Split Audio Streams On 2 Outputs (Standard/HDMI)?
Aug 31, 2010
I have a Radeon HD5850 with a HDMI output that is plugged on my HDTV, I am using Win 7 and the last Catalyst drivers. The video is working just fine (extended desktop, I can play a movie on the TV while playing a game on my monitor on the other desktop) but I have a problem separating the audio streams. Is there a way (built in windows, ati driver or external program...) to send the audio stream of some applications (the movie basically) on the HDMI output, and the streams of other applications on my regular audio output at the same time?Usually on Win7 when you have 2 sound cards you can just set one as default, launch your program, then set the other one as default and launch the other programs and that will do the trick (the streams stay on the output that was the "default output" when they were launched). But with the HDMI of the Radeon, when I switch the default adapter, all the sound is switched..

splitting audio to two separate output devices in windows 7 x64.I'm preparing my primary PC to act as a Media center. Ideally I'd like for someone to be able to watch netflix, or online videos on the TV with audio and video running through the HDMI cable while someone else can use the PC monitor & desktop speakers to game or do other tasks. The issue is both gaming applications and chrome (or other web browsers) only support audio playing through the default audio device in windows 7. As a result, i'm forced to pick whether i want all audio to play from the TV speakers or the desktop speakers.
Summary of Specs:
Asus M2N-Sli Deluxe mobo - rear port used for desktop speakers
Radeon HD 6870 - HDMI for TV sound
Athlon 64 x2 6000+
4 gigs ram
Doing some research I've learned this was a feature in win XP but was dropped in vista/7. On windows 7 support forums the Microsoft Support reply that it was an intentional omission win both windows 7 and vista.I know how to direct the audio from winamp, media player classic, and WMP to the output device of my choosing.I have tried three third party applications:Virtual Audio Cable: lets me play the same audio out both the HDMI connection and the desktop speakers.IndieVolume: shows promise as it lets me direct audio from applications to the output device i choose, but all attempts to get the software to change my web browser's output device haven't worked. I also think the software is not supported for windows 7 x64.J River - Media Center 17: media center software with an embedded web browser. Using this media center i can direct the audio from any media on my computer to the audio device of my choosing, but the embedded web browser plays out of windows default output device not the audio device i choose.

I've installed shark007 codec pack, now wmp plays everything, but when I try to play avi file with more than 1 audio stream, all of them bigin to play simultaneously, creating a huge mess. Am I able to choose just 1 stream in WMP as I can in media player classic, etc.?

My computer is in one room and TV is in another. I use the stereo plug to power the small satellite speakers at the computer and the HDMI cable from the mother board to drive the TV in the adjoining room. I would like to have sound in both rooms, but WMC seems to restrict one to either/or.

I tried looking for an answer to this in the forums and on Google first, but I couldn't find anything for my issue. I have a set of computer speakers that I like to listen to music through, and a USB headset that I like to listen to games and movie through. I switch back and forth pretty often, but every time I do, I have to log out and log back in for the newly plugged-in device to actually make sound. Is there any way to set up Win7 to play audio to both devices so that I can just turn off my speakers when not in use?

I have my monitor (vga) and my tv (hdmi) hooked up to my desktop computer. When I listen to music I have it open on my monitor and the sound comes through the bookshelf speakers I have connected via the audio jack. However when I want to watch a video, I watch on the TV and I want the sound to be coming from the tv. Currently I go into the volume settings and change the default playback device. Is there anyway to do this automatically?

I'm trying to hook up my TV with my computer, and for the most part it's working. The video goes through and I get how to control it and everything. The only thing not working is the sound.
I'm using an HDMI to HDMI cable, and like I said the video is fine. Also, when the cable is plugged into my boyfriend's laptop, the sound comes out of the TV.
So this must mean the problem is with my computer specifically. Although, this computer is only a month old, so I wouldn't think anything is out of date.

the newer smart phones have nice powerful processors in them so I was wondering if the DAC (Digital / Analog converters) in these are as good as the ones in a typical LAPTOP computer set up -- bog standard on board sound from a laptop computer -- not high end specialized studio stuff etc.My Galaxy III S phone can play FLAC files and plugging the output into a DECENT set of speakers appears to me to be just as good if not better than the same sound played from the computer - a relatively decent laptop computer (Sony VAIO VPCEH with Intel I5 processor). I tested this by connecting the phone DIRECTLY to the pre-amp with the music on the phone's micro sdhc card. Had I done it via the USB then that might have needed another DAC conversion so the test cases wouldn't have been the same.I use a phone app WINAMP PRO (just like the PC version) so I can use Folders / directories to play the music and it can play FLAC too -- a lot of music phone apps lack this facility which is a shame. I like also the "play by folders" too -- as I have a lot of Audio books -- saves endless tagging and creating playlists / albums. --Just point winamp to the directory / or file and play it.I find also streaming music from the phone to the receiver device seems to work better than messing around with pc software too -- especially on a laptop.Another app here -- OrangeSqueeze in conjunction with SQUEEZEPLAYER -does the job of the logitech squeeze server on the laptop. The phone will stream music from a Network (or any acessible drive) to the player device(s) -- no prob but use the Wifi on the phone --not the DATA content from the phone company !! otherwise your Bank balance will diminish faster than Spain's Economy.
I used to be very sceptical of smartphones --even have some posts on the forum saying I'd never buy them -- however I have to eat my own words -- the latest crop with the latest Android version are incredibly useful now and possibilities seem quite exciting with what you can do with them.Seems to me that we don't need to do much Multi-media streaming from Windows 7 in the future as your phone will handle it. Perhaps Ms is getting this right by gradually withdrawing a lot of multimedia in the standard version of W8.

