View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm working on a computer and currently removing some viruses. I noticed a couple things,1) Trying to save to certain locations will come up with a permissions denied error. I tried to unzip a file to the desktop and got a permissions denied error.2) Typing commands in the start menu goes to search results instead of straight to that item. For example, typing "control" should bring up the control panel but it goes to search instead. Same with msconfig, appwiz.cpl, etc,
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have tried and set the menu properties back to the default settings and it still doesnt work. I've looked up if there could be another problem and found out it may be a problem with the registry, however i can't get into the start menu and run the elevated command prompt so i can check it and make sure.

View 1 Replies View RelatedYesterday my girlfriend asked me to look at her computer because her start button wasn't working and when I checked it, I confirmed this to be true. Neither the orb, nor the windows key activates the start menu. When I click it, the highlight flashes on it for a second but then nothing actually launches.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI currently have an issue with my PC where all the text under desktop icons and dialogue boxes is missing, and instead there is a mumbo jumbo of lines and misshapen boxes in control panel, so its impossible for me to try and do anything. I tried doing /sfc scannow in a cmd prompt, but it told me I do not have administrative privileges when I was logged in on my admin account. This happened after I had to boot into safe mode when some windows updates were installed previously. After they were removed, the BSOD remained, but I managed to log on by using 'Boot using last known good configuration'. I have also tried using a system restore point to before the updates were installed but to no avail. Start up repair also drew a blank and I can't think of anything else to do.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI shut down my computer by pressing the power button, the next day when I turned my computer (toshiba, windows 7) it said loading files and then went to start up repair, after a short while start repair said it couldn't fix the problem automatically, it said to click finish which would restart my computer, I've restarted my computer multiple times but it always comes up with the same thing.
I clicked on advanced options for system recovery and support and it comes up with language and key board inout which is all right, click next and it says to access recovery options, log on as a local user, to access the command prompt as well, log on using an administrator account, I've tried my computer account password using the administrator option but it doesn't work, the other options are ASPNET and SophosSAUNB-(my last name goes here). I've tried each option with my password and it doesn't work, am i supposed to use a special password? I don't know what to do.
I'm still new to 7, but for some reason when I want to type a program name in Start Menu doesn't seem to work or doesn't find the program.
Is this something to do with searching preferences?
On windows 7 64 bit the start button(orb) does not load Right click does? I have scanned for viruses and restarted in last good configuration When I reboot I get one go at the start button and it works but never again I use a Toshiba Qosmio laptop.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI changed my Windows start sound a while back. After updates some time ago, it changed back to the original.I decided to change it back the way I wanted it and opened up the imageres.dll file in the Windows System32 folder using Resource Hacker.I found that the Imageres file still pointed to my sound file and when I hit play it, it played my sound. But my computer plays the default sound when it boots.I ran a search and found another Imageres file at this location...C:Windowswinsxsx86_microsoftwindowsimageres_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_dc93f95659399ba8imageres.dllThis file plays the original Windows sound but will not let me change it even with Resource Hacker.I go through the process on a copy of the file pasted on my desktop, but while I don't get any error messages, it still plays the original sound after completing the process.
View 9 Replies View RelatedJust recently I have found that typing a program name into the start menu no longer returns the programs that match. I tried to install a hotfix which didn't work (update not applicable to my computer). I've seen other posts about deleting a registry key, but I don't have that registry key in the first place. I've also rebuilt the search index with no success
View 3 Replies View RelatedIts been happening ever since I installed Windows 7.
For example, When I click Start, type "CC" in the search box, the Start menu displays what I intend to start (CCleaner) but when I press enter I get this:
Its acting completely wierd!
On top of that, when I right click the entry, I get a menu which is expanded towards the left awkwardly.
I also recall that I have unchecked "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties." in the properties of my Windows 7 boot drive.
And since the programs are installed there, I think the problem might be related.
I have checked it again but it dosen't have any effect!
So for a while, windows updates have been causing BSODs on my PC, usually I just go and remove them via safe mode and all is well again. Well last night, after doing that, my PC BSOD'd and on rebooting found that several things were bad. First, the start orb didn't work and I couldn't pull up the start menu. All the text is gone from my desktop icons, the date and time is missing, all the items within control panel and My computer are a jumbled mess of random lines and boxes, so that means I cannot do anything in Windows explorer or control panel. This happens even within safe mode. So far, I have tried doing a system restore, sfc /scannow, startup repair and rebooting in last known good configuration. Nothing I've tried has been successful in solving this issue. About the only thing I can do on my computer is use the web browser and type blindly in the address bar, since all the text is also gone from the top of tabs and the address bar
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently got a new power supply and video card for my computer. It has been working great but on accident one day I broke the plastic divider inside one of my usb ports so that one no longer worked and now my other usb port is not working. It will not recognize anything plugged into it and my phone can't even charge through it. It did the same thing a few days ago but it randomly started working again but now it isn't and I don't know how to get it back or make it stop. The usb ports on the back of the pc are still working though, my keyboard and mouse are plugged in through it and haven't stopped working once.

