View 1 RepliesI was checking Microsoft Office Word Starter 2010 and I realized that one of the files had hidden text in it. From Options - Display, I chose show hidden text and it was "Top of Form" at the top of the page. But I got curious about this and made some search and I realized that you can hide text in a txt file with a stream method and also there can be hidden streams in processes also. How can I find out if a doc(x) file has no streams in it. I mean the hidden text may be seen by the method of Options - Display; but can someone hide something with a password in a doc(x) file? If yes, how can I find this out?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an application that I am supporting that was written in VB6. It runs on xp, vista and 7 with no problem. I don't know if this is the only machine that this happens on. I have not seen it yet on other machines. A user has a HP laptop with vista upgraded to 7. The program opens an Access 2002 mdb file. I added a msgbox that tell me what the mdb file path is when it is successfully opened. At some point after use the mdb file gets hidden and becomes invisible to file manager. I can rename the file and run the program and it tells me the original named file has successfully opened. I can delete the mdb file and still it successfully opens. I can copy another version to the same folder and the old version opens even though there is a new one with the same name. I have all file options to visible. It is not just hidden. What is wierd is I have a file open dialog to select which mdb file to use. That file list shows this phantom mdb file when the file manager does not and the file has a lock icon on it. I am pretty sure it did this in vista before the 7 upgrade. Uninstalling and installing to a NEW folder does allow them to work again normally. Installing to the same folder does not remove the phantom file and that one will continue to open. It is very frustrating to not know which file you are really working with. I had them turn off indexing on the entire drive. I am at a loss as to what is going on. We are looking to make some sales of this program, but this problem could kill that so I am very interested in what is going on.
View 6 Replies View RelatedRecently my XP machine bite the dirt and on one of its IDE NTFS HD contained a few folders with hidden and encrypted files. Thinking this was a decent way to keep family members from touching my work, I never excepted them to become inaccessible after I installed Win 7 Pro 64bit.
My problem is that I am unable to open, or move any of the encrypted and hidden files within the folders, yet I am able to only copy the folders, but without the files contained within, as I receive permissions errors.
When I try to move one of the files, I get a File Access denied error stating "You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy this file", I press continue, and I get another error "Your require permission from Administrators to make changes to this file".
My user account "Mark" is an Administrator within the Administrators group, and I have set User Acccount Control to it's default setting. I have also enabled the hidden default Administrator account, logged in as it, and receive the same errors. If it makes any difference, the username of my XP machine was PHOENIX/Administrator
When I view the file attributes, Read-only, and Hidden are not selected, but under Advanced "Encrypt Contents" is selected. If I click details, I receive an EFS error "Unable to find the user information for the file", and another window appears called User Access with all of its options grayed out.
If I took at the Security Tab of one of the files, it says "You must be an administrative user with permissions to view this objects security properties", I click continue, and it shows the Administrators group (PHOENIX Administrators) with allow full control selected. After pressing ok, I click on Advanced, I click on the Owner Tab, and current Owner says "Unable to display current Owner", so I click on Edit, and I have the option to change owner to PHOENIX Administrators or PHOENIXMark, I chose Mark, press Apply and close and reopen the windows. I then try to move the file again, but this time the error says "I need permission from PHOENIXMark to make changes to the file"
I've had no problems accessing the other files from the XP HD, but I've spent weeks now combing forums for solutions, and I just can't access the hidden and encrypted files from the XP hard drive. I was able to access one encrypted and hidden spreadsheet without a problem, so I don't understand why I cannot access these two groups of folders and the files within their subfolders.
whenever I open docx file there is hidden file ~$name of file.docx created. which type of file is that? Is it in virus, maleware. for example If I open house.docx file then ~$house.docx file created which is hidden form. I had saw this file when i select show all hidden file option. when i try to open ~$house.docx file it show message the file is corrupted and cannot be open.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSome of my important system files are no longer hidden and I can't hide them even with the Command Prompt "attrib" command. Files such as bootmgr and ntldr are shown and I can't hide them. Also, show Protected System files is unchecked and show hidden files is also unchecked so they shouldn't be showing. I tried to re-add their system file attribute but I keep getting an "Access Denied" error in CMD and I do not have user account control on and I'm on a Default Administrator Account.

I downloaded rkill and Combofix. I have Malware Bytes installed, but I am unable to run or open any of them. My task manager is clouded with consent.exe. Every time I try to open a file, another consent.exe appears in the task manager. My anti-virus (Vipre) only found:
fraudtool.win32.fakerean.d
with 2 traces. About I week ago I got rid of (but not completely) a variant of the fake Win 7 Anti-Virus virus', and I'm sure it just crept back up on me.
I can access the internet, but that's about it. When I open my start menu I can't select anything, but I figured how to expand the lower task bar so I can access mycomputer. What do I do from here?
We recently installed Yahoo messenger and suddenly the Library folder isn't showing any folders/files under the Administrator account. When I go to create a new Library it reads the following error message: "Unable to create the new file 'New Library.library-ms' File System Error: (16389)." Not only is the library no longer accessible, but I cannot access any of the Music, Pictures or Documents from the Start Menu.I am only able to access the folders using the search bar by selecting "User Name" from the drop down box, then suddenly everything's there. It will not allow me to drag/drop anything into the Library folder or even create a new one.

