I have a 60GB SSD that I have my operating system on and I have a 1TB regular Hard Drive that I wanted to have all my basic programs on. Once the operating system/drivers/etc were installed on the SSD drive I changed the registry so that the default filed installation location was the 1TB drive instead (because some files/programs don't ask what location you'd like to install them to). Afterwards I restarted the computer after installing a program. Now tons of my system 32 system files/programs wont open even though they're there. I get an error message saying "Windows could not find 'C:Windowssystem32egedt32.exe' Please make sure you typed the name correctly, and try again."
This is the second time it has done this. The first time I had installed a few more programs before restarted so I thought maybe somehow I got a virus that disabled some of my registry permissions. But all this stuff I can't open IS still there, but because I changed this the ProgramDefDir registry now it can't find this stuff. After this first time when I thought it was a virus I just went ahead and reformatted and reinstalled windows, but I noticed as soon as I restarted after changing the registry the way I wanted it before, the same problem occured. So, 2 questions come from this: first, how can I fix this? i.e. changed the registry back WITHOUT the default regedit program as it wont let me use it.. second: How can I do what I want efficiently without creating this problem? i.e. OS on SSD and every other program, music, and such on the 1TB drive?

Somehow .txt extension got associated with the Registry Editor and it cannot be changed. Namely, I click on Change program, select the editor I want to use, but the association does not change. Furthermore, the Always use the selected program... checkbox is disabled.

I've been meaning to look into the fact that I couldn't access my Task Manager anymore at all or even when I try to run regedit I get messages like "Registry editing has been disabled by your computer administrator" even though I am one of two of the only administrators for this machine.

Assume I work currently with MS Word and/or an text editor like wordpad. Then (suddenly) the system crashes with bluescreen.A Minidump is automatically created and saved in a Minidump file. After restart I am asked whether I want to send this minidump for further investigation to MS.Hmm, I wonder whether this Minidump file contains the full memory content. And if the memory content contains the current MS Word resp. current open file if editor. Both could contain sensitive business information which I don't want to pass outside. Is this the case

While windows was uploading some updates yesterday, I cleaned my registry using Iolo's system mechanic tool and that's where the problems started. (I already read and understood your message: don't use those tools and stay out of your registry. A lesson I learned too late, unfortunately.)My computer rebooted and after a couple of minutes I noticed the message: " failure configuring windows features reverting changes ". I managed to bypass this loop by running in safe mode and recover my computer to a restore point in the past. This only worked partially: I get windows to run in normal mode but I get this message: "system failed while restoring the registry from the restore point. Restore point damaged or was deleted during restore". So it didn't restore but I can get into my windows now.So I don't get the 'reverting change loop' anymore, so I can access my computer but what's the mess? Well my computer is slow as hell.Like mentioned above, I already looked around on this forum and wrote down what I already tried. [code] My computer is terrible slow because of a registry defrag/optimization of a registry tool (in combination with windows update) --> I need to find a way to get back my old registry files but system recovery ain't working.

I just switch from MS Win XP 32-bit. but it seem that MS-DOS editor in MS Win 7 64-bit is no longer existed. so is it relevant to keep searching another edit.com n put it into this environment MS-DOS at system32. I should just go for another 3rd party editor? The edit.com from my Win XP 32-bit actually a 32 or 16 bit?

Quote: Visual BCD is an advanced GUI version of Windows bcdedit utility. It is the first GUI utility to implement full editing of the BCD store. No more mystery behind the BCD store. The user can see and edit every detail in a well known explorer like structure. The power of bcdedit by simple clicks and keystrokes. To create a new Windows 7/Vista/XP/VHD Loader just do a simple click.Create boot sector(Linux, Ubuntu, Mac OS X) Loader one click plus extraction of MBR or PBR with dd utility for Windows. Now with automatic creation of missing Windows 7/Vista/XP/VHD loader entries (since version 0.9.2).The user can create and change the value of more than 120 properties of BCD objects by simple edits. Other similar utilities like VistaBootPro and EasyBCD give access to not more than 30 properties. All used constants, names, objects and elements are as defined by Microsoft. That means 100% compatibility.

Is there any other way to run the Turbo C editor on Windows 7 without using DOSBOxSomething(some tweak or emulator) that runs it only by a double click as in Windows XP and earlier Win versions. With DOS Box, I have to mount the drive every time and retrieving graphics output is tedious.

Is there an easy way to make Notepad my default editor? Some how Wordpad is default. I read where I could go into the registry and change it there but I am not comfortable with tapering with the registry. With XP, I could change it very easily. As a side note, presently in Windows 7, when I save text in Wordpad, I normally chose a simple, plain text 'save as' only but it saves my work in the fanciest rich text format with full headers? Have saved tries in the other Wordpad choices but I always get the fanciest text format. I bring up simple Notepad and save my work. However, when I call it up again, it is in the fancy rich text Wordpad format? I would just as soon save my simple notes in Notepad.

I am very computer literate (Ex Wang System Engineer) but this has me stumped. I often get BSOD when running the above programs. No other programs give me problems. I installed trial version of Elements 10 to see if that might work, it crashed once. Since then today I have not been able to get either to crash. System is I7 930 chip on a Gigabyte m/b (GA-X58A-UD3R), 4Gb ram (2 banks). In the past I have swapped banks, but no change.
OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. Original OEM.

I have recently accidentally converted my disk from basic to dynamic. I realised that doing this is bad because it does not allow me to install other operating systems on other partitions. After browsing google for a couple days i came across that you can change your disk by using a hex editor called HxD. I thought this was great so I downloaded HxD. I continued to the next step "Go to the offset 01C2 and change to a 7" here there should be a 47 (Dynamic disk)...... It was a zero (0).

I want to alter the attachment manager in Local Group Policy Editor, but when I open it up, I am constantly greeted with a warning message that says One or more ActiveX control could not be displayed because either: 1) Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page, or 2) You have blocked a published of one of the controls. The odd thing is I am not trying to access anything online, this is merely a Windows policy editor access from my machine. I am wanting to change the attachment settings to stop warning messages from appearing when certain filetypes are unzipped.

I have been using WIN 7 for some time now and , until lately , had no reason to backup the Registry. However due to a problem I had with MS Office , it became advisable to take the precaution of creating a Registry Backup before proceeding with some changes there. It seems the Registry Backup procedure described in these Forums is more involved than it was in XP if I have interpreted the instructions correctly. whether such a Backup can be done by simply going into Regedit and , assuming a full Registry Backup id desired, , right clicking on the "Computer" icon there and selecting "EXPORT" and then choosing a name for the resulting file and a destination to save it ?
