Have A Window That Is "closed/minimized" To The System Tray?
Nov 17, 2010
I am currently having difficulty with rocketdock. Before you think "this doesn't belong on this forum", let me explain what I am trying to do, and then what I need to know.I am trying to find a way to make it so that if I have a window that is "closed/minimized" to the system tray (because I use taskbar hider, I need to), I am able to see them on rocketdock and actually use the "right-click" options (because if I try to right-click the icon for a shortcut, for example steam, it just brings up the rocketdock options instead. So what I need, although I'm not sure if it will work, is to know if there is a folder location for the "system tray", or if you know a different method that could allow me to do what I mentioned above.

Our company runs its phones on a standard corporate IP phone system. We have a piece of software that runs on each computer to allow that person to look up extensions, place calls, manage their voice mail and so on. Unfortunately this piece of software only runs on Windows XP, not Windows 7. I was able to bypass the OS problem by running it in XP Mode on a computer and everything was going fine until someone tried to dock the bar.
In XP you can move the bar to one edge of the screen and it'll dock itself there. In Windows 7 it appears that trying to dock the window minimized it to the notification area and now it wont open up again. My question is, how do I get it back out of the notification area? The icon for the software is there and I can right-click on it to gain an action menu but there's no way to bring the window back up to access the voice mail buttons, type in names to call or the like. How I can pull a piece of software running in XP Mode out of the notification area?

The problem occurs for some program when installing or running.. In installation window the window is minimised as always and some option get hidden, like they cut off only slightly showing a portion of selection button.. Like when installing program there shows selection button like, NEXT to carry on installation and CANCEL button to stop installation. It happens like NEXT button partially showing and other selection button cut off outer of that minimised windows.. Same problem with apps which use by default minimised window. Some selection option cutoff.. Though there no option to make those apps maximised.

I installed Windows 7 on new computer. Some programs start up minimized most of the time - but not always. At least Mozilla Thunderbird and Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 keep doing that to name a few. The shortcut properties have "Run" as "Normal window" for both programs. I think I've also tried closing them with Ctrl pressed as suggested somewhere.
As for other similar problems, I get occasional problems with opening windows from the taskbar groups. The window shows up nicely when hovering over the thumbnail picture of the taskbar group, but when I select it, it just flashes on the top and then disappears / goes back behind other windows. Alt-tabbing seems to work flawlessly, but it'd be nice to be able to use the taskbar too.
I've noticed later that Alt-Tabbing doesn't work always either. They suggested me to try and pin software to taskbar at bleeping computer. Both Thunderbird and Premiere have started normally when launched with the pinned icon instead of the desktop shortcuts. That's not the real solution though and the problem remains at least with Windows Media Player. It goes often minimized when launched by double clicking a video file on explorer.
I did a search on your site and found Toasty's post (Programs start Minimized, will *NOT* maximize.). Also it said in some post that you should press Alt when closing. I'll try that next time the problem occurs, but I doubt it's the solution as the programs sometimes open normally and sometimes don't. Either way there's also the problem with the taskbar...

Why do I get this?. Desktop Window manager stopped working and was closed? I am using motherboard P4S8X with Windows 7 just install. And 2 gb memory.
It maybe a driver issue with the MOBO or some other device. Try and update the MOBO drivers to start with and see if that does anything. If worse comes to worse, you can do a start repair by booting from the W7 DVD.
I was actually thinking this was more specific to the video driver, as DWM has close ties to it...

I get this problem or error "Desktop Window Manager stopped working and was closed" every time I stay logged on but "switch users". When I come back to my user account, there are two messages on my taskbar that both say "Desktop Window Manager stopped working and was closed". I have uninstalled and reinstalled my Nvidia driver and updated to the latest driver version. I have even went to "task manager" and located the dwm.exe and made a dump file.

Recently, with no system changes, suspicious downloads, or drops in recent history, my 6 Month old Clevo build began exhibiting two very bizarre symptoms:
1) Upon booting, Windows will start normally ,up until the mouse is rendered before the log in screen appears, then the system seems to power down. However, upon pressing the power button, the computer resumes booting right from where it left off as if it had entered a very rapid hibernation mode.
2) When the lid is closed during normal use, even when the system is not set to sleep or hibernate upon a lid closing, the system will hang permanently, with indicator lights like caps lock getting stuck either on or off and the hard drive light not turning on. This requires a hard reset to fix.
I have scanned memory, boot sectors, and the entire hard drive for malicious programs like worms, packers, and rootkits with Avast and Kapersky boot time scans to no avail. The system behaves normally otherwise, except during boot or lid closing. No overheating, screen flashing, or abnormal system processes are occurring. Though I have not yet checked the exact temps or checked the contents of rundll.I have a hunch it is the motherboard, but I don't have the screwdrivers to check or try to reset the SODIMMS.I have found a few questionable errors in the event log, but no strange processes in system resource manager. This is transcript of said questionable error log with all events from past 7 days (as of 11/27/2011) (with said issue arising on the 25th)The Download is 215 Kb compressed and 5 Mb uncompressed with over 7,000 events. On an unrelated note, the event log reports the processor getting underpowered, is this just a momentary thing during bootup or something that could hinder performance?

