I'm about to upgrade my computer to an i7 system. Should I do another clean install of Windows 7 after the upgrade, or will Windows 7 do well at adapting to the new hardware?

System Refuses To Boot After Memory Upgrade

May 4, 2012

I've just tried to upgrade my PC's memory from 8GB to 16GB and have hit a rather worrying problem in that the PC now refuses to boot. Initially, once I'd replaced the old memory modules with the new ones, I got three beeps on power-up, which I quickly established was the result of my not properly seating the modules. Once I'd made sure they were firmly inserted I tried again, and this time all I get is the computer powering up - so all the lights come on and the fans kick into life - but then it powers down again without even attempting to boot: I don't even get to the BIOS. After a few tries I decided that it might be an issue with one or more of the new modules, so I swapped them back to the original 8GB kit and I still get the same problem. My PC is essentially DOA. Whilst I was inserting/re-inserting modules I did try to avoid and issues with static discharge. I wonder if perhaps I've disturbed a connector somewhere, although I couldn't see any signs of this when I re-opened the case to check.

The new modules are a 16GB Corsair Vengence DDR3 dual-channel 4-module kit (4x4GB). They were replacing a 4 module 8GB DDR3 dual-channel kit (4x2GB), so in both cases all four slots were in use. Motherboard is an Intel DP55WG, which is listed by Corsair as being compatable (16GB is the max for this motherboard). I've been running this system for two years prior to my upgrade attempt this evening, and it's been rock solid with no issues.

Maybe I should reset the CMOS for instance? Note that I'm not a hardware guy, and messing around inside the case isn't something I normally even consider trying... But I thought that this would be a very simple, trouble-free upgrade!

Putting Win 7 Upgrade Version On New System Build

Nov 22, 2009

I just got my computer up and running today. My next step is to install win 7 on it. So i got win 7 pro 64 bit through digital river with a sweet student discount and also a back up disc that came in the mail. I have noticed that it says upgrade on it though. I have been hearing and being told so many different things that i can not tell what is true.

Please only post an answer if you are certain it is correct

Thank you and with that being said here are my questions

Questions:

Could someone please explain to me what i am exactly supposed to do with the backup disc?
Can i use this on a new computer, ie one without any os on it already?

A friend referred me to this site. It sounds very confusing and i am not very tech savvy when it comes to things like this. Will i need to install it onto a different computer in order to do this boot-able upgrade? does the back up disc come into play? Could someone please explain the instructions in a very simplistic way.

Any other ideas or solutions to getting win7 upgrade version onto a new system build?

System Shows 64 Bit On Windows 7 Pro And 32 Bit On Vista After Upgrade

Jan 22, 2012

I had windows vista 32 bit earlier. Then I got windows 7 professional upgrade in trial period. I didn't notice how it happened. Of course it must be my mistake. Now when i boot from windows 7 it shows 64 bit and in vista it shows 32 bit. The system asks before booting which one to choose. It's today only that I have installed but I am not facing any problem as such except that i need a product key within 30 days. Should i leave as it is or uninstall vista somehow. Would i be able to reboot my system using the 32 bit vista CD?

Windows Fails To Load After System Upgrade?

Dec 4, 2012

Old office computer:

Dell E510
P4 3.4 GHz
4 GB RAM
Radeon x800 PCIE
Crucial M4 SSD 120 GB
Windows 7 x64

New internals:

CPU: AMD A4 5300
Mainboard: MSI FM2-A75MA-E35 FM2
8 GB RAM
Corsair 450 watt PSU
Cheap Cooler Master Case

After assembling the new computer, I ran it without the system disk installed to make sure everything was kosher, and memory timings, etc. were correct. After verifying that, I shut it down and put the SSD into the new unit and booted it up. The system posts fine, but once the Win 7 startup image shows, the system restarts and brings me to the "start windows in safe mode/start windows normally" prompt.

Install P2P Driver And Do Upgrade - System Cannot Be Repaired Automatically

Nov 26, 2012

I recently bought a dell latitude E6410 laptop running windows 7 ultimate. A few days ago it started playing up, at first I thought I had a virus of some sort as my protection had run out, so I downloaded another protection plan and ran a test which came back clean. Then a message came up up from windows saying that I needed to install a "P2P driver" and do a upgrade. So I downloaded the driver and did the upgrade which seemed to work. The next day I started up and it went straight to the start up repair, which came back saying my system cant be repaired automatically. I can get as far as the system recovery options. I tried a "system restore" and that didn't work, and a "windows memory diagnostic" and still nothing. I haven't done a back up disc or have any other discs so I'm pretty much stuck in a loop now. I've been looking into the "system image recovery" but have no idea what that means or what to do.

Windows Explorer Crashes And System Freezing After Video Card Upgrade?

