"The Disk Is Offline Because It Has A Signature Collision With Another Disk That Is Online"
Mar 12, 2010
"The disk is offline because it has a signature collision with another disk that is online" Message when original and cloned hard drives are both installed. There is a "simple, way too simple" fix, which makes the inaccessible hd accessible. It obviously changes the signature and OF COURSE MAKES THE HARD DRIVE NO LONGER BOOTABLE. Absolutely negates the idea of cloning a boot drive, required recloning, etc. Live and learn. The cloned drive does not require authorization when booting the original W7 64 bit system. The cloned drive also boots up on a foreign 32 bit computer, complete with all applications. However the W7 OS was not authorized.

I have used a linux live cd to create an exact image copy of a 320gb hdd on an external HDD by doing:
root@ubuntu:/media/backup# dd if=/dev/sda of=2011-09-19.img bs=32256
9922896+0 records in
9922896+0 records out
320072933376 bytes (320 GB) copied, 8851.48 s, 36.2 MB/s
Windows 7 ultimate is installed on that HDD. I just want this image so if the hdd fails i can buy a new hdd and restore the image to the new hdd. However is there some disk signature problem if i do this? Because the new hdd would have a different disk signature from the one of the old hdd. I have read that this can cause an error message during boot along the lines of 'The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.'. Do i have to manually edit the MBR using a hex editor to match the new hdd? How do i even find the correct signature of the new hdd?

Today I was trying to create a VirtualBox VM that had direct access to a partition which is the only one on its disk. This partition contains non-OS-specific data (including documents and music). The guest OS is Xubuntu and the host OS is Windows 7.I succeeded in making the disk image for this configuration, only when I tried to write to it from Xubuntu it didn't save the changes (I couldn't see the changes in Windows 7 when I checked out that same partition). I investigated the problem and I found a solution on the internet: I needed to take the disk with the partition on it offline and then clear the "read only" attribute. The solution involved using the DiskPart utility to perform those steps. I tried to take the disk offline (with Administrator access), but DiskPart gave the following error: "Disk attributes may not be changed on the current system disk or BIOS disk 0." This is strange since that disk isn't actually a system partition: it boots from C: which is where Windows itself is installed.I ran Disk Manager, and it looked like this:So it appears a tiny 100MB partition has been added to my second disk, which is the disk containing E: which I want to be able to access from within the VirtualBox VM.So, I have the following questions: Is that 100MB partition the reason it won't work? If so, do I need this partition? If so, is there a way to move it to my first disk without breaking my Windows installation?

I needed to copy files between two PCs and didn't have a USB big enough so I took the HDD out of my Dell Vista laptop and used it as an external drive to transfer the files I needed moving. When I connected it up to the destination PC running windows 7, the drive couldn't be seen in explorer. I had to bring the drive online in Disk Management in order to be able to explore the drive and take the files I needed off of it. All was OK until I put the drive back in the Vista laptop and then found that the drive wouldn't boot. All I get is a blinking cursor after the initial Dell logo screen. like as if the BIOS can't load the drive or something. Can someone please tell me what bringing a drive online in Disk Management does to the MBR of that drive?

I currently use Vista Home Premium on my HP DV7-1247 x64 laptop. I purchased & await my Oct 22 delivery of the X64 upgrade to Windows 7 from Microsoft. I have never accomplished a new upgrade so my question is, is it better to upgrade on-line or off-line.

The problem that I am having all started after I updated my Windows XP OS to Windows 7. When I start my computer up software is meant to start up a NAS drive that is on the network. This works fine but this software only starts the NAS drive after the computer is started and Windows 7 places it has offline. When the drive finishes startup should it not also display in Windows 7 that it is now online? This is what happened on my previous XP OS and it also works with another 2 machines that I have attached to the network which are XP and Windows Vista. how do you get Windows 7 to automatically check to see if the NAS drive is online or offline?

After I got my new laptop, I installed antivirus, windows updates, etc, removed bloatware and installed the software that I actually use. Then I created my System Repair disk (single disk). Does this disk include all software and windows updates that were on my computer at the time I created the disk? I have read that System Repair disks will only have the factory settings of Windows 7, but I don't know if this is the case for all System Repair disks or only those that came with the computer and were made before the computer was purchased?I've also read that a System Repair disk could include a system image. Is this true and done by default when the System Repair disk is created?

I've been having this error even after reformatting and reinstalling Windows 7 on my desktop. I've done reformatting / reinstalling Windows 7 several times, yet the problem still occurs. I'm thinking of my HDD as being corrupted or messed up. The problem occurred after I accidentally hit the CPU when I was stretching my foot. The screen froze after that. Upon rebooting it, 'Disk boot failure, Insert system disk and press enter' occurs. After I entered the DVD installer of Windows 7, the screen just hangs.

I have been having a bit of trouble with windows 7 lately, namely that it won't start up right. When I boot from the drive normally, it gives me the classic "BOOT DISK ERROR: INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" message.
However, I soon discovered that if I boot from the Windows 7 cd and do not boot from it (By ignoring the "Press a key to boot from CD or DVD..." Windows 7 boots up fine.
I've tweaked my BIOS over and over, but the same problem persists. The drive is brand new and fine. What can I do?

trying to install Windows 7 on sony laptop with a copy that is different from the original copy of Windows 7.did partdisk, clean all, create partition, and dvd install gave the "can't install to disk, turn on disk controller in BIOS" error. there is no disk controller function in my BIOS.if partdisk clean all was successful, does that mean the HDD and its controller board are ok, that is, not physically damaged, and the problem is with software/installation/setup etc.?what should i do next, in order to have a successful install?

I am eligible for the $14.99 USD upgrade to Windows 8.Will there be an installation disk for Windows 8 available at this price and if not, then how much more will it cost?If not, then how should I ensure that I can easily install Windows 8 after a hard disk crash? One of the hard disks suddenly failed to initialized. The first problem I found on this disk was unable to open one of the zip files then the machine crashed. After I restarted the machine the HDD drive was missing from the Computer. My computer has 6 hard drives including the missing one. One is Corsair SSD for the OS and the rest are Samsung, Hitachi and WD all of them are 1TB. When I checked on the Device Manager the Drive is there and the device status is properly working. I checked on the Disk Management and I got a message to Initialize the Disk then I followed the instruction. Again I got an error message " Virtual Disk Manager - The system cannot find the file specified." On the Disk Management windows the status of the Disk is "Unknown 931.51GB Not Initialized- Unallocated". I tried to initialize but the same error I got. I did not name this drive but it named automatically RV 01 and the Location is 0.I use Acronis Disk Director to fix the problem but it cannot change the status to online. What I did last week was I installed some programs to the Drive X instead of Drive C.My computer OS is Windows 7 64bits all the drivers and software are updated.
