Running An App As Admin - What Does It Do
Aug 17, 2011
If you run an app as admin, what is happening exactly? I searched around a bit, but all I could really find was how to run as admin. I did find this: Some applications wont run on Windows Vista because they were designed for earlier versions of Windows. Most of the time, the problem is caused by UAC. Well, I am asking b/c an app that was having some issues (myself and several others) seems to be ok when the .exe is set to 'run as admin'. I can go into details if need be, but basically, this app was designed for Vista/Windows 7 (or so the dev says), and UAC is off.

avast! free antivirus; Spyware Blaster free.
Also for non-real time protection but for a 2nd opinion, sometimes do a scan with MBAM or Super AntiSpyware. And after learning about it thru this site, currently doing a free online ESET scan, which the one other time I used it found junk that none of the other programs did.I saw an article stating that most problems involving keyloggers, trojans, scareware, etc., could be prevented by my running my computer as someone without Administrative privileges - that this would prevent most programs from being able to take control, even if I unknowingly clicked on a downloader for a trojan/keylogger.I am in the USA and interested in some non-USA sports, so use free streaming sites a lot which sometimes contain various types of malware.I try to be careful, but occasionally, as tonight, I have to do a System Restore when scareware gets a program into my computer.

I am having issues with running certain apps with admin privilege.I have installed Notepad++ which i use for my .js files. Now here's what's happening: When im editing a file which is located in the programfiles folder, it wouldn't allow me to save it. I can only save it if i close the app, give it admin privilege(right click->compatibility->check run as admin). This is fine with me. But if i do that, another issue pops up. I am then not able to open files in notepad++ via the context menu. neither can i drag drop the file onto notepad++.

I am trying to change the folder properties of a applications folder from read only. I am doing this per instructions from the apps provider to prevent crashes.
When I go to change the permissions it states I need admin privileges. The only account I have on the box is the admin however I did change the name to something besides admin. The account is definitely an admin account.

My problem is that even though I have only one user account defined on my machine and it is set to "Administrator" it is not being allowed to do admin types of things like deleting folders. I tried to create a user group but that's not an option on the Win7 Home Premium version that I use. How can it be that the sole account is not the admin even though it shows that it is in the account user setup?

I'm just installed windows 7 on my 2009 imac through bootcamp. However there are some problems. Ive noticed when i try to play something on windows media player it will tell me that my computer is running low on memory and to close some windows. Also games run poorly if at all. I suspect its a driver issue but have gone through all the auto updates etc.

As I shutdown/restart my laptop, I notice it switches to a secondary desktop that has been running programs.A good example would be trying to open my Task Manager, I can Ctrl-Alt-Del and it will allow me to open Task Manager - however when I click on Task Manager, it opens on the Desktop running in the background. I can't even access the Desktop in the background, it only shows up as I'm shutting down - closing programs that I tried opening awhile ago.

I am running into this issue of having complete access to one PC running windows 7 from another one that is also running windows 7. One of the PC's is a windows 7 pro 32 bit and the other is window 7 ultimate 64 bit. I have had them setup with public and dedicated folder sharing. But from time to time I find that a file I want to get off one or the other was not saved to a shared folder. I have been looking for a way to allow complete access from one PC to other one (going both directions). I use 2 PC all the times and it really depends on where I am in the house as to what one I am using as one is laptop and the other is a desktop. They are both on the same network. It is just one of the strange things that I have not been able to find a way to get complete file access without the use of software like Teamviewer or others like it.What I would like to do it just go to the network location in the windows explore to get the files I want from the other PC.