Log files show below that 4 things failed to load. Tuesday couldn't boot up PC again.. tried to restart like 4-5 times.. Finally comes up and in the logs there's numerous things that failed to load. Running a sfc /scannow right now.
I found corrupted system files, but it appears that the hard disk is fine. executed chkdsk and no bad sectors.Just looked into this on event viewer-The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:xsoaynmfmfxpefxbozedltnzvijcvI am running Acer Aspire X3950-U3022 with Windows 7 Home Premium Home Edition.

cmdGuard
cmdHlp
CSC

discache
ElbyCDIO

I realized some of these are not Windows 7 related but most are. While the computer "works", I do experience frequent reboots and freezes. Perhaps some of these driver loading failures are part of the cause of my issues.
When i got home today didn't my computer work, my girlfriend has been the last one using it. So don't know how things were just before the shutdown or anything.when i turn on the computer i get to the screen where "touch bios" is and where i can see the options like Bios settings, boot menu, xpress recovery.but i cant press anything, and after about two seconds on that screen the PC shuts down again. The keyword lights up so there is a responds on it, but just doesn't work to press anything before it shuts down.I've got BSOD upto several times a day for a few months time.believe that my computer is affected by some virus or something is delaying my computer. might be an combination of several things.I got no external things hugged up to the stationeer computer right now.it is a windows 7 x64 machine.
usually when i get issues i can access advanced boot up or bios, but can neither in this case..I wonder if it might be a hardware issue.
When I start up my computer, my Steam starts up, then I manually start Chrome. Chrome comes up fine, Steam does too, but when I try to right click on Steam and click friends, all it does is create another steam process running at 100-108 K. Then if I close Chrome and try to reopen it, it will do the same. This happens with EVERY program after I start up. There's a 5 second window where I can open programs without issue, then after that it will only start 108 K copies of them. It takes me around 30 restarts just to get it working properly, if not more.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a video card that used to boot up in windows 7 - but know this computer with a GeForce 9500GT video card boots up with the Vista boot up logo.I found out this was the video card because I have another card with another GeForce video.I took the swapped the video cards, and the indication changed. The original computer booted with the windows start up screen. And the test computer booted up with the vista boot up screen.
I was told by a local computer repair facility this had something to do with video drivers.I tried what the organization suggested and uninstalled all video drivers (I used generic Windows 7 Video Drivers). Then the organization recommended downloading the latest video drivers for the GeForce 9500GT.This video card has 512GBytes of memory. I did this. Then I was told to install the newly downloaded video drivers.I resrted the computer with the Vista login screen with windows 7 operating system, and the vista login screen was displayed.
Last night I was on my computer and then I shut it down. Today when I came home from work it keeps saying windows failed to start. I tried hitting f8 and loading to the last good configuration doesn't work, safe mode same thing, repairing nothing, so my last resort was my windows 7 cd. So I went into bios and made my configuration boot from cd/dvd popped it in and restarted, a black screen came up saying windows is loading files, then the windows 7 menu came up, picked my language, next, and first I tried repair my computer, I get the little circle meaning its loading for like 5 seconds them it does nothing, rebooted again but this time I chose, install and I've been on the setup is starting for like 20 min. And forgot to mention, when it boots seem like it does good then comes to the screen where it says windows failed and gives me two options repair our start normal, if I pick repair it just reboots and start normal takes me to like the pick your user screen but its just blank no users, so I can't even restore our access the computer.
