Windows 7 Update Slows Down Computer?
Feb 3, 2011
Before the Update, my computer was super fast. Every application I opened showed up almost instantly. After the update, the same applications that used to show up instantly take a lot longer to show...1) How do I disable Automatic Updates for Hardware/Drivers?2) I think I uninstalled the updates I downloaded yesterday... But my computer still isn't at its normal speed.

Whenever I open anything from microsoft office 2003, that can be outlook, that can be a word document, that can be a powerpoint presentation or an excel sheet, my windows 7 taskbar and the computer in general slow down considerably, but expecially the taskbar lags for at least 3 seconds whatever I do (like moving the pointer over several icons so that the aero-thingy shows up takes 5 seconds to pop up the little windows or opening a new explorer window). So when did it all start? At first everything was fine, office 2003 was running fine with w7x64, then I installed the cisco system vpn client (64bit of course) because i need it for university. After that the problem occured and I haven't been able to make it go away since then.
1. I uninstalled the vpn client -> no changes
2. I uninstalled office 2003 and reinstalled -> no changes
3. Office is updated with the latest patch -> no changes
4. I tried to turn of aero (who knows?) -> no changes
System in general:
CPU: Core i7 920
Memory: 6 gig ram 1333 tripple channel
HDD: 640gb western digital aals
PSU: Enermax modu 82+ 625w
Graphic: Geforce gtx 260

Basically what happens is there's a sudden slowdown in computer performance. For example if I'm listening to a live stream, watching a video, or playing a game it will suddenly all go into slow motion for a few seconds and then return to normal speed. I know it's more of a global problem because I can see it happening with other programs, too. When a web page is loading the load speed may suddenly go very slowly for a few seconds, or even if I'm typing in Microsoft Word I'll keep hitting keys, and the keystrokes will be logged, but no words will appear for a few seconds and then it will suddenly have to catch up.
What I've tried to do: A friend suggested my CPU was overloaded, but I checked my CPU usage and it's always quite low, as in below 50% as far as I've ever seen. Someone else suggested defragmenting my hard drive, which I did using TuneUp Utilities, but if anything that made the problem worse, because now in addition to slowing down sometimes things will just stop for a few seconds, or web pages will time out but when I reload them they work fine. My machine: I'm using a Lenovo Ideapad, intel Core i7, 4 GB RAM.

I bought the laptop used about a month ago and everything seemed fine. A few days later I noticed that the fan was running a lot, so I read a tutorial online and used a can of compressed air to clean out/off any dust and such. Right away the fan/computer was much quieter. My situation now is that whenever I watch a video (Netflix, HULU or even something stored on my HD), within a minute or two the video freezes/locks up or sound and video are lagging quite a bit. I have no indications of malware/virus and it seems everything else is mostly fine with the computer. I did the Windows troubleshooting and it recommended lowering resolution and turning off Windows Transparency. I haven't done either because I wanted to ask for help before I start changing settings. I installed Core Temp. 1.0 about an hour ago and both Core's are running between 72-76 deg C with a Tj.Max of 85*C.

This problem just started one day with no warning. I found that the computer starts up perfectly fine, loads Windows 7, and logs me in. but, after that, everything is suddenly incredibly slow, with the start menu taking minutes to open and certain programs even taking tens of minutes to open. It will occasionally freeze and become non-responsive. So I booted into safe mode, where at first it seemed to be doing relatively fine, but after opening a couple programs/files, it slowed down dramatically again.
I've run quick scans from Avast, MBAM, and SAS with no result. At first I thought it was hard drive failure, but that doesn't explain why at first the computer loads up fine. I then thought maybe it's memory failing, so I used the memory diagnostic tool, using 2 passes. It went through the first pass without problem, but I never saw it complete the second pass because when I came back, the computer had restarted with an error message and leaving a minidump file.
The computer is a Toshiba Satellite P755-S5269. I've had it for over a year without problem.

When I do a large file transfer or multiple file transfers my computer gets extremely slow during the process. Slow meaning that to open the web browser it struggles and while typing search terms in google there is lag. That's just one example, other's being opening programs.Last night I reformatted my computer because I thought maybe it had something to do with it. But no luck because after the clean install was complete I transferred about 600gb back on the computer and during this process tried to view the properties xpadder (Right click-> Properties) and the entire system froze. A hard reset and I started the process all over again, tried watching tv using windows media center and it worked but flipping through channels was extremely slow and it is not usually.

