Using Windows Easy Transfer
Jan 12, 2010
Ok so i bought a Belkin Easy Transfer cable to use the Windows Easy Transfer feature, the reason being is that I have several PCs in the house, 2 of them are gaming PCs, the others are HTPCs, I also have a laptop and not to mention my sister & dad uses one too, so I often have to copy files across one another, whether it's a movie, game or whatever. The files i copy and share across the PCs are usually large in size, so the best way i found was to use an external hardrive to copy files to it, and then transfer the files to the PC i want to copy to.But doing this is slow and annoying, and my external hardrive is a piece of crap and often gets corrupted (it's a cheap Seagate brand and unreliable). So I thought, maybe I should buy a cable that lets me connect 2 computers through USB port, and transfer the files that way. So I did, I got the Belkin Easy Transfer Cable yesterday and it works really nicely, transfer speed is fast and no setup is required unless you're using Windows XP, but it's not complicated to setup anyway as it gives you a manual guide with pictures showing you what to do.
Anyway it works fine except that it takes a few minutes to establish connection and scan for the files on the system. Basically, you connect the cable, and you choose the system you want to copy the files "FROM" as 'Old Computer', and you choose the system you want to copy the files "TO", as 'New Computer', and then it'll start scanning for all the files you can copy on from the 'Old Computer' (because you're copying files "FROM" it). The scanning takes quite a bit of time, depending on the size of your hardrive and how many GBs of files you have on it, for me it took about 5 minutes since it was on a laptop with 150GB HDD.So my question is, is there any option to bypass this scanning process?? Because I only want to specify a certain amount of folders to be scanned as those are the folders that I copy files from all the time, there aren't any options on how to change this during the Windows Easy Transfer process. Also, is it possible for me to right click on a file or folder and send to the other PC through Windows Easy Transfer this way, instead of connecting them both and let it scan, and finally be able to select the files i want to copy?

I saved my files and settings from a previous installation of windows 7 to an external hard drive using windows easy transfer. Now when I try to transfer those files and setting to my new installation I get the following message:
Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer your files and settings.
The message pops up only a few seconds after the transfer begins. Why is this?! I need those files and windows has screwed me.Everything is basically the same as before I reinstalled. Same computer, same windows 7 installation just recovered to factory settings.Same system language as before.BTW I'm on a Toshiba L505 laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium.
I have tried all the usual suspects such as a clean boot and uninstalling my antivirus to rule out third party interference. I have more than enough space on both my computer and on the external hard drive. I have tried only transferring a user account a few MBs large. I have reinstalled the OS twice just in case something went wrong there. I have clicked on the .MIG file directly. All lead to the same error message. The transfer file seems to be intact and not currupt
Is there another software other than WET that can use the same transfer file that WET created to restore my files? Please help me solve this if you can or at least point me in the right direction because right now I'm clueless. I can't emphasize how important those files are to me. I've searched for solutions on several forums and it seems that this is a problem people have been having for years now and windows hasn't provided an answer yet.
An interesting note, When I reboot the laptop after trying to do the transfer, a new user account appears at startup alongside the one I normally use. This new user account has the same unique name of the user account I am trying to restore but that's where the similarity ends. All the settings for this account are default settings and empty folders.

My problem is I don't know if I can merge 2 different pc's into the new laptop using easy file transfer or will it wipe out the first transfer that I have already done? Different users on both old computers.

I'm getting ready to replace my son's hard drive (Dell computer) plus upgrade his OS from XP Pro to Windows 7 Home Premium. I've downloaded the XP version of Windows Easy Transfer and ran it backing up the files to an external drive but I'm wondering if something went wrong. Looking at the backed up file (on the external drive) it doesn't look like what I've seen in tutorials which shows an icon named Windows Easy Transfer - Items from old computer. The file I get is a file that doesn't know what program created it although the size seems right. I've ran Windows Easy Transfer twice with the same results.

I have a new computer (windows 7 64 bit) and my old computer is windows 7 32 bit. I connected both computers via gigbit router. When I load up windows easy transfer program on my old computer it gives me a 6 diget code, then load up my new computer windows easy transfer program and enter the code. They then try to connect but never do. It times out after a few minutes. Any ideas on what to do? They are both connected to the network and both are set up to share files. I can browse the internet with both but I cant connect the easy transfer program..

Great forum you have here. I just recently did a clean install of Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on a computer I use for recording digital audio. For some reason, the Windows Easy Transfer dialog box keeps popping up, even though I'm not doing anything to initiate it. Any ideas as to how I can prevent this or disable it? I did a forum search before posting, and while I found a lot of threads about Windows Easy Transfer, I couldn't find any related to this specific issue. I'll be happy to provide additional details/technical info if requested.

Unless anyone has inside knowledge that ssd prices are going to half in next few months, Crucial M4 64GB at around $100 is just too tempting to ignore.
In my current setup, user profiles are already on a different partition. I'm looking for the best way to migrate as much settings as possible. Among programs I have to reinstall and config are vs2010, sql server 2008, office 2003, quicken, vmware. Glad I made concious decision to use as much portable programs as possible.

