Resize Partition - BitLocker Encryption On C Drive

May 6, 2011

I have a new notebook and I have used windows bit-locker on the C drive. My notebook didn't come with a TPM chip so I used a work around to get it working by using a flash drive with the keys installed on it, so I just plug the stick in at the boot process for everything to load up successfully. However Ive installed VMware and its taken up a lot of space on drive C.

What I want to do now is allocate some of the free space on the D: drive to the C drive, if that makes sense? Just to clarify my D: drive has no bit-locker encryption on it, but my C: drive does. Want I want to know is can i just use a partition tool to give the C drive some more space or will this cause problems as its using the bit-locker software? Also if I can do this, whats the best partition tool to use.

Bitlocker Drive Encryption On A Raid 0 Partition, Crashes Windows 7?

Apr 28, 2012

I've got 2x1TB partition using raid 0 on C: drive which I recently shrunk a little to make a 10GB partition to put "secure" items into. When I try to enable bitlocker encryption on the partition, it gets part of the way through and then my computer dies horribly. It's not a BSOD, the screen is black and windows tells me it can't find its loader.I reboot a few times and everything is back to normal.Delete the partition, re-create it, format it and try again, same thing.

Bitlocker Drive Encryption Using USB

Oct 31, 2009

I have been having some issues when trying to turn Bitlocker on in C:

I have followed the instructions as per this forum to enable a Startup key in gpedit.msc as I don't have TPM which worked.

After following the instructions, Windows Bitlocker asked me to insert a USB to save the startup key to. This appeared to save and then moved onto the next step where I took down the recovery key etc. and finally restarted to make sure my system was compatible before encryption started.

Upon restart, Windows said that it couldnt find a key on the USB drive. After further investigation I found that windows did not save the key to the USB after all even checked as a hidden file. It will save the text file (recovery key) to usb but not the bek file for the startup key.

I have tried this several times but each time it wont save although the system doesn't say there has been a problem and moves on to the next stage.

The USB is a 2gb cruzer with the smart drive software removed and re-formatted to NTFS. I have also tried this on other USB drives with no luck and the USB drives work as Iam able to write other things to it?

Bitlocker With Usb Key For Encryption

Sep 26, 2010

I bought Windows XP Ultimate and setup my computer with Bitlocker, using a USB key for the encryption key. After setting everything up and confirming it all works, I thought I would make a copy of this USB key. When I look at the USB stick using Windows Explorer or via a Dir command through a DOS prompt, I don't see any files on the USB stick. Is this normal? Is there no way to make a copy of the stick, I would have thought I would have seen files on it.

Bitlocker Crashing During Initial Encryption

Sep 15, 2012

New drive 1gb external, running bitlocker for the first time. Left it overnight cos it was taking forever, (which is the norm)

Woke up this morning and it was stuck on something like 47.1% requesting the bitlocker password, put that in and it starts encrypting again.... But every few random mins it falls over with an error message:

An Error Occurred The System cannot find the file specified. And prompts me to put my bitlocker password back in, for which I do, and the encrpytion starts again.

Its like at 50% now, after it falling over 3 times in the last 30mins.. I'm not exactly what to do.. I cant sit here for the next 10hrs waiting for it to fall over every few mins asking for the password.

I'd be up for scrapping the whole encrpytion and starting all over again.. But not exactly sure on how to permantely un-crypt the drive and reformat it ? Perhaps running a scandisk before doing so... It was a brand new drive.

I can actually still access the data, because autoplay opens after every error allowing me to see and open the files.

Power Failure During External Disc Encryption With BitLocker

Sep 18, 2011

So I had the power go off while I was running bitlocker (to go?) on my external hdd. I was not able to pause it before this happened. I was also running BL on an internal drive. Both were interrupted. I was able to resume and finish the internal drive. I was not able to resume the external. The BL application just stop responding when I try to resume/unlock the disk. It also seems I can't restart the machine normally when BL is trying to unlock the drive.

I read somewhere on the ms support site that even with power failure, resuming is possible. This might have only applied to an internal drive. I do recall seeing the pause button for the external, with a note that I needed to pause to stop in case of data corruption or something like that. Is there a way to recover my external? Do I need to let the program "not respond" for the same time or maybe longer than the time it spent encrypting it? Could I remove the drive and make it an internal?

BitLocker Encryption Failure After Running Startup Repair Utility

Jan 26, 2011

I have an issue which I need resolved. My hard drive had about 5 different partitions, one for Win7 x86, Win7 x64, Misc, Encrypted Data and Virtual Machines. The Encrypted Data partition was secured with BitLocker - The OS-partitions was _not_ secured with BitLocker. Now what happened was that I had to run the startup repair utility on my Win7 x64 installation and this completely messed up things for me. I have lost the Encrypted Data and Virtual Machine-partition.

I do not care about the VMs, but the Data contains vital information which I have not backed up yet. On top of losing the two partitions, a new partition called HP_tools re-appeared. This partition was removed when I scratched the OEM-installation approx. a year ago. I urgently need to recover this Data-partition. I do have unallocated space (between other partitions) on my hard drive, but none at the exact size of my encrypted partition.

