Merge Or Delete Partition With Win 7 Install

Sep 25, 2009

I will be upgrading my Vista-64 bit OS to Windows 7 when I get my pre-ordered copy in late October. The laptop currently has an used partition to the left of the Vista OS partition (as seen by Disk Management). When I install Windows 7 will I be able to delete and/or merge those two partitions?

Jul 15, 2012

I've got Win-7 installed on my laptop. Since the space on C drive is very less, is decided tht i'll extend it. I had another partition (D) that had loads of free space. But when I opened the Disk Management tool to delete this partition, the option thr was not active.thr's some file in D drive that cant be deleted. I was trying to format the D drive, but that's not possible either. It keeps on poppiin some kinda error ""Windows can format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or othe rprogrammes using this drive and try again". I also tried to locate the programs runnin any files from here. But there are few processes that i cant kill.

Partition Merge Crashed Hard Drive

Jul 31, 2011

I used MiniTool Partition Wizard Professional edition to merge two partitions and now my daughter's computer won't start.I installed a new 750 gb hard drive to replace her 320 gb drive. Everything was fine, but when I cloned her 320 gb hard to the 750 gb drive, it partitioned the drive so that 320 was allocated to the active boot system and the other 400-some were unallocated. I needed to merge both partitions so that all the space would be usable. This is how the drive was partitioned.B: System 199 MB --> C: Bootable Active 285 GB --> D: System Recovery 12 GB --> Unallocated 400 GB..MiniTool Partition Wizard will only allow you to merge two partitions that are next to each other, so in order to merge partition C with the unallocated partition I had to delete partition D.Everything was fine, but then MiniTool said it couldn't finish the merge process because partition C was in use. It told me to restart my computer to finish the merge process.I restarted the computer and now it won't boot. I download a Windows 7 64 bit recovery ISO and burned it to disk then popped it in the drive and restarted the computer but it still won't boot. I even went into BIOS settings and made sure that the CD/DVD drive is first in line in the boot order. It still won't boot. Not sure what to do from here. I'm a Mac user, my daughter has the Windows 7 computer, so I'm not exactly very well-versed in that operating system. Upgrading the hard drive on my Mac was very easy, no merging of partitions needed. How do I get my daughter's computer running and get the partitions merged?

Delete The Partition Or Format During Clean Install?

Jul 26, 2010

Once you get to the Custom (Advanced) tab of Windows 7 clean install there are options to delete the partition, format, etc. Assuming I want to delete all of my partitions so that I have one large volume C: is it best to delete the partitions first and then format? Why would someone do one over the other (or both?) Right now I have a C: partition and a D:RECOVERY partition. I want to delete the D: partition and combine it to the C: partition.Don't they do the same thing? Why do you need to format after you delete a partition ? Do I also delete the C: partition and "re-create" it? What about the term "Unallocated Space"

Copying 600K Files From External Drive To USB 3.0 Partition - Merge Folders?

Nov 24, 2012

I just spent like 18 hours copying 600K files, 1.33 TB, from a USB 2.0 ext. drive to a 1.36 TB USB 3.0 partition, but at the very end I got a handful of prompts to replace folders that already existed in the newly created folder, asked me to merge the original folder with the one just copied on the destination drive, eventually asking for permission to replace thousands of items and that's what it's doing now. I don't know what's going on. It appears that all files are there in both folders on each drive (with the exception of half a dozen that wouldn't copy due to long filenames).

Nearest I can guess is it is writing DOS names in addition to Windows names so the computer is going to spend more than a dozen more hours doing that. Windows Explorer copy wrongly offers to merge folders Windows Explorer copy wrongly offers to merge folders. The folder being copied that is being merged is called Drive(D), probably from a backup of Win 98SE being restored onto a Win XP machine, so it may resemble a system folder to Windows 7.

Way To Delete A Partition

Jan 22, 2012

I have a 6 month old HP Pavilion dv6.When I was partitioning the hard drive, some error occurred and the process got interrupted( this was after the 'shrink the primary partition'0 step). Disk Management Window didn't show any new partition, so I went on and created two new partitions, but afterwards, I can see an extra partition in My Computer. No info like disk capcity etc., visible; It just has the name 'Local Disk (Q)'. I tried running Disk Management again to get rid of it, but it's not shown in the Disk Management listing. How do I delete it? I tried system restore, but no system restore points prior to the partitioning available

Delete Partition

Oct 26, 2009

I was running Windows Vista on my C drive and had purchased Windows 7. Prior to installing Win 7, I partitioned my C drive (since it was one giant drive) and made a new one and labeled it H. I then went on to install Windows 7 on the H drive, which went smoothly. Now I'd like to delete the partition that contains Vista.

However, I am not able to delete it and I get an error. I have attached the screen shot of my disk management. If someone could explain how I could go about in order to delete the C partition, that would be wonderful. I again apologize for starting this thread if someone else has posted the same thing elsewhere.

Can I Delete The Partition ?