I used the Windows 7 Easy Transfer for the first time and much to my surprise it worked without a problem.I previously asked questions of file transfer but after the answers I received I thought there might be a easier way to do this.My situation was migrating files from a laptop HP dv7-1247 x64 to a Netbook Acer 722-BZ197 x64 which both use Windows 7 HP SP1.Inititing the file transfer they utilize the terms from " old computer to new computer on this procedure. There is no mention of Windows 7 and only XP and Vista. Windows 7 was placed on the market 22 months ago but is not included on the instruction. As I proceded with this operation there a three methods available, migrating cable, flash card and network. Since I do not possess the cable nor flash card I selected the network After I intitiated the transfer from my " OLD HP with Windows 7 " it proved me with a code number to be used with the " NEW Acer with Windows 7.Proceeding to tha ACER it asked me for this code which I placed in the box. A new screen appeared but much to my surpise it asked if this transfer is from XP, Vista or Windows 7. I selected the Windows 7 and the complete transfer of my files was accomplished in less then 29 Min.

Following the Windows Easy Transfer directions, I spent 12 hours transfering files from old computer to an external hard drive. Transfered total of 178 GB. Disconnected hard drive and plugged into new computer. The C: drive of which has 643 GB of memory. And yet, I got a "There isn't enough disk space available to transfer your files and settings. Free up some disk space and try again," message. No where in the WET setup did I see an option to select a target hard drive. I suspect the program might be trying to transfer the data to the new compters D: drive which only has 12 MB free.

I recently used Windows Easy Transfer (cable) to transfer all my files from my old XP Pro laptop to my new 64 bit Win 7 laptop. All my music, pictures and docs transferred easily, but for some reason I can't find my old emails or email contacts. They aren't showing up in WLM. I understood these would transfer from Outlook Express to WLM.

I just got a new computer, and was on the process of transferring my files from my old computer using Windows Easy Transfer. It was taking a while so I left it on overnight. When I checked on it again, it had reboot to install windows updates. Now, I've got a folder in my Users section that apparently weights 0 bytes, but that is taking up easily 100 GB, which I also cannot access; for trying to do so leaves me with the same explorer window, and unable to return using the address bar or the back arrow. Is there anything I can do about it?

If I do an Easy Transfer from my existing Window-7 Pro System, which has 10 Users (family members), to a clean install of Windows-7 Pro, will it work? What I am asking is: can Easy Transfer, transfer to the same version of Windows: Windows-7 Pro to Windows-7 Pro? If so, I would be able to eliminate Users and their Files while also eliminating Program Software. The Hardware would be the same System, just a new Hard Drive.

I upgraded my husbands computer from Windows Vista to Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit. Did a full backup under Vista to an external drive, and also used Easy Transfer. Wanted to do a clean install and format the hard drive due to past computer problems. All went fine until I used easy transfer to put the ''old''files back onto the computer after the new Win 7 install. I'm getting a ''protected content migration'' error, asking for a password. My husband did not have a password on the old user account, but just to be sure we have tried every password that we have used. No luck with any of them. How do I know what it is that we no longer have access to? Is there anyway for me to recover access to these files that are supposedly password protected? Should I do anything as drastic as just doing a full restore back to Windows Vista from the backup copy and change anything and then start over?

Can I use more than one dvd when using Easy Transfer? I am planning on doing a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate. I do not have an external hard drive at this time. I tried to use Easy Transfer on my Vista machine (before doing the clean install of windows 7) and the file it makes is bigger than the capacity of my DVD disks. Will it ask for the second disk when I try to put the easy transfer files onto the dvds.

Installed Windows 7 last night on my XP machine. Installation went through fine & is running like a dream. BUT I've got an issue recovering files via Easy Transfer...
Used it in XP to transfer files onto my 4g memory stick - used up about 2.4g. When it came to moving the files back over to Windows 7 via Easy Transfer I get an error message saying "Can't connect to Files".
Is this something to do with drivers?

I have read up on how Windows Easy Transfer works and on the page that gives the options for storing the back up file, you have one option for External drive or USB external drive.
No mention is made of being able to use an already installed 2nd internal data drive. Has anyone been able to successfully use an internal drive with WET?

I am having issuse with an XP-win 7 upgrade.
When I use WET utility it tries to install all my files onto my small C:drive. The original .mig file comes from a computer with C: J: K: drives... the new comp just has C: and D:.
Why isn't it giving me an option to map the drives when I upgrade?
It tries to install on C drive then gives up when it runs out of space.
When I look at the map drive tab in WET it says 'no drives are available for mapping.'

I hope someone can help me. I recently installed Win 7, and I used easy transfer to move from 32 Bit Vista Home Premium to Win 7 64 Bit Home Premium. I did a custom install, but I did not format the partition. Everything worked great - iTunes, Outlook, and all of my pictures and movies came over.
I repeated this same process with the same transfer files on an identical machine and I am getting the following error:
'Windows Easy Transfer couldn't open the file' I'd believe this except that the same file worked 2 hours ago.
Has anyone seen this error? Anyone have any ideas to get all of my files out of this archive?

I was using a 750 gb drive for my Windows XP Professional. No partitions. Call this "Drive C:". This is all still intact.
I decided to upgrade to Win 7. I bought a new one TB drive and made an 80 gb partition for the Win 7 (Pro) OS. Call this "Drive E:".
The remainder of the one TB drive, I made a partition for the program files and data files. Call this "Drive F:".
I tried using Easy Transfer, but it wants to install all my XP files on the small partition, "Drive E."
How do I get Easy Transfer to transfer files to my new "Drive F:"?
