes fine, and then suddenly goes blank and the desktop returns (but the Windows update screen had closed). When I open Windows update, it shows that the aforesaid update is not installed. And when I try to open Microsoft Security Essentials shortcut on my desktop, the machine is not able to find it and asks to delete it. I can't even open Microsoft Security Essentials manually from Program files. Things return to normal on System Restore. But the Microsoft Security Essentials appears potentially unprotected and asks for a full system scan. But before the scan is complete the Microsoft Security Essentials screen closes and the desktop returns once again. And, once again, when I try to open Microsoft Security Essentials shortcut on my desktop, the machine is not able to find it.

I have been stuffing around for several days and have tried many, many things all to no avail. Jul 6, 2010I am having trouble installing Windows XP Mode on a Dell E4300 laptop with Windows 7 Pro 32-bit. For the record, I have installed XPM on multiple occasions without any issues at all, until now. Upon launching the XP Mode installer, it starts to deploy the temporary files but hangs at expanding 'sourcesxpm'. Then I get the following error: 'This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package'.
If I try multiple times, I am sometimes able to get beyond that point where the XP Mode setup screen shows up, but then I receive an error during the installation process that says: 'Source file not found: D:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxsourcesXPM. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it'. I've checked everything I could with no avail permissions, Hardware Virtualization. I also installed it on an identical machine with the same setup. Then I got a hunch that the Windows Installer might have been corrupted. So I ran the command to un-install it (msiexec /uninstall) & got the same error message as above.

Sep 21, 2011after upgrading to internet explorer 9, i realized that ie9 doesn't work with most of the things i do in the browser!! facebook locks up, Internet doesn't like it, and most of all, i can't do my online classes because internet explorer 9 is not supported by webassign or csi blackboard. webassign and blackboard do not work in firefox, either.i thought, uninstall ie9 and put internet explorer 8 back on. after being to over 20 different websites, i cannot find an installer for ie8 for windows 7 x64 anywhere. i did try the installers for both windows xp x64 and windows vista x64, but both of them said the installer was incompatable with my version of windows.
i contacted microsoft and they told me to go to programs and features, windows features, and check internet explorer 8. but after i uninstalled ie9, only the internet explorer 9 feature was listed, not 8.so i called support back, and this time they didn't tell me to do that. instead, the support rep, as stupid as he was, told me that internet explorer 8 is not compatable with windows 7. i told him, my computer came with ie8 pre-installed. windows updates is what broke it!so basically, tl;dr, i need an installer for ie8 for windows 7 x64.

Jul 30, 2011I was having a problem earlier with tons of BSOD's, but after getting some help here I was able to solve the problem. But lo and behold I try to install something and get this new problem. I tried going into cmd and unregistering windows installer and then re-registering it but that didnt work. Someone suggesting going into regedit and going to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCURRENT CONTROL SETSERVICESMSIserverWOW64 then right click on WOW64, then select Modify Set Value Data to 0 (mine was set at 1) and Base should be Hexadecimal. However, I can't even do this because when I go to MSIserver there is no WOW64 folder so I don't even know what to change.
System restore doesn't work earlier. I really want to avoid a complete reinstall. I was able to avoid it with my BSODs but now with this new issue I cannot install anything on my computer.

Sep 8, 2012I built this computer Dec 11, and have had consistant installer issues from day one. Installing or removing programs hangs/takes forever or doesn't work at all. I don't get any error messages. It just hangs forever. Sometimes, if I go to bed on it, it will be complete in the morning. On the first Windows OS install, once I got the install probs, I just did another clean install. It didn't change a thing.Sometimes, thru the past, I've just ignored the errors, and simply tried to get along without some of the programs I've wanted to install. But now, Windows Updates aren't installing either, and the persistant messages and restart prompts are driving me crazy.Where in the heck do I start? I've run Microsoft's fixit for install errors.