I think my hardware is more than capable:
Windows 7 x64
8gb of Ram
1tb WD Caviar Black
ATI Radeon 4890
Gigabye P55-UD6 rev1.0
Enermax Modu 82+
Corsair H50
Some background info:
I originally had my computer overclocked but after a Bios upgrade I couldn't get the same results so It is currently stock speed. Computer is only a year old. Running temps are around 40-45C. Harddrive temps are normal (40-48C). I have completed a full check disk and monitor the harddrive with CrystalDisk Info (SMART Utility) and it seems 100%.

i have been having a persistent issue that i can't seem to fix. it started when i would watch a video on Internet; any video! i would start to watch a video and within a few minutes, it would start to stick and playback would slow down on the video and anything else i would be doing on my computer, and then even the audio would be filled with static (as if it were a radio station). i was always able to "x" out of Internet, but then i realized any video i watch anyway on the internet would do the same thing, (if it played long enough). sometimes i was able to play a whole video without this issue, but now, it is becoming persistent. sometimes this problem would start a minute after the video commences, other times, it would start 10 minutes later, or 30 minutes later. at this point i have not been able to watch any video file from any site on the www. have run scan after scan, and system says nothing is wrong. last night, i resorted just to listening to audio files (on wmp) and now it is acting up too! (sounds like i have 'bad reception on my music files all of a sudden). i ran the microsoft fixit program last night, and it suggests i should delete some codecs

My computer, about 5-20 minutes after start up, slows down so much that I can hardly do anything for 5 minutes. I either A) wait it out till my computer goes back to running normally (takes 1-5 minutes) or hold my off button and restart (or actually shut down the normal way but it takes forever) but upon restarting the same thing happens again.I have no idea whats causing this. When its happening I check my CPU usage and its nothing unusual (0-30%). I have scanned with Malwarebytes (nothing), Microsoft Security Essentials (nothing), and Superantispyware (deleted a few adware cookies). Besides this slow down period, I see no other symptoms of malware. The only weird thing is for some reason I always get PC Issue in the bottom right hand corner that says Windows Defender/MSE is off, and asks me to turn one of them on, but I already have MSE running. I click the issue and tell it to turn on and update MSE, after which it stops bugging me but it comes back at least sometimes after I restart. The computer: a 2-3 year old dell laptop, been dropped a couple times but I've never had that cause problems before, windows 7.

This has been baffling me for at least a month now, my PC will randomly start to slow down after a few hours (2-4) of being used. This began to happen randomly and after no new software or updates where installed. So far I have tried to take off all my overclocks, run a CPU test for 24hours (stable) and all the defrags and disk cleanups that I could be bothered to run. Worst thing is this started happening a day before I was going to make a restore point. All my system info is on my profile.
EDIT: I forgot to mention where the slowdowns occur, they include programs taking a good 5 seconds to open and more confusingly sites take a good 30-40 seconds to load when shortly after boot it takes less than a second.I have checked my network usage and system resource usage and both are within their normal ranges.

Past couple of months my computer has been slowing down/lagging. It seems to happen when I am streaming, sometimes it happens when I run a game. What it does is the screen completely freezes and the sound is like slowing down to make the voices/music incomprehensible. Sometimes it will recover and run normally again. Other times it will slow then completely stop working, in which time I have to hard shutdown the computer. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling both of my browsers, chrome and firefox. (And when I say uninstall I mean I did a complete wipe of all registry items and anything related to the programs). That seemed to work for about a month and then today my computer lagged then stopped working.
Heres are the specs:
OS Name --Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
Version ---6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601
OS Manufacturer ---Microsoft Corporation
System Manufacturer ---Sony Corporation
System Model --VPCEB14FX
System Type -- x64-based PC

