Windows 7 Randomly Freezes - Swapped Out Hard Drive For SSD
Mar 13, 2012
I am running Windows 7 on a Dell XPS L502X. The only modification I have made to it is swapping out the spindle hard drive for a SSD (Crucial Technology 128 GBl RealSSD C300 Series). I have had this computer almost a year and it works very well except for the fact once every few days it will completely freeze. I will be able to move my mouse, but nothing is clickable and all the programs I had open will just stay up, not doing anything. The only way I am able to get out of it is by hitting ctrl+alt+delete and waiting for the option screen to come up (Lock computer, change password, Task Manager, etc.). Once that happens, I just click cancel, and then everything is working perfectly again, without any programs crashing.
Also, here is a hardware/software snapshot of my computer: [URL].

I am little bit worried about my harddrive. Previously I had 80 gb harddrive and then I upgraded it to 320 gb. I have dell latitude d630 laptop with two operating system. Windows 7 and XP. When I use Windows 7 then my computer specially hard drive light stays on and mouse is busy and I have to restart my laptop however in my XP this problem is never seen. I also installed vista and deep formatted the hard drive but the problem still persists in windows 7. The system is normal but when I surf internet via mozilla or chrome. This problem arises. I have done everytrouble shooting I can chkdsk and everything but when I use chkdsk in my western digital harddrive, it says error. I am thinking its harddrive issue what do u say?

A random times, often not long after startup/wakeup my hard drive appears to freeze. The hard drive light lights up solid, any programs accessing the drive freeze and resource monitor says the disk is "100% active" yet also says "0kb disk I/O" is occuring. After a couple of minutes it fixes itself and anything ive attempted to do during the time it was frozen all happens really quickly. The nature of the problem makes me believe its the hard drive at fault, but its smart readings are fine and ive ran the dell diagnostic tool that came with the laptop without finding any problems. Ive also done the ususal routine of updating drivers and the BIOS etc.
Specs:
Dell XPS L502x
Intel core i7 2ghz (2630 i think)
8gb ram
Nvidia GT 540m
Toshiba MK6461GSGY 640gb HDD

Ok, so I am going to try to explain this as thorougly as possible while trying not to sound like an idiot in the process. I am by no means computer savvy so anyone that has any advice will more than likely need to talk to me like a 5th grader. I am ok with that. Since installing a Windows Update about a month ago, my screen will randomly lock up. At times it will clear itself after a couple of seconds and state something to the effect that "display driver amd has stopped working and recovered." Other times it will stay frozen for about 10 minutes and then will start functioning properly again. More often than not though, it will stay frozen indefinitely and require a hard reboot. This happens during mundane activities. No extreme gaming going on. Generally it is while just browsing the net. It tends to happen more often to my wife who uses it during the day to work through a VPN. I don't believe there is any correlation though. I have read multiple forums on the web and have tried several things, from cleaning the registry to uninstalling the driver software and reinstalling it in safe mode. The latter seemed to work last night but today my wife started having the same issue again.

I have two optical drives on it one internal and one USB external. For some reason the external drive sometimes disappears from the computer. I can't find it anywhere then a few days later it pops back up. I have tried replacing the cables and checked to power and still the problem continues. I also tried reinstalled the system and sometimes it works.

I have a 2nd hard drive and somewhat frequently it disappears from Windows explorer like it doesn't even exist. Then once I reboot the disk is back and perfectly fine and intact.I ran the Seagate tools against it and both the short test and long test passed just fine and it says that SMART has NOT been tripped.I did a lot of googling and found similar reports from others. But the things they suggest do not apply. For instance some reports are related to the driver disappearing after waking from sleep. In my case I can be actively using the drive and then it disappears. Also someone suggested disabling power management on the drive, but when I checked the drive is already set to Never power down.I am thinking that perhaps the SATA cable is buggy or not connected solidly. I'm going to open it up and try changing the cable. I really do think the drive is perfectly fine.

Neither of my hard drives work in normal windows with the gpu in. On a fresh reformat they work for a short while before starting to click and freeze up. On an older installation this freeze is instant, as soon as the desktop loads. It works as it should in safe mode leading me to believe that it may be a software problem but I haves no idea. The hard drives work as intended in normal windows without the GPU.I don't think it's my PSU as it's 750 watts. If it's software I have no idea where to begin. It may be worth mentioning my mobo (MSI z68 gd55 g3) was sent away to get a BIOS update for compatability with ivy bridge, but I have installed the drivers for the update.

