Using Easy Transfer When Upgrading XP 32bit To Windows 7 64bit

Nov 14, 2012

My OS is XP Pro 32-bit. Using Easy Transfer 32-bit saved selected files to external HD. After installing Win 7 64-bit, can I use the resident Easy Transfer to reapply/import the earlier saved files?

Upgrading Of Windows 7 32bit To 64bit

Apr 24, 2011

I know that one copy of windows 7 can only activate one computer. I have two, one already with windows 7 32bit installed and one without windows 7. I plan on buying a new one, installing windows 7 on my second computer and upgrading windows 7 to 64bit on the other. If I upgrade, will windows use the old activation key or require me to enter a new one, because that computer came with windows 7 32bit so I don't have the disc.

Upgrading From 32bit Vista To 64bit Windows 7?

May 6, 2012

I am trying to go from 32 bit Vista to 64 bit Windows 7. The 32 bit Vista was installed by mistake. My system can handle a 64 bit OS. Now I have finally found the time to upgrade. But the 64 bit installation DVD can't be read from my OS. I have tried setting up my CMOS so that I can boot from the DVD but I have run into some issues. First of all, when I look at my keyboard during the boot procedure, I noticed that the little light which indicates that one row of buttons are to be used for F1 - F12 keys, the little green led light goes on and off. Sometimes, during the boot process, it is on, sometimes it is off.

The CMOS procedure tells me I can hit F12 and set the boot order. I can hit F12 but when I go into that menu, I notice my keyboard is dead. The CPU does not accept any commands from me. So I need to power off and power on and try again. The CMOS procedure tells me I can hit DEL and that launches the whole CMOS utility. There I can set the boot order so that the DVD is run first. But when I save and exit, I notice my keyboard is dead again. This time, the screen is showing things being set and loaded and I am prompted to hit any key to show I am sure that I want to boot from the DVD.

I hit the Y key and I hit the spacebar, but it becomes clear that my input is ignored since my keyboard is being ignored. And the ol' Vista OS is loaded. Is there any way to set things up in the VISTA OS to force a boot from the DVD? I guess I can load the OS in save mode and format the C drive, but if I do that I might risk having a dead computer since the CMOS does not seem to be trusting enough to boot from the DVD drive even if you tell it to.

Microsoft has this page of links: [URL]
And then there is this link: [URL]

And the Notes section specifies that I need boot off the DVD drive: "To install a 64-bit version of Windows 7 on a computer running a 32-bit version of Windows, you'll need to start, or boot, your computer using a 64-bit Windows 7 installation disc or files."

Upgrading From 32bit To 64bit?

Jun 21, 2011

Recently, going back over my quasi-gaming rig, I found out that my processor (Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200) is 64-bit, not 32. I've been running 32-bit Windows 7 ever since I got it. When I bought Windows 7, I did so off of the Microsoft store, so I always have the option to go back into my purchase history and download a new .iso of either the 32- or 64-bit release. I did so, and ran Microsoft's USB/DVD tool for Windows 7 to put it on a USB drive (I didn't have any DVD-R's on hand) and it all seemed to work perfectly fine. But when I try to boot from the USB drive, it goes from the "Windows is loading files" screen to the "Starting Windows" screen, then gives me an unexpected error and forces me to reboot. I already tried redownloading the .iso, in case it was a corrupt download.

Windows 7 Home - Upgrading From 32bit To 64bit (Requires Clean Install)

May 11, 2011

I have a computer running a 32 bit oem version of windows 7 home. I really need to change this to a 64 bit version. I do not want to do this illegally. Can I buy this upgrade copy of 7 professional, perform a clean install of windows prof. 64 bit with the upgrade disc, and then use my current oem 32 bit home disc and or license key, to validate that i do in fact have a copy of windows currently.

So technically I wont be "Upgrading" from 32 to 64, I will be re-installing. I have asked several tech savy friends, and while they don't think it cant work, they are unsure. Essentially I am asking if anyone knows what validation windows requires for its upgrade discs. I am given to understand it requires you to put in your original windows disc at some point, and i assume your original key, but will it accept a 32 bit disc/key?

"Windows Easy Transfer Can't Transfer Your Files And Settings" ?

Aug 4, 2012

I saved my files and settings from a previous installation of windows 7 to an external hard drive using windows easy transfer. Now when I try to transfer those files and setting to my new installation I get the following message:

Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer your files and settings.

The message pops up only a few seconds after the transfer begins. Why is this?! I need those files and windows has screwed me.Everything is basically the same as before I reinstalled. Same computer, same windows 7 installation just recovered to factory settings.Same system language as before.BTW I'm on a Toshiba L505 laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium.

