Can I Install Two Win 7 In Two Partition On Same Pc ?

ive an hd with 2 partitions, c and e, ive installed Windows 7 in e: can i make a second installation in c: with Windows 7? if i make a new installation of Windows 7 in c: i will be able to boot both os (the old Windows 7 in e: and the new one in c

what im afraid of is that after installing the new Windows 7 in c: i will loose the boot option to log in the old previous Windows 7 installation in e: but im pretty shure that i should be able to log in both Windows 7 cause the new installation will retain the second os boot option.. theres someone can confirm?

Install On Partition That Contains Win 7 RC
I know that I could not upgrade Windows 7 RC to Windows 7 (both are/were 64-bit). When I received the Windows 7 DVDs from Amazon I booted from the DVD, selected Custom install, and proceeded to install.  It seems to work OK, except for one problem involving Quicken (both versions 2008 and 2010) crashing when I attempt to open a Quicken data file.  (This crash occurs before it even displays the File Open dialog, so a corrupted file would not be the issue).

My question for this forum is: Did I do the right thing to select "Custom Install"?  Are there any remnants of the RC release left in the newly installed OS (I assumed there would not be - if there are, that means I have a unholy combination of released and beta software, a recipe for trouble)?   Should I have used the "Advanced" install functions to simply reformat the drive and thus ensure that no traces of the RC release remain (I didn't look at "Advanced" that closely, but assume that it supports that)? I did one unusual thing, which I don't believe should cause problems.

I have a client with legacy 16-bit software who might want to go to Windows 7 (32-bit).  Therefore, I first installed Windows 7 32-bit (using the procedure described above).   I did not activate it but simply did a few tests, then proceeded to install Windows 7 64-bit, again using the procedure described above.

Before installing the 64-bit version, I renamed the Windows.Old (created by the 32-bit install) to Windows7RC.old, so that I would not lose any information.  Disturbingly, the new Windows.Old directory (Program Files (x86) subdirectory) contains remnants of programs that I never installed on the short-lived Windows 7 32-bit installation (specifically Visual Studio).

New Partition To Install Win 2008 R2
I've Toshiba Notebook and Win 7 Home Premium x64 OS installed on it. I want to have Win Server 2008 R2 x64 also in my PC. I tried two options:

1 - Made VHD and tried to install in that, but it didn't. Gave error that Win 2008 cannot be installed on VHD.

2 - Created new partition but got error message that you already have max number of partitions, so can't make new partitions.

What do I do? Is it the problem due to Home Premium edition? If yes, shall I first upgrade my primary OS to Ultimate or Professional? I've already checked my PC for upgrade compatibility by Microsoft Upgrade Advisory and it says that my PC can be upgraded to Win 7 Prof or Ultimate.

Please suggest what do I do?

My ultimate aim is to run Win Server 2008 R2 x64 on my laptop - either in VHD form or in hard disk.

Win 7 Wont Install On Partition
I'm trying to install a fresh copy of 7 RC onto a separate partition on my hard drive. Everything will go fine until I select the partition. This is the message that pops up above the next button:

"System was unable to create or locate an existing system partition. See setup file log for more info."

I don't know why it's popping up this message. I create a new 50GB partition in Vista (per Vista forum) and formatted to NTFS. Am I suppose to right click and mark as an active partition?

I have ACHI enable in my bios. I've also disable that and still a no go. I had 7 beta on with no problems.

Update #2: So I redownloaded 7 and burn it again at the slowest speed, still a no go.

Update #3: So I try to install 7 RC from within Vista. Everything checks out and it will let me select the partition that I want to install it on. I did not know that you can install a new OS onto a new partition from within Vista. So install is going as planned.

Install Same OS (Win 7 Pro 64) To A New Partition
I have a new Dell Studio 1747 with Win 7 Pro 64.

I would like to do a fresh install of the same OS (Win 7 Pro 64) to a new partition to get rid of all the 'bloat ware' that came with my system. I want to keep the factory partition and OS in the event that I have problems with the fresh install.

