Virtual High Res Screen For Low Res Netbook

Aug 3, 2009

I recently bought a netbook (ASUS N10J) which supports a maximum resolution of 1024x600. I have installed windows 7 on it and it runs pretty well however i have one issue...

Sometimes when you have a window open it will be too big to fit on the screen and cant see the buttons at the bottom.

I know you can get multiple desktops but what i would like is multiple desktops that run onto each other so if a window on desktop 1 goes off screen the bit off screen would appear on a desktop 2.

Hopefully that makes at least some sense

Does anyone know of any application or option ive missed that will let you do it?

Blue Screen On Start Up - New Netbook

Dec 7, 2012

I recently got a new netbook and have had a problem with it. On 3 occasions now, during startup I have got a blue screen and although only around 4 weeks old, I have already performed a full restore. The netbook in question is an aspire one d270 windows 7 starter (not my choice of netbook but neither here nor there). Obviously I have programs like adobe up to date but other than using microsoft programs I have only installed avast and firefox.

Netbook Stuck On Logging Off Screen?

Sep 14, 2011

when I got it back from her (she's not a pro, btw) and tried to turn it on to make sure everything was clean, it was stuck on a 'logging off' screen. I've tried pressing Control Alt Delete, as well as turning it off with the power switchControl Alt Delete has no effect; the power switch turns it off, but when I turn it back on, the same screen comes up. Heeeelp! All the solutions I found by googling suggest what to do when the home screen comes up. The home screen isn't coming up at all. Is there anything I can do with it in the state it's in now

Screen Dims When Unplug Netbook

Aug 4, 2011

I have a gateway netbook. Normally when it is plugged in and I unplug it the screen dims. Yesterday it stopped doing that. Now when I unplug it stays at the same brightness. Just to clarify, it seems as though whether it is plugged in or not, the brightness is like it used to be when I unplugged it (it is dimmed either way). It's not that important because the thing stays plugged in most of the time, but I am curious as to how this could happen. I just reinstalled Windows on it a few days ago. It is 32-bit ultimate, if that matters.

ASUS Netbook Won't Boot (stuck At Grey Screen)

Aug 22, 2011

My netbook froze on friday night. Try to restart, but was stuck at grey screen. It has asus logo and eee pc written. The options f2 to run setup and tab to display bios post yields nothing. In other words, pressing either button doesn't work. I have removed the battery, pressed the power button without the power cord, put everything back in, tapping f2. So far, no progress. Few times, i try pressing f2 similtaneously as i hit the power button, i got american megatrends screens. Still, none go further. I have this netbook for a little over a year. The warranty just expired a month ago. It is running window 7 starter already installed when i got it at bestbuy. I had contacted asus support, and tried some i mentioned above. I prefer to do this by myself.

Resolution Too High For Screen

Jan 16, 2009

I have installed Windows 7 beta. Previously I was using Windows Vista Ultimate. The Graphics is an AMD X1200 and is plugged in to a LG plasma screen using the hdmi interface. When the installation of windows 7 reboots the resolution automatically sets itself to 1960 x 1080 hd resolution although my screen doesn't seem to handle the resolution. It is meant to be able to take a 1080p input and scale it to 720p but in this case i get a blank screen with 'out of range' displayed.

Previously I had the resolution set to 1360 x 768 on Vista. I can plug in a second monitor which extends the desktop to it and then I can change the resolution in the settings for the TV to 1360 X 768 and the TV displays fine, but it seems to store these settings as a multi monitor profile and as soon as the second monitor is removed the single screen reverts to the 1080p resolution.

I also searched through the registry for xresolution and changed any references to 1960 X 1080 to 1360 X 768 but it still set a 1080 resolution on reboot. These settings must be stored somewhere so if anyone knows how i can change them with another monitor plugged in that would be great then i change back to my TV and it will load with a 1360 X 768 resolution.

Virtual PC In Win 7 Beta Blue Screen

Apr 20, 2009

I installed Virtual PC 2007 SP1 on the host OS of Windows 7 Beta. I installed Windows Server 2003 as the guest with SharePoint Services 3.0 installed. When I run the virtual machine, after I have logged in at random times then host operating system will freeze up followed by a blue screen of death which says something along the lines of "CPU2 timer did not respond in the allocated amount of time".

My computer is an ASUS laptop (W7Sg) with a Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0Ghz Santa Rosa processor and 3.0GB of RAM.

How can I fix this issue as I need to be able to virtualize within Windows 7?

Virtual Machine Screen Resolution Issue

Nov 15, 2009

I was wondering if you could help me with a computer problem that I have. I like to play a really old DOS game called Championship Manager 9798. This was only compatible with Win 98 & you'd to reboot the machine in DOS mode to play it. When XP came out, I was able to play this through a DOS box. When Vista came out, I was then able to play it with a virtual machine, with Win 98 as the operating system. I could make the screen go full size by pressing Alt+Enter &this was on a Dell wide screen monitor, & everything ran fine.

My problem is that I have just bought an HP wide screen laptop. The Virtual machine runs, but when I press Alt+Enter, it goes full screen, but there are two black bands about an inch wide down the side of the screen, meaning that the game is only about half of the screen in width.
Is there anything that you can think of that can be done? I’ve tried the Internet to see if there's anything, but all it says is that Virtual Machines aren't with wide screens. I’m confused with this, as it works on my wide screen monitor (with my PC), or are there different variations of “wide screen”?