I have tried all the usual suspects such as a clean boot and uninstalling my antivirus to rule out third party interference. I have more than enough space on both my computer and on the external hard drive. I have tried only transferring a user account a few MBs large. I have reinstalled the OS twice just in case something went wrong there. I have clicked on the .MIG file directly. All lead to the same error message. The transfer file seems to be intact and not currupt

Is there another software other than WET that can use the same transfer file that WET created to restore my files? Please help me solve this if you can or at least point me in the right direction because right now I'm clueless. I can't emphasize how important those files are to me. I've searched for solutions on several forums and it seems that this is a problem people have been having for years now and windows hasn't provided an answer yet.

An interesting note, When I reboot the laptop after trying to do the transfer, a new user account appears at startup alongside the one I normally use. This new user account has the same unique name of the user account I am trying to restore but that's where the similarity ends. All the settings for this account are default settings and empty folders.

I've downloaded the XP version of Windows Easy Transfer and ran it backing up the files to an external drive but I'm wondering if something went wrong. Looking at the backed up file (on the external drive) it doesn't look like what I've seen in tutorials which shows an icon named Windows Easy Transfer - Items from old computer. The file I get is a file that doesn't know what program created it although the size seems right. I've ran Windows Easy Transfer twice with the same results.

Using Windows Easy Transfer

Jan 12, 2010

Ok so i bought a Belkin Easy Transfer cable to use the Windows Easy Transfer feature, the reason being is that I have several PCs in the house, 2 of them are gaming PCs, the others are HTPCs, I also have a laptop and not to mention my sister & dad uses one too, so I often have to copy files across one another, whether it's a movie, game or whatever. The files i copy and share across the PCs are usually large in size, so the best way i found was to use an external hardrive to copy files to it, and then transfer the files to the PC i want to copy to.But doing this is slow and annoying, and my external hardrive is a piece of crap and often gets corrupted (it's a cheap Seagate brand and unreliable). So I thought, maybe I should buy a cable that lets me connect 2 computers through USB port, and transfer the files that way. So I did, I got the Belkin Easy Transfer Cable yesterday and it works really nicely, transfer speed is fast and no setup is required unless you're using Windows XP, but it's not complicated to setup anyway as it gives you a manual guide with pictures showing you what to do.

Anyway it works fine except that it takes a few minutes to establish connection and scan for the files on the system. Basically, you connect the cable, and you choose the system you want to copy the files "FROM" as 'Old Computer', and you choose the system you want to copy the files "TO", as 'New Computer', and then it'll start scanning for all the files you can copy on from the 'Old Computer' (because you're copying files "FROM" it). The scanning takes quite a bit of time, depending on the size of your hardrive and how many GBs of files you have on it, for me it took about 5 minutes since it was on a laptop with 150GB HDD.So my question is, is there any option to bypass this scanning process?? Because I only want to specify a certain amount of folders to be scanned as those are the folders that I copy files from all the time, there aren't any options on how to change this during the Windows Easy Transfer process. Also, is it possible for me to right click on a file or folder and send to the other PC through Windows Easy Transfer this way, instead of connecting them both and let it scan, and finally be able to select the files i want to copy?

Windows 7 Easy File Transfer?

Jul 10, 2011

I used the Windows 7 Easy Transfer for the first time and much to my surprise it worked without a problem.I previously asked questions of file transfer but after the answers I received I thought there might be a easier way to do this.My situation was migrating files from a laptop HP dv7-1247 x64 to a Netbook Acer 722-BZ197 x64 which both use Windows 7 HP SP1.Inititing the file transfer they utilize the terms from " old computer to new computer on this procedure. There is no mention of Windows 7 and only XP and Vista. Windows 7 was placed on the market 22 months ago but is not included on the instruction. As I proceded with this operation there a three methods available, migrating cable, flash card and network. Since I do not possess the cable nor flash card I selected the network After I intitiated the transfer from my " OLD HP with Windows 7 " it proved me with a code number to be used with the " NEW Acer with Windows 7.Proceeding to tha ACER it asked me for this code which I placed in the box. A new screen appeared but much to my surpise it asked if this transfer is from XP, Vista or Windows 7. I selected the Windows 7 and the complete transfer of my files was accomplished in less then 29 Min.

Disconnected hard drive and plugged into new computer. The C: drive of which has 643 GB of memory. And yet, I got a "There isn't enough disk space available to transfer your files and settings. Free up some disk space and try again," message. No where in the WET setup did I see an option to select a target hard drive. I suspect the program might be trying to transfer the data to the new compters D: drive which only has 12 MB free.
