Windows 7 CPU Usage Always At 100%?
Jan 16, 2009
Recently installed the 64 bit Windows 7 beta, and my CPU usage is constantly at or near 100%, even with no external programs running. Just to give a quick run-down of my system, I have:-- AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Processor (2.2 GHz)-- 2GB DDR RAM-- 1GB Diamond Radeon 3650HD Video CardThe rest of my setup is a basic desktop machine -- plenty of storage space, etc. It runs XP Professional (32-bit) just fine. I installed the Vista x64 driver for my video card last night; it installed successfully, but did not seem to help much.

When I first boot up the machine and start using it (win 7 ultimate 64bit) the memory usage stays arround 40%. If I keep using it, the memory usage will slowly increase until it reaches 99%. If I boot up the machine and just leave it there for a couple of hours, the same happens.I try to restart (via windows), it logs off, shuts down the system, the coolers keep spinning, the motherboard lights are still on, but it doesn't boot up again. It remains like that. I have to restart via reset button or power button.

My Audiodg.exe process is currently using 2,786,070 kB (not just normal bytes, kilobytes) of Ram. 2.66gb+ of Ram! I have searched the web as well as this site for any problems. My audio is working fine though... I have no idea why this using so much ram. Im guessing a memory leak of some kind... I restartand it starts off at a normal pace...

My Windows 7 laptop has recently been through about a half-dozen supposed "fixes" to malware and registry repairs. It is still running high CPU cycles. How can I fix it (preferably without paying for anything)? I have AVG and will purchase their PC TuneUp when I get a chance, and I just bought SpeedyPC earlier tonight.So, I don't want to spend more money. I have tried Spybot, Malwarebytes, and another one (can't remember).

I recently purchased a small laptop (ASUS X43U increased RAM 4GB) and only in the past 2 weeks or so the CPU usage has been fluctuating up to 100% and as low as 4% ish. The computer is making this horrible noise all the time (I've been told its the cooling fan..) and is driving me insane. I have a fully up to date antivirus software, no games or additives installed, and really only ever have 1 or 2 windows of Google Chrome open at one time.

My computer memory usage is @ 100%. I have started my computer in safe mode and ran malware & panda antivirus to clean up my computer. When I reboot it runs great; however, the second time that I reboot-- it starts the memory usage @ 100% again. This is a vicious cycle.

I am currently not having any issues with XP and everything is working fine for what I use this computer for. That being said and considering my set up is an upgrade to Windows 7 worth it? Is Windows 7 really that big of an improvement over XP? The only thing that is even making me consider an upgrade to Windows 7 is for the chance to use DirectX 11.However, I've read that some older setups are having a hard time getting Windows 7 to work correctly because many of the necessary drivers needed for the computer to operate correctly are no longer supported. I know for a fact the last updates that were released for my BIOS and my motherboard chipset were in 2006. Will they even work in Windows 7?

I have just bought a new computer. It has Windows 7, 2.67Ghz i5, 450GB HD, and 4GB RAM. I am getting crazy surges in my Memory usage. I have been reading that the bloatware that comes with the computer (sony vaio stuff) can contribute to this (you may notice there are 99 processes). This surge (picture) occurred when I opened chrome but it was listed as using up around 25MB, which was also the largest program by memory usage. Can someone please explain how I can lower my memory usage? It has surged to 100% a couple of times before and i have only had this computer for 2 days! The computer averages 65% when I am simply surfing the web.

I have a Hp Pavilion dv7 with Windows 7 Home premium 64bit. on it. I have the pc now a year and recently it crashed because of a malware program. I backed everything up and restored my pc to shipping options. After this restore I get a lot of problems with my RAM usage (my pc has 3gb ram). When I work with normal things on the computer it mostly lasts for like 1 or max. 2 hrs before it freezes and i have to reboot. When i play a game like League of Legends, it mostly lasts for like 20 minutes and 50 minutes with game booster on. The point is, before my crash , my pc didn't have these RAM problems... I played LOL as much as i wanted to but now i can't play at all.

