Changing The Locked User File?
Apr 1, 2011
I recently bought my wife a T510i HP laptop. She felt it was too big for her and wanted a smaller one. I took over the laptop, I had initially set it up for her and had named it as she had wanted turing initial set up.. Example: Computer > Local Disk > Users > MyWifethe mywife is the locked folder that I want to change to my nameHow in the world do I go about doing this? I will do a complete system restore if I must. I realize that I'd have to reload a bunch of software, etc. and my music. I don't mind that but am conconcerned that if that was the case in the restore that the old user name would be put back in.

When I was setting up my computer for the first time, I misspelled my user name. When I go to My Computer > Local Disk [C:] > Users, I am unable to change the name of my User file.
I have corrected how the user name appears when logging in, via User Accounts, but this "source" seems un-editable. It appears in several places, when I install new programs etc. and I know that there must be a way to fix this.
How can I change the name of the User file folder?

I changed the values in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionProfileList in order to move the default user locations to my second partition. I then created a new user profile but when I try to login I get the message 'The User Profile Service failed the login'. When I set these values back to normal, new accounts work fine but I really want my user accounts on the second partition.

I have only one user account in the login screen. Recently, when I try to log in after my laptop has gone to power saver mode my password is rejected (initial login @ startup is not a problem). I try multiple times being very careful and it always gets rejected, every time, for 3 days now. It says "locked" under my account icon, above the password entry field. I hit the "switch user" button and the screen refreshes showing my icon and says "logged on" above the password entry field. I can then successfully enter my password (excatly the same as I did before) and it is accepted. CAP LOCK is off! Nothing changes accept the word "locked" changes to "logged on".
What is happening and how can I get rid of this annoying feature/bug. I have not installed new software. I already changed my account password to see if that would help. I also deleted the ASP.net account. Neither one did anything. After reading I probably should have keep the ASP.net account..

My husband and I just got a new desktop, I originally planned on sharing a user account but since we're both in school I figured to have our own user accounts just to keep our files more separated and everything. So I created a second user account for me. I then realized that since he uses MY iTunes account, it makes sense that we use a shared music folder. Somehow I effed up my folders, the Public Music folder in particular. The only way I could see how to fix it was to restore it. Well that fixed the music folder problem, but it restored the computer back to before I had set up my own user login. No problem, I went back in and re-created it. Now my problem is that the user accounts are just fine, but the user folder from my first account is still in the the C drive under "users" but technically there is no user account that's attached to it. And of course, the folder is locked. I tried to delete it, but got a popup saying I was about to delete a system file so How to I remedy this situation???

I've set up a secondary account on my Windows 7 machine and I need to find out how to disable the switch user thing. In Windows XP, I could hit winflag+L and switch user as I would instantly be taken to the user list.In Windows 7, for some reason they had to complicate everything. When I hit winflag+L it just displays a picture of my account and a "Switch User" button, which for me serves no purpose what so ever.Is there any way I can regain Windows XP's user switch functionality in Windows 7, where winflag+L takes me directly to the user list on the login screen?

I've recently picked up a new hard drive from a buddy of mine.I've managed to change my computer name and user account name. However, the user folder in "My Computer -> Local Disk C: -> Users" is locked, and I am unable to change the name.It doesn't cause any problems, I just want to find a way to change it if its possible. As well, I've also set permissions, but it only allows me to access the files, which is not the problem, since I only want to change the name of the User Account Folder.

Yesterday I was having a problem getting rid of some bugs. I posted the problem in a malware forum on another site and then did all the scans that I was supposed to do. The funny thing is that right after I posted that thread, I found bugs with ad-aware and I was finally able to quarantine and restart. My only problem now is that my folders were locked (My Videos, My Pictures, My Music) possibly from running scans. I am not sure if they were locked from ccleaner or combofix or Mgtools. But they are locked and I seriously need to unlock them.I also have a desktop.ini file that mysteriously popped up after I ran the scans. I am the administrator of this computer. I cannot access certain files like My Videos, My Pictures, and My Music.

I recently set up a new Windows 7 machine and, when asked for the name to be given to the users folder, I let it use the default name USER. I set up an account with my name on it but the folder name is still USER. It's locked and Rename isn't listed in the options menu displayed when I right-click it. How can I change the folder name?