All of my audio files from ripped CDs in my Music Library seem to be in two folders for each artist or CD(ex. Adele and Adele-copy). Each folder contains part of the whole CD(tracks1,3,5... and 2,4,6 etc.) with some overlap. This makes for complicated and difficult music management and transfer having 45 gigs of music files. I usually use the Zune software for ripping CDs and playing on Zune player. Now I want to transfer music to my phone, and I have twice as many folders as I should.

I have a HTPC setup. PC includes an ASUS MB with on-board video and audio, including options for either separated analog 7.1 audio out or HDMI out (among other output options). Current setup routes Audio and Video via HDMI to Pioneer VSX-1020 A/V receiver, and routes video from there to HDTV via another HDMI cable. OS is Win7 Ultimate x64, w/SP1.
Exact model for mb is here: ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 AM3
When I play audio files, the receiver can fake the signal into all 5 channels (I don't have a sub, so the .1 is not relevant here), so there's no issue of the receiver not accessing the available speakers.
The main issue is this: When I look into the Sound Control Panel, under Playback Devices, the active/default device is ATI HDMI Output. Also listed are Speakers (not plugged in), Realtek Digital Output and Realtek Digitial Output (Optical). I do not have any analog cables plugged in, nor do I have an S/PDIF (optical/coax) connected. The HDMI works, but only gives me the option of Stereo (2ch). When I go to the Configure screen for the ATI HDMI Output, I see a list of Audio Channels, but that list ONLY contains Stereo.

I am trying to get audio from my PC via HDMI into my Marantz NR1402 AV Amp and then into my panasonic plasma.the plasma is picking up the desktop (so the signal is going thru the amp ok but the amp is not receiving any sound. In the Nvidea Control panel Set up Digital Audio it recognises The marantz under HDMI but in the configure section "open windows sound setting" it only shows speakers (not plugged in) & Digital Audio (S/pdif) Default device (i am showing hidden & disconnected devices).I have opened the pc case and noticed that I have a two pin cable from the 9500gt going to the Spdif on motherboard & a cable running from the soundcard to the front sockets on the pc case.

I installed Windows 7 yesterday and at first I had no audio to my TV via the HDMI cable. I adjusted the settings via the sound icon on the taskbar, playback tab, changing whether the speakers or the Digital Output Device (HDMI), Sigmatel High Definition Audio Codec was the default. Eventually I got it to work.
Today, however it has stopped working again and no matter what changes I make, nothing works. When I right click on the playback device Digital Output Device (HDMI) and choose TEST, I get the message: Failed to play test tone. All sound comes through the laptop speakers.
I went to device manager and checked the driver for the codec and it was up to date.
When I was using Vista, to get the audio all I had to do was plug in the HDMI cable and the sound automatically went through the TV.
Does anyone have any ideas how to solve this?

I've been keeping an eye on these forums; I find that it provides the most succinct information regarding Windows 7.
I finally bit the bullet and made myself a HTPC running Win 7 RC 64-bit. The whole purpose was to play ripped DVDs (to VOBs) from my NAS, any downloaded shows (as AVI's) from my NAS, and hopefully BluRays via the BD-ROM (I have a PS3, so this was not the main reason).
It seems that I was able to get the first two objectives working without any work. All I had to do was install the latest Catalyst drivers.
However, I can't seem to get Cyberlink PowerDVD 9 Ultra (or Windows Media Center) to play BluRays with anything more than 'stereo.' I've tried to research the topic, but there's just too many acronyms flying around (PAP, AAC, AC3, etc) that reading forums is like greek!
From my understanding, I know I can't get the DD TrueHD (or DTS-MA) to work via HDMI. However, I THOUGHT I could at least have PowerDVD "convert" (is the proper word downsample?) the DD TrueHD to a 5.1 Multichannel audio.
Am I completely wrong? Is what I want even possible?

I have an Asus x83v laptop and recently upgraded from vista to 7. On vista when I plugged in the hdmi cable the audio and video would automatically go through the tv and back through the pc when unplugged (video would be displayed on both when plugged in). Now since I installed windows 7 only the video goes through automatically and the audio stays on the pc speakers unless i manually change the tv speakers to default in the control panel. How do I set it up to change automatically like it did in vista?