So, i woke up the other day to see my Windows 7 computer is now completely screwed up that i am on right now..C drive is Mirror RAIDed to let you know.It is reporting 74.1MB free of 465GB total on the drive. No matter what i delete, it does NOT EVER free up space. As a matter of fact, some files delete, then come right back, files i've added myself.. weird #1Two, i run chkdsk in windows, it says C drive is a RAW drive and cant scan however it boots up fine to it every time. weird #2So i then use windows repair command prompt to chkdsk /F /R It sees it's NTFS JUST FINE..but reports ZERO errors.. weird #3I scan using Intel Matrix Storage Console in windows, NO ERRORS, weird #4But i am getting Disk I/O errors like crazy in windows logs and in programs, etc.. weird #5I selected all files on Disk C- total space in use under 300gb, but showing 465GB in use.. weird #6Scanned for infections with AVG, no errors, i tried malwarebytes, will not open- 0xc000005. weird #7So i have a drive that can't be read but is read but reporting wrong size but measures right size that has no errors but has errors.

I just turned on an almost new build pc to install windows 7. The entire pc is a new build except the hard drive that has a good copy of xp installed. I am trying to install a new copy of windows 7 on the hard drive. So I turned the pc on and go into the bios to set the DVD to boot first. So windows starts to install and the window is loading bar comes up. After the bar gets over half full, the screen drops and there is a line of h's on the left side of the screen and the installation freezes.

The Problem: My windows 7 PC freezes (and stays frozen) at apparently random times. The computer will not respond to the mouse or keyboard. Keyboard lights are on, but the Caps Lock key will not light up. This has happened both on startup and while using the PC. If a sound is playing when it freezes, the note will keep repeating. If I have the Task ManagersPerformance tab up, I can see that the CPU activity graph is frozen as well. The only option I have is to hit the reset button. There are no errors presented. The Event Log does not show any specific error occurring at the time of the freeze. The Event log only shows errors and warnings about my having shut down the PC unexpectedly. Nothing to show it was frozen and non-responsive. I have made sure all drivers are up to date. Ran SFC - it reports all files are in order. My web searches have found similar issues occurring with other people, on this and on other forums. I tried various solutions proposed (changed antivirus program, set power to high performance ran a windows repair install, tested memory and video card) but none of this has helped so far.

I've got Windows 7 Home Premium installed on Dell Studio 17 laptop. It freezes randomly. Doesn't matter what program I use. It usually needs a minute or so before it starts running again in the meantime it's not doing anything. just sits there. Extremely frustrating.I reinstalled Windows - same thing. Drivers are up to date.I ran diagnostics - everything's fine. I ran it in the safe mode again - same thing, it froze. Frustration again. The only thing Dell rep managed to say: "it's a virus" after I formatted the drive and reinstalled OS?

I believe I have quite the problem here. Let me start by saying I'm no new comer to technology as I'm in tech support and network services and I'm about the throw this computer out the window. At random intervals while using any number of programs (Dislikes Chrome specifically) Windows will lock-up. If listening to any sounds/music the output will become quite distorted before freezing and it even allows movement of the mouse and keyboard before completely locking up. However, windows appears to still be doing some things (Loops and continuous pop-ups) after the lock-up has begun.
Steps I have taken:
Memcheck86 day long pass turns up nothing.
Atto doesn't result in anything HDD wise.
One stick of RAM works for longer than two (Sometimes indefinitely.)
[code].....

At various, seemingly random points throughout using the computer, Windows 7 simply freezes or locks up. No BSOD or error code is given, it simply becomes completely unresponsive. The only means I have of shutting down/restarting is to hold the power button and force it to turn off.Using 32 bit Windows 7 Professional Downloaded and clean installed over XP Home a couple weeks ago Computer is an eMachines T3104 with a AMD Sempron 3100+ processor - circa 2005 In an effort to combat old hardware with the new Windows 7 and freezing, I upgraded to 2GB RAM, 430 watt PSU and an AGP 8x video card (Jaton 3DFORCE FX 5200TV) I tried to update the BIOS (currently Phoenix-Award 6.00PG) today. That program hangs up while Windows 7 continued to work. I'd love for it to be fully operational. It is not used for any gaming - online or otherwise. I use it for internet and school work (Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, etc)