The vm is not broken at all and works fine. I've moved several vm's off my laptop drive onto this new usb drive. I'm working with an alienware m11x r3 with a 750gb 7200rpm drive & a usb 3.0 wd my passport external drive that IS using drive compression. (blue text for file/folder names) I've tried to move this file via explorer and tera copy. both fail. in the explorer scenario, I've burnt at least the weekend attempting to get this file off my drive. in a few cases it gets down to just a smidgen of space in the transfer progress bar with a 'theoretical hour remaining', but that was 10 hours ago. when I'd look in resource manager,it starts off in a normal read from c drive and write to d drive action. but at the end, it is just writing, and its moving at like 700kb a sec.

Scenario:
I have a folder with 200 audio files of various formats. I want to select only the .OGG files whose filenames start with "A".
On XP:
I would sort by filename, select all the "A" files, re-sort by file type, using CTRL and the mouse, I would then deselect non-OGG files.
When I try this on Win 7 my selections are cleared when I re-sort.s there a setting somewhere that I need to change?
I've got a browser search redirect imbedded somewhere in my hosts configuration but can't find the file to edit it out and hijackthis cannot fix it. The c:/windows/system32/etc/hosts is merely a sample and it's not buried in the registry. Where is the file that contains this rubbish?

View 5 Replies View RelatedThe laptop (which was running) was OK (battery just kicked in, obviously). (Win 7 32bit)But the PC (I was working on) wasn't !!! (Win 7 64 bit)When the power came on five minutes later, I restarted the PC.Everything appeared fine, however the program which was open and that I was working in, wouldn't "fire up"....and "windows was trying to find a solution to the problem"....as it does, or rather doesn't.FYI The program (.exe) is a data mining, bridge program (between a data feed to a financial platform. (also "firefox", which also was open, couldn't open either).First I looked at "System Restore" and noted that it said that "Rapport" had updated (at the date and time of the power outage), so I contacted Trusteer via their online chat facility. They said that they have indeed had put an update out recently but knew of no conflicts.
I therefore (with fingers crossed) thought it may just be a conflict with "Rapport", so from "programs" I removed "Rapport", then rebooted, then tried to "fire up" the program again....but it again failed to open or run.Next, I did a "System Restore" that put me back a few days (from the 11th of Nov to the 3rd of Nov).I then once again removed "Rapport" and rebooted. Then (with fingers crossed again) I tried the program once more.Again it failed to open and run.I also tried "firefox"...and this also failed to open and run.Next I removed the program from the computer, rebooted it, then re installed the program...and rebooted. ...but still nothing.
I checked (just in the off chance)that the program had not changed since I last installed it (some 10 month previously) by installing it on the laptop....and it installed just fine, opened and ran as it should. So then I looked looked to investigate futher and ran " sfc/scannow " (as administator), thinking that this would throw up some corrupt files in the system, which would give me a starting point from which to work from........but nothing was found. Everything "appeared" to be clear. By that I mean it came up with no faults at all.I rebooted the computer after this scan (just to add a belt, to the braces, so to speak)....and again, the program will not open or run.So...to recap.I have removed "Rapport", which was the only "update" that had happened.I did a "System Restore" to a date where everything was clear....and everything was running. (and removed Rapport) I removed and reinstalled the program which was (is) affected.
I have a Win 7 64-bit and yesterday, I got the black screen of death on boot. Black screen, blinking cursor right after I boot. I can access the Samsung recovery menu. I figured I'd just backup my data and do system restore or clean reinstall. After hours of backup, I looked to see the details on a popup dialogue and apparently, nothing was backed up because it was unable to access the files on my C: drive and transfer onto an external hard drive. I also tried to backup an image, but that also fails.

I didn't think anything of it until I tried to save an image through Firefox and it wouldn't bring up the prompt to choose a location. Initially I thought it to be exclusive to Firefox, but later I had worked on an Word document and when I tried to Save As... the exact same thing, a flash indicating that it tried to open the location window and that's it. Every program does the exact same thing, no way to bring up a location menu or change directory.

Unfortunately, for one reason or another, my whole cygwin install became horribly buggered up (my home directory was not recognized and I could not access many of my commands/applications that I had installed/built). Now, I figured that I'm going to nuke everything from orbit (just delete the cygwin directory in my C drive) and start from scratch (besides, I would have loved to make an update or two to some of the apps).
