View 7 RepliesI recently noticed my network and battery icons have disappeared off my taskbar. When I tried to put them back, the check boxes in customize notification area were greyed out. I did a little research and people who had the same problem said to run "sfc /scannow" in command prompt. After attempting that, cmd gave me an error.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've had a weird error with Windows 7. It happened after I tried to remove the watermark and edit user32 (or something like that). I do have the battery icon, but it's missing the battery info. I believe it's a explorer related error, because each time this happens and I go to right click the desktop explorer.exe stops responding.
Does anybody have any information on this, or how I could repair my system to a state before? System restore is disabled on this machine.
Some of the icons normally showing what a program type is are missing now. I HAVE all the DESKTOP icons and those in the system tray. But in Windows Explorer lists or in Word Perfect and Word lists of file names, many of the small icons that normally appear next to a program's name, or showing what type of document or file it is, are now missing. Not all, just some. I have mostly open square boxes. It doesn't matter whether I'm looking at a list of files I've created, or looking at the items in various system folders: most are just empty open squares instead of the individual icons. I have Windows 7 64-bit OS , both Mozilla 17 and IE9 browsers.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI reinstalled a Windows 7 OS, and now the volume icon has disappeared from the taskbar. The only way I can adjust the volume is to go into Control Panel. I found the "turn system icons on or off" window, and although the volume icon says "show icon and notifications," it's not on the taskbar, so I don't know what more to do.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI had my new desktop with Windows 7 Home 64bit for about 2 weeks now and so far im loving it. The one and only problem im having is the volume icon in the taskbar.Sometimes when my Windows boots up, the volume icon is missing from the taskbar. I take a look in "turn system icons on or off" and the Volume, Network and Action Center are greyed out (cant click them.) It does this once every 2 or 3 reboots. The only way to fix it is to reboot. Its not a huge problem but its very annoying having to reboot 2 times.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using dual booted laptop Windows 7 and Linux. I opened my Disk management and I right clicked the Linux partition drive and I selected "Delete Volume", After that i formated that partition. Now when I restarted my laptop, i got error like this:
"Grub loading. Error: Unknown files grub rescue>".
Then I created a live USB contains SGD iso file. I booted this USB on booting time and selected Windows boot. It asked in the black screen with options "Start windows normally " and " Launch and Start up Repair and " I selected the second option and I tried to restore my back up files, then I can see that C drive contains only the files and folders which I was stored in D drive. and D drive shows only 200 MB size. I dont have CD drive in my laptop. Before this problem:
C drive is -58GB
D drive is -141GB
Now C drive shows 141GB and contains the files which were in my D drive.
I have a toshiba laptop running on windows 7. One day I turned it on and it said "bootmgr is missing press ctrl alt delete to restart."I have been researching how to fix it and have made a repair cd, which boots it and sends me to the start up process, but when I get to the command prompt option and type "bootrec/fixboot" it says "the volume does not contain a recognized file system."
View 6 Replies View RelatedSystem has been blessed with a new lease of life. Faster, more responsive and my god Windows 7 looks sexy! Now, if there is a tiny niggle of an issue, then it is why I am posting today. I have the Creative Xtreme Audio soundcard on my system and Windows 7 has updated it to all the latest drivers. Sound seems ok and thus far it is not reporting any problems. I have the Creative Media Organiser and all the other mod cons etc etc. However, where has my Volume Panel interface gone? In Win XP, I had it permanently attached to my task bar. Basically, a little volume icon if you like in bottom right corner with everything else. You right click the icon and then you get the entertainment console where you can change settings etc. Looked nice, even in XP. I must admit I'm a tad disappointed it's not here in Windows 7 and also confused as to why everything else is here except that facility.Do I have to download it separately? I don't fancy putting my original CD in that came with PC from day one as I'd have to manually look for that particular component and extract it. Infact, I don't even know if that is an option as I am pretty sure it formed part of the whole "Medisource Go" package and I have that and it's up to date.

View 14 Replies View Relatedmy system is a dell desktop running windows 7 64-bit home premium. i have 8 gb ram, and a 2.8 ghz intel core i7 processor. i was fooling around with windows backup and restore and i created a new user account. i rebooted and noticed that in my primary user account, the one i always use (not the new one), a good portion of my desktop icons had disappeared. i also noticed that in the new account i created, only 1 of the many desktop icons displayed. most, if not all, of the disappeared icons are shortcuts to applications such as vmware, itunes, Internet downloader, etc. but these applications are still there within the start menu under "all programs". unfortunately, i'm not sure exactly how long the missing icons have been gone. i just noticed the problem a few days ago.all the previous versions of my desktop folder, dating back to last july, seem to contain only the shortcuts that display now, not the missing icons, and i'm pretty sure that all the icons were present back then. it doesn't make sense. how could all the icons display if they weren't in the desktop folder to begin with? i have no idea of how i could have deleted only some of the shortcuts either. i realize i could just recreate the shortcuts on the desktop, but something weird happened here, and i'd like to know what it is. also, there is one icon that displays that isn't in the desktop folder but is in the "links" folder. it's a dvd-making application called corel windvd 2010.
i tried rebuilding the icon cache and it didn't bring back the missing icons. all it did was change my corel video studio application icon from a generic one to the little camera logo like it's supposed to be. there are still no icons displayed on the desktop of the new user account that i created, except for the corel windvd 2010 one and a gadget for my corel video studio pro x application (it's a movie editing software package). strangely, the gadget does appear in the new user account and so does the corel windvd 2010 icon.i have a screenshot of my desktop from before the icons disappeared and from that i can see that about 18 icons disappeared. furthermore, the default desktop folder doesn't contain any shortcuts either, which probably explains why no icons appear in the new account i created. shouldn't the default desktop folder contain the shortcuts?i tried running a microsoft utility that's supposed to fix broken desktop shortcuts but that didn't fix the problem. are there any other locations that might contain the missing icons other than just the "desktop" and "links" folders? perhaps within the registry or something?