On this computer any user I give admin rights to can print just fine. I set the security so that the everyone user has rights to the printer but if they don't have admin their print job just gets stuck in the que. It is an HP deskjet 6127, previously it was getting an error message about "A program running on this computer is trying to display a message." when a non admin would try to print and the print job would get stuck. I disabled the Interactive Services Detection service and it got rid of that message but the print job gets stuck just the same. It doesn't get an error message, it just says printing and never goes anywhere.
I also tried giving everyone read/write access to the print driver folder

Can use the computer a s a guest but I can't use Restore Point, can't use Run as Administrator, SpyBot has found issues I can't deal with without Admin access and neither can I do a back up before a wipe and reload. I have tried net user * from cmd and also OphCrack-which did find my guest password, but also said Admin account was Disabled. This problem was discovered when I tried remoteing in from my laptop. I need to give a standard user (non-admin user) rights to run a program that requires admin rights, without giving the said user actual admin rights or disabling the uac. This particular program starts/stops services so I would probably also need this user to be able to do so.Basically I'm trying to install an AMP stack (apache, mysql, php) for a standard user, but he is unable to use it because the stack requires admin rights to start/stop the apache and mysql services. And I don't wanna give this user admin privileges just to be able to use this program. The program is installed on the C: root and I've already given this user directory read/write/execute to the programs directory. I can confirm that this works since the user can read or modify the files within this directory.I have tried the Task Scheduler run as admin trick but it runs the program under the admin's desktop and not the current user's desktop url...I also tried the MS Application Compatibility uac "bypass" trick which does let the user run the program but refuses to start the required services for the lack of admin rights url...

I am having difficulties installing things onto my computer. I purchased a new laptop about 2 months ago. For the past couple of weeks, whenever I try to install something I get errors stating access denied. Need permission. This all started when I tried to install the new iTunes 10.5. I am the administrator. I am the only account. I'm not sure why I get these error codes whenever I try to install things.
NOTE: Already tried making a second admin account and turning on the Administrator one.

After setting up the Christmas tree the other night our breaker was thrown. After starting Windows up I no longer have admin privileges. Worse yet, no user does. Also, from my log in screen only one user is shown (the previous admin account). If I type other users names and passwords I can access them.
Since I can't change anyone's privileges above my own, what do I do?

I know what this sounds like. Before you ban or block or post some smartass remark, hear me out. I'm trying to get around an adminstrator password on my work computer so I can install a couple of useful apps. Before I joined the company, most of the computers were fairly open. About a year ago, they hired an empolyee who took advantage of this an installed personal liscense software on her work computer for work-related use. Obviously this is illegal and the employee was warned. The employee persisted and eventually the company locked the computers down so that you could not install without administrator privileges. This applied to old and new employees. I started about 2 months ago and was given a locked computer. Shortly thereafter the employee who caused the lock down policy left for another position. During this time I began experiencing issues with my computer. This person explained why the computers were locked down when I expressed that it would waste less of his time if the computer wasn't locked. He then said, "Of course you know that there is a workaround right? You just need a windows boot disk. Then you don't need the password." This was the wink, wink, nudge, nudge way of saying as long as you don't do something stupid it's unofficially ok. My question is, is this true, can I use a boot disk and not have to get an admin password to install a program? I'm not looking to install pirated software or software that I own a personal liscense for, I'm looking to install useful tools such as CPU-Z or something similar and to make enhancements such as increasing the page file size. If it's true, how do I go about it? Are there other ways to achieve the same ends?

I share a Windows 7 home premium computer with my mother. She is the administrator, but for some reason, I can see all of her documents. I a simply a standard user. I was admin a while back, so could that have anything to do with it? I haven't messed with sharing options at all. Anyways, I need an answer pronto, because I have to prove it wasn't my fault. If I can't do that, then my mother will force me to give her my Christmas money to pay for someone to fix it.

Not sure if it was a virus, spyware, or hacker, but something wiped out all of the passwords in windows 7 professional. I am signed in with a standard user account with no password. I've attempted to use different software such as <software name removed>, and password pro to retrieve passwords, but neither of them can find the SAM or any accounts with passwords. This system is on a peer to peer network and is being used as the server. Is there anything I can do to get admin rights back and get logged in as the administrator?
