I've just installed Win 7 Home premium in my PC. OS on SSD and attached a 1TB WD hdisk for storage. File access, eg .. transfer, copy, delete to and from the hdisk etc... are really very slow. My previous PC running on XP no such problem. However,there is no such issue with the SSD. I'm very new to Win 7.

You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." I did a search but could not find anything related to this error in Win 7. I have found some others attached to Win XP but have to do with the installation of some software which prevents access to explorer.exe. When I boot in safe mode this issue does not appear...

Each time that I click on it the Windows message, "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." pops up. I am the system administrator so this should NOT be a problem but apparently many out there are dealing with this as well. I can delete, move and even copy the file but I cannot run it. There is no option for override with password or grant permission. It just says that I cannot run it. Also, the system I am running is Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just did a new build and i put my 2 storage drives from my old PC in it and installed windows on a new crucial M4 ssd.When i try to open the storage drives under my computer i sometimes get a green progress bar that takes a bit to load. I tried turning indexing off, setting folder type to general n so on and the problem still occurs. I also noticed with winamp that when i click on it and scroll down and it has to load the duration of the songs winamp becomes unresponsive for a few seconds. I use PS3 Media Server to watch my video files on my TV and it also is laggy compared to before. It takes a good 10 seconds to load the list of files and takes a while to load a file when before it was instant.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI"ve got a several month old Toshiba X505 870 with I5-720CPU, 4GB of memory and TWO Hitachi 7200 rpm 500GB SATA II hard drives. The system is used primarily for initial examination of digital images, with each image being around 20MB (so we're not talking big files). Accessing images to display previews is perceptibly slow. Yes, the system is tuned to the best of my ability, although I'm certainly open to other tuning things I've missed or just don't know. Both disks have been, and are REGULARLY defragmented - both show 0% fragmentation. I've thrown away the original O/S with all the trialware, stupidity, and goop, and installed Windows 7 Home Premius, 64-bit. All the drivers I'm aware of are current, including the Intel storage drivers. Other than the periodic Side-By-Side errors that show up every couple days, I'm NOT getting application or system errors. Both disks are set to the setting for best performance (I can't recall the wording but something like write-delay or whatever)...
In Bridge or Lightroom I"m not getting CPU bound, but this thing beats on the disk(s) quite a bit, and takes MUCH longer than the desktop system to display images. Admittedly, "MUCH LONGER" is probably between .5 and 2 seconds, but it's still a LOT longer than my desktop takes to display the same previews. The desktop is a slightly faster CPU (I7 920), but it also has standard 7200 rpm drives for images, and it's SIGNIFICANTLY faster at retrieving and displaying images in Bridge or Lightroom...Is there any PRACTICAL (no, putting in 2, 500GB SSD drives is not practical) way to speed up disk access on this laptop?
I've been through a very singular problem for the last few days.My Windows 7 suddenly become slow to make USB Mass storage devices ready to access, but this happens only the first time I connect them on my computer.If I start the computer and connect the USB Mass storage device (that was recognized a long time ago) it takes almost 1 minute to be ready for use... After that, every USB Mass storage device that I connect to the computer opens almost instantly.If I restart the computer, the same thing happens. I've tried to reinstall drivers, to disable security, looke for a service that controls it, verified the power options and verified every hardware.
View 5 Replies View Related(In summary - cant get the download speeds I am expecting on my new computer - and sometimes cant get connected to the Internet at all)I am having trouble browsing the internet - but the trouble is the "symptoms" keep changing. So its very hard for me to diagnose the problem.Basically - my browsing (download) speed varies from 0.5 mbps to 8 mbps and sometimes will cut out all together for prolonged periods. Typically it stays at about 2mbps. I am used to having a steady 8 mbps. I thought it might be an issue with my ISP - so I set up another computer next to my new one and ran speed tests simultaneously (one right after the other). The old computer was consistently getting ok results whilst my new one was not - so I think its unlikely to be an ISP issue. There were no other computers on the network at the time.
I thought it might be hardware related (it is a new computer) so I ran one of those linux live discs on my new machine - and again got good results - whilst when I returned to windows - I get poor speeds again. So this leads me to think it is not a hardware or a wireless network issue. (Linux wasnt running as much stuff as win 7 was). What is especially frustrating is sometimes it works fine on windows and sometimes it doesnt - and there doesnt seem to be any obvious cause. Also since it keeps fluctuating its very hard to tell if what you do is fixing it - or if its just naturally reverted back to normal. Further - sometimes I can be getting half my normal expected speed (4 mbps) but as I dont use that much bandwidth I wont notice until it drops below 2.nd in what may be a completely different issue sometimes I will get zero downloads speed (but wireless strength remains high) - if I go to system config and type "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" this "seems" to fix this issue - but not the slow speed issueIts my first win 7 computer.

Two of the computers are WINDOWS 7 machines, one is a Windows Vista Ultimate machine and the other two are Linux. Everything works fine and always has worked fine until yesterday. On one of Windows 7 machines I can copy a very large file from the machine onto other machines and get 27 Mb/s transfer speed. On the other hand, transferring a file from any other machine (Windows 7, Vista, Linux) on to this "broken" computer I only get up to 10 Kb/s.
So, for example, transferring a 500 mb .avi file onto the broken machine will show as requiring 3 days to complete. Here is the perplexing thing... running Fedora 14 in a virtualbox (with a bridged network adapter) on this broken computer allows me to transfer a file onto this broken machine at normal speeds. So, the exact same 500 MB .avi file that Windows 7 says will take 3 days to transfer will completely transfer over the same network with the same hardware onto the same machine within seconds.
Also, this machine dual boots into Linux and everything works fine under Linux... I tried updating the driver with Hardware Manager in Windows 7... but it says that I already have the latest driver. I don't know where to start with troubleshooting this as it seems pretty obvious that it is something wrong at the level of Windows 7 on this machine and I do not have this problem at all on other machines.
i have bought a notebook with vista 32 bit home basic and didnt like vista so i upgraded it to windows 7 64bit after 1 day usage. Generally i found new os fine but i have a problem with file copying from my desktop (running xp sp3). My transfer speed is only 1.5 mbyte per second. Notebook has atheros 5007eg (54mbit) wireless lan and desktop has realtek gigabit lan. And my router is airties rt-205 with 125mbit wireless signal. I have done the following things but it's still same.

