Several Windows Services Not Running

Jan 4, 2012

I had a virus on my computer which I have since cleaned (and double checked with several scans). The remaining problem on the computer was an inability to turn on my windows firewall (though the McAfee firewall was running). I followed the steps at My link through step 14 (though I forgot to make the system restore point at step 13). Then my FSS log began to look different. Here is the copy of my most recent FSS log.

Home Network Set But Windows 7 Says Can't Join Homegroup, No Home Network

Oct 8, 2012

5 month old Dell XPS 8500 Win 7 64 bit Pro as main computer connected by Wired Adapter, Upgraded Gateway 5632E also running Win 7 64 bit pro as second connected by Wireless. Both running Kapersky successfully. no network problems for 5 mo.

Both were successfully linked using homegroup. Had to take Gateway to a remote location to do a business demo. While there had to link to a local public WiFi. While connecting made mistake and left homegroup.

When Gateway returned to homebase a few days later it was fine, had no problems finding wireless but could not see or rejoin Dell machine homegroup. It would let me set up a new homegroup.

Went to Dell box and found 1) homegroup no longer existed, 2) router and network and wireless printing no longer found - Red X on the taskbar) even though internet was still working fine.

Took nearly a week of trying differernt fixes, on adapter- off adapter- different adapter reboot network, router, even updated router firmware (Yes I went through every ipconfig reset, renew, redecorate etc. I've used netsh functions to try to get evrything to reset. Changes services.msc settings per other posts. Finally in desperation, deleted every sub key in the registry related to network locational awareness and got the Dell to find the network, let me set it up as a "home" network and then even see the invitation to join the Gateway's homegroup.

Then I hit a wall- when I try to join- Win 7 says I can't join the homegroup because the network is not a "home network". Of course troubleshooting is useless and goes into an endless loop. Have searched in desperation for any way to make Win 7 return to a clean slate so it can sense that it really is on a home network without success. Applied the fix-it and hotpatch for when Win 7 gets stuck in public mode. No joy. Deleted the hide wizard subkey as suggested elsewhere. No Joy. Gut feeling says problem must lie in the NLA or peer networking somewhere but where?

Does anyone know of a method or set of steps (short of a clean reinstall of Win 7) to completely clear every thing the OS knows about my network and force it to acknowlege my network is a home network? Is there a registry hack that will clear the problem?

I know I could abandon the homegroup and do conventional file/print share but I am concerned that using that solution won't last as whatever is screwing up the homegroup could eventually screw regular sharing and then I'm back to reformating/reinstalling. I'm just about ready to join the Apple folks so I never have to work on Windows again.

Cannot Start Network Services

Sep 8, 2011

I am helping a friend who has a slow running windows 7 (32bit), quad 4 PC. I did a lot of tweaks to the machine - mostly aesthetic - but now I can't get her computer to to access the internet and the system restore is FUBAR.Here is what I did, in order:

~First I created a new system restore point.

~Then I found that she had Mcafee, Avira and windows defender installed, so I uninstalled McAfee and windows defender and rebooted - no problems. (I read that having more than one anti-virus can cause a slow PC)

~I ran super super antispyware and it found only a few tracking cookies but that was it.

~I then turned off aero themes and aero peek and snap.

~ I set her power settings to high performance because she likes to have a bunch of programs and windows open at a the same time.

~ I then went in to services.msc and disabled active x (she uses chrome), bitlocker, encrypt file systems, IP helper, microsoft iSCCI Initiator service, parental controls, remote desktop and configuration, smart card, media player network services.

~ I then went into msconfig and disabled a bunch of startup programs (itunes, quickplayer and the like)

I rebooted and everything was fine -- I went online and checked and things were great and the system was noticably faster. I then re-booted and there was no internet access and the network connection icon was missing. I checked and in msconfig, under services, and almost all of the microsoft services were unchecked. I tried re-checking the network information and some others I found via google, but after reboot they were still "stopped" - even though they were set to "automatic". I went into services.msc and tried to manually start them but got messages like "error 1068"Do I need to right click "run as administrator" when I select system.msc to make these start or since I was able to access service.msc without first selecting run as admin, do I already have administrator privileges?