Following the latest windows update (possibly a coincidence) I now have two instances of my cd drive showing in the notification area.
These relate to the Vaio power management. I did think that it might be a cache problem so I ran the icon cache clearer found here Notification Area Icons - Reset
But after a reboot they are both back. In the task manager there are two instances of SPMgr.exe

I have a fully updated Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 and sometimes some icons don't appear in the system tray when I boot up my PC. Then I have to reboot it in order to get them to show up. They are all set to "Show icon and notifications" in the notification are.So why is that happening and how can I solve it so that they would appear every time I boot up my PC?

I'm connected wirelessly with no connection issues, but the system tray icon is the one for a LAN connection with a red x on it and not the wireless icon. I noticed if I flip the switch to turn of the networking adapter it reverts to a wireless icon but of course with no connection.

I found this process in my system tray and I have no clue what it is. I didn't put it there, and I can't identify it in Task Manager's process list. It showed up as far as I know yesterday. I was told by my friend who is a computer person (works at a place) to run combofix, as well as MBAM, and I did.

So I want to hide an icon that is showing in my system tray. It's not really necessary to be there, and there is no option to not show it there. This is for a launch manager on a laptop. I've gone to customize and changed it to "hide icons and notifications" for this particular program, but it still shows. is there a way to get rid of this?

I have a problem that's backwards to most questions that I've seen. I have two windows, say Window A and B. Buttons for both show on my taskbar. In the past, I've been able to toggle between the two by clicking on the taskbar button for the window that is on top. So, if window A is on top, I could click on its taskbar button and that would minimize window A to the taskbar, showing window b. When I wanted to see window A, again, I could click on its taskbar button, and it would again display window A on top of window b.Now, when I click the taskbar button for window a, the window minimizes to the System Tray, instead of the taskbar. The toggle function that I found so handy is broken.

So I installed RealTemp 3.40 and was exploring the options for it and stumbled accross the System Tray options where it displays the temps for your GPU/Cores on the taskbar next to the Tray. So I put them on there but didn't realize they disappear when you close the program. I could run the program minimized for this but I'd rather not, just another window to cycle through since I use Aero so much.Does anyone know of a way to get these temps to stay on the bar/sys tray without having to run the program minimized?

I have noticed that when I close some programs, like HardDiskSentinal (by clicking the red "X" in the upper right corner) that they do not actually close, but instead minimize into the system tray. I was wondering if there was a way to make any application do this. If possible I would like to do this without installing another application.

I recently installed the latest bluetooth drivers from the ASUS website for my P8Z68-V PRO because I was getting an unknown device showing up in my device management which, by process of elimination, I knew was onboard bluetooth. Now, on startup I get two bluetooth icons in my system tray; however, when I hover over one it dissapears - but it always appears when I reboot.I couldn't seem to find the root of the second bluetooth icon. There is only one bluetooth device now and no unknown since I installed the driver and I can't seem to find anything in programs list etc. to remove. Why is the icon appearing and how do I eliminate the problem? (it still apears if I select hide icon and notifications in customize system tray)

In this tutorial, we'll take a look at the much improved Notification Area (or System Tray as it is commonly referred to). The Notification Area has become increasingly cluttered on many systems as more and more programs place their notification icons at the bottom of the screen. Windows 7 streamlines the Notification Area and significantly reduces clutter, as you'll see in this video.

Recently I noticed that two unknown icons now show up in my system tray, having icon graphics of "A" "9". Double clicking on them, right-clicking, or simply hovering my mouse over them unfortunately does nothing -- I don't know what they are. I'm concerned they could be something malicious. Please see the attached screenshot that shows these 2 icons. I've also attached another screenshot showing all processes in the Task Manager.

What I'd like is for a program that normally appears in the system tray to show in the taskbar at all times it is running so i can easily see it and use the exit functions etc.Specifically for Steam - (X) minimizes to system tray and hides activity in the task bar. I don't mind if this results in 2 icons showing (1 for an active window and 1 for the process) I know you can do the same from system tray for this particular program, but I just don't have the habit to look there for anything other than system background applications.'m running Windows 7 Professional x64 and am comfortable tinkering with registry and system files if needed. So the questions are:1/ Can a system tray icon be permanently moved to the taskbar applications area?2/ If not, can a background process be assigned a taskbar icon when active?