Basically, my problem is that randomly next to EVERYTHING will stop responding for about five minutes, except the lower profile applications such as teamspeak and mIRC, and its been happening since july. Then, it will work again for a bit and then it will happen again. I got windows 7 home premium 64 bit.
When it first started, it would freeze so bad that it would BSOD, but that has not happened recently, however sometimes even TS and mIRC won't respond, and you can't open any new programs up while its in this cycle plus 99% of the time explorer.exe stops responding as well. We think the problem started happening when we did the windows updates, we didn't do all of them but we did the majority of them at that time, but it may of just been a coincidence. It will happen basically no matter what i got open, if its just Fire Fox or if i got FireFox, WoW, Diablo 2, TS, mIRC all open.
I just recently upgraded to service pack 1, and the problem still occurs. I've ran CCleaner, malwarebyes, anti virus, and all came up with little to no malicious activity

My HP desktop suddely slowed down for no reason -- to a "snail's pace" -- and I opened windows task manager and saw that the memory was 99% full. Restarting solves it for a few minutes, then it happens again. I've run Anti-virus (Avira says I have "multiple hidden files") -- and I need another program to fix that. It's been running Ok for a few hours, but I'm sure it will happen again.

I am having a problem lately with my computer. When I want to install a software that is big in size it slows down my computer and the installer won't start. I can install software like VLC, Google Chrome etc. that are little in size, but I can't install for example Microsoft Office. I managed to install a game, but the installer started in 3 minutes and meanwhile the computer was very slow. After the installer started the computer returned to normal speed. It can't be a virus I just recently reinstalled Windows.

My PC has the following:
[code]...
Originally I planned to set the two 3TB drives up for RAID1 but when I ran into some problems I decided to instead set one of the 3TB drives as the location for Windows backup (drive "A" for use, drive "B" for backup). However, when I set drive B up for Windows backup whenever Windows 7 boots it takes about 60 seconds longer (it hangs on the "Starting Windows" screen). Both drives are recognized and I'm able to freely transfer data between them, and the problem disappears when I run the clean diskpart command on drive B.Does Windows 7 backup have problems with 3TB drives? I'm still having problems setting up RAID1 either through my motherboard or Windows 7 for these drives (Windows 7 doesn't give me the option to mirror) so at the moment I'm not sure what to do.

I am writing this windows safe mode.Cannot get computer to boot in reg mode. Sat for 40 minutes, with message "please wait while windows configures"Am running windows 7, 64 bit home, Dell Inspiron 570 It started yesterday when it downloaded updates for Windows. After the restart, the computer screen looked strange and could not open any programs. Went to "start" and re-booted, same thing happened again. I again went to start, this time it came up with 2 errors. (wish I had wrote them down) but said something about windows cannot find such and such. (sorry) Anyway, clicked on the "X" and windows came up again, but nothing would open. Had to hard boot as the start button would not even work.Rebooted into safe mode and have tried to return to a previous restore point. Seems I don't have any. So can't do that. I did go go to the recent installed windows updates and deleted them. But will not let me change the settings as in: Don't install updates automatically. I don't know if it is trying to install those over and over again. I tried to get it to come up again with the errors, but no such luck, it just sits with the blue welcome screen, then the "please wait"

I recently had a few bad viruses on my computer (some trojan and google redirect virus). I think I got rid of them, but I deleted a lot of stuff maybe I should not have in the process. Windows update no longer works. For a while, I was not even able to scan for updates, then I ran the fix it from the microsoft website and that let me scan, but when I try to install, I get this error message: Code 80246008 Windows Update encountered an unknown error. When I click on the link to get help with this error, it can't find any information on it.Anyways, when I go into control panel > administrative tools > services, Windows Update is not even in the list. How do I get it back? Do I have to reinstall windows?
Edit: I should also note I just tried to install the latest virus definitions for microsoft security essentials and I got error code 0x80240022. Says there may be a missing system file, an incorrect system setting, or a problem with a registry file.

I'm having a problem with my laptop. I run Windows 7 Professional 64bit on it. An hour and a half ago I shut down my computer and Windows installed an update, but I stuck around because I wanted my computer off and I know that the computer restarts itself after installing an update. The computer restarted itself and configured the update, but when I chose to shut down the computer it actually restarted itself. I've tried shutting it down several times, but every time it starts right back up. I've run a virus scan, the Power troubleshooter, disabled automatic restart upon System failure
