How To Recover Deleted HFS/ Partitions In Windows 7

Apr 16, 2011

I believe my 2tb external USB 3.0 hard drive has been corrupted (just the filesystem) and after trying to create a backup of my 200gb Steam games collection, the computer crashed halfway through. The culprit is the dying drive my games were on (hence my attempt to move them to the external for backup). I rebooted to only find that my hard drive was corrupt. The partitions were fine except it read as RAW not HFS+ (running Windows 7 64-bit and Macdrive).I attempted to recover data using gparted live cd and testdisk. Unfortunately I'm now left with no partitions and a "bare" drive according to Windows. I have not written any data ontop of the drive other than attempting to recover the partition map. I assume my files are intact.I have 1.2tb worth of data stored on the drive and this is important because one of the files contains every single file from my iMac before i wiped it and sold it. This file is a direct file copy (.dmg compressed) of that computer. Planning to restore to a new mac once I buy one.

Included is all of my photography work, music, movies, and other various precious files that make up my digital life. most of it irreplaceable. Is it possible to restore the partition map from Windows or bootable disc?

2 Documents Folders, Deleted One, Both Gone, How To Recover Files

Nov 8, 2011

I noticed I had two copies of the My Documents folder, one in my user folder where I want it, and the other buried deep in my pictures folder (I think I accidentally dragged and dropped it there once when I was trying to change the order of icons in the navigation pane). I deleted the one in my pictures folder, and both folders disappeared! I closed the screen out, re-opened "my computer," and see both My Documents folders back, but empty.

1) How can I recover my files? My last backup was last week, and I've written quite a bit since then. I was actually about to back up again when I saw the annoying second folder and deleted it, not realizing they were linked. The folder was too large and bypassed the recycle bin.

2) How can I fix the two folders issue? I have the same problem with my music folder also, and have had problems with the folders under my username seeming to disappear, reappear, and move for no apparent reason. The computer has Windows 7 Professional.

Recover Windows 7 Recovery Partition?

Apr 14, 2011

I have my netbook dual-boot WinXP and Windows 7. (I used EasyBCD for the dual-boot setup.)In booting into Windows 7, I used to have the option of the "repair your computer", which brought one several useful tools, if there is problem booting.Of course, the exact same tools are on the Windows 7 setup DVD, which I have. However, with a netbook, I don't always have the USB DVD drive with me, or the DVD, and that recovery stuff boots up much faster from the HDD partition, than from the DVD. So I think it is good to have.(Not at all like the notebook manufacturers recovery partitions. I wouldn't want to use those at all, wiping out all my data.)Recently I upgraded to a larger HDD. I used Acronis to clone my old HDD (at that time in the notebook) to the new HDD (attached via USB enclosure). (It was an older Acronis version, long predating Windows 7. I don't know if I would have had better results with a new version.)Well, at first I could not boot at all, with the new HDD installed. I was able to fix that though. (I forget the details of it at the moment.)Also, my drive letters (I have four partitions-drives) were messed up, so somehow the Acronis cloning did not keep that information, and I had to fix that in both XP and 7, with Disk Management. For the most part though, my partitions were all intact in the new drive. Being a larger HDD, I increased the size of a couple, in the Acronis interface.I realize now though, that I do not have the recovery boot-up option any more. That can show up while booting into Windows 7 and pressing a key, but if one chooses it, it just tells one to put in the Windows 7 DVD. Therefore, that option of booting from the recovery partition seems to be gone.Looking in Disk Management from Win 7, I see an unallocated partition, I think about 8.98 GB, I think. Is that the Windows 7 recovery partition? Did Acronis copy it correctly, but somehow the boot sector on the new drive cannot access it?

Recover Vista From Partition Or Install Windows 7?

Mar 28, 2011

I'm fixing my friends laptop and for some reason windows has gone haywire. Its a sony laptop so I could use the recovery partition and recover vista. The other option would be to go the campus computer store and buy a copy of windows 7 for $20. My reason for consider buying windows 7 is that is may provide a boost in the battery and most importantly, I think the laptop will run alot smoother with windows 7.

So should I get my friend to buy windows 7 or should I just recover vista?

100 Mb Partition Deleted For Windows 7

Apr 20, 2012

I deleted the 100 mb partition for Windows 7 yesterday because you're not allowed more than 4 partitions at one time when installing linux. So i didn't think i needed it. I deleted it realizing soon after than i required it for booting. I have a laptop so i didnt receive a Windows installation disk to correct this quickly, i have recovery disks that will work, but i don't want to have to go through updating and downloading so much again. I was curious if there was anyway i could fix this without formatting my hard drive. Like if i could download that partition from somewhere or the windows installation disk.