Would I be correct in assuming that this case would be similar to installing XP to dual boot with an existing Windows 7?

Do I need to worry about losing the ability to boot to Dell's diagnostics located in a separate partition on the same drive?

Merge Or Delete Partition With Win 7 Install
I will be upgrading my Vista-64 bit OS to Windows 7 when I get my pre-ordered copy in late October. The laptop currently has an used partition to the left of the Vista OS partition (as seen by Disk Management). When I install Windows 7 will I be able to delete and/or merge those two partitions?

Install Win 7 To A Partition On A Seperate Hard Drive
I have Vista 64 bit and would like to install Win7 to a partition on a separate drive, I have the Win7 dvd and can boot from that BUT I don't want to mess up my Vista at all (already had to reinstall after a mistake). What's the safest way to install Win7 without risking my Vista ? (And not using a virtualpc). I've just installed EasyBCD in case I need that.

Install Win 7 RC But Problem With Vista Hard Drive Partition
I am having a pretty big problem in my mind, I am trying to install the Windows 7 RC. I first tried installing it on my external hard drive because I was nervous about putting it on my laptops hard drive, but it didn't work. So now I am being forced to partition my hard drive and put it on but the problem is. I have a 160GB hard drive, and had a 10GB partition there when I bought the laptop and it was there for recovery etc, so I deleted that and was going to extend it but I wasn't able to.

So I clicked on my main partition (c) and clicked shrink but it would only go down 3GB. And tried again but it said shrink to 0, so I wasn't able to shrink it any more. I tried defragging, turning off recovery points etc etc, and I looked it up and tried a lot of things and I know its because of a file(s) that can't be moved or something, and want to know if I can get past this? Or at least try installing it on the 10 GB partition (will it work, do I really need 16GB?)

Unattended Install - Win 7 RTM - Can't Format Or Partition
I just downloaded Win 7 RTM from Technet. I also downloaded Windows AIK for Windows 7 as well. I have spent hours trying figure out how to use the AIK, and finally after much reading I thought I had got the autounattend.xml right. The problem I'm facing is that the my unattended installation isn't formatting or partitioning my hard drive according to the settings within Autounattend.xml file.

Which means every time I have tried running my unattended install, the old files from my previous Vista/7 OS Windows and Program files, are moved into Windows.old folders. Notes:

The setup and unattended installation is working , as I haven't had to touch or type anything after I've run setup.exe from the Win7 DVD. The account, computer name are all being set. I haven't encountered any errors during the installation process.

Logical Partition Created By Win 7 Vanishes When Boot To WinXp Partition
Summary:
A logical partition created by Win-7 was deleted when I booted to a partition with WinXp on the same drive.

More info:
My development computer has multiple drives with multiple partitions.

Drive A: WD-300-gb-Velociraptor (Model H)
Primary Partition 1: 32gb Win7600-64-bit
P.P. 2: 32gb Vista-Sp2-64-bit
P.P. 3: 20gb WinXpPro-Sp3-32-bit
Logical partition 4: 100gb data
Logical partition 5: 102gb data (vanishes when boot to P.P. 3)

Drive B: WD-300-gb-Velociraptor (Model G)
Primary Partition 1: 32gb Win7600-64-bit
P.P. 2: 20gb WinXpPro-Sp3-32-bit
P.P. 3: 230gb data

Drive C: Intel 160gb G2 SSD
Primary Partition 1: 32gb Win7600-64-bit
P.P. 2: 20gb WinXpPro-Sp3-32-bit
P.P. 3: 100gb data

Drive D: WD-1.5tb-Green
Primary Partition 1: 32gb Win7600-64-bit
P.P. 2: 1500gb Data

Some of the partitions were created with WinXp, and some with Win-7. I don't recall exactly which were created with what o.s. However, I think the 5 partitions created on Drive-A (the Model H velociraptor) were created with Win-7, but I'm not sure.

When I booted to the WinXp partition on Drive-A, after a period of time, the 5th partition vanished. I was unable to recover data directly, but I had a backup. However, I was unable to create a logical partition with WinXp. I got a vague message when attempting to format the partition about:

"An unexpected wrror has occurred. Check the System Event Log for more information on the error. Close the Disk Management console, then restart Disk Management or restart the computer."

