I using Win 7.when I entering Computer example D disks I can't sort item manually. when I used Win vista it's was simple, and now I can't. there are many types to sort folders ( By name, Type, Size, Date ...) but not manually?
View 8 RepliesI had Windows 7 Home Premium put on my HP Pavilion a6500f last week. I had this same problem with Vista 64-bit but not with Windows XP. I have my file "Sort by" set to Name; Ascending but when I open a file it always moves to the end position when I close it. As an example say I have a folder named Book A. Inside that folder are files named Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, and Chapter 4 in that order. If I open and edit Chapter 2 when I close it the files are now in this order: Chapter 1, Chapter 3, Chapter 4, and Chapter 2. How do I make the files stay in the proper sort order? It's very irritating to have to move files back into their correct order every time.

I have a folder for every artist, and in those folders there�s a folder for each album. The only thing on this hard drive is music. In Windows XP, I could sort by name and show in groups. This way everything was kept alphabetical, all the �A� bands were under �A �, all the �B� bands were under �B�� With Windows 7 I get gigantic chunks of A-H, I-P and Q-Z. I have over nearly 600 folders on this drive. Grouping all those folders into 3 giant blocks is nothing short of useless. Is there any way at all to sort like XP?

Question 2 Is there a way to change the order Dir sorts files in. And I want to have the files sorted the way I want by just typing dir. Not using any /'s after dir.
I just bought a new 1TB drive. On my previous drive, everytime i (i.e) copy/paste files to that directory, it automatically sort itself out by Name. Now, it does sort by name but not if i don't click refresh or navigating to another folder and coming back to that directory.I've set it to sort by name. Is there something that's missing?
View 3 Replies View RelatedIs there anyway to sort files globally? It seems everytime I open or close a folder, it re-sorts it to another criteria from when I last set it. For instance, I'll pick "ascending" and close the folder. Then when I come back to it later, it automatically switches to "descending" on it's own. I'm really getting tired of having to right-mouse click the contents of a folder all the time to correct this.

If I enter a folder that has many subfolders and extra files, it seems to load everything at once in alphabetical order, then there's a delay while it sorts the folders and the individual files separately, also in alphabetical order. This delay can be something like 5 seconds with just a few hundred items, and it just grows from there.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI used Acer's function to restore my computer to factory settings, and I picked the option to save backup files.
I can find the backup folder, and I know the files are there because the folders take up quite a bit of size, but there are no programs in the folder. The only programs I have been able to get was through MTGO. It found the files some how. Excel, word, etc can't find those files. Even the ones MTGO found I can only see using the program.
Does anyone know how I can get my old prgrams back?
I've been having this problem off and on for the last month or two. So, when I try to launch a game (For example Warcraft 3) The program shows the launch image, and when that disappears, the program appears in task manager taking up only 100-3000 Kb of memory, never rising. When I end said task, my computer slows down to a snail pace and I need to restart. I've run virus scans, and every time they come up with nothing. I tried to system restore, but I also don't have any restore points other than the system update I did this morning. The problem started in about February of this year, and goes off and on for about a week or two. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 build 7601, with avast! antivirus.

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy computer will not shut down with the "shut down" command. It goes to a screen with message "shutting down" then just sits there. I need to power off manually to shut it down. Once I reboot I can then shut down properly. But after some time of normal use I can't shut down. Are oine or more of my programs leaving some residual piece in place that doesn't stop when I close the program?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to clean up an external drive by deleting various files (using Windows Explorer) but like every file gives me "an unexpected error is keeping you from deleting the file error 0x80070570".
Now for some reason I can delete the files using del in the command prompt.But I need to delete hundreds of specific files scattered around, so I need to figure out how to get around this error.I don't want to chkdsk etc on the external either. I just want to bypass the error.
i tried to open a file by double clicking on it and it didnt work so I right clicked and went into the OPEN WITH. there i clicked on internet explorer to open the file. Once I did that every program on my desktop switched its icon to the internet explorer icon. now i cant open internet explorer, skype, teamviewer, vuze or any other program on my desktop. every time i double click on a program a window pops up that has three options, open, sace and cancel. i clicked open ans save and it didnt work. now i dont know how to undo what i did.

I use an outliner/PIM which uses IE to display saved files in it's viewer pane. It had a problem showing saved emails in .eml format. I then tried to open the emails directly with IE 32 & 64 bits - without success.
What happens is: a donwload progress-window opens, and, in front of that, a download dialogue asking do I want to open or save or cancel.
I thought I was being smart when I deselected "Always ask for this filetype" but then it opens the file in Thunderbird, the default handler.
But I want it to open in IE - why does the download dialogue open at all? I'm trying to use IE to open it: this happens if I try to open a locally saved file via the context menu "open with" or if I try to open from within IE.
Some security setting maybe? This used work in XP IE8 so presume it should work here. I presume I could make IE the default handler for eml but dont want to mess with Thunderbird either...
So, lately my Windows 7 started acting weird. I'm not able to delete or rename files that I have used recently. Let's say I run File.exe, close it and I want to delete/rename this file. Sometimes I'm trying to do that I get error about something that couldn't delete file because it's in use. It also happens with auto patchers in games, system denies to delete/modify items. Happens with compiler aswell, they're not able to over-write output file. I'm not going to post screenshot since it doesn't happen always and I don't really know how to reproduce this, but it's regular error box with message similar to "Couldn't delete file. File is in use/opened by some process." or something like that with 2 buttons "Retry" and "Cancel". Current solution for that is Log off/Reboot or use application called "UnLocker" (I found it via Google some time ago)

The thing is, changing the desktop.ini doesn't seem to have any visible effect.If I manually change the picture (folder properties->Customize->Choose File) the new picture is used, and the desktop.ini is created or modified.However,if I open the desktop.ini in notepad, and make the same change there i.e. adding the line

to the [ViewState] section, there is absolutely no discernible effect. I've tried restarting explorer.exe, deleting the thumbs.db files, even restarting windows, but the changes are never picked up. Win7 seems determined to ignore any changes to desktop.ini it didn't make itself.
I can gather from the Icon packs I've downloaded from Mr. Grim that certain dll's need to be edited, probably with Res hacker. Can some one confirm that if I wanna be able to use my own icons, I just need to run restorator on those dlls and change the icons that Mr.Grim changes? If this is the case, is there a tutorial which lists the icons in those dll's?

Then maybe a week later I want to make use of that restore point but *voom*. Restore point is gone.I know ccleaner does this when you run it. So I never bother running it until after a few months.What the hell is deleting my manual restore points any ideas where to start looking? I reserve 3% on a 500GB drive so that is good.