I changed my user account to the Windows 7 Super Admin account because I am easily annoyed when a computer tries to lock me out of areas :P I am completely okay with this and have no issues. However, many people keep telling me all about how this is a very bad thing to do, e.g.if I get a virus the virus has full control of my system. I dont disagree with this and I can understand it, I just find the benefits of super admin outweigh the risk considering I generally know what I am doing, how to avoid viruses, etc.
I have considered though swapping back to a regular admin account and enabling UAC, however there is so much data, programs installed, program preferences, etc stored on my user, last time I changed it was about a month before things were back to normal. Does anyone know how I could just change the permissions of my current account (the super admin account)?

I have problems deleting files and folders which were created for temporary purposes. Usually folders with a temporary picture collection, which I have created just to get it zipped and mailed. Since I use Picasa (which is usually open), there are systems files which are created automatically and stay locked for quite some time, even when all the pictures were erased. Is there any quick and simple way to delete locked files in Windows 7?

I have an HP machine that came with Vista. When I got this machine it had some major hardware problems these were fixed.I then had to replace th OS so I went with Win 7. The OS installed fine but I used my name during the install process that was ok because I was going to keep it. Then a very close friend of mine needed a computer because her old XP had died. I decided to give her the HP. I went into system and chaged the, computer name, and control panel, User's and changed that name both area's show that name. But when I go into my computer, C: drive, users my name is still there and I can not change it. The only solution I know might be to get into the regedit and change it there.

I build, and then support many computers for my friends and family. I have recently started making them feel a bit more "manufactured" by using a factory-style recovery option (press F9 at boot to enter recovery / uses a hidden recovery partition etc...).
The issue I have though, is I often get asked to "wipe" someone's computer following a virus/malware infestation (and yes, I do supply AV, but that isn't always enough).
So, I use Sysprep to install all additional software, drivers etc... but the one problem I have is that I like to have, and usually always configure PC's to store items like Documents/Pictures/Music/Videos etc... on a seperate partition.
The problem is, when I configure this in Sysprep - the settings are lost when the user completes OOBE.
Ideally, I do not want to move the entire "Users" directory, I just want the libraries to never look at any folders on the C: drive, only the ones on D: (D:\%USERNAME%Documents etc...).
I want it so that when files "detect" where to save, it locates the appropriate directory on the D: drive, so they dont have to always manually locate the folders.
The reason I dont want the entire "Users" folder on D: is that following a restore or 2, it will get messy...
I would like to either automate this during setup, or would happily take a manual approach during Sysprep - as long as it applied these settings to all users as and when they are created.
I would like the cleanest way to do this, ideally without junctions/symlinks.

I have a problem trying to change the program associated with a particular file extension. I was trying out different programs to find out how they could handle that particular file type, setting them as the default program and trying to open the file. But after setting the default to one program in particular, it seemed to "lock" the file type,This is true only for that particular file extention, all other extensions have this option enabled and the association can be changed. If I open the default programs control panel, and try to choose a different program to be associated with that particular extension, the entry does not change after choosing the program and clicking "OK" - it stays at the previous setting.

I've created a slideshow file, using FastStone Image Viewer 4.3, and pictures I took myself in our back yard. The file is *.exe and self-executes correctly on my computer. I've scanned it with MSE and it's clean and virus-free.I want to send it to our daughter, using my Hotmail account, as a normal attachment to a normal email msg. But Hotmail blocks it completely since it's an executable file type.So I tried to just rename a copy of it on my hard drive, first, to *.txt. But when I select the *.exe filename and then click Rename, I can't seem to get access to the extension part of the current file name; the exe after the dot. So is there a way I can change the file type in windows from "application" to a type Hotmail so windows won't block as an email attachment? Then tell the recipient to change it back to *.exe on her end?

I just did a clean install of windows 7 and now I have a problem with file associations. AVI files for instance are set to open with WMP but I want them to open with BSplayer. If I click "open with" I have the recommended options MWP and WMC but Bsplayer isn't there nor under "other programs". If I browse to bsplayer and click it nothing happens. It wont change anything.
Now with .srt files for example. They are no set to open with any program, and I dont even have an "open with" option. If I go to properties and try to change the file association I have notepad on the recommended programs but if I select it no thing happens. Is there a way to completely reset the file associations or to fiz this issue. I went to the menu were you are supposed to be able to set associations with all your programs but my installed programs like utorrent bsplayer and that stuff don't even appear there.