There was no info in the Event Log.

I was able to create the logical partition with Win-7, and copy the data back to the 5th partition. However, when I booted again to WinXp, the partition vanished again.

Some questions:

* Am I doing something wrong?

* Is it not advised to "mix and match" partitions created with Win-7 and WinXp?

* Are SimpleDisks created with Win-7 incompatible with WinXp? Or perhaps "fragile"?

* Is it best to not have more than 4 primary partitons on a drive?

* Is it preferred to not use logical-partitions with Win-7?

How To Move Win 7 Partition To Vista Partition ?
I got a disk drive with 3 partitions...

1 - vista 64 (50GB)

2 - win 7 64 (30GB)

3 - data (80GB)

I want to move win 7 installation to vista partition and extend partition 3 with freed partition 2.

-I though to do this

-Backup win 7 to external drive

-boot from cd installation

-choose to restore win 7 in partition 1

-After it boots correctly, resize partition 3 adding partition 2.

I realized that boot files are in partition 1, when I tried in windows 7 to backup system (partition 2) it want sto backup full partition 1, because it's part of system and partition 1 is considered critical.

Any procedure to accomplish this?

Cannot Install To Partition
I'm getting a message saying that Windows cannot install to a partition.  I've tried deleting all partitions on the drive and then formatting from setup.  I've also tried using mkntfs to format a partition and fdisk to set as bootable, then launching setup.  Neither have worked. I had a previous installation, but the hdd died and I got a 1TB replacement (previously it was 500GB).

I tried to install both to the 1TB and to another 640GB drive (even removing the 1TB from the system) but it seems to happen no matter which partition or drive I try this on. Has anybody seen this before?  Or have any ideas how to fix this?

Partition Install
I bought Premium the other day stupidly forgetting about my Wireless Adapter (Netgear WG11v2) got home and found out there isn't any drivers for it not surprisingly really.

I made a 30GB Partition for 64 Bit install a few minutes ago. I want to dual boot just to see if there's any chance of the adapter working on 7. If it works will I be able to upgrade Vista and then delete the boot sector and that partition? Or won't it work because I'd have already used the product key?

Win 7 States Not Genuine Win 7 Boot After Moving Partition
I reduced the size of my XP partition and moved the Win7 Prof 32 partition so no space is lost. Win7 boots and I can log in but now it states that this is not genuine copy of Win7 and I have an empty desktop. I do have a valid license and genuine copy of Win7 purchased through Microsoft. I think this problem exists because of the protection scheme that is used by MS and now I lost my system.

I do understand that the want to protect themselves but why is it that restrictive? What happens if I need to upgrade my disk or resize the partition? I tried repair and there is no restore point nothing (reported by repair) and I am sure that restore points do exist but no avail.

My anti-virus is disabled, and the partition was formated in the default format  not quick format if that makes a difference. Am I doing something wrong, or am I just too impatient? The screen is frozen, and so is the mouse.

Win7 Will Not Install On Partition 0
I have an older computer that is or was being used for Win XP Pro. I put a new hard drive that is partitioned with 25gb on the C drive with two other partitions of different sizes. I set the the hard drive as cable select (later tried as Master only)

Windows 7 in cable select saw all the partitions. When set to Master it only saw Partition 1 and the rest as unallocated which seems weird.

I have the boot order in Bios set as Floppy, CD Rom and then Hard Drive.

I have an external usb DVD reader for the install disc.

When i start the pc, then press to boot from CD, it sees the install disk and the install process starts. I get to the point to select where to install and I get this Notice:

"Windows can NOT be installed on to Disk 0 Partition 1"

I hit the more info button and get this notice:

"The computer hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the BIOS Menu."

It should boot to the hard drive the way I have it setup. At least it does for Win XP.

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestion as to how to get around this issue.

Clean Install With Partition
I'm currently running the 7100 build and I'm wanting to install 7127 using a new partition.