So I recently purchased a new HP pavilion laptop. It has a Core i7 Gen 3 processor, with NVIDIA GEFORCE 630M and a Broadcom wireless chipset. It came with Windows 7 and I upgraded it soon after purchase to Windows 8 using a promo offer. Well, now I am back to Windows 7 due to some crashes but I noticed this problem in both operating systems.
The system would hang completely, save for mouse movements (No clicks though) and I would not be able to do anything. The strangest thing is that within a minute or so, it would recover. I thought, initially, that the problem was with flash (And I use Google Chrome) so I changed the plugins option to on-demand and the problem still persists. I do have all the latest drivers for all the devices. I am wondering now if the problem is with either the Wireless card (Either wifi or bluetooth). I had a similar sort of problem isolated with Microsoft Word (Meaning only that application froze and recovered). My friend told me the he had the same problem on his Dell Laptop and disabled this particular bluetooth transmit addon which remedied the problem. Now, I am disabling the Bluetooth network adapter and checking if the issue persists but I cannot do the same with the Wifi as that is quite necessary.

For the past few weeks, my computer has been experiencing a couple of different failures. Sometimes it freezes up (including the mouse), sometimes it BSODs (different error messages at different times), and sometimes it just shuts off and restarts, as if the power had been momentarily cut. Sometimes it goes a few days between failures, and sometimes it happens multiple times an hour.I've tried the following:update drivers restore from restore point from before the problem started memtest86 (ran 11 times with no errors) reinstall Windows Here are the specs from the TSG SysInfo:Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.2OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate, 32 bitProcessor:[CODE]

It started freezing up around the same time an update for my video card would not install. The video card is running about 47 degrees C. I did a clean install to change from Windows 7 32 bit Home Premium to 64 bit Home Premium and still freezes randomly. Sometimes it will go a long time before it freezes. I have a NVIDEA Ge Force 8400 GS and I did install the 64 it drivers. I ran Malewarebytes and no problems there. The windows update that will not install is a Graphic Adapter WDD M1, WDD M2.

I got a new machine recently and it all works fine, except the operating system seems to randomly freeze. When it does the only way I have found to get out of it is to manually plug it out and restartOn freeze the keyboard and mouse become entirely unresponsive, the cursor does not move, nor do either click buttons do anything, if I'm typing somewhere the text does not appear, and Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't bring up the usual screenI'm running windows 7 home premium on a 64 bit machine. I haven't found anything quite like this problem around so I thought it deserved a new topic by itselfI can't think of what to do to determine the cause or any potential solution. Everything's up to date. I think all the drivers are too. I put in different virus software 'cause I thought that might be itdit: The last time it happened I tried putting the keyboard and mouse into different USB ports, but that didn't work.Edit2: I just went to my device manager and manually checked for updates for all the drivers, and it turned out my graphics card needed an update (I updated it myself about three weeks ago so I discarded this as a potential problem). So I installed the update.

I've got a new copy of windows 7 (32 bit version) I have got 4 GB ram only 3,25 in use (like I had on the XP version, running on the same PC) and after I boot up the PC I just look at the desktop, play with some random games, create and delete folders, do some little stress to the RAM or sometimes just doing nothing. The only boot that works is safe mode and its variants.
Things that I've done in the past 7 days:
-I checked RAM integrity - no errors
-Everything is up to date (drivers, everything) - it hanged/froze even with a fresh copy of Windows 7
-I use wireless if that is a problem, found some errors about it and will post them after this list
-enabled services and disabled them VIA msconfig (toying around I found out that it WONT CRASH with any internet service on normal mode)
-I checked Windows 7 compatibility and it's 100% compatible
-Tried to update BIOS but I don't think it will solve anything anyways
-Used dozens of registry cleaners (CCleaner and lots; lots more) - still nothing
-Put a second HDD on my machine with Windows 7 same version, it still crashed, but on the second machine the second HDD works great.

Win7 has been randomly freezing for the past month, having installed about 2 months ago. The computer freezes up, no response from mouse, keyboard, or monitor -- However I am able to see the screen (no BSOD) as long as it doesn't go to sleep.
I've tried a couple potential solutions. Switched power management to Performance and turned off all sleep / power down options. Cleaned registry with registry cleaner. Ran chkdsk. Tried to update all drivers (seems all are up to date by win7 standards). I've looked through the Event Viewer but I am no expert and do not know how to troubleshoot System Events.

At moments, it does freeze, and it doesn't come back, so I have to shut down it by pressing the radio button. It just freezes randomly, 1 day it didn't freeze all day, and the another day it froze 4 different times of the day, but maybe because I was on the computer most of the day, yet though I have been most of the day when I ran Windows XP or Windows Vista, and it didn't freeze. And at times, the screensaver also freezes, and trust me it annoys you when you're downloading or watching something.