Someone suggested RDP onto the virtual machine, which you cant do with Win 98. SO Ive tried to go back to getting the game to work via DOS box on an XP virtual machine. I managed this, but when I RDP onto it, all you see is a small DOS icon in the middle of the screen, so Im totally stuck & would give my right arm if you could get it to work properly on my laptop.

I just installed windows 7 ultimate sp1 - Like the title says I'm seeing 35% cpu usage with nothing going on. I googled around and ran traces to see which driver it was, turned out the ahci driver was doing it. The USB driver showed similarly high latency but that can be delt with later. Most forums recommend upgrading your drivers but this problem has stayed constant both with microsoft's stock drivers for everything and after running windows built in search for drivers even after I manually grabbed the latest drivers for everything. url...BIOS is up to date4 GB RAM - Corsair something or otherEVGA Geforce 8800 GT450W psu1 DVD burner (sata)5 hard drives (sata) plugged into all but the first sata port because that caused nothing but headaches for me. Update - switching from AHCI to IDE in BIOS fixed the problem.

Windows 7 Virtual PC: "Cannot Attach The Virtual Hard Disk ..." Error?

Sep 6, 2012

Got a new Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit machine, found that it did not come with virtual PC. Downloaded the critical patch Windows6.1-KB958559-x64-RefreshPkg.msu and installed it. Windows Virtual PC shows up in my Start Menu. Good so far. I go through the steps to create a virtual machine and use the option to 'use an existing vhd file' and when I click 'Create' I get the above pop-up message "Cannot attach the virtual hard disk to the virtual machine. Check values and try again". A factual message but completely useless as with all error messages from Microsoft. I have tried the following:1. When I attach that vhd using Disk Management, it mounts in drive E:, I can see the files and browse the dirs in E:. In the Disk Management View, the drive shows up as 127 Gigs but 107 is unallocated space. The physical size of the vhd is only 25 Gigs2. Others in my company were able to create the virtual machine with the same vhd, checked the byte size and timing, so nothing is wrong with the vhd file itself.

3. Tried to create after shutting down all virus protection including the Micorsoft antimalware protection service. No luck4. Tried Vhd resize to resize the vhd to a smaller size (since it showed up in disk management as 127 Gigs, I thought maybe it was that size), but VHDResizer could not open the input file, gave an errors "Can only load fixed or dynamic drives"

Cannot Start Virtual Application, The Application Is Blocked From Running As A Virtual Application

Oct 26, 2011

Our office has an old program that we still need to use when upgrading our PC's to Windows 7. The program will run fine if you start a windows virtual PC and install and run it. However, based on the needs of our office, I need to be able to run Windows XP mode and simply have an icon for our users to click to take them to the application. If I install the program in windows XP mode, and then add a shortcut to the file under all users/start menu, a shortcut is placed in the appropriate place on the windows 7 machine and I can copy that shortcut ot the desktop. The program runs fine until you restart the computer. Once you restart the computer and double click the link on the windows 7 desktop to the program running in windows XP mode, it says:

Cannot start virtual application. The application is blocked from running as a virtual application.

I read some other posts saying to put a new shortcut in the all users/start menu folder. This works, but only until our users restart their computer. The next time the computer is up, the problem happens again. This is not an acceptable solution to have to create a new shortcut for each workstation each time the computer is restarted.

What Is Best OS For A Netbook

Dec 12, 2011

I was recently reading a tech magazine which I borrowed from my school's library earlier today. While checking this magazine, I found ( at the 82nd page ) a review about about JoliCloud (or Joli OS), which is an operating system optimized for small notebooks and netbooks. At first look, it seemed a good OS, so I decided to look for it on the web, and read some users opinions about it , ect.Unfortunately, I didn't find any review about it at Cnet, but nevermind. After about an hour of surfing, I've found a bunch of operating systems that are optimized and run smoothly on netbooks, rather than Windows 7 , perhaps.I got confused, so I came here to ask for help to choose the best operating system to run it next to windows 7, for some reason. My prefered way to run it, is on a virtual machine, but please tell me if running it by another way is still better and easier.Well, to help me (more) finding an OS that fits my needs:

1) Free, absolutely free please!
2) Power saver, just to keep more battery life.
3) Customizable, I like to give my special touch to the OS interface and apparence, just to be happy with it !
4) Good for web surfing, and mini games, because that's what I usually use my netbook for.

Characters in bold are more important, if the other recommendations are not available, it's ok.I have a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom CPU (2CPUs) and an up to 900MB of RAM. (HP mini 311-1000CA)I am currently running windows 7.

Netbook: Win 7 HP Or Pro ?

Oct 29, 2009

My girlfriend, a student planning on taking advantage of the student deal going on right now, is going to be getting a new netbook. Unfortunately, Windows 7 Starter is sort of lacking in some features and she wants to upgrade.

Since they're both $30, what it comes down to is this:

Should she get Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Pro? It's going to be on a netbook, so I'm thinking HP is the way to go, but if Pro doesn't require any additional resources, it might work as well.

Also, this will sound very noob-tastic, but: Would it be easier on the netbook to install the 32-bit version of the OS, or does it not matter (32 vs 64 in terms of system resources)?
