Shared Folders Over The Network

Feb 1, 2009

Windows 7 is running flawlessly except I have this one problem. When I go to install ANY anti-virus software it kills my ability to access the shared files and folders from my Windows 7 machine. I uninstall the AV and all is back to normal.

Is there something I am missing or doing wrong?

Can't Get To Shared Folders Without Going Through Network

May 10, 2011

I have no problem networking the two operating systems and sharing folders and printers (use work not home on Windows 7). BUT, the minute I open network and/or network sharing on the windows 7 computer I lose my internetconnection on both computers and have to go through a shut down of the Windows 7 computer and unplug the cable modem and the router and restart everything. You can't get to shared folders without going through network. If you do you have to restart everything to get back internet connection.

Can Windows 7 See XP Shared Folders On Network ?

Dec 1, 2009

I have a new HP8710W laptop that originally had Windows XP Professional installed from the factory. I just received my Windows 7 Professional 32 bit upgrade kit and have installed it on my computer

I also have a Desktop PC that is running Windows XP Professional.

Prior to installing Windows 7 on my laptop I was able to see the shared folders on HP8710W laptop while running the Windows XP Professional operating system. I would like to be able to access the shared files on my Desktop computer that is running Windows XP Professional with the HP8710W laptop that is running Windows 7 Professional 32 bit. I am a novice when it comes to networks and would appreciate any suggestions on what to do to get this to work.

I anticipate installing Windows 7 on my desktop in the near future but have not done the conversion as of this date.

I would appreciate some step by step instructions if they are available and not too much trouble to pass on to me.

I am running a TRENDNET TEW-432BRP wireless router H/W:vDl.OR

Browsing Win7 Shared Folders In Home Network - How ?

Dec 5, 2009

I have installed Windows 7 on a new PC and been playing around with it for a couple of days.

I have added it to my home workgroup and shared out some folders. I have turned off Windows firewall, however if I try to view the shared folders from other machines (XP) on the home network I get asked for a login and password.

Yet if I browse the other XP machines from the Windows 7 machine I can see all their folders. I can't find a setting anywhere that would seem to address this!

Restricting Access To Shared Network Folders For Specific Windows 7 Pc's?

Dec 4, 2011

i have multiple family members in the household, along with two Windows 7 desktops and three Windows 7 laptops. All pc's are on the same workgroup with file and folder sharing working faultlessly - we do not use Homegroups.I have a large amount of important data on my desktop that serves as a data backup for all work I do on my laptop. On top of this it contains a large amount of media files that get shared to all pc's too. All communication is done over the network. However, as the other family members are far less tech savvy, shall we say, than I, I am growing concerned with how easy it would be for someone else to access my laptop backup work, as it is all business related, and do something disastrous to it.I would like to have it so that my laptop is the only machine allowed to access this backup data from my desktop. The rest of the shared folders on this desktop would have to remain accessible to 'everyone'.

XBox Connected To Home Network - Shared Folders And Files Locked

Nov 21, 2011

I decided to connect the xbox to my home network, but when I did so all of the shared files and folders got locked. Being locked I cannot watch the videos or play the music with manually unlocking them first. So is there a way to revert them back to their unlocked state? There has to be an easier way than manually doing it... because I have around 50GB of music... that would take an eternity. Here's a screenshot for reference: [URL].

However, the odd thing, to me anyway, is if I use Explorer and type the Desktop address I can access the folders.

HomeGroup Folders Shared But Will Not Expand On Other Computer

When attempting to access the shared folders (with read/write permissions), I get the spinning wheel and then it just eventually says 1 item selected at the bottom of the explorer window and stops. The folders do not expand. They're on the same workgroup with no other computers, I read that they should be or something.

Can't Access Windows 7 Shared Folders From Media Box

Oct 20, 2011

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit and it's on a network with a Techgear MB902 PVR. I used to be able to watch movies in my Windows 7 shared folders on my TV via the MB902 but after I bought a new PC and installed Windows 7 I've had problems accessing the Windows 7 shared folders.

When I connect to my PC it asks for a login and password, and none of my pc or network passwords work. Strangely enough, when I restart Windows 7 the problem goes away and I can login successfully without a password, but then later the same day or the next day the login/password problem has returned.