Dec 8, 2009

I had windows vista home premium 64bit in a dual boot with windows 7 ultimate beta build. Then I got my upgrade cd and upgraded vista to Windows 7 home premium 64bit. So now I have a dual boot with Windows 7 (new version with all my files on it) and Windows 7 (old beta with almost nothing on it except for Windows 7 beta). In the disk manager, it says "system, BOOT, page file, active, primary partition" for the new Windows 7, and just "primary partition" for the old beta partition.

I'm pretty sure this means I can delete the old partition and re-allocate the space to my main partition, but I'm posting this just to be sure because I learned a hard lesson when I deleted an ubuntu partition that was in charge of the boot.

Cannot Delete Partition On Windows 7?

May 3, 2011

I have a disk with 3 partitions:

1 - Windows 7

2 - DATA

3 - Linux Ubuntu

Recently I decided to delete Ubuntu once and for all. To do this, I followed this tutorial: Partition or Volume Delete,However I cannot pass step5. Once I click "yes" I get the most retarded and frustrating error message I've ever seen in all my life (and I've seen lots of them),-"An unexpected error has occurred. Check the System Event Log for more information on the error. Close Disk Management console, then restart Disk Management or restart the computer."I closed an opened the program - it didn't work.I restarted the computer - it didn't work.I checked the Event Log - Lot's of random information and garbage over all.In order to fix the problem I spent the rest of the night searching for a solution, but my best friend Google has failed me, apparently no one has ever had this error before.... people usually get error codes or something similar to identify the errors ... but not me ... I guess I must be special .I've also decided to use diskpart and my good old friend - the command line. This is what I gotD

Can't Delete Files On Partition

Sep 21, 2009

I had a dualboot of Windows 7 and Windows XP. Later I just only wanted to have Windows 7. So I downloaded Vista Boot Manager and deleted Windows XP on the list, so now its only booting from Windows 7. But all those files of Windows XP are still left on the partition. And I have no access to delete them, not even in a save boot. Unlocker helped me a while, but I'm now stuck with 3 folders which I can't delete. I've got now 50 GB left on my HDD, and the partition of Windows XP was 200 GB, so I think you can realize I want those GB back!

Cannot Delete Old System Partition?

I have WinXP installed on C: and Windows 7 installed on D:. As you can see in the attached image, C: is marked as a system partition but in fact I'd like to delete it and leave only D: with Windows 7 on it. However I can't delete it because it says it's a system partition soooo... how do I do this? Is setting the C: as inactive in command prompt (and D: as active) enough? Or can I just merge these 2 partition into one? I tried EaseUS but it says that boot or system partitions cannot be modified/merged.

How To Delete / Extended Partition ?

Oct 25, 2009

I have 4 partitions on my notebook.

C: is Windows 7 32-bit

D: is Vista 32-bit

E: is Windows 7 64-bit

F: is Data.

I now want to get rid of the Vista partition and give its sectors to the Windows 7 64-bit.

I tried shrinking the Vista partiton, but the extend option is greyed out for Windows 7 64-bit.

How do I remove Vista and have it deleted from the boot manager setup?

Then how do I extend the Windows 7 64-bit into the, now empty, Vista partition?

Wont Let Me Delete My Old Partition

Nov 7, 2009

I'm not sure if this thread belongs here or not, but I'm having an issue that is driving me nuts.

I have 2 hard drives, a 200 gig 7200rpm and a 35 gig 10000rpm. The 200 gig is split into two partitions. 150 gig and 50 gig. Originally, I had the Vista Upgrade installed over XP on the 50 gig and all my media and junk on the 150 gig partition. A few choice programs were installed on the 10K.

I decided I wanted the Windows 7 Upgrade to be installed on the 10K from now on so that things move a bit faster, boot times and whatnot. So I did and now I have the 150 gig partition free and wiped, but the 50 gig partition with my old Vista won't wipe, format or delete whatsoever, and it won't let me boot from any of the discs so I can just delete and wipe everything and start over.

It feels like a jumbled mess and I just want to get it all right. How on earth can I delete, format or completely wipe my 50 gig partition so I can delete that partition and make it whole with the other 150 gigs and just have all of Windows installed on my 10K?

I tried changing my boot order in the bios and it just tells me to insert the system disc. It won't recognize it and let me delete the partitions manually.

Unable To Format/Delete Old Partition?

Feb 10, 2011

I recently upgrade my entire computer, with it i brought a 2TB WD HDD. I set everything up, installed Windows 7 and updated all my drivers/etc.

I then moved my old 3x 1TB drives over, in it, one partition had my old Windows 7, I am unable to format/delete windows folder/program files. One HDD had my old Vista partition, same story..i can't format/delete.

What i basically want to do is, take those 3 drives, format and re-set them into 1TB 1 Parition drives. Now i have 1.6TB space left on my 2TB drive, so i can put one entire drive over and format the old, repartition to 1...

How can i get about this? I don't understand why the boot system will have problems because when i installed Windows 7 it had no other drives to see..
