Dec 4, 2011I am using win7 professional 64-bit os. It takes about 8-seconds to come for logon screen. Whether below mentioned procedure is suitable for the solution of slow startup:
1. Click on the Start orb, enter "regedit", and press the "Return" key.
2. Go to the following "folder" (also known as "keys" in Windows registry slang): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesSystem
3. If you see an entry called "DelayedDesktopSwitchTimeout" on the right-hand side of the folder, move on to the next step. Otherwise, you need to create the entry. To do that, right-click on a free space in the folder, and select "New/DWORD (32-bit) Value". Type in "DelayedDesktopSwitchTimeout", and press "Return".
4. Double-click on the entry. Now all you need to do is to enter the number 5, and click "OK".

Feb 5, 2013I've got Windows 7 64 bit Home user premium on a Compaq Presario Cq61 Laptop. Bootup is reasonable in terms of time and log on screen appears reasonably quickly. The welcome screen takes 1 minute before going to the desktop. After that it runs really slow for about 5 minutes. There is a lot of disc activity but I don't know what service, etc is causing it. I de fragged, run system file checker, used MS config to ensure only 6 startup items and turned off numerous services but still can find out what is running in the background for so long. After 5 mins the machine runs well. I do use Avast anti virus and it loads a definition file on startup. I disabled that setting to manual update only but it made no difference. I don't use any other anti virus.

It takes forever to bootup, startup and it sometime hangs when I open up a program or typing.For the bootup, it takes very long time on the window logo, after that the black screen, followed by the welcome page with the loading cursor. Each of this process take a long time. For startup, its not so long but its still quite lag. For the opening up of program and typing, everytime I open up my visual studio, it will take a long time to show up and even if it showed up, it will be "not responding".So I will have to open it a second time before I can start using itWhen I am typing my codes, it will randomly hang and show that the program is not responding. I am still able to move my cursor though.

Sep 11, 2011OK A few days ago my computer kept freezing and I rebooted it 7 times to finally get it working. I removed about 40Gb of crap (mainly files) that were still present on my machine. Last night it happened again and I did the same. Only this time when I log in to my account I can't do anything. There's no desktop. Just a curser. Nothing else.
The first time I just used CTRL+ALT+DEL and closed dwm.exe which I guess restarted itself because I could use the desktop freely again. The same incident happened again this morning however I cannot access the security screen via CTRL+ALT+DEL.
I am able to run everything in safe mode so it's not a core issue (I hope). I was able to activate the Hidden Admin however the same problem persists across both accounts.

Jul 18, 2011I am running Windows7 Ultimate 32bit for almost 1 year.But now for approx one month i am having a problem and the problem is that when I enter the password at login screen the welcome screen appears for at least 30 second and after desktop appeared, the icons appear after 5-6seconds.I have applied all the fixes from Microsoft and also searched the internet but none of them solved my problem.I also uninstalled unnecessary programs, disabled startup programs, turned off Aero but none of them work too.

Apr 20, 2012I have Win 7 Enterprise x64 installed for few months, and it started to clog up. When I start it up, after wallpaper shows up, hard drive starts to grind like I'm defragmenting it, and it keeps doing it for half a minute.If I try to start up firefox during those initial seconds, it works slow, and so do other programs. I have 15+ GB free on my main C drive. I thought about clean install but the pain of reinstalling the programs and settings makes me cringe so I would like to try to clean the computer up.What programs do you recommend for the job? I can check for viruses and malware with Security Essentials, are there other programs that could possibly check if I have too much startup programs, and somehow optimize Windows back?

Aug 28, 2011My windows7 ultimate 32 bit takes to longer to display desktop with all icons and wallpapers.Now here is the problem details: When i enter password at logon screen, welcome screen appears for 7-10 seconds but after that a black screen with cursor appears, then appears the taskbar(on the bottom of same black screen), then appears wallpaper, then all desktop icons, then gadgets and then any other programs(background ones).This all process takes about 3-4 minutes(so annoying).I remeber my pc used to boot in less than 1 min.When i looked into event viewer, i found a lots of errors and warnings.Tell me if you need any kind of logs, I will provide them.I also tried disabling all startup items and unnecessary services but no gain.Also tried safemode but still no improvement. And one more thing, please don't advice me too defrage my harddrive, running antivirus scan, check disc bla bla bla.I already tried all of them.I am alos attaching a screen shot of my event viewer.

Aug 17, 2012I recently just battled the virus Win32:Small-NNE [trj] from the Anti-Phishing Domain Adviser program that was installed, without my knowledge. Now that it is removed and I am declared virus free by Avast, Malwarebyes and Spybot Search and Destroy I started my computer up in normal mode. However, after logging in it is just black with a white cursor. I have two monitors, but in case it matters there is only one cursor and it can move to either screen. I cannot access crtl + alt + del for the task manager and it just sits and sits. I didn't have the patience to wait more than ten minutes because I know its not supposed to do that. Prior to the virus issue it booted in less than thrity seconds all the way to my desktop. Oh, and the time from log-in to supposed desktop screen is longer than usual but still not more than a minute or two. is this repairable or did the virus do permanent damage to my pc? If it is, please please instruct me on how to fix it, since it does still run in safe mode.

I have it pluged in to a usb powered bus. The laptop has only 2 usb plugs and one is in use by the usb bus and the other by another device which will only work when not plugged in to a bus.