Many Services Won't Start - Network And Much More Is Unavailable

May 21, 2012

Two days ago i had a popup message from Mcafee but i closed it without taking a look, was kind of in a hurry. Yesterday morning, after the first reboot, windows started but nothing seems to work.

1. Many services do not start -

Workstation
Server
DHCP client
DNS client
Audio Service
HP Wireless Assistant
and many more

2. Services are missing -Network Store Interface Service (i tried to add it manually through the registry)

3. Windoes Services dependencies tab cannot be accessed, i get an error message "Win32: The specified module could not be found."

4. When i try to start services i get different messages -Workstation - "Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start" (this is the most common message)Audio Service - "The audio service on the local computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs."HP wireless assistant service - This one starts and stops after a few seconds.

5. I have no network access, nor can i connec any USB devices.

6. the "RUN" option is missing from the start menu

7. I've noticed that "bowser" was missing from the services list in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetservices tried to add it manually as well, with no success

I did manage for a while to connect my mobile phone and transfer malwarebytes and combobox, but none could solve the problem. Now it won't recognice my mobile either.System restore is disabled for some reason, so that's not an option either.I can't even backup my data and prepare for a fresh installation (which is a bad option as is).

Windows Network Location: Public Versus Home At Home?

Jun 12, 2011

I'm reimaging one of my home systems that I intend to use as a "sterile" system (I will visit very a very limited selection sites on it, such as banking sites). I'm considering establishing the network location as "Public" instead of "Home", rationale being this would help prevent cross infection from other computers on my home network if they get a worm or virus. I do have friends that come over and hop on my network sometimes and who knows what contamination their systems have. Is this being overly paranoid? Will it cause annoying problems for this sterile system or other systems in my home network? I don't intend to share anything on this system with other computers on my home network. Seems to me that this ought to be the recommended setting for any computer always ... you can always share files using a USB drive if you really need to. Thoughts? Again maybe I am being overly paranoid. Back in the day there used to be worms that would look for ways to hop from system to system over the network, maybe that's much much harder these days. I do have a router between the DSL modem and my home network and I do run Norton Internet Security on all my systems?

Services Utility To Toggle And Restore/enable Disable Services

Feb 3, 2012

I'm trying to sort out issues with my Windows 7 machine and want to disable/set to manual services that I know are not needed, but every time I have done this in the past (a while ago now) I invariably run into an issue where I've inadvertently disabled a service that was needed by something, and I end up scratching my head (as all of my hair falls out around this point) and enabling everything just to sort it..

Is there any utility that anyone is aware of that lets you toggle service status, with the option to reset to default or reset to last status, while showing a list of services that I've changed?

I can't seem to word it properly for a search engine to find relevant results, and find usually specific services and not something I'm hoping exists.

I wish the Services.msc mmc had a checkbox or some sort of flag to show altered services so you could sort them by that, which would help a lot, but it doesn't.

File Sharing Across A Home Network - The Network Path Was Not Found"

Aug 9, 2011

I'm having difficulty trying to get my new Windows 7 pc set up to share files across my existing home (wired) network which consists of 1 desktop pc running WinXP and 1 laptop running WinXP.I want the 'C' drive on each of the 3 computers to be shared. I've had the 2 Windows XP computers set up and working like this for several years without a problem but I can't seem to get the 'C' drive on the Windows 7 computer to do the same. All 3 computers have the same workgroup name and none of them require passwords to log on to Windows. There are no problems with the firewalls on any of the machines. On the Windows 7 PC when I right click on the 'C' drive and select the 'Sharing' tab, I have set this up to be shared and when I click on the 'Advanced Sharing' button there is a tick in the 'Share this folder' box, the 'Share name' is 'C'. If I then click on the 'Permissions' button, this shows a 'Group or user name' 'Everyone' and this group has Full Control, Change and Read boxes ticked. As far as I can see there is nothing more I can do.

However from my Windows XP computer, when I go to My Network Places and double click on the icon for the Windows 7 'C' drive, I get the message "\Computername is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found"I've subsequently set up a sub folder (of the Windows 7 'C' drive) for sharing by right clicking on the folder, choosing 'Share with' and then selecting 'Specific people'. I then set up a group called 'Everyone' with read/write permissions. Now I can navigate to this folder from my 2 WinXP computers.