I've trawled the internet looking for solutions, and tried all of the plausible looking ones, editing the registry, unsharing and then resharing. They all seem to work but then I realise that it's the reboot that works and not the fixes because the problem returns.

The MB902 has a hard drive and I can access the files on that from my PC with no issues it's just going the other way that I have problems.

Cannot Access Shared Folders Or HomeGroup Shares On This Computer?

Windows 7 Explorer Hangs While Accessing Shared Homegroup Folders?

Jan 28, 2013

I have three computers all running Windows 7 Ultimate x64, one of which functions partly as a media center (hosting music etc), the second and third being my office workstation and laptop respectively. The media center has a hard line to my cable modem (via Trendnet wireless-N router) while the latter two connect via wireless; the workstation via a wireless ethernet hub and the laptop via it's integrated wireless.I currently have all of my media folders shared via homegroup on the media center.
My laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad W500) can access all of the shared folders. My office workstation, while I can "see" the shared libraries/folders on my media center, hangs (the explorer window appears to be perpetually loading) whenever I attempt to open any of the folders. Sometimes when this happens I can kill/restart explorer but ever so often explorer itself will be unable to restart and I will have to reboot the entire machine.I have Windows Security Essentials running on both machines - all three are almost identical with respects to the installed software.I have tried reconfiguring the homegroup multiple times, flushing the dns cache, resetting and cycling the router, and have even swapped out wireless adapters (on the problematic workstation) to no avail.

Pinning Network Shared Folder Shortcuts From LAN?

Feb 20, 2011

Windows 7 adding network drive shortcuts to taskar. I'm searching a similar way with XP Quick launch bar to add some network folders (which aren't mapped as drives) to taskbar.hen dragging to taskbar, there opens a window (Pinned/Recent/) which I understand means shortcut has now pinned. Now there are listed already several network shortcuts, but still these are not visible on taskbar. Where do these go and how to make these visible? It looks like it's a separate toolbar, where I can open already previously dragged shortcuts, but how to open it without dragging a new network shortcut to taskbar? When dragging an application to tasbar, there isn't such a window and application shortcut is added without any question asked. It seems like Windows 7 doesn't support dragging and creating network shares shortcuts directly onto taskabar or did I missed something essential?

Mapping Network Shared External Drive?

We have a company drive that we map folders from to certain computers. They reconnected at log in like normal. However, we have a separate external drive that when I map a folder from it, it never reconnects on log in. I have set the folder permissions for the user I want. I have tried directly connecting with the folder share name and also using the IP address of the server. They will initially connect when you set it up at first, but then it never reconnects to the drive/folder when logging back on. I have tried almost everything I can find and it still never seems to connect.

Wake A Computer On The Network To Use A Shared Printer?

Jun 19, 2012

I currently have a printer connected to a computer in my room (Canon Pixma iP4300 [USB]). I also have a computer in the office which is connected to the network via a wireless extender. I am a little short of space in my room and am looking at which peripherals I can move away without too much hassle - the printer is one such thing which has a relatively large footprint and would ideally be located in the office.I am fairly confident that with a little research I could set up the printer to be shared from the office PC (Vista Home Premium x32) to other computers on the network, which would be a more suitable location for it.However, one thing that occurs to me is that it would require the office PC to be on in oder for other machines to print. Currently the office PC is set to go to sleep after a period of inactivity [20~30 minutes]. My question is, would it be possible for other computers on the network to wake this machine in order to use the printer connected to it?

When I check the server I noticed that the Z drive has been marked as un shared. So I re enable sharing and set the desired permission. Then I re map the drive on the workstation. A few days later and the same issue happens. Both computers are always left on and I've set the power options accordingly.

Difficulty Accessing A Network Shared Printer [Win 2000]

Jun 27, 2009

I am having difficulties accessing the network share to my Windows 2000 printer [printer attatched via USB to Win2000 computer, shared among all computers]. Both computers are behind a router, and are on the same workgroup.

My Vista machine did not have any problems accessing this printer or authenticating to Windows 2000, but Windows 7 seems to. The problem is when I go to connect to the PC, I am prompted for a username and password, but upon entering a valid one, it does not connect and comes back as invalid.

I attempted to navigate to the share manually through the "add pritner" device, but this did not work either. [Giving //computername/printer]

Using Windows7 RC1, build 7100 and Windows 2000 SP4. No difficulty sharing or authenticating on the LAN with any other OS.