However the icons I put there from Tools function ie Delete columns, font size, copy, cut etc have all disappeared I tried to reinstalling them by going to Tools � Custom-. When I try to select an icon for example Edit � copy or even delete column arrow and try to move it up to the tool bar on top of the page it will not work.

After doing so, some of my program icons are gone.I did some research, and already tried deleting the icon cache, which did not help any. Below I have a picture of what some of my icons have changed to. One program is SUPERAntiSpyware. I have it set to run a scan each night and I usually click on the icon the notification area to see results. Also use Karen's Replicator to backup some data each night.
how do I get these icons back in place?
I have Windows live messenger and Skype and Microsoft Office, so far they're the only ones I noticed that are doing this. But when I open them, the icon in the taskbar shows a basic windows classic icon, it does not show the proper icon for these programs. I pin the program to the taskbar, and then unpin it, and it shows up correctly for a while, but then goes back to classic windows icon. How can I try and fix this?
View 5 Replies View RelatedYesterday a user complained that there laptop had slowed down in recent days. I went ahead and ran msconfig the I deleted most of the programs that were running on startup. I also stopped some services. The PC speed improved but when the user restarted the laptop there were no icons or taskbar.
I pressed ctrl-alt-del and started task manager. I started explorer.exe and my computer showed up with the drives on the machine. I also ran sfc /scannow and it did give any errors, i created another profile and it has the same results. When I right click on the desktop nothing shows up. I booted into safe mode and there are no restore points to recover to.
I suspect the problem is registry related and was caused by me deleting the startup programs. I am not sure how I can restore the laptop without reinstalling it.
All of a sudden running programs that I have minimized no longer have an icon on the task bar so that I can open them up when needed. I have to go to the task manager to get to them. Not sure what I did but I can't seem to get them to display on the task bar again.

Icons missing on both desktop and start up menu, managed to restore my adobe ones but still unable to sort my office icons out.I've tried other ideas off multiple forums but as yet I've been unsuccessful.Can not repair/uninstall office. tried to rebuild icon cache.db , used replacement icon files that were posted on a forum and copied them over. Some of the programs I have set to start of boot (not very many I might add) aren't loading their icons in the notification area. However, if I log off, and log back on again, they appear again. Same if I restart explorer.exe.
I have tried clearing the cache (works until a reboot), and various other methods I have found online, all doing similar things. And while they work after a log off, to explorer.exe restart, they will not work after a fresh reboot. I have also run sfc /scannow and it finds no violations. Is there anyway to replace my explorer.exe from an SP1 extraction?

View 5 Replies View RelatedFirst, when I try to release a USB device (thumb drive) from W7, it says, "OK to remove USB storage device" but, the device STILL has power applied to it. XP cut the power prior to allowing you to remove the drive. What gives? W7 has corrupted the drive several times already, and WILL NOT remove power even though the device drops off your explorer.
Second weird problem is missing icons after a program is installed. I install Fallout 3 for instance, and the program start icons are missing. I have to manually copy and paste the launcher into my Games folder in the start menu from the explorer files. Where are the start icons going? Never happened in XP, ever.
Third, how do you arrange your start menu like XP with the "open all users" from the start menu? W7 did away with this. I like to GROUP my programs into folders so the start menu stays managable;
Applications
Games
Accessories
System Tools
Fourth, it seems to interpolate to a CRT! on many resolutions, resulting in a terrible blurry mess Why? A CRT has no native resolution, that's why I keep it (Dell 19" Trinitron). Are there 64-bit drivers I can't find? It will only accept it's "generic" drivers. XP allowed any resolution I want with 100% clarity. It isn't the monitor. AERO makes it WAY worse, too. Same Nvidia 260GT card in both systems, but with 64-bit drivers video card drivers.
I have all new 64-bit drivers and hardware, and W7-64 bit has all manner of BSOD's and lock-ups. Thank God the, "roll back to last bootable configuration" works. I've used W 3.11 on up and this OS is driving me nuts right now. First BSOD I had to reset the CMOS to fix a "hardware" issue that would not let it boot into windows. But, that's SOFTWARE.
Then, it seemed to not keep time right, so I shut down and removed power, replaced the CMOS battery just to be sure and AGAIN it would not boot to windows. I had to roll back the install to the last good configuration to fix this BSOD. So, I have issues all right. I can't tell what so far. It may be a bad mainboard (MSI P55 GD80). It isn't heat as the CPU has never gone above 40C. I hope it was a bad Lithium cell that was corrupting the BIOS. We'll see.
Once it is running, my experience with this hard to operate OS has not been too good compared to XP's super polished user interface. W7 seem text based over visual, as in GRAPHICAL user interface. W7 control panel is awful. There are a lot of good updates, but the interface is not easy to work with quickly. Too busy and too text based interface. I turned off all the AERO stuff as it just gets in my way.
Once I forget how good XP is, I guess I'll learn to live with this OS. But if this OS is like Apple's, leave Apple alone!
I noticed that whenever I downloaded anything, it would not show up on my desktop, but when I went to my desktop folder, it would be there. Do you know any way to fix this? Also, when I try to delete something, it would delete from the desktop folder , but would still be there in my physical desktop.
