Why does Windows 7 automatically reindex my index search file when I reboot the computer.I have 300,000 files on my computer and it takes two days to rebuild the index. I leave my computer on all the time because I am afraid that by turning it off and on again will cause the indexing function to restart the index. How can I stop this reindexing function from starting on its own.

I was looking for a file when I noticed it was gone. I fired up the Windows search engine and Search Everything, both of which said the file was still there. When I try to open the search result in any media player, it says the file could not be found.I already restarted my system, but both search engines still say the file exists. Is the file still there? I cannot find it with Undelete Plus, but it did find a lot of files that were recently deleted.

I have just installed and updated Windows 7. I spent a day finding my way around. Then I got to work updating my website. And ran into a problem:
The css file is not being accessed. I made and saved the file in the normal way, just as I did in XP. But what works in XP does not work in Windows 7.

I tried using WinZip, a friend said that it's possible to password protect a ZIP file but I am unable to do so. I don't like WinRar and 7Zip much for daily use, so I would like to have an alternative to password protect my folders/files.
I have heard and read about many 3rd party softwares, but all of them create a separate folder in which I have transfer the files, similar to a real life locker. But the kind of software I need is the one which has the ability to right click a folder/file and set a password, and whenever someone clicks on it, the password is asked.
I DO NOT want the folder/file to be invisible, I want it to be visible but protected by a password. built-in or a 3rd party software to do so? I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium (32 bit).

I just built a Jerry-rigged light weight storage computer so I don't have to leave my dev/game comp/volcano on all the time anymore. I also bought a laptop recently as well. What I'd like to do is make the data (on two logical drives to be specific) completely accessible with full privileges to the laptop and this main PC however there are other users on the network that I don't want to share everything with (but still some).I can use PC Anywhere for some things but the end result I'm looking for is a handy couple of links on my desktop to the two raid drives and carry on as though they were still on my comp (and laptop now too), but also not include all users at the same time. (but also have the option to set up sharing for the folders they need access in too)Is this within the capacity of Windows 7? All computers have Win 7 and belong to the same home group.

I am having this same problem: url...Only my files are Adobe Audition files.I followed the steps this guy used. I downloaded Altap Salamader and deleted what I thought was the offending file from the folder, used CCleaner to clear the bin and restarted. I thought I was home-free, but then I realized that it is some other file in that folder. I tried deleting all the files. No go. I tried deleting the folder. No go. I even tried just renaming the folder and it tells me I have to get permission from me. I checked my permissions. I ran as admin. I even enabled the super-admin profile and tried it there.I tried restoring a previous version of the folder and it tells me it's successful, but it remains the same corrupted version.

I recently opened up an external hard drive of mine and attempted to open a specific file that contains video files. I don't know what type of files are contained within this folder, I just know that they are videos of some sort. My issue here is that when I click on the folder windows explorer will immediately freeze and upon clicking anywhere within the window or any other windows explorer window I receive the windows explorer is unresponsive with the usual restart, close and wait options. I have disabled thumbnails and there are no DivX related files on my computer and none found with shellexviewer. Although selecting it causes crashes, through my antivirus I am able to locate the folder and scan it though I can not open it.

Just formatted a laptop, reinstalled windows7 and all of the drivers. My laptop is an Acer Aspire 7738G-6006.
Here's the problem: To get the volume slider on the keyboard to work, I need to install Launch Manager. I found the download on the website and extracted it. When I run setup.exe though, absolutely nothing happens. It doesn't even show up for a split second in task manager.
I tried the same file on another computer and it ran just fine. I installed .Net framework as well as the C++ Runtime Distributable. No change. I've tried to run in compatibility as well as an administrator. I also tried Dependency Walker, it had this to say:
I tried downloading the new IE, no change, even tried DLing the DLL and putting it in the folder and that had no change either.