Can OS Partition Access A Dual Boot Partition If Encrypted With Bitlocker

Aug 29, 2012

I'm a long-time reader but new poster. I am currently running Windows 7. I want to install Windows XP onto another disc and have a dual-boot setup. I keep Windows 7 up to date and secure, but for the XP partition, I would rather not have antivirus running or even installed, in order to limit background processes. I will not be logging into any place or making any credit card purchases when booted into Windows XP. It will just be used for surfing, games, etc. Further, if and when XP becomes compromised or buggy, I will simply overwrite the partition with a backup image.

If I use Bitlocker to lock down the Windows 7 partition (with the encryption key on a thumb drive) and boot into Windows XP, am I correct in thinking the XP installation see or can't access the Windows 7 partition? If XP gets compromised, can a virus access or write to the Windows 7 partition?

Is there any other reason why this would not be secure? Can a virus write to the BIOS?

How To Resize Windows 7 Partition ?

Nov 25, 2009

Windows 7 has been released for one month, many computer users have upgraded from old Windows version or installed Windows 7. Yes, new features of Windows 7 are wonderful, but there is a common problem Windows 7 users should pay attention to – partition size.

If you have installed Windows 7, you may find that the system partition free space become lower and lower, as basic Windows 7 installation requirement is 16GB and you have to install many other application. How to solve this problem? Backup all files, delete all partition, recreate partitions, restore? No, what a time-consuming job. Why not resize Windows 7 partition without so much complex works?

If you get ready for Windows 7, you'd better resize the system partition to be large enough and it will solve many problems after you installed Windows 7.

Unable To Resize Windows 7 Partition

May 16, 2012

I'm using a Thinkpad T420s, dual booting Windows 7 and Fedora 16. However, prior to me installing F16, I used Disk management to shrink the Windows partition. Well...it turns out I shrunk it *way* too small and I'm barely able to use it. Under Disk Management, even if I create unallocated space, it still will not let me re-size my windows partition. I think this is because the partitions are in the wrong order...but I don't know what to do about it.

Disk management shows four partitions as follows from left to right:

| SYSTEM_DRV (1.46 GB, Primary) | Windows7_OS (67.47 GB, Primary, Boot) | (500 MB, Primary) | (76.63 GB, Primary) <--Fedora 16 |

No matter what I do, I cannot click "Extend Volume" on my Windows 7 partition. I would experiment and use certain bootable partition tools, but I'm afraid I'm going to mess with GRUB and I won't be able to boot either one of my OS's..

Windows Not Genuine After Partition Resize

Nov 10, 2011

I resized a partition (the boot partition) using gparted off a linux boot disk (should be the same as any other program, though) after removing a backup partition which was never used. I rebooted the computer, and it ran startup repair. After startup repair had finished, I rebooted again. This time it boots into windows and gets to the login screen. I can log in, but it comes up with "welcome", followed by "preparing your desktop". It then loads a temporary profile. From there, I tried to load the control panel to load system so I could input the product key, but it wouldn't load the control panel because of an error I can't remember - but it displayed something like this: "{random nums and letters}"how to make it boot from a permenant account?

PS. I have access to command prompt as admin, and regedit. Also, I have another windows partition which I might be able to boot from. I also have a linux bootable CD, if that helps (can move around files from there)

Samsung Series 9 Resize Recovery Partition?

They take 20 Gigs of the 120 Gig drive for a recovery partition.A very poor choice on so small a drive. Plus then they use 30 Gigs more for Windows and their included features / bloatware. So there is only 70 Gigs left for programs and storage. Not the user experience that I think Samsung wants me to have. Enough of the rant. How do I get rid of this or resize the 20 gig recovery partition? I don't mind 1-200 Megs for a recovery partition and I think that I want the recovery feature, but 20 Gigs is way too much. I don't mind having Windows on an external disk, but I don't want it taking up a lot of valuable storage on the computer

Can't Encrypt Additional Partition With BitLocker?

Sep 28, 2011

My setup: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on ThinkPad T510. 1HD, two partitions (C and D).I just reinstalled my system and encrypted C; however, there is absolutely no option to encrypt D. I've tried accessing the drive from admin account and still nothing. When I open BitLocker management, it only lists partition C and not D.Here is some additional information that might or might not matter: I tried to restore my Windows 7 from an Acronis image and it was unsuccessful. Tried it twice and during booting POST showed two different W7s installed, which was incorrect. When I finally installed Windows 7 from scratch, the extra W7s were still appearing before startup and I had to use EasyBCD to remove them. Now when I am trying to backup partition C, Acronis says that my System Reserved Partition (SRP) is on partition D. My hunch is that Acronis messed up my drive D when I was trying to restore my C partition. Then when I did a fresh Windows 7 install, the SRP incorrectly ended up in D and since SRP cannot be encrypted, that means that my entire drive D can't be encrypted either.

Can that really be the case? If so, what is the quickest solution? I am dreading about going through formatting my 750GB HD and installing Windows 7 and encrypting it yet again. I read somewhere that you can use software like Acronis Disk Manager to move the SRP to drive C, but I am not sure how this will work because when I open the native winodws Disk Management, I don't see SRP there. So I'm stuck and don't want to format my HD if what I think is the problem is in fact not the problem.
