I installed Google Chrome, AOE 3 and a number of other programs on the Administrators account. After reading that its not secure and is a best practice to create a second account for daily use I did that. I created the 2nd account with Administrative Rights, then reduced permissions to the first. However, I see that very few programs are available on the desktop of the newly created desktopI want to share Chrome, AOE3 etc. for all users.
How can I stop different users from sharing icons? E.g. my friend downloads and uses "Weather Bug" I don't want it but it shows up on my desktop because he has it on his.
On the laptop, i now want to share a folder with the desktop, but only for the desktop, not for the whole homegroup, nor the whole network.They are both in the same homegroup, as well as some other computers.
As the accounts are the same I added the user 'alex' in the advanced sharing-options with full control. But it ditn't work, so I googled and also added full control for the user alex in the security options. But if I want to acces the folder from the desktop, I still get "no permissions". I, resp the user alex have/has admin-rights on both machines.Did I miss something?
I noticed that in the advanced settings of both sharing and security I can always just choose the local machine as a "location"... got this something to do with my problem?

I want to run a main server where all the files are on that computer and have it share all the files to everyone else on the network. I'm not too familiar with Windows workgroup networking and file sharing.I want to have certain files accessible to certain computers and certain files accessible to everyone on the network. I'm under the impression that I have to have the main server with all the business documents (word, excel, pdf, pictures, etc). Then create separate accounts on the server and hand them out to each individual computer. After, go to each document and specify who can access what with read/write. Can I share some files to everyone and have certain files limited to other computers at the same time? How would someone access the shared files when you need a login and will this login conflict with files shared to everyone and files shared to certain people. I remember on my small business network I need a login for certain computers because it is shared to only certain people then how would I access the files shared to everyone when I have to login to see the server files to begin with? Also, how do I manage backups with this setup?

My question is, where would I go to seperate programs from user to user? like if I wanted to install a program on one user, and then have it so i can install the same program again on a different user. Can I do all that one one computer? I thought I had an idea of what to do about it, but i was off.
How can I allow non-admin users to download and install programs without being prompted for an admin password? I'm always having problems when they're trying to download even a safe program but they get a message prompting them for the admin password otherwise they'll have limited functionality of the program

I just installed a new 64 gig SSD in my computer. I also have a 2T secondary hard drive.The SSD is not big enough to contain all the stuff that will eventually be in "My documents",i.e. under "users" so I need to move the users directory to my secondary hard drive but havewindows behave as it were in its original location.I did some research and found the following technique which seemed plausible (and several people said it worked for them)
1. Install windows normally. 2. After install, boot from installation disk. 3. Get into the command prompt by clicking "repair". 4. Use robocopy to copy c:users to d:users. The command line should be: robocopy c:users d:users /mir /xj /copyall 5. Verify all files copied successfully. 6. Delete c:users. Command line should be: rmdir /s /q c:users 7. Delete c:documents and settings. Command line should be: rmdir "c:documents and settings" 8. Create junction to new users directory. Command line should be: mklink /j c:users d:users 9. Create junction for the old "documents and settings". Command line should be: mkdir /j "c:documents and settings" d:users 10. Restart computer.
Note:When in recovery mode the disk drives end up with different drive letters than what the normally have.Consequently my SSD drive which is "C" became "E" and my hard drive which is "D" became "C". Confusing, but I adjusted the above commands to reflect this.All seemed to go well until I rebooted. The computer booted up fine, but when I entered my password to log in windows complained that it could not find my profile. Since I could not log in at all I was forced to re-install windows. Supposedly, this is doable and I NEED to do it asap as my SSD will not hold all the stuff that will eventually be in "users".
I am cleaning a laptop out and i created a brand new user name. I deleted the other 2 users using the control passwords2.
So the machine starts and i select the user. Process usage is very high and it says 50, but actual user shows about 9. I click show processes from all users and i find the culprit as well as 50 processes. I deleted the users so there shouldnt be that option.
Why is there more processes if this is the only user, why does it even have the option?
I will if I have to manually delete them, although I'm not sure what other files may still be around on my drive that are located in Users/All Users that are redundant any recommended programs that I could depend on for this task ?

So over the past few days it seems that I have lost control of my C drive and all of its contents.I can no longer properly access it, and everything opens in "Read-Only". I can no longer install programs or modify existing programs.According to the security permissions, I have none. Nor can I change my permissions because in order to change them I need access to the C drive, which I don't have.I have tried creating other users and putting them in the admin group, etc. but nothing is working.
Today I decided to install some stuff on my computer as it was out of date..I installed Java, Flash player and adobe reader X but when I go to add/remove they are not showing up in that section?
Every time I start up normally into Win7 everything is fine for a couple of minutes. I'll open a few programs, then after a few minutes of them running they'll hang and enter the 'not responding' mode. (firefox, steam, IE). If I don't already have task manager running the system will basically be unresponsive and the only thing I can do is reboot manually. If I have task manager running I can sometimes end a process or two but some will remain open & unresponsive. Any programs that are working (including task manager) disappear when I minimize them and no programs appear on the task bar, (though they can be retrieved with alt+tab).
McAfee also has 'real time scanning' permanently disabled.
This is all very strange as there was nothing wrong four days ago when I was away, and the symptoms occured within 2-3 minutes of booting up this evening. The system runs in safe mode.
We have 5 accounts on our computer, and some of the kids don't log off, they just switch users.. I want to log them off from either the admin account or the user choice login screen..

I have 2 users defined to my W7 computer, lets say Jack (administrator) and Jill (normal user). Both users have had their "My Documents" moved to a second disk drive E: as "Jack's Documents" and "Jill's Documents".
Recently (I first noticed it on 26th August) both users started to see two "My Documents" folders on the E: drive in Windows Explorer. One contains Jack's files and folders, the other Jill's files and folders. I'm sure (but have no proof) that Jack used to see "My Documents" and "Jill's Documents", and Jill used to see "My Documents" and "Jack's Documents".
I've searched for information about this problem but can only find examples for duplicate "My Documents" folders for a single user.
There's something very basic about "sharing" that I'm misunderstanding. Does the term "sharing" mean sharing with other computers on the network?
If so, then how do you share folders with another user on the same computer? Here's an example: Each of my sons has a Standard user account on the same computer. So 'A' can't access 'B's files, and 'B' can't access 'A's files. They want to be able to share certain folders, like pictures and music.
They could simply copy folders they want to share to the Public user folder, but that's not a practical solution. How do users on the same computer share files and folders? Is it possible to put restrictions on sharing ('B' can view some of 'A's photos, but he can't edit them, etc.)? There's got to be an easier way than fiddling with access permissions, which often ends up with unintended consequences.
I use my desktop as a recording studio PC some of the time, and those DAW programs need a LOT of resources. That's why most of them recommend you install them on a seperate partition, and stop most of Windows' services.I don't want to install it on a different partition, What I'm trying to do is install it on a different user, but then just have that specific user NOT run a few services and startup programs.I could find a way to disable startup programs for a specific user, but I couldn't find a way to disable SERVICES for only one specific user. I have Windows Live Mail" on mine and I don't seem to be able to get Windows Live Mail on her account. What's the deal here? If I can't put Windows live Mail on both accounts, is there another mail program that I can put on hers?