I am having trouble with windows 7 because I am trying specific words from US English to UK English (E.G. "appearance and personalization").
C:WindowsSystem32en-US (Shell32.dll.mui)
Now, because of the windows checksum. It will not allot me to successfully edit it without it reversing the changes. I'm trying to teach my Windows to learn proper English. I have been trying to use WfpReplace but the server to download seems to be down. [URL]. Is there any way to do this in a more simplified way?

since two days i am trying to copy a exe file from a usb stick to my machine.
i tried everything. completely disabled uac, logged on as "superadmin", gave all permissions that i could think of. but still.
the strange thing is that explorer does not even display the icon correctly. it shows only the "generic" exe icon.
everytime i try to copy the file windows tells me that i do not have the permission to make changes to the file.
btw:
- the file is not broken, nor is the usb stick. i tried it on another Windows 7 machine and it works just fine.
- tried to copy it on D: drive too... same problem.
- zipped the file. copied the zipped file successfully to the drive but when unzipping it the folder is empty without an error message.
- turned off defender and AV. just in case it thinks it's a bad file.
well, i never had this problem before. any ideas?
edit: i forgot to mention that this file on the usb is in the same folder with several other files which i can copy without any problems.

I am about to transfer all the files pertaining to a project, copy them onto an external hard drive and give the drive to my client. There are 4 .VEG files (Sony Vegas files, my video editing software) that I would like to be protected. Meaning that only me can open those files. So that the client can't simply hire another dude with the same software and freely work on the project on his end. Actually I highly doubt that my client is even remotely capable of doing something like that but this is a security protocol I wanted to implement for a while and now is a good place to start. So is there a way to password protect those files or denying access altogether?

I've reviewed several different examples of how forfiles works. To set the stage, I need to automatically remove files with a file extension of .0 followed by numbers that increment and these files would be 7 days or older. Unfortunately, none of the examples or forfiles /? usage explains how to specify what I need done to file extensions that end with .0xxxxx
Here is what I have so far:
Code: echo on
rem Remove stats-bin.0* files older than 7 days
forfiles /p "c:Program FilesMySQLMySQL Server 4.1data" /m stats-bin.0* /c "cmd /c del /Q @file /d -7
rem pause Within the data directory, there are stats-bin.index files, stats.0XXXXX files and others. The goal here is to only remove those files that begin with stats-bin.<numbers>
Currently, this script isn't doing anything. Trying to troubleshoot what I'm doing wrong here. If anyone has another forum they frequent for Windows script

i just recieved my computer back from service because my hard drive needed to be replaced. i did not notice this until just now, but my system user name was not changed back to the default "user" after they had finished the service.so my question is, how do I change the file name of my Windows 7 user folder? im talking about the one in C/Users. one is called "public" and the other one - which should have a lock next to it, it the one I want to change. I do not want this file to be called "[tech support person's name]" but either "user" or my own name.I have changed one user name via Control Panel/User Accounts/Change your account name, but it did not rename that file.Is it wise to rename this folder, or am I just stuck with a random person's name as the name of my user file?

When I was setting up my computer for the first time, I misspelled my user name. When I go to My Computer > Local Disk [C:] > Users, I am unable to change the name of my User file.
I have corrected how the user name appears when logging in, via User Accounts, but this "source" seems un-editable. It appears in several places, when I install new programs etc. and I know that there must be a way to fix this.
How can I change the name of the User file folder?

I'm probably using the worst browser, Internet Explorer. I used to use Firefox, but I was concerned with privacy issues once they teamed up with Google so I went back to Explorer. Two weeks ago I updated to version 9 of Internet Explorer and I'm constantly getting connection issues which I've never had before. What are the better browsers when it comes to both privacy and security?

I recently bought my wife a T510i HP laptop. She felt it was too big for her and wanted a smaller one. I took over the laptop, I had initially set it up for her and had named it as she had wanted turing initial set up.. Example: Computer > Local Disk > Users > MyWifethe mywife is the locked folder that I want to change to my nameHow in the world do I go about doing this? I will do a complete system restore if I must. I realize that I'd have to reload a bunch of software, etc. and my music. I don't mind that but am conconcerned that if that was the case in the restore that the old user name would be put back in.

I have a batch file that I used on XP to run an MMC that I created for common management tasks. In the MMC I have the ability to run regedit as a root forest domain privileged user (for remote system registry editing), password resets (using AD) remote computer management, and several web links for common sites the team uses. I did this so it was all in one place and it worked awesome in Win XP. When I run the batch file it reports that the directory could not be found.[CODE]
I have verified that runas is in the same place as in XP, as well as MMC. I have run the batch file with elevate access as well as run the command prompt with elevated access (in fact that was copied from an elevated command prompt). The account I'm running it on has admin rights on the box, though UAC is set, I own both the account this was run from and the "root forest" privileged account, this account is NOT a domain admin. This is all being done on Win 7 Pro in a large enterprise domain environmentthis batch file worked and still works on Win XP in the same environment.