Unable To See Home Network Computers In Windows Explorer Network Screen

May 14, 2012

Unable to see home network computers in Windows Explorer Network screen.

I have a home network with 2 laptops and 1 desktop. The desktop I use as a "file server" in that all work done on the laptops is stored to the desktop. The desktop computer name is HAL. One laptop is fine and sees the network. The other just stopped seeing it; rebooted the laptop; rebooted HAL; did a number of refreshes without any luck. I opened EXCEL and found a worksheet that was listed that I knew was saved on HAL. Was able to open the file and when I tried the SAVE AS I could navigate through all of HAL just as normal. Went to Windows Explorer and still no HAL listed as a COMPUTER on the NETWORK. I have a internet connection so I know I am making it to the router at least. And when I check NETWORK AND SHARING CENTER it shows an active home network. The laptop is running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 Build 7601.

Network Constantly Changing Between Unidentified Public Network And Home

Aug 30, 2012

Home network with Wifi and ethernet. Using 3x Notebooks and 3x workstations. One of the workstations (W7 ultimate) keeps changing between Public and Home. When this happens, the internet connection dies. I cannot see other workstations either when on public network. Workstation using wifi. Does the same on cable. When it changes to Public, it disconnects from the internet and I cannot get to the router even though it has the workstation has an IP(DHCP or static). Default gateway and subnet is correct. TCP v4 is being used and nothing else is enabled.

Why is this happening?
- I have tried DHCP as well as Static addresses
- Reconfigured NIC(Netgear WG311T), uninstalled and reinstalled it.
- Removed Wifi connection and re-added it.
- Changed auth type, encryption type and keys to connection

Have I covered everything? The only thing different is that I installed a new router - Duo Plus 300wr. It cannot be the router because all the other notebooks connect to it wireless and so does my iPad, Android device and tablet...so it rules that out?

Cannot Detect One Particular Wireless Network - Others Fine Running Windows 7

Oct 24, 2010

I have just moved house and been given the internet details by the landlord. The provider is Virgin and the landlord asked for my MAC addresses of each device to allow access to the internet and gave me the password. I managed to connect on my iPhone and my housemate who is also running windows 7 off a laptop can also connect. However the network does not even appear in my wireless list. Several other wireless networks in the area are being detected but not the one in the house. I know it's not hidden as I can connect on other devices.

I have tried a manual setup with the network name, encryption etc and tick "allow connection even when network is hidden" but all to no avail. Unfortunately I have no access to the router as the landlord has that next door, however seems strange it would be a router issue if the other devices connect fine. I have been through all the settings with my housemate and ensured we have the same setup and am now thoroughly baffled and annoyed.

Laptop Cannot See Linux Server Running Samba On The Same Network

Oct 19, 2011

I'm setting up home media server. At least trying to...My home network looks like this:2 laptops (ubuntu/windows7) and a home server (ubuntuServer + Samba).I've samba setup in a way to provide password-less access to share folders. I secured it by blocking all IPs but the range I use at home. (I can provide config details upon request). With ubuntu laptop, I can connect to server without any issue. I just go to network tabs and can see windows WORKGROUP share smb share both pointing to same folder. So all works good. I can also mount external drive without issue, or create network drive. Connection never times out and it stays all good.

.Problem#1 Using "map network drive" tool I cannot use hostname (server.local) I've to use IP. This means that every time server box is asigned a new IP by my dumb router I have to delete the drive and run wizard again. This is very annoying. Since IP doesn'ts tay static I cannot use WINS or map IP in hosts file. So I'm open to suggestions from your side.

Problem#2 Windows 7 disconnects network drive every 15 minutes (I think), on SAMBA I configured to stay live all the time. But windows has its own mind so it doesn't keep connection live. This results in, lateness when I try to go to my computer as OS tries to find and add drive on network. Every 2 times in 5 this procedure gives me error, host cannot be reached or something like this. So I've to delete folder and remap drive again, which surprisingly works every time! so annoying! I don't have to do this in ubuntu at all, I don't understand why windows behaves in this way.

Problem#3 Very often I cannot ping linux server from windows using hostname, like this: ping server.local - but I can at the same time ping with IP. And also from ubuntu atm I can ping server.local without any problems.