May 24, 2011

I very recently graduated and as a congratulations, my brother-in-law gave me a brand new Nvidia 9800GTX for my computer. I was running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit when I installed it and I immediately saw a drastic increase in performance. However, when I turned my computer off for the night, I noticed that it would hang at the shut down screen and never actually turn off.Refusing to believe that the new card was at fault, and having next to nothing on my C partition after my most recent formatting, I decided to go ahead and reinstall Windows to hopefully fix the issue. This is where my other problems started in. Suddenly Windows Explorer was crashing whenever I tried to use my disk drive and my system would randomly lock up. After assuming my install went wrong, I tried reinstalling twice more and neither worked. Finally, I got fed up and reinstalled my 32-bit copy of Windows 7 Professional and it still didn't work. As of now I've removed the new card and put my old 9500GT back in to find that I'm not having a single problem with the 9500.

System Goes To Black Screen Before Login/welcome Screen After Windows 7 32-bit Upgrade?

Sep 2, 2012

My son has a Toshiba Satelite P205 that he just upgraded from Windows XP Home Premium to Windows 7 32-bit. After the upgrade completed the computer booted fine. The within 20 minutes he got the BSOD and the system rebooted. Now he can't get Windows to fully start. We've tried all of the options from F8 with no success. We have the Toshiba System Recovery Disk but it won't launch. (The Boot sequence has been changed to boot from CD/DVD and then the Hard Drive.)The Memory Diagnostic from the Windows 7 disk ran fine with no errors. I'm thinking I might need to re-format/wipe the drive to start fresh but don't know where to obtain a boot CD(no floppy drive on this laptop). Does anyone recommend a software that I can purchase to clear everything without destroying the CD/DVD accessibility so I can then use the System Recovery Disk to put it back to the original factory Settings?

Continue The Upgrade / Merging Upgrade Process

Nov 30, 2009

Customer dropped off a laptop telling me that his Windows upgrade had failed.

It's a new HP DV6 that had Vista pre-installed on it.

I've taken a look at it, and there's a "Windows.old" folder on the root of C:, which is of course a back up of all his data.

There's also a batch file inside the folder with the following inside of it:

"REM Dummy file for NTVDM"

I'm wondering if there's a way to "continue" the upgrade / merging process? He has asked me to re-install all of his software the way he had it. So i'm hoping there's an easier way to continue where he left off.

I know Windows 7 creates a "Windows.old" folder when upgrading from XP. Not sure why one was created for a Vista to Windows 7 upgrade though.

Revoting Previous Upgrade To Upgrade To Windows 7?

Dec 24, 2012

I have a pc with Windows XP pro 32bit retail version. First I have made an image, just in case. Then I have upgraded it to windows 8, 64bit by using the retail upgrade DVD and clean install. However, I found out that my motherboard is so old (5 years old) that there are no drivers for win8 and after asking ASUS they said that the motherboard is not supported any more and that there will be no new drivers for it. I tried using win7 drivers but it did not work and without correct drivers a lot of things does not work (in particularly hdmi port). What I want to do now is to revert to my image (windows xp), buy a Windows 7, 64bit upgrade retail DVD and upgrade windows xp to windows 7 for which there are drivers for my motherboard.

1) Can I use windows xp retail (whose product key has already been used to upgrade to win8) image to upgrade to windows 7 retail? will the activation of windows 7 succeed? I want to use clean install again since i upgrade from 32bit to 64bit

2) If the answer to question 1 is a yes, how does microsoft prevent users from using the same windows image file to upgrade different pc's? I mean, theoretically, I can make an image of pc1, copy it to a hard drive of pc2 (even if it will result in erroneous installation due to different specs) and upgrade both systems by using two VUP product keys which are cheaper than one VUP + one retail product keys

3) Can I use windows 8 upgrade DVD which is not used any more to upgrade another PC?

Windows 7 Won't Boot - No Operating System Listed / System Partition Not Valid

Oct 19, 2011

Suddenly my Win 7 Home Premium x64 will not boot. The system starts, POSTs then loads the DVD driver, then the screen goes black (not blank but "lit up" black if that makes sense). Then nothing. If I use Hiren's boot cd I can boot up using the "boot from HDD" option fine and Windows operates normally. System restore to a previous configuration made no difference to the original problem. I cannot boot into Safe Mode. F8 just offers me boot order options.

- Running the Windows 7 DVD I find: "No operating system is listed on the Repair Windows option."
- Running Startup Repair finds the following error: "the partition table does not have a valid system partition" which it claims to have repaired, but the error remains and Windows will still not boot.

I followed this advice:
Boot 7 dvd to system recovery options command prompt. Type: Diskpart
list vol (find the vol letter e.g C or partition number e.g. 1 for the system partition )
Sel vol C ( or sel vol 1, obviously use the correct letter or number)
act exi

My system partition was easily identified and listed as healthy so I selected it and made it active. The problem still remains exactly the same. My system is self built just over a year ago, to my knowledge has been running fine, without any hardware issues. I'm prepared to do a clean install if that's what it takes but if there is a way to fix the partition problem without that I'd like to explore it first.
