View 0 Replies View RelatedI downloaded Adobe Shockwave Player which is needed to view a file (.swf), and it appears in the control panel as an installed program. However, it does not appear as a default program when I am trying to use the "associate a file type or protocal with a specific program" even when I press the browse list. The program also does not appear when I "right click" the file itself and use the open command. The program also does not appear in the list of programs on the "All Progams: list when clicking the windows icon. So, can someone tell me how to get programs onto the default list....(Please, I have seen a number of threads that talk about how to "set" the default program which I am well aware of...I need to know how to get a program to be recognized and incoroporated as part of the list).

View 1 Replies View RelatedI did a clean install of windows 7 pro using sysprep to move my user files and program data to other drives. This works well as I only have a 120gb SSD running Windows 7 and a partition for Win 8 Pro that I haven't installed yet.
I changed the default installation path from c: to s: in both the 32/64 bit registry and now some of the programs (photoviewer, media player, defender) won't run. I've fixed the programs that I could, pointing those back to c: as I did not move any of the programs that comes with windows.
inteli7 - 16gig ram - Ocz 60 OS boot drive - 600gig sata 3 Velociraptor. I want my apps on the spindle drive - But Noooo windows does not want me to do that. Changes to registry are not supported, links and junctions and other suggestions seem more hassle that its worth. Should I just screw it and install 64bit XP? If I decide to give in what i can partition the 600gig and use that- 120 gig ok for the OS?

The .eml extension does show in the Indexing list, but not in the Default Programs list. I'm not asking this not because I dont know how to set a file association with VLC but just out of curiosity. It should be there right? It was there in my Vista very much. Im on 7 RTM now.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed Xemacs for windows and I'm having a problem associating it as the default program for .txt files. I know the standard process, but that standard process doesn't work. I have "Windows 7 Home Premium installed on a 32 bit system. I go thru the standard process via Default Progams/Associate a file type/ process and then browse to the Xemacs application. When I select it, nothing happens. When I check the association, it's shown as "Unknown application". Note: I have a 64bit system that handles the assocation just fine.
Also, on the original system, the choices for default programs is very limited. It seems that programs I have installed some how are not being populated in the eligible "default programs" list?
Any ideas? Is there a brute force way to add programs to the Windows 7 default programs list?

View 1 Replies View Relatedhow to deny internet access to all my programs by default? I mean that internet access is completely blocked to my existing programs, files, etc. and to all future programs that I might install or files that may be created.

I am a big fan of user account controls in Vista and Windows 7.
I would like to know how I can stop any and all newly installed programs from being able to change or affect my default programs.
I build and maintain computers and once I have installed and set up a new system I don't want any program to change my default programs. Not even win media player or Internet explorer if they update themselves.
Does that make sense.
I use GOM as the default media player and firefox as the default browser. But sometimes if there is a system update for media player, internet explorer or even iTunes and quicktime these programs sometimes after the update change my default programs.
Once I have finalized my install and set up my preferences how can I lock down the default programs permanently?
Is there any way I can change the default install path for programs away from my system drive? It's getting kind of annoying having to change it manually every single time I install something.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Windows, Adobe CS6 and a few other things installed on my SSD, which is C. But it only has 120GB so I can't install all my software on it so I want the rest of my software to be installed on my 2TB drive, which is F. I followed various tutorials on how to edit the registry. I am running Windows 7 Home (64-bit) so I edited the 64-bit version of regedit. That didn't work. It was still installing programs into my C drive. So I edited both regular regedit and 64-bit regedit and now certain programs don't work, such as Windows Media Player. Is there a way to do this correctly? I was thinking of switching drive letters in BIOS, but one, I don't know how to do that, two, it would probably create a bigger mess. I know Windows 7 "wants" to be on the C drive.[CODE]
View 10 Replies View RelatedI was trying to download a trial of adobe photo shop to do my homework and i am on my moms laptop. i went to open the program and a dialog box popped up asking what program i wanted to use to open this file, (i didnt notice the checked box at the time stating it was going to use this option for all files associated with this extension!) and the only available program that was listed was WINDOWS MEDIA CENTER and i needed to use the program so i clicked on it.... wish i wouldnt have. it changed ALL my .exe programs ie; google, firefox, system restore and now anytime i try to run anything the media center comes up!!
I have seen on the web that several other people have done the same exact thing. I was freaking out cause this is not my computer and so i went to accounts and made a new admin desktop, which is what i am on now. i have found involves doing something on the actual desktop that is messed up. but i cannot open any executable files on that desktop ie;command prompt,so i cannot do anything on there.
i know there has to be some way to reverse what i did, i just need someone to walk me through the process so i dont screw the computer up any more than i already have, i am able to open system restore in the new desktop, i but dont think that will have any affect on the change i made let alone have an effect on the other desktop from this desktop. I also went to the place on the desktop to change the default for programs and .exe is not listed.
There are endless queries on the Internet about how to set the default email client to something other than Outlook or Windows Live. Got me to thinking there must be some app or instruction on how to manually place an entry in the Windows 7 Set Default Programs utility, since software developers can do it for apps like Skype, WinRar, PotPlayer, etc. If anybody has run across such a tool, let the community here know

View 0 Replies View RelatedOk, I'm using COWON jetAudio as my media player in Windows 7 (I've been using this all in one media player for years now, and I love it.) And I'm trying to associate all of the file types to jetAudio.
When I go into the jetAudio preferences, and check all file types, it doesn't work properly, I'm guessing it's due to the fact that Windows 7 is still Beta.

My issue is that i would like to be able to have media center audio play only through my tv and not through my pc main speaker system, tv is hooked through hdmi output on graphics card, speaker system through 5.1 output on motherboard. I have tried the audiorenderupdater extender but all that does is set default audio out for entire system, so when itunes is used or game is played on computer audio goes through tv. I would like all system noises, media player, and game audio to run through pc speakers and simultaneously all media center audio (recorded/live tv) to go through tv audio, so i can watch sports center while playing mass effect and have audio from sportscenter on tv audio from mass effect on pc speakers.
Also is there a way to separate media player's actions from media center's. For example if you are laying music in media player and then open media center and play a tv show, music playback stops, not a big deal just like media player better than itunes and would like to be able to watch tv in media center while playing music in media player rather than itunes