I recently connected my HDMI output from my LCD to my PC.I have Nvidia GTS 250. I looked around for some tutorials and solutions to my problem but non of them seem to work since they all say the same thing: set the HDMI as default in my audio settings. I tried but i couldn't do it because it wont let me. I open up Control Panel> Sound and I can't seem to find anything but my SPDIF. When I click on it, the "Set as default" button is not availble. I can't press it. when I right click on it.I had Nvidia Geforce 8400GS.Nothing. Then I updated to the latest drivers. NOTHING!So I installed my old GPU, Nvidia GTS 250 and also installed the latest drivers form their website and still nothing!I tried to remove and reinstall Realtek HD audio drivers and still nothing. When I right click my SPDIF option I see "test sound" and when I click it I can see the green audio thing goes up at the system tray.

The problem: Sound is working fine through my laptop speakers but when I connect it to the TV via HDMI cable the sound still comes through the laptop.
I was previously running Windows Vista Home Premium and it worked absolutely fine. As in, the sound came out of the television speakers when I connected the notebook to the TV. I recently upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium and since then it does not work. I would appreciate if anyone could help me.
Right now the default sound output device is: Speakers/Headphones - SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC. The other two listed are Realtek Digital Output (Optical) - Realtek High Definition Audio and Digital Output Device (HDMI) - SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC.
When I try either of the other two sound does not work at all. With the Realtek one it seems to recognize the sound but I don't hear it anywhere and with the HDMI one, it doesn't work at all i.e. Fails to play test tone. I have installed all the latest drivers according to manufacturers.

I have a Sony VAIO VGN-AR390E laptop. It has a SigmaTel High Definition Audio device and an Nvidia 7600 GT. My HDMI audio doesn't work and I have tried for hours today to get it working again. It previously worked just fine in Windows Vista. I am connecting it to an Integra 7.8 receiver which has video pass through via HDMI to my Mitsubishi WD-73737 monitor. I have tried connecting straight through to my TV with no luck in the audio department, and also to someone else's TV with no luck in the audio department. However, a different laptop's HDMI audio worked just fine. The image is displayed correctly though.
Today I tried uninstalling my current nvidia drivers (195.62) from laptopvideo2go and installing 2 different sets of video drivers provided by Sony for my laptop that are a bit dated now. No luck. I uninstalled and re-installed the current audio drivers by Sony. No luck. I also tried the previous version of the audio drivers without joy too. I also installed the Intel chipset drivers too without luck. When I go to the control panel and click sound and properties, I am setting the HDMI/SPDIF output to default and disabling the speakers/headphones option.
The speaker icon in the taskbar shows the sound levels going up and down while playing material back- but I can never hear anything. I've tried the 44khz, 48 and 96 options, and Dolby Digital, DTS checked and unchecked and nothing makes a difference when I'm trying to test them. Everything used to work with my receiver except for the WMA Pro option. Now my receiver just says "No Audio Stream Detected" while I'm trying everything.
I did have the K-Lite Codec package installed but since deleted it. I also tried messing with the AC3 Filter- and also deleted. No luck there either. I've tried powering down and resetting all of my equipment many times. I'm out of options- any suggestions are very welcome!

With Windows XP SP3 I was able to transmit audio which was digital and sometimes multi-channel to my Denon reciever through the HDMI output on my motherboard; I was also able to simultaneoulsy display my computer through that same HDMI connection through my Denon reciever and on to my my Toshibe LCD TV.But when I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit the HDMI audio was very limited (only 16 bit 2-channel @ 48,000 Hz) and can only select it when the reciever is on (which makes sense, but it's anoying to have to go into sound properties and switch to HDMI if I started the computer before the reciever, I hate technology trying to pretend it knows what I want it to do, it should just be able to do what it's told.) Then, when I turn on the TV this message comes up (which I would see when I was using XP but it didn't change anything)An HDMI-to-DVI display connection has been detected. In order to hear audio on your HDMI based TV or display, you will need to have a seperate audio conecction from you computer sound outputs to your TV or audio equipment. However I'm not using the DVI at all I just want to use the HDMI into HDMI because that's the way it's supposed to work because HDMI is supposed to handle both and I shouldn't need to use another cord when I'm already using one that does both. And so then my sound no longer works but my computer shows on my TV.Whoopdee doo! why can't I have both. HDMI is supposed to support both and when computer/motherboard/OS manufacturers put these technologies on computers you'd think they should commit to applying them flawlessly the way they were intended to be used.I understand this may be a driver issue and I've tried many combinations of the newest & the just HDMI Realtek Driver as well as the Gigabyte mother board drivers and the appropriate ATI/Catalyst driver/downloads.

I have a nvidia gt 9600 video card, and want to dual monitor to my large screen tv to use media center to watch movies, go online, etc. The card has 2 dvi outs, one goes to my primary monitor, the other I have a dvi>hdmi cable>tv set up.
I know I do not get sound out of this video card, but can someone show me the proper card that I can get both audio and video out with using my hdmi cable to do this? The geeks at Best Buy seemed baffled when I asked them about a video card, and using just the hdmi cable to do what I wanted.....I do not want to run multiple cables, etc...