Recover Lost Windows 7 Partition After Installing Ubuntu?

May 25, 2011

So the other day I decided that I wanted to try dual-booting Ubuntu 10.04 on my HP Pavilion dv7-4083cl Entertainment Notebook that already had Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit installed. I shrank the main (biggest) partition by 100Gigs and then installed Ubuntu 10.04 on that 100Gigs of unallocated space. All worked fine, except when I tried to boot Windows 7 from the grub menu, it would come up to the beginning Windows 7 animation and then it would crash. So, I downloaded a Windows 7 Recovery CD and tried a few of the tools there. I did not create a system recover image prior to my troubles, so I could not recover the easy way.

After that, I tried the Startup Repair tool, which did not work. I read somewhere to try that Startup Repair tool 2 or 3 times, which I did. The third time, it seemed to freeze; it was "working" for about 6 hours, at which point I decided that it was enough and shut down the PC. That was a mistake... From that point forward, I still could not boot into Windows, but also every time I tried to boot into Ubuntu, I had to perform a disk check, which always failed! After trying that a few times, I had had enough yet again and decided to just reinstall Ubuntu. The install seemed to work fine, but once I rebooted I could not boot into Ubuntu (or Windows 7). No matter what option I select from the grub menu (or if I push F11 to go into recovery partition), it gives me an error that says "Error: No such partition" and dumps me into a grub rescue prompt...

After releasing multiple bouts of turrets, I tried booting from my Ubuntu LiveUSB again (same one I installed Ubuntu with twice) and ran Gparted to look at my partitions. It only showed me the one 100Gig partition and said the remaining ~350Gigs were unallocated! So now I'm stuck with no bootable operating system (on my HD), and to top it off, HP just sent me their "official" recovery disks that are trying to reformat my HD and erase all my data...

I know there has to be a way to restore my partitions and replace the grub bootloader with the Windows 7 bootloader. At this point I don't care about Ubuntu at all. All of my data was on the Windows 7 partition (which I cannot access from Ubuntu to grab it).

I can provide any information that you need, but remember that I can only do so via either BIOS or by booting Ubuntu from the LiveUSB. I cannot access Windows 7. I also do not have a Windows 7 install disk as this was a refurbished HP laptop that I bought from Costco...

Deleted The Partition Containing The Windows 7 Product Key?

Dec 23, 2012

Ok so to start off I wanted a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium. I had everything ready and I formatted the hard drive, deleted all the partitions and started the fresh installation of Windows 7. Then I realized I didn't extract my Windows 7 product key. Now I bought this laptop from Ebay. It is a Dell XPS 15 (L502x). I tried putting in the product key that was on the little sticker on the bottom of my laptop but it said that the key was invalid. I contacted Dell and explained my situation to them and they registered me as the new laptop owner and sent me the recovery disks. Now my question is will the recovery disks work even though I don't have a product key anymore?

Deleted Windows 7 Partition Unavailable

I have a Lenovo 3000 G430 Laptop with Windows 7 Home Basic Edition installed. I wanted to re-partition my 250GB hard disk into 3 logical drives. I shutdown the system and change the order of boot preference to CDRom. I had a bootable CD with me along with FDISK utility on it. I boot my laptop using bootable CD and ran FDISK to delete the existing NTFS (Non-Dos) partition. After deleting all the partitions, When I tried to create a new partition, it displays me disk unallocated space of 8GB only. After this I had tried several partition utility but all of them display disk unallocated space of 8GB only.I have run into problem. Can anyone help me find and resolve the issue with Disk space reporting less unallocated space of 8GB? while the actual size of harddisk is 250GB.

Deleted System Partition Windows 7 Now It Won't Boot

Oct 9, 2011

I was trying to get a dual boot setup of Windows 7 and Ubuntu where I had 1 partition for Windows 7, another for Ubuntu, and a third neutral partition accessible from either OS where I would house all of my data. The problem is, my computer already had 3 partitions set up: Windows 7, the system boot partition, and one called PQService. Because I could not find a tutorial to delete pqservice, I decided to delete my system partition, even though this seemed a little more risky (apparently it was lol.) I used this tutorial: TeraByte Unlimited Knowledge Base to copy the boot files to the windows partition and delete it. I then booted into a Live CD of Ubuntu, and used Gparted to move my Windows 7 partition in order to get rid of the 100MB of unallocated hard drive space. I then attempted to restart my computer into Windows and i got an error saying that windows could not boot because of some recent hardware changes. Is there anyway I could get back into windows without reinstalling it? Do I need to figure out some way to restore my System partition? Is there someway I could get windows to boot without doing either of those?