Recently my compaq presario CQ56 has been running alot slower than usual, I have scanned with Spybot SnD, ESET and Free Malwarebytes, none of them found any viruses. I have a lower spec computer and it is faster on the same internet connection so I know it isnt the connection. This has only been happening for a week, I havent downloaded anything in that time.

The issue is that the file transfer (these are usually HD movies) from my laptop to WDTV are rather slow having in mind it's a gigabit network connection... The speed tops 15 MB/s. Same thing if I connect WDTV directly with my laptop.
The switch indicates (green light) it has set-up a gigabit connection both with WDTV and my laptop.
I have disabled autotuning, RDC, AV software etc. Tried with jumbo frames, disabling flow control - EVERYTHING
my network setup is:
-TP-Link wirelesAP/Router with DD-Wrt installed
-Computer A - File server win xp sp3
-Computer B - My laptop win 7 x64 sp1
-Computer C - Wife's pc win 7 x64 sp1
issue: file transfer from/to xp from my laptop very slow while PC is turned off. as soon as i turn pc on all gets good. this looks really weird to me, all of these 3 are connected with cable not wireless, i also have tried changing the port of the laptop cable on the router but didnt change anything.
I'm connected to my work network using a PPTP VPN connection. The browsing of files on the remote server is extremely slow in Windows 7. I have another computer that has Windows XP on it, and there it's fast as always.Local network file browsing works fine.

When I try to open a project folder in any of the programs I use it takes 2-3 minutes for it to load all the filesThere are just over 10,000 files in the folder, they are all small files (nothing larger than 100k), and on the XP machine it loads in an instant.I have done everything I can find online (turned off indexing, changed the folder prefs, etc) and nothing works. View 4 Replies View RelatedI am getting this error all the time with Windows 7. I open a text file I want to edit, then go to save my changes and I get this error:
"The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process"
I have full admin rights, running Win7 Ultimate x64 SP1. From a bit of research I have seen where many others have been experiencing this problem or something similar too. The only "fix" (that doesn't work all the time) is to close explorer.exe and then restart it to "release the handle"? Anyway, this is not acceptable for to money and time I spent upgrading/configuring this new OS from XP where I never had this problem and seriously cuts down my productivity.
Is there a fix for this? Has Microsoft even acknowledged this as a bug yet? I can duplicate this scenario the second or third time I try to edit/save/delete a text file and I know that explorer.exe is the problem or a big part of it in any case. I don't want to go back to XP x64 but having to deal with this headache 10-20 times a day is just too much to ask.

View 1 Replies View RelatedOur network runs on a 2008 active directory domain, and our domain controller also is an internal DNS server; we have an additional server that is our internal web server and hosts a RAID 1 mirrored file share for everyone to put their data (which we have folder redirection configured on for the My Documents folder, and people also access it as a mapped network drive). It all works flawlessly, except on two client computers.
1. The two clients can ping the file server both by name and IP.
2. Clients can can log into the file server by remote desktop, by name.
3. Nslookup shows that the clients can communicate with the DNS server and resolve the domain name to the correct IP address.
4. Clients can access the internal sites at http://<file server>
5. Clients cannot access the file share at \<file server>, but can access it at \192.168.1.104.
6. I have already flushed the DNS cache on the client machines.
Its really odd, because it would seem like this is a DNS issue but everything else works: http dns works, nslookup works, and I already flushed the DNS cache. These are the only computers having any issues at all. All the computers on the network have their dns server manually assigned, and all the servers have a DHCP reservation so their IP wont change.

I have an external HDD that contains data originaly created with a windows XP PC. When plugged into my Windows 7 PC, I cant seem to be able to save changes. E.g. if I dbl click on a .txt file to open it in notepad, make changes and then try to save it, notepad says 'access is denied'. Similarly for ultraEdit. If I launch UltraEdit selecting 'run as administrator' this solves the problem. But that doesnt help when opening files by dbl clicking on them. Under file properties, I have checked the files does not have a read-only attribute, and the Administrators group has full-control. I have changed the file-ownership to me. I am configured as an Administrator rather than a Standard-user. If I create a new file on this drive with the Windows 7 PC, I can save changes no bother.I have compared the file properties for the 2 files and the only difference I can spot is that the newly created file has me listed under the Security tab; whereas the old file only has group names listed.

I do a lot of photo editing with Nikon software and CS5. My critical problem affects CS5 64bit, Nikon CaptureNX2 - 32 bit, and Nikon ViewNX2 - 32 bit. Suddenly last night I could not save labels in ViewNX2 or files in CaptureNX2 and CS5. The error message was the red circle with an 'x' saying I did not have access privileges to change the file, that I will have to go to the file and change the access privileges in the files/info properties in the operating system. I can save files with a new name, I just can't edit and save again. I have over 40,000 image files; changing access privileges would be close to impossible, even if I knew how to do it.
I took a look at the properties of the folder where the images were and, for some unknown reason, the whole folder was marked as 'Read Only'. Unchecking that attribute did not solve the problem, I still can't edit the files.
This problem does not occur in other programs, notably Word and Excel 2003.