About a month ago my HP laptop began running very slow when I played any type of video. When i looked the CPU was at 100%. This could be a dvd, netflix, utube, flash, media player. It would continue to run slow after any of these applications were closed. If I restarted or let it go into sleep mode it would operate fine until I started a video of some sort. Ran every virus and malware program under the sun and no problems found. To rule out a hardware issue I restored the laptop to "out of box" state. Initially everything seemed fine. I played a dvd for 45 minutes and it was fine CPU never went about 10%. Satisfied that my virus was gone i started doing the windows updates. Tried to play a video last night and the CPU usage is back to 100% when i put in a dvd. HP dv7, i7, 8gb RAM.

until a couple of weeks ago my PC was running perfectly, quickly, etc but one day i turn it on and suddenly EVERYTHING is slow.For example, every time i open a folder in explorer, i have to wait about 30secs for all its contents to load, chrome is being un-usably slow (same with other browsers) even just loading a google search. when i listen to music it often cuts out for several seconds and everything freezes up etcetc but throughout this my CPU will stay very close to 0% (like it should be) i have run virus checks, windows repair, a DDS check (whatever that is) etc and nothing seems out of place. on top of all this now windows is suddenly starting to question if i am using genuine windows 7 (i am) AND have got a few seemingly random BSODs?
SPECS:
->Windows 7 home premium 64bit (service pack 1)
->i5 750 intel CPU @ 2.67GHz
->NVIDIA GeForce 210 graphics card
->4GB RAM

I've reinstall my Windows 7. But now i don't know the reason why my CPU always show that 100% CPU, even when starting! I've found that in window task manager there are three processes: cmd.exe, cmd.exe*32 and again,cmd.exe, (I don't run them) and if I end them CPU usage will be normal.

I have a Dell inspiron e1505. 2 gb RAM.
Essentially I am getting seemingly random spikes in my cpu usage where it ramps up to 100% and windows basically freezes for an extended period of time. Sometimes I simply have 1 google chrome tab open with no other apps actively running in the foreground and I get these cpu spikes. I just did a clean install of windows 7 to try and eradicate this and it persists. I am at a loss as to what the problem is. What is odd is even though the cpu usage spikes at 100% my available memory is almost always nearly around 50% still. So I am just not sure what is happening.
(unfortunately to no avail) High CPU usage, programs crashing, windows hanging - Tech Support Forum
Anyway like I said I eventually just did a clean install but the problem persists. Since the clean install I have not noticed and flash problems with chrome (as per the tech support forum thread) just random cpu spikes.

Just got a new computer, ZT Systems 3.4 i7-2600, 16 GB RAM, running Windows 7 64 bit. I love the computer, I love working on the OS. I do not love the massive amounts of bandwidth I'm using apparently from doing nothing.In 24 hours, we used 4.5 gigs of Internet bandwidth on this thing. Running Windows XP on our earlier computer ... yes, we were badly out of date ... we averaged about 25 gigs of bandwidth a MONTH.This is a concern because we have Comcast as our ISP, and they have a cap of 250 GB a month before they will turn you off.And yes, I can do the math, we could still do 10 times our previous usage before hitting the cap, but there's also the thing that I like to be in complete and total control of my system and have it behave the way I want it to, and I'm not liking this OS eating bandwidth like this.We did have some update downloads, but they were nowhere near a gig, let alone 4.5.Most of the usage over the 24-hour period was, basically, surfing the Internet.Like this morning, I logged onto the computer and was sending email from web browser (don't have address book moved over yet). I was watching usage just as an experiment. It was negligible, then bam, 182 MB. When I detected this problem, I downloaded Net Balancer to check on things, and it showed that huge spike was from svchost.exe. I'm also getting huge spikes from Service Traffic.
We do not have a virus or malware, have run scans.We do have a network set up, but our router is secure and we've seen no suspicious usage. No one is leeching off the system. In fact, most of the first 24 hours was spent without a router even hooked up and broadcasting, I had to replace the one we had because it wasn't Windows 7 compliant.I have very few startup programs running, only the necessary ones, have checked that.I'm getting a bit of extra bandwidth usage as per Net Balancer from Norton's stuff which came bundled with the computer, which I hate and am going to get rid of as soon as it's time to renew our licenses with ESET which we've used for years and uses microscopic bandwidth and CPU.If I need to provide any other info, I can, although I'm not great at screen shots.is this just a quirk of Windows 7 64 bit that we're going to have to live with and adjust to, or can it be made to stop? I've been scouring the Internet the last day, including this forum and have seen that this has been an issue for other folks. I've seen folks advised to check for viruses, check the processes running, etc., and then when everything checks out, it's like "OK."Well, this isn't OK as far as I'm concerned, I want to make it stop if I can. I've got too much into the computer to want to take it back and go two systems backward to XP, but I'm really not loving this. I want to make it stop.