Basically my idea was to create a new partition and install 7127 on that and then uninstall 7100 but keeping my files so I can move then across to the new partition. Thus having a clean install but without losing any files.

Is this possible? Will I be able to uninstall the 7100 without deleting my files?

Also can I change the size of the new partition after I have made it - in order to resemble the set up I have now (ie: 2x 250GB).

Install On 32gb Partition
I am in the process of downloading windows 7 beta. I have about 235 gb hd with Vista taking about 115, Ubuntu Lniux about 85gb and about 35 of unallocated space. Will the Windows 7 beta install give me the option of installing on this unallocated space? Will that be enough space? If so, is this considered a clean install, where I can just delete the partition while in Vista and then just extend the vista partition when I am done with Win 7 beta? If not I already have hp recovery discs.

Disappeared Partition After Install
I'm using a 500GB hard drive that is split in to 2 partitions. The primary partition is 50GB, primarily for the OS. The second is the rest of the usable space on the drive, and has all the photos, documents, etc stored on the computer. Today I decided to finally install the Windows 7 RC that I've had sitting around. I moved over any important information on the C drive, the primary partition, over to the D drive, the larger partition, popped the disk in, and in setup, formatted the C drive. I finished the install without incident, but upon getting in to Windows 7, found my second, larger partition, had vanished.

I've seen similar problems described by other users by way of googling, and have attempted to do what they've done, using tools like Acronis Disk Director, Active Partition Recovery, Recuva, etc, and while they all seem to be able to identify that the drive is there, and even allow me to browse its contents, they are convinced there is no 'missing' partition to recover, and will not allow me to manually copy/paste files of interest from the problem partition to the C drive.

Is there any program that would allow me to copy paste like this, to make the drive accessible to Windows again, or proved any solution at all?

Cannot Install New Os Due To Partition Error
i tried to change the partition of my laptop but while in the process, i got an error. when i tried to reboot it, it already says disk error. so i tried to reinstall windows but after the "press any key to boot from cd" msg, i only get a blank screen. now i cant reformat my hard disk and cant reinstall any os on it. i even tried hiren's boot cd but i always get a blank screen after booting from it.

i cant also start the laptop on safe mode or even the last known good configuration. when i tried the safe mode, it says about the partition error (long lines of error like "partition (0)disk...system..." something. i am most certain that the cause was the erroneous or interrupted partitioning.

How To Install Upgrade To Format First Partition ?
I just tested this with Windows 7 Upgrade disk:

MS makes it clear that using Windows 7 Upgrade disk with XP requires a clean (Custom) install, which most people assume means over the same XP. This can be done, and places your files in windows.old for redistribution. This is only an option for Vista, since you can do an in-place upgrade which reinstalls your programs, files and settings.

You can also direct the clean install to another formatted partition or second primary formatted HDD which allows for a cleaner install. The problem is that you may still have XP in the first partition on the same HDD, which you probably will not want for long, and a laptop is hard to connect to a second HDD. Plus, an OS in an outer HDD partition takes a fraction longer to be read by the laser.

But there is a way to install from XP with an Upgrade disk to to a clean formatted first partition. Here is the way I did it:

Use a Partition manager like Paragon or Easeus to copy your XP partition over to a partition other than the first (or install XP to another partition) then use EasyBCD to Add it to the Boot Menu if necessary.

Now comes the hat trick: Boot into the new XP partition and use Disk Management to mark it active, then go to Control Panel>Folder options and show hidden system files. Make sure boot.ini, ntldr, and ntdetect.com are in the roots of both OS drives so you can boot back into XP later.

Now delete and format the first partition using Disk Management (or Easeus) from the XP desktop, then without rebooting install WIndows 7 to the first partition. After install, you can copy files over from XP via explorer and then hide or delete the XP partition, because you now have the best operating system ever and it's installed on formatted metal from an Upgrade disk.

Be sure to use Windows 7's great new imaging backup to image your installation after you get it like you want it, so you'll never have to reinstall again.

XP X86, Install Win7 On New Partition
