Windows 7 No Longer Authenticates To Windows 2000 Server
Mar 14, 2012
I run a Windows 2000 web server. As of a day or so ago I started receiving calls from customers running Windows 7 that they cannot log into secure directories on their websites (on my Windows 2000 server). I assume this has to do with a recent update to Windows 7. how I can fix it on the server end or what I can tell my customers so they can fix it on the Windows 7 end? This happened once before about a year ago. The problem eventually fixed itself but I don't want to rely on that happening if it is something I can fix.

I have a windows 7 computer and a windows 2000 on a wired network. The windows 7 and 2000 previously played nicely although it was a bit of a pain to get it to work the first time, don't really remember what the issue was. I have a big old CAD plotter connected to a parallel port on the windows 2000 computer and previously was able to use it from the windows 7 computer. I was also able to access any file on the windows 2000 from windows 7, it all worked fine a few months ago. I havent had the win 2000 computer on for a while but recently needed to use the plotter. I now get a log-on error when trying to access the win 2000 from the win 7, but it shows up on networks. The log-on error window shows a domain with the name of the windows 7 computer listed as the domain name, but nothing is set to be on a domain. I can access the files on the windows 7 computer from the win 2000 computer with no issues in that direction. There is no home group set up (think that was the issue the first time) Windows 7 is always updating itself and I suspect thats part of the problem, I am guessing something went back to a default during an up-date but I can't find it.

I'm using Outlook 2007 and an IMAP server through Godaddy (which I am quickly disliking after many years). I run several accounts, two of which are IMAP (the others are POP). This morning, all of a sudden, the previously retrieved messages on ONE of the IMAP accounts no longer appear in Outlook, despite being on the server -- I can see all of them via webmail. There is only one folder - the Inbox. The other IMAP account still functions normally (which is also through Godaddy), and all my saved folders that reside locally all function normally too -- none of that mail is gone as best I can tell.
I can receive new mail without issue, and send mail as well, but cannot access the old mail via Outlook. I don't get any error messages, I haven't changed any settings, and I've run Microsoft's "Outlook 2007 Inbox Repair Tool" - SCANPST on all my PST files. The tool found errors in all the files, and it repaired them, but that has not changed a thing.

Have been a LONG LONG user of Linux as a server (hosting VM's XP / Windows 7 mix) and file / print sharing.
I used to avoid MS like the plague as far as SERVER environments are concerned - probably because my first experince was Windows NT (Windows NeanderThal or Windows No Thanks) which was SO HORRIBLE that it put me off Windows servers for ages.
(Note I'm using a server in a HOME environment where we have around 8 machines (most of which are actually mine for testing -- not a corporate environment which has other considerations).
The problem now with the latest Linux distros that they are trying to be "A Better Windows than Windows". You can of course customize them but I haven't got the time or patience to do this any more. To select what packages to install / leave out now is a 100% pain and if you do it wrong the chances are the system will give errors.
I've looked at the new SUSE 11.2 -- slick and polished - bit I don't NEED "an alternative Windows".
I've just been looking at Windows Server 2008 R2 (got it from Technet) and I'm REALLY IMPRESSED with it so far. I've installed the STANDARD version - you don't need datacenter or Enterprise version for a home server.
It runs vmware server on it just fine (although I might go the whole hog and use the Hyper-V virtualisation -- need to do a bit more research).
I'm quite happy letting MS do the updates than having to mess around with Kernel compiles etc.
Incidentally as a HOME server there are some considerations that you might want to do to make it more like a Desktop OS than a pure server for example add multi-media to it.
This guy does a great job at this .
Convert your Windows Server 2008 R2 to a Workstation! - Multiboot Installation
Windows 7 VM's run just fine on W2008 server (they should as there is a lot of common code).

I had all my files transfered from my old desktop to a new laptop. When I tried to load Microsoft 2000, I was asked for the 25 digit product key which I typed in the required box. I assumed that finished the process. Now when I click on a file, I get the following message" required registry information is missing and this application cannot run. Please rerun setup to correct this problem".

I've installed my version of MS Office(2000 Premium) on Windows 7, and everything seems to work fine, except outlook. I get two different errors:
1)An error occurred while attempting to open the Windows Address Book. Unable to find the WAB.DLL.
2)Unable to update public free/busy data. An error occurred while attempting to open the Windows Address Book. Unable to find the WAB.DLL
I've been searching the web, with no concrete results for 7. I've found references for everything from Win 95 up through Vista, but, not 7.As I understand it, these are included in Outlook express, which, of course isn't available in 7. Each reference it to 'reinstall OE'. 7 doesn't give you that option, as its not a native application to 7.One reference suggested copying WAB.DLL as well as WAB32.DLL to the sytem32 directory. Didn't work.

I have been using MS Office 2000 professional with Windows 7 (64 bit) and have no problems with it except the following that has cropped up a short time ago.MS Word in MS Office 2000 Professional has a function "Send to" and up to recently I could use the function to send a MS Word document via Windows Live Mail. Now however on my desktop a mail program called "Foxmail" is shown up but Windows Live Mail is missing while on my laptop no email program is shown. In both cases the "Send To" function shows as being able to send to a fax recipient or to MS Powerpoint.I use Windows Live Mail as my regular email program and would like to use it with MS word. Should it work and if so, how do I remove Foxmail and add Windows Live Mail to my Desktop and just add it to my Laptop?
